Acknowledgements I have been putting this off for quite some time. This “final step,” if you will, penning my last column for South Bay. I told myself I would take my time with this one, write it well in advance of deadline, try to encapsulate everything in one epic, closing chapter.

And yet, here I sit – 11:30 p.m. on the eve of my second to last day of work, staring at a mostly blank template as countless thoughts swirl in my brain.

While my last three columns have been vignettes of one sort or another – from birthday beginnings and numeric significance, to desktop mementos and the memories associated with them, to a flashback of my origins within the pages of the old Lindy hometown weekly – this one, well, this one leaves me at a bit of a loss for words.

My career, this portion of it, has been largely defined by my ability to transcribe a feeling on paper, to relate to readers from all walks of life by telling stories – of my life, of my surroundings and my observations of the people within them. Always, though, the idea was to find a common thread, a unifying theme.

Change. It is the one constant.

Equity First Foundation

Equity First Foundation is a 501c3 nonprofit organization located here on Long Island. Rhonda Klch started this foundation with the mission to offer services, resources and programs to consumers and small businesses that are facing financial distress. Although the details of financial markets may not be necessary for everyone, a good understanding of everyday finances is needed to ensure your home, bank account and additional assets are protected as you go about your life.

This nonprofit is guided by a board of experts from the Long Island business community. They strive to educate the community so people can make financial decisions with knowledge and confidence.

The mantra of this foundation is “Learn today to choose wisely tomorrow!”

This organization holds hands-on workshops, where participants will be given course material, handouts and goals to accomplish. Some people they help through these workshops are those in women’s shelters, homeless shelters, veteran homes, at-risk communities, drug rehabilitation centers, senior centers and more.

As a way to benefit and honor certain individuals, this nonprofit holds many events throughout the year. Some of these events include their Dancing for a Cure event, which raises awareness and research for individuals who have or have had cancer; their Holiday Dream Mission, which assists families in financial distress during the holiday season; their Military Saves Week, which is geared toward assisting military members financially; and their Angel Awards, which honors women of Long Island who have created an impact in the areas of community, volunteer, philanthropy and business development!

Equity First Foundation is available to provide educational presentations on an array of topics such as the importance of credit awareness, budgeting and mortgage modification. Businesses, civic groups, community centers and other groups can host seminars or workshops for their employees, members, the communityat-large, etc. If you are interested in scheduling a program, the opportunity is available! Looking to volunteer? Equity First Foundation is in need of volunteers to coordinate events and tradeshows, assist with office work, organize fundraisers and, lastly, to help with grant writing and research. The Gregory Foundation for Cancer Research will host a Biden Cancer Summit on September 21st, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Northwell Health’s corporate headquarters at 2000 Marcus Ave. in New Hyde Park.

This summit will address a patient’s cancer journey beyond the disease, including topics such as patient data, disparities in cancer and treatment, managing difficult conversations, preventing cancer, understanding oncology research, the development pipeline and how to promote innovation now and in the future. The summit will bring together all stakeholders in cancer, including clinicians, scientists, researchers, pharmaceutical industry, patients and care-givers.

The Gregory Foundation’s partnership with Northwell Health aims to accelerate progress and collaboration in cancer care, treatment, prevention, diagnosis and survivorship. The goal is to double the rate of progress in cancer by joining hands with Biden Cancer Initiative for this global effort. Northwell is the only site on Long Island hosting a Biden Cancer Summit. Through this summit, the Gregory Foundation and Northwell hope to deliver what patients deserve: a cancer research and care system that puts saving and extending lives above all else.

Long Island Educational Leaders Gather to Celebrate SCOPE Long Island’s public school educational leaders congregated at Oakdale’s Bourne Mansion on August 9th for SCOPE Education Service’s 34th annual Dinner Meeting for superintendents and school board members.

The event served as a networking opportunity for new and returning superintendents and board of education trustees and other education system professionals.

SCOPE provides a vast

array of school district services, such as before and after-school child care programs, school enrichment programs and professional development.

SCOPE Executive Director George L. Duffy told those in attendance that their work is vital and urged them to utilize and benefit from the many programs and services SCOPE provides.

He also introduced all newly installed school board members and

superintendents and wished them success in their new positions.

Henry Grishman, president of SCOPE’s board of directors, gave valuable advice to the organization’s new guests.

He said, “Leave your school district in far better shape than you found it.”

Speakers included Roger Tilles, who serves as Long Island’s representative on the New York State Board of Regents, and New York State Commissioner of

Education MaryEllen Elia.

Both provided updates on education policy changes, such as state assessments, graduation requirements and teacher evaluations.

Regent Tilles said he is examining ways to create opportunities for teacher advancement and noted that while many Long Island districts are receiving national accolades, other districts are struggling. “We have to remember that those kids are our kids,” Regent Tilles

said. “We cannot separate districts doing well from those that aren’t. The equity issue needs to be brought to the forefront.”

Commissioner Elia urged educators to be vocal about the issues surrounding the federal Every Student Succeeds Act, the new New York State standards and assessment issues. She said she is most proud of ESSA’s emphasis on civic responsibility and engagement.

“We need to teach

students to be critical thinkers that look at issues,” Commissioner Elia stated. “Students need to be aware of civic problems.” After receiving questions about the controversial opt-out movement, the Annual Professional Performance Review, charter schools and the move for privatization of public schools, Elia encouraged educators to remain steadfast on their focus of what is good and beneficial for students.

Folds of Honor In front of a standingroom-only crowd, John Pillar, PGA Director of Golf Operations at Woodloch Springs, announced the birth of a new destination partnership bringing closer together Woodloch Resort, an award-winning family resort in the Pocono Mountains, and Folds of Honor, a nonprofit organization which provides educational scholarships to families of military men and women who have fallen or been disabled while on active duty.

Woodloch’s 6th annual Folds of Honor Golf Classic culminated in a celebration of more than 200 attendees eager to rejoice in the fact that over $50,000 was raised for this year’s event, creating scholarships and changing the lives of 10 families.

“We want to serve as a reprieve, as temporary as it may be, for families who have given the ultimate

sacrifice by allowing them a little relaxation or just a distraction. Woodloch fosters an environment for families to reconnect and have a lot of fun doing so,” remarked Pillar. “This is why Woodloch and Folds of Honor are a perfect team.

The core purpose of both is to bring families closer together.”

As the destination partner for Folds of Honor, Woodloch Resort will host its inaugural military appreciation weekend, November 2nd through November 4th, 2018, which will cap off with a fundraiser cocktail party and dinner that Sunday evening. Blood Drive a Success Assemblyman Dave McDonough announced the success of his annual blood drive held Monday at the Merrick Library.

Thanks to his efforts, Long Island Blood Services was able to collect 41 pints of blood, exceeding their goal of 30 pints.

Lenny Kravitz Spreads Love Through Music

By Allison Kugel Twenty-nine years after releasing his debut album, Lenny Kravitz is still letting love rule. The multi-Grammy award winning musician brings forth a conscious body of work with his latest album, Raise Vibration, out September 7th.

Musically, Raise Vibration is an eclectic blend of the kind of stylistic rock n’ roll-funk sound that Kravitz is known for, with subtle nods to vintage R&B and choruses that sway towards pop appeal. His music puts you in a trance-like groove and defies all genre.

Allison Kugel: You’ve said you were born to make music. Can you share your earliest memory where you became aware that music was going to be your life?

Lenny Kravitz: For me the pivotal moment was going to see The Jackson 5, live at Madison Square Garden, when I was six years old. I was in the first grade. I had already been intently listening to their record. But I went to the show, and the next morning that was it! I was completely sold. I knew that’s what I wanted to do.

my favorite place to work; it’s my workshop. When I’m in the studio and I’ve got my equipment and all my instruments and everything is set up, that’s the magical place for me. It’s where I can flow. I jump around from instrument to instrument, and it’s wonderful.

It means having the desire to learn, to improve, and to face my faults and learn from them. I’m always looking to go higher. And taking as much ego out of myself as possible.

Allison Kugel: Do you record all of your instrumentals in addition to doing your vocals and producing?

Lenny Kravitz: I believe that God is my creator, our creator. Whether we realize it or not, I believe we are all created by the same God. I believe we are all one creation, we are all connected, and I believe that God is the ultimate source of love and all we are looking for.

Lenny Kravitz: Yes. I start on drums and then I go to a guitar, a bass, another guitar, keyboard, percussion… I keep layering as though I was painting, until my picture is complete.

Allison Kugel: Your upcoming album is called Raise Vibration and the first single, It’s Enough, is a call-to-action anthem about political corruption and social and racial injustice. Was writing It’s Enough a form of therapy for you, and a way of turning hopelessness into empowerment?

Lenny Kravitz: The music that was made by these kids was not elementary; it wasn’t bubble gum, as they used to say back then about young artists. This was sophisticated, high-level music with the best musicians, the best producers, and [Michael] was one of the best singers who ever lived and who ever will live.

It was a perfect storm for me, the way everything came together. On top of the music, the presentation and showmanship were top level and soulful, and these were people that I could identify with. They looked like me. I had the same hair… there were so many things that came together in my mind.

Allison Kugel: It’s interesting to hear you say that. My son is half Jewish and half Jamaican, and he does the same thing. He tends to gravitate towards people he sees on television, in film, and with music, who have his skin tone and his hair.

Lenny Kravitz: Yup! I have the same background, except I’m Jewish and Bahamian.

Lenny Kravitz: I react to the world.

I actually recorded the song twice.

I was trying to find the direction for the record. The way the song started, the first version of It’s Enough was a full-on guitar, bass, drum, punk rock song. It had an angry tone, because that felt like the proper reaction. And then I thought about it and ended up changing it and finding this groove, which is the polar opposite of how it started. I found that by being calm and centered, and by being quiet, it was more effective. It brought out a whole new feeling in the song, and I think it enables the listener to hear the lyrics even better.

Allison Kugel: When and where do you feel most creative and musical?

Allison Kugel: What does the title of your album, Raise Vibration, mean to you? And how do you raise your vibration? Do you meditate or pray?

Lenny Kravitz: It could be anywhere, but it’s [typically] in the studio.

My studio is in the Bahamas. It’s

Lenny Kravitz: It means exactly that; waking up. I meditate, I pray, I try to be still, I try to be quiet… and listen.

Allison Kugel: I always say that when I enter a room, I never walk alone because I can feel the presence of God beside me; as well as my great grandparents, my grandparents, my parents, siblings and my son. I walk into a space with the energy of those who made me who I am. When you enter a space, who walks beside you?

Lenny Kravitz: God is with me at all times which I am always aware of.

And the energy of my mother, of my grandmother, of my grandfather.

My daughter (actress, Zoe Kravitz), who is here with me on this earth, is always with me. Like you said, knowing that and knowing that spirit is far superior to anything here. The physical presence is wonderful, and something that we require and crave as human beings. We’re spiritual beings living a physical experience, but as you say, you recognize that you have these people with you and it just shows how strong spirit is and how strong energy is. My mother’s (the late actress, Roxie Roker) been gone for twenty plus years, and I can still feel her every day.

Allison Kugel: Your music transcends genre. It’s a blend of rock, punk, blues, soul, pop; it’s everything. You can’t categorize it. I remember seeing a television clip of you from Oprah’s Master Class, where you tell the story of sitting in class as a young boy and you didn’t know which box to check off on a piece of paper asking you to identify your race. Everyone’s life has a spiritual theme. In your case it seems to be an ongoing theme where people want to put you in a box and label you, and you railing against that.

Lenny Kravitz: People love a box (laughs)! They want to put you right in it, so they can easily define, for their own comfort, what you are. I’ve been fighting against that from day one in my life, and in my musical life. Going back to that time in school, I knew I was black, but I knew that wasn’t all I

was. I knew I was also Russian Jewish, and I knew that my great grandmother was full-blooded Cherokee Indian. My mother always taught me, “Yes, you’re black, but you’re just as much this and you’re just as much that. Don’t discount that.” If you’re mixed, like me and like your son, you don’t discount one of your parents. You’re just as much one as the other. But, what my mother did say to me when I was a child that I think was very smart, and I didn’t realize it until I got older, was, “Even though you’re mixed, society only wants to see you as black.” I didn’t understand that at age seven.

Allison Kugel: Did you feel diminished by it at the age of seven?

Lenny Kravitz: From what I recall, I remember thinking, “What does that mean?” Of course, as I grew and went through life, I understood what that meant. People aren’t going to see all the complexities and differences.

People are going to see what they see, and that is the color of your skin. That was a very good lesson once it kicked in. I was like, “Okay, people don’t see everything for what it is.”

Lenny Kravitz: When I’m finished with an album, I’m at that place where I let go and I’m excited that I’m finished. It’s always exciting getting a new project out. I hope the people who enjoy my music will get something beautiful from it and will relate to it. The main thing for me is that I expressed myself authentically to who I am, who I was at that moment in time, and that it represents me well. That to me is everything. That’s a success.

S u p e r v i s o r Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Michele Johnson invite residents to participate in the Fall Oyster Bay Harbor Cleanup, scheduled to take place between 8 a.m. and 12 p.m. on Saturday, September 15th. This environmental cleanup is co-sponsored by the Town of Oyster Bay, the North Oyster Bay Baymen’s Association (NOBBA) and Friends of the Bay. “This environmental cleanup initiative at Oyster Bay Harbor includes Town employees and volunteers rolling up their sleeves and working side by side

to ride our beaches and shoreline areas of debris,” said Supervisor Saladino.

“Join us on Saturday, September 15th and help make a difference!”

Volunteers are encouraged to meet at the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park launching ramps and waterfront gazebo located off of Larrabee Avenue in Oyster Bay. Additional meeting locations for the cleanup include Theodore Roosevelt Beach in Oyster Bay, Stehli Beach in Bayville and Centre Island Beach in Bayville.

Councilwoman Johnson stated, “Countless

amounts of paper, food, plastics and other trash are discarded on beaches or dumped overboard from recreational and commercial vessels.

Volunteers will help us cleanup local waterways, protect our marine life and beautify the shoreline by removing this litter and preserving our local suburban quality of life.”

Hicksville Welcomes New Teachers As part of an annual tradition, the Hicksville Public School District welcomed its newest educators for an orientation prior to the start of the 2018-2019 school year.

The newest faculty members met with recently appointed Superintendent of Schools, Marianne Litzman, and other members of the central office team. They also had the opportunity to develop

camaraderie with their new colleagues, become acclimated with the district and its practices, and discuss current and effective teaching strategies.

Youth Hockey Registration Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino today announced that registration for the Town’s 2018 Fall Youth Ice Hockey Program will take place on Sunday, September 9th (8 a.m. to 12 p.m.), Monday, September 10th (6 p.m. to 9 p.m.), Thursday, September 13th (6 p.m. to 9 p.m.), Sunday, September 16th (9 a.m. to 1 p.m.), Monday, September 17th (6 p.m. to 9 p.m.), and Thursday, September 20th (6 p.m. to 9p.m.) at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center, located at 1001 Stewart Avenue in Bethpage.

“The Town of Oyster Bay’s Youth Ice Hockey Program is one of the best games in town, and features many respected coaches dedicated to teaching this outstanding sport to the many boys and girls enrolled in the program,” said Supervisor

Saladino. “As a hockey enthusiast myself, I am proud to announce that the children who attend the program get the unique opportunity to hone their skating and hockey skills as part of a program that has earned recognition by the National Hockey League for its high level of quality.”

Individuals interested in registering for the 2018 Fall Youth Ice Hockey Program must bring a copy of their birth certificate, proof of Town of Oyster Bay residency (tax or utility bill) as well as payment. Check, money order, MasterCard or Visa will be accepted.

All registrants must bring these items, even if they have participated in the past. A parent or legal guardian must be present at registration.

The program is held on Sunday mornings, and Monday, Tuesday,
