Waterfront Festival Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino today announced plans to host a Waterfront Festival in conjunction with the Town’s 32nd annual Bluefish Tournament on Sunday, September 10th, from 12 noon to 6 p.m. at Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park.

Island, features children’s activities, face painting, learning exhibits on solar energy, environmental protection and sea life, New York State’s largest fish shaped cake and live musical entertainment

New Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, new Councilman Lou Imbroto, and Mayor of Massapequa Park Jeff Pravato announced today that the Town of Oyster Bay will partner with Long Island’s largest hunger relief organization, Island Harvest, to collect food and supplies to support the ongoing relief efforts for the victims of Hurricane Harvey.

“Hurricane Harvey made landfall in Texas as a Category 4 hurricane the strongest storm to hit our country in 10 years,” Supervisor Saladino said.

“Tragically, thousands of people are now seeking food and temporary shelter, as Hurricane Harvey has continued to deliver unprecedented amounts of rain in the impacted area.

Young Women’s Support Group, Under 40 Tuesdays, 6-7:30 p.m.

Women under the age of 40 who are diagnosed with breast cancer have unique needs.

group will focus on hose concerns while allowing the members to share their feelings in a safe supportive environment.

Most of us reading this column have memories of Hurricane Sandy, and many people are still rebuilding from it all.

time when our country is so divided, we as a nation can pull together and act as one to help those in need.

As we watch the terrible devastation of Hurricane Harvey in Texas, we feel so much compassion for all who have been affected by this disaster - the pictures and stories have been unbelievable.

It reminds us all that we are all subject to events and circumstances in our lives that are unexpected, and out of our control. We should always be ready to help people in need.

As was true here with Sandy, it is amazing how people, organizations and companies have helped by volunteering their time, energy, resources and money. The outpouring of compassion has been, and continues to be, amazing.

Poets’ Corner Presented by South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers

The Student Activist Grant of the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island is available to Nassau County middle school and high school students who want to create a better world. The $500 grant funds a selected student’s project in areas of peace, humanitarian efforts, the environment, disaster relief, or disadvantaged groups. The project can be a fundraiser that connects to an existing organization (such as the Habitat for Humanity) or makes a direct change (such as a neighborhood clean-up or voter registration drive).

The grant will give the student seed money to conduct the project.

Previous Student Activist Grants have supported safe recycling of medicine containers for clinics in Malawi, building a greenhouse on a high school campus, spring baskets for children in homeless shelters,

educating high school students about underage drinking with stickers on pizza boxes, creating an outdoor play area at a homeless shelter, running a Bowl-a-thon for Habitat for Humanity, and creating and selling ornaments to raise money for a breast cancer program. Says 2015 grant recipient Matthew Berman of Roslyn High School who collected 3500 pill bottles that were sent to Africa, “I am so grateful for this opportunity that the grant presented me with to turn this plan on paper into a successful and functioning reality.”

The student must be a Nassau County resident, aged 12 to 18, and enrolled in middle school or high school. The application deadline is November 30th, 2017, with the project to be completed before April 30th, 2018. Motivation to be More Active Today’s students arguably have more on their plates than any generation that came before them. But even with their hectic schedules, kids still have free time, which many are not always using in the healthiest ways possible.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly one-third high school students play video games or computer games for

three or more hours on an average school day.

Sedentary lifestyles can increase kids’ risk for being overweight or obese, and many parents struggle in their efforts to encourage their school-aged children to get off the couch and embrace physical activities. The following are a handful of strategies concerned parents can employ as they attempt to motivate youngsters to be more physically active.

Choose the right activity.

Physical activity and organized sports are not one and the same. Kids can still be physically active even if they are not athletic or if they are simply not interested in sports. Find an activity kids can embrace, such as hiking, swimming or even riding bikes, and they will be more likely to get off the couch.

Limit screen time. Kids spend lots of time in front

of computer and television screens, which can be detrimental to their overall health. Parents can place restrictions on the amount of time kids are allowed to spend surfing the Internet, playing video games and watching television, encouraging youngsters to spend time enjoying the great outdoors or playing with friends rather than spending it staring at a screen .

Join in the fun. Parents

can set positive examples by being physically active and even exercising with their children. Rather than retiring to the couch after dinner, take nightly walks or bike rides as a family.

This is a great way to get kids off the couch, but also a great way to spend more time together as a family.

Involve kids in your own pursuits. Parents who are weekend warrior athletes can involve their kids in their own activities. Take

kids along on weekend jogs, kayaking trips and so on, all the while explaining the important role physical activity plays in living a healthy lifestyle.

New Swim Program The YMCA of Long Island is excited to announce the launch of a new swim lessons program for members at all Y locations beginning in September.

This is the first time in more than 20 years that the YMCA will update the methodology behind its program. Registration for the YMCA of Long Island’s new swim program began August 20th, and the

program will officially launch on September 10th and run through November 18th.

“The YMCA of the USA and the YMCA of Long Island are entirely dedicated to the safety of our community members, which is why we found it more important than ever to update our swim program to best prepare our members with the ability

to be safe around the water and swim confidently,” said Anne Brigis, President and CEO of the YMCA of Long Island. “The new program will move away from the traditional swim training mechanisms such as floatation devices and instead focus on selfrescue skills and improved swim techniques.”

The upgraded program includes three-categories:

“This new program is designed for participants to feel safe and confident around water. It works on preventative activities such as asking permission to go into the water to working on the self-rescue benchmark skills JumpPush-Turn-Grab and SwimFloat-Swim,” said Tracie Busch, Aquatic Director at the Patchogue Family YMCA. “As they progress with the swim basics of the program they will learn

and build to competitive swim strokes. This new approach gives a more fluid progression of skills that allows swimmers to feel a sense of achievement as they progress at their own pace. This results in more confident swimmers who stick with lessons and develop a love for swimming that can last a lifetime.”

Swim Starters introduces infants and toddlers, ages six months to three years, to the aquatic environment and focuses on developing swim readiness skills through fun and confidencebuilding experiences.

Parents also learn how to supervise children in the water, how to prevent accidents and how to plan for emergencies.

Swim Basics develops personal water safety and basic swimming skills

in students of all ages.

Swimmers develop a high level of comfort in the water by practicing safe water habits, engaging in underwater exploration, and learning how to swim to safety and exit if they fall into a body of water.

Swim Strokes introduces and refines stroke technique in older students (school age, teens and adults). Having mastered the fundamentals, students learn additional water safety skills and build stroke technique, developing skills that prevent chronic disease, increase social-emotional and cognitive well-being and foster a lifetime of physical activity.

New Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino conducted a ceremonial street renaming dedication on Saturday, August 26th in honor of fallen FDNY Hero Raymond J. Pfeifer, who died in the line of duty on May 28th of this year as a result of renal carcinoma, a cancer he developed after being exposed to toxins while working at the 9/11 site. The ceremony included a street sign unveiling at the corner of Ballad Lane and Blueberry Lane in Hicksville. Another sign will be permanently displayed at the intersection of Ballad Lane and Bishop Lane. The signs read “F.D.N.Y. Fireman Raymond J. Pfeifer Way,” and are situated near the home where Firefighter Pfeifer resided.

Firefighter Pfeifer grew up in Levittown and moved to Hicksville in 1989, where he lived with his wife, Caryn, his son, Terence and his daughter, Taylor.

He served as an FDNY firefighter with Engine 40/ Ladder 35 from 1987 to 2014. During his tenure with the FDNY, Firefighter Pfeifer earned the respect of his colleagues with his dedication, caring and

New York State Department of E n v i r o n m e n t a l Conservation (DEC) E n v i r o n m e n t a l Conservation Officer (ECO) Timothy Fay received the 2016 “Officer of the Year” award from the ShikarSafari Club International in a ceremony hosted by long-time Club member Robert Stackler, DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos announced today.

Shikar-Safari Club International was founded in 1952 by an international group of hunters interested in exchanging ideas about the sport. Each year the club sponsors an award for the Wildlife Conservation Police Officer of the Year in all 50 states, 10 Canadian provinces and the territories of both nations, acknowledging the important part ECOs play in local, national, and international wildlife conservation.

ECO Fay grew up in the Town of Champlain in Clinton County and after graduating high school joined the US Army serving 21 years, retiring from the New York Army National Guard. He attended Buffalo

State Collage graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree and Graduate work in Multidisciplinary Studies.

He attended and graduated from the 17th Basic Academy for Uniformed Officers, a twenty-six week residential police academy held in 2007. After graduation Tim was assigned to Region 1 and patrolled Suffolk County enforcing New York’s Environmental Conservation Law, including investigating hunting, fishing and trapping activity, releases of petroleum, asbestos and other hazardous substances, water pollution, wetland damage, timber theft, wild animals unlawfully kept as pets, and commercial and recreational marine fishing.

ECO Fay keeps the mission of the Division of Law Enforcement (DLE) close to his heart, and thoroughly enjoys all the aspects of the mission, from tickets and arrest, to education, and especially outreaches. He is involved in the Youth Conservation Program, Youth Waterfowl Day and other youth

oriented hunting and fishing outreaches.

ECO Fay maintains one of the most diverse enforcement programs in the Division. He is adept at all aspects of the Environmental Conservation Law. Additionally, he successfully networks with outside agencies and organizations, and he actively accepts outreach projects for the Division, helping to spread the word for protection of the environment and the State’s natural resources.

ECO Fay was recognized for numerous successful marine fish and wildlife investigations involving shellfish, crustacean and food fish. With his diverse workload, he was also responsible for multiple cases concerning the unlawful disposal of solid waste. This recognition also includes his work as a Field Training Officer, directing and guiding new officers in the field, locating, identifying, enforcing big game violations and bringing the charges to a successful resolution in court.

ECO Fay is trained and certified in many fields of work with the DEC Division of Law Enforcement. He is a Field training officer and a Firearms instructor, training new and current police officers inside the DEC as well as outside agencies. He is also as a member of the NYS DEC/ DLE Special Operations Group (SOG) completing the DEC Basic Tactical Operator’s Course in 2015 and the SWAT Operator Course in 2016.

For the past 11 years, ECO Fay’s professional work ethic and commitment to his profession resulted in him being nominated and receiving the ShikarSafari Club International Officer of the Year award.

Tim resides in Northport in Suffolk County with his wife Anne and four daughters, Emily, Lauren, Nora and Valerie.

Stuff-a-Bus Sort-a-thon The Long Island Nets and the United Way of Long Island recently held a Sort-a-Thon event at NYCB Live, home of the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in partnership with Target as part of the 2017 annual Stuff-A-Bus campaign.

The Sort-A-Thon featured more than 75 volunteers including Senator Elanie Phillips and Senator Kemp Hannon, along with members of their respective staffs,

Target employees, representatives of the Long Island Nets and members of Union 338.

Volunteers sorted thousands of school supplies to be donated to the Uniondale School District to benefit students in need for the upcoming 2017-2018 school year.

The school supplies included backpacks, binders, colored pencils, notebooks, glue sticks and other useful tools that have been collected from more

than 25 drop-off locations throughout Long Island.

Over the past eight years, United Way of Long Island’s Stuff-A-Bus program has provided hundreds of thousands of school supplies to Long Island students. 2017 is the first time that Stuff-ABus will be held in Nassau County.

Over 50 Fair In mid-September, the Over 50 Fair will once again offer Long Islanders an opportunity to meet with businesses and nonprofits who have terrific products and services geared towards adults age 50+ and their adult children.

The Over 50 Fair, in its eighth year, is the largest “over 50” expo on Long Island. The Over 50 Fair is the brainchild of East Hills resident Barbara Kaplan, who also coordinates events at area malls under the business name Specialty Connections.

Celebration was a great way to honor my parents, who put so much thought and care into starting this park, as well as the guests who have continually supported us through the decades,” says Melinda Novak, CoOwner/Vice President, Long Island Game Farm Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo. “With the power of social media, we’ve found that many families have fond memories of the park in the 1970s and 1980s, and are now bringing their children and grandchildren to our zoo.

The Long Island Game Farm features interactive animal experiences, where guests can get upclose and personal with their favorite animals. In addition to getting to feed the giraffe and camels, guests can hand-feed the animals in “Bambiland,” and bottle-feed goats and other baby animals in the nursery. As the park closes in on its 50th Anniversary, additional family appreciation and special events will be planned.

The Long Island Game Farm – Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo celebrated its first ever Founder’s Day – A Family Appreciation Day by offering guests $6 admission for adults and free admission for children on Saturday, August 26th.
