This year’s hurricane season is expected to be a tough one, meaning our region will experience periods of severe weather this summer. Despite the potential occurrences of flooding and widespread power outages, the Plainview Water District (PWD) is prepared and well equipped to continue providing its residents with the highest quality water possible, regardless of the weather. Over the last decade, when our region has experienced significant storms—such as Irene, Sandy and Isaias—water never stopped flowing to Plainview-Old Bethpage residents.“ThePlainview Water District has taken both short-term and long-term planning and resiliency measures to ensure our supply and distribution system operations can handle any severe weather event,” said PWD Chairman Marc Laykind. “There is enough for our residents to worry about during these periods of severe weather, and we’re proud of the fact that continued access to highquality water will not be one of them. We have made the necessary investments in both infrastructure

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board invite residents to join them at the Town’s annual September 11th Memorial Ceremony scheduled for Thursday, September 8th at 7:00 p.m. at TOBAY Beach. “This year marks the 21st anniversary of the tragic events of September 11th, 2001, and to honor those we have lost we invite all residents to join us at our annual September 11th Memorial Ceremony. This remembrance ceremony features music, religious readings, a light tribute, and a reading of the names inscribed on the Town’s 9/11 wall,” said Supervisor Saladino. “We will also unveil new names inscribed on the Town’s ‘Walls of Honor,’ recognizing those who gave the ultimate sacrifice due to 9/11 related illness.” The Town’s 9/11 Memorial - featuring a steel beam recovered from the World Trade Center - is inscribed with the names of residents lost on September 11, 2001. The Walls of Honor monument expands each year with newly inscribed names of those who lost their battle with 9/11 illness caused by exposure at Ground Zero. For more information, visit the Town’s website at www.oysterbaytown. com or contact the Town’s Department of Community & Youth Services at (516) 7977925.

Town To Host 9/11

As a result of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) change to its Lead and Copper Rule, the Hicksville water District (HWD) has launched a new Lead and Copper Updates page on its website, which can be found at homesameneedwatersurpassesroutinelyHicksvillewatercomponents.maylinematerialresidentsnewofandinexistingmeantDecemberwhichThelead-and-copper-updates.hicksvillewater.org/news/www.changestotherule,wereannouncedon16,2021,aretoensurethatanyleadservicelinethecountryisremovedreplacedbytheend2025.TheHWD’swebsitepagehelpstoidentifytheoftheirserviceandwhetherornotitcontainleadorlead“WhileallofthedistributedbytheWaterDistrictistestedforleadandallestablishedqualitystandards,wetomakesurethattheistrueofallprivateservicelines,”said

HWD Chairman Nicholas Brigandi. “When residents self-certify their lead service lines, it enables us to take action and make the necessary replacements. We ask that any residents who may have lead service lines take advantage of this vital new resource as soon as Onepossible.”of the most important aspects of the new page is the Service Line Self-Certification Results survey. Based on decades of working in the community and the inventory of data acquired on installed service lines, the HWD is confident that, if there are any lead service lines remaining within the District, they are few and far between. However, 100 percent confidence is needed, so it is crucial that residents who may have lead service lines participate in this data collection effort through the online survey. This will provide the District with an accurate record of all lead service lines in the area and thus help ensure each individual home’s water quality. The HWD’s new website page aims to make the self-certification process as easy as possible. Residents will find visual aids on how to identify the types of pipes in the service lines, informational videos about lead service lines, a lead FAQ and step-by-step instructions on how to use a free homeowner lead and copper test to determine whether or not a service line is made of lead. It is crucial that every lead service line is on record, so the HWD strongly encourages residents to take part in this simple yet incredibly important surveyPleaseprocess.contact the Water District at 516-931-0184 or info@hicksvillewater. org if you should have any questions or require any additional information.

Childcare To Become More Affordable For Many Low And Moderate Income Families

“A strong childcare system helps buttress a strong economy,” said Adrian Fassett, C.E.O. of the Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk, Inc., a Patchogue-based not-forprofit that own and operates Way to Grow Child Care Learning Center in East Patchogue. “The reality is that working people can’t get to their jobs if they don’t have a quality, safe place to send their children. More workers are returning to an office setting following more than two years of working from home and we need to do all we can to ensure they have access to excellent childcare.”According to the Governor’s office, thousands of families will now be eligible for childcare subsidies as part of a $7 billion expansion of childcare funding in New York State. “I know firsthand how a lack of childcare can hurt your career, your family and your future, as a working mother when I was forced to leave my job to care for my child,” Governor Hochul said. “These historic investments in New York State’s childcare system will allow us to forge a new path forward for parents, especially mothers. It is the right thing to do, the moral thing to do, and will supercharge our economic recovery and support working families. Childcare is an essential service, and in New York, we will continue to do everything in our power to make sure more working families have access to Parentsit.” can be eligible if they are employed and earn no more than the 300 percent threshold, are enrolled in an education or training program, in mental health or substance abuse treatment, or are in an emergency situation of short duration. For example, a family of four can earn up to $83,250 annually and still be eligible for subsidized childcare.Tofind out if you are eligible under these new guidelines, please contact your local county Department of Social Services: Suffolk (631) 8543349, Nassau (516) 2278519. First Of Their Kind In The United States

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, Councilman Lou Imbroto, Councilwoman Laura Maier, Councilwoman Vicki Walsh and Town Clerk Rich LaMarca joined with local environmental groups to unveil new floating litter trap technology at Tappen Marina, the first of its kind anywhere in the United States. The ‘Collect’Thor,’ a silent, motorized waste collector which attracts and engulfs all solid or liquid waste floating on the water surface, was obtained by the Town through a grant from the Long Island Sound Futures Fund. The Town was selected by Cornell Cooperative Extension, in partnership with Friends of the Bay, The Waterfront Center, The Oyster Bay/Cold Spring Harbor Protection Committee, and Oyster Bay High“WeSchool.areso proud to have been awarded this grant the opportunity to lead the nation in rolling out new, innovative technology to protect our environment,” said Supervisor Saladino.

“Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County is grateful for the support from The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation’s Long Island Sound Futures Fund as it ensures that our critical work to protect and enhance the environment continues,” said CCE Executive Director Vanessa Lockel. “This funding enables our experts to work to restore the health of the Long Island Sound by removing floating debris that negatively impact our waters.  We appreciate the shared commitment to our waters and the communities that enjoy this natural resource.”Collec’Thors, the latest in marine debris collection technology, have been deemed the most efficient trash skimmers available for marine and coastal usage. They are specifically designed to target solid and liquid waste, including plastic bottles, cigarette filters, butts and packaging, microplastics and hydrocarbons. The technology uses a small pump to draw in surrounding water and skims any floating trash into its receptacle. The mechanism adjusts with the tide and is easily affixed to a floating dock or waterfront location.

The Town of Oyster Bay was the recipient of $16 million in Federal funds to assist renters facing economic hardships and housing insecurity as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The program, designed to help renters facing difficulty in paying their rent and utilities/ home energy costs, is being administered by the Long Island Housing Partnership and the official submission period has now re-opened. Qualifying residents can submit an Intake Form now through September 16, 2022 at 5pm by visiting stated,and(forTOBerapintake-SP.htmland(fororg/TOBerapintake.htmlhttps://www.lihp.theEnglishversion)https://www.lihp.org/theSpanishversion)followingthelinks.SupervisorSaladino“TheseFederal funds were granted to the Town of Oyster Bay to help residents recover from economic hardships created by the pandemic and government shutdowns. This rental assistance program provides critical funding to prevent homelessness and ensure those experiencing financial hardship are able to recover and rebuild their lives while having a stable place to call home.”

Ethical Friends of Children, a program helping needy families on Long Island, seeks clothing (tops, bottoms, pjs, sweaters and socks) in certain sizes. Specific sizes are: GIRLS: 3-4, 4-5 and 9-10 and BOYS: 7-8 and Ethical9-10.

Floating Litter Traps Installed At North Shore Marina:

“The Collec’Thors now in place at our marina will assist in our ongoing commitment to strengthen the ecosystem by removing debris from the water. I thank all of the local environmental organizations who assisted the Town in implementing this environmental technology, which collects up to 220 pounds of floating debris in just one cycle.” Two Collec’Thor traps have been installed at Harry Tappen Marina in Glenwood Landing, selected as an ideal location to help remediate plastic pollution in the Long Island Sound. In addition to support from local environmental advocacy groups, the project will also be supported by students from Oyster Bay High School, who will participate in the removal of debris, and analyze and identify marine pollution data. The project aligns with similar environmental initiatives in the Town to minimize plastic pollution in local waterways.

FLOATING LITTER TRAPS INSTALLED - Town Councilwoman Laura Maier, Cornel Cooperative Extension Executive Director Vanessa Lockel, Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, Town Clerk Rich LaMarca, Town Councilwoman Vicki Walsh and Town Councilman Lou Imbroto with the new high-tech Collec’Thor at Tappen Marina.

Friends of Children is an outreach program of the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island., established in 1985. “We assist more than 2,500 children and their families each year by providing them clothing for children from newborn to size 12 as well as infant furniture at no cost,” says Pat Spencer of Port Washington. The “store” – staffed entirely by volunteers – lets families pick out the things they need, at no cost to Thosethem.interested in making contributions of clothing or gift cards, should call Ethical Friends of Children at 516-280-5526 or email efoc@ehsli.org

the Oyster Festival has something for everyone. For nearly four decades, this annual tradition has provided so many great attractions, and we are confident that it will come back this year better than ever,” said Supervisor Saladino. “More importantly, this wonderful event does so much more than give patrons the chance to enjoy a delicious meal and purchase some great merchandise. The Oyster Festival not only allows us to showcase our beautiful Town and all it has to offer, it is a major fundraising event which benefits several local non-profit organizations.”TheOyster Festival is the East Coast’s largest waterfront festival and attracts up to 200,000 people from all over the tristate area to Oyster Bay hamlet for this iconic event. In addition to delicious food vendors, various merchandise exhibits, amusement rides and a waterfront family fun zone, this year, the Oyster Festival will be the first seafood festival to take part in the Town’s new shell recycling program, through which the Town collects shells from local partners in an effort to help strengthen the marine ecosystem.Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman added, “I am excited to join Supervisor Saladino in welcoming back the Oyster Festival after the popular event was canceled for the last two years because of the COVID pandemic. This great family friendly event brings thousands of visitors to Nassau every year, and is a great way to show off all Nassau County has to offer. Nassau is back and open for business!”

The District is also a member of New York’s statewide Water/ Wastewater Agency Response Network (NYWARN) of utilities that encourages and supports emergency preparedness across the state, as well as disaster response and mutual aid for public and private water and wastewater utilities. As a member of NYWARN, neighboring water suppliers from across the state provide emergency assistance when necessary.

Historically high fuel prices will undoubtedly prove to be one of the defining stories of 2022. As the average price for a gallon of gas reached heights drivers might never have imagined as recently as February 2022, some might have wondered just how much that same gallon might have cost roughly 100 years ago. According to the Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy, the average price for a gallon of gas in 1929 was 21 cents. Inflation calculators indicate that 21 cents in 1929 would have about the same purchasing power as $3.59 has in 2022, suggesting that drivers had a far less painful trip to the pump in 1929 than they have had for much of 2022.

The PWD is proud to help assist its neighboring water systems in case of an emergency.“Ensuring that our facilities can be selfsufficient without a moment’s notice is only possible because of the great work of our teams and professional engineers who designed the systems to operate under any condition,” said Commissioner Amanda Field. “Power outages can be extremely stressful periods of time for residents, so we want everyone in the POB community to rest assured that when it comes to all things water, we have it under control.” For further information, or if you have any questions, please call the District at 516931-6469 email info@ plainviewwater.org or activitiesup-to-dateFacebookortheemailbyupResidentswww.plainviewwater.org.visitcanalsosigntoreceiveinformationsubmittingtheiraddressthroughDistrict’shomepagefollowingthemoninordertostaywithDistrictandinitiatives.
