Parks Watch Program Looking to “RID” County Parks of illegal dumping, Suffolk officials today announced the launch of its newly created “Parks Watch” program that will provide greater citizen involvement in the protection of county owned public lands. Modeled after the highly effective national Community Watch program, “Parks Watch” asks parks users and adjacent property owners to be partners in ridding our parks of debris by notifying police and Suffolk County Parks Department personnel.

Tips of suspicious activity can now be called into the program’s dedicated RID

hotline at 631.854.1423 or emailed to RID@ suffolkcountyny.gov.

In advance of today’s announcement, the Suffolk County Parks Department has begun posting signs about the program and ways in which visitors can provide tips to authorities.

Beyond new signs, the Parks Department will also begin a social media and public awareness campaign to highlight the importance of this new program and of protecting our public lands from illegal and potentially toxic debris.

“We are pleased to be able to add another layer of protection for our parks,”

Parks Commissioner Philip Berdolt said. “With the assistance of our park patrons, we will be able to reduce instances of vandalism, dumping and other misuses, and ensure that people can use the parks safely.”

“Parks Watch” was created through Resolution 37-2017, sponsored by Legislator Kara Hahn, Chairwoman of the Legislature’s Parks and Recreation Committee, and follows the discoveries of illegal dumping and vandalism within several Long Island parks including Suffolk’s West Hills County Park.

The new “Parks Watch” program was one of several initiatives recently taken

by Suffolk County to protect the County’s vast park holdings from illicit activity. In April, Suffolk increased the financial penalties and, for the first time, allowed for jail time of anyone convicted of illegally dumping hazardous materials or waste on County property through legislation spearheaded by Legislator Hahn. Early this year, Suffolk officials also began installing surveillance cameras in some county parks as, a pilot program, to deter vandalism and assist investigators identify culprits.

Balancing Extracurricular Activities Many high schools, colleges and universities emphasize their goals of producing well-rounded students. Extracurricular activities teach students important life lessons, provide them opportunities to socialize and often stimulate their minds and bodies in ways that differ from the stimulation provided in the classroom.

Data from the U.S. Census Bureau states that, in 2014, 57 percent of children between the ages of 6 and 17 participate in at least one after-school extracurricular activity.

Children are more likely to participate in sports than clubs or lessons, such as music, dance and language, but each of these

activities can be beneficial to students’ development.

Students who participate in extracurricular activities may want to limit their participation to 20 hours per week. This is according to a group of professors from Stanford University and Villanova University who have been collecting data on the issue since 2007. In their report “Extracurricular Activity in High-Performing School Contexts: Stress Buster, Booster or Buffer?”, Jerusha Conner and Sarah Miles found that 87 percent of kids who would be considered to have packed schedules were perfectly happy unless they were doing more than four hours a day.

The “over-scheduling hypothesis” may be overhyped. This is the concern that too much organized activity participation leads to poor developmental outcomes. This hypothesis also suggests that hectic schedules also undermine family functioning, detract from schoolwork and possibly increase the risk of copycat behaviors and excessive competitiveness.

School buses are safe modes of transportation for children. Statistics from Transport Canada indicate that transportation by school bus is safer than by passenger car. School buses are large and heavy vehicles that protect riders during collisions.

School buses also help keep a greater number of passenger vehicles off of the roads during hightraffic school times.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that each year approximately 450,000 public school buses transport 23.5 million children to and from school and schoolrelated activities around the United States. Although safety is enforced while students are on the bus, it is also vital for students to remain safe before they board. Ensuring a safe bus stop requires diligence.

Safety starts with students and parents.

Students are under the authority of the bus driver while they are on the bus.

But before they board the bus, students typically are not supervised.

Chaperoned bus stops can help deter rowdy actions, particularly at crowded bus stops. Parents can rotate standing watch and keeping tabs on bus stop behavior.

Arrive early at the bus stop. Accidents can happen when people are rushing and not paying attention.

NHTSA advises getting to the bus stop at least five minutes before the bus is scheduled to arrive.

Stand at a safe distance.

Children should remain no less than six feet away from the curb or roadway while waiting for the bus to arrive. Parents should routinely remind students not to run and play at the bus stop.

Lobby for safe bus stop locations. District transportation directors are often tasked with choosing school bus stop locations based on local policies and attendance.

Only basic requirements may be addressed, such as distance between stops.

Parents and community members might be able to offer feedback regarding roads with low traffic volume and spots that offer maximum visibility during all seasons.

Minimize street crossings. Parents can drop children off on the side of the road where the bus will stop so the kids do not have to cross roadways unattended.

Use traffic assistance whenever possible.

Children who walk to bus stops are urged to walk in crosswalks and on sidewalks, and obey traffic controls. Parents can work with their children to find

the safest routes to the bus stop, such as on residential streets rather than hightraffic roadways.

Familiarize yourself with the route to the bus stop. Parents are urged to research the area and know where potential hazards on the route to the bus stop may lie. This includes potential human hazards.

According to BusBoss, a school bus routing and tracking company, it’s important for parents to know where registered sex offenders live and ensure kids avoid these homes on the way to the bus stop.

Other hazardous areas include spots where drug activity or other illegal behavior occurs.

Drive cautiously during school hours. Drivers should exercise extra caution and reduce speeds when schools are opening and closing. There will be many students on the roads between 8 and 9 a.m. and again between 2 and 4 p.m.

Maintaining school bus safety is of the utmost importance.

Students, parents and the school district can work together to make security a priority.

I don’t see anything? Luckily for them, the afternoon promised more stellar sights to behold.

As the sun began peeking out once again, a commotion erupted up on the sand behind us, as a small crowd gathered around what at first glance appeared to be a stray dog. Upon further inspection, it proved to be a small furry fox, munching on a bagel, as he calmly eyed the growing swarm of beachgoers.

He then trotted down the beach, bouncing from one blanket to the next, pausing under one woman’s umbrella as she sat engrossed in a book. Eventually, someone summoned a lifeguard, who determined that this particular fox was most likely a few years old and, though seemed friendly, was probably best left alone in pursuit of his dinner.

As the crowd gradually dispersed, the sound of applause was heard down by the water.

We turned to see everyone facing west, lifeguards included,

eyes fixated on something in the ocean. What now, is someone drowning? one lady was heard muttering. Well, I doubt the lifeguards would be standing applauding if that was the case, her husband retorted.

As we made our way down to the shoreline, we saw a giant spray of water shoot up from the horizon, followed by a humpback whale flipping through the air and disappearing below the surf.

Again, the crowd cheered. And again, the whale leapt into the air, as if taking a bow. I grabbed my phone and attempted to capture the sight, only to find myself filming several minutes of motionless water. But then, at last, he emerged once more. Out for yet another encore.

As we headed back to our beach blanket, we passed the little boy as he breathlessly encapsulated the day’s happenings. I have to say, I half expected a zebra to come barreling over the sand dunes. It was that kind of afternoon.

A report published in early 2016 by the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities found that many states now provide less financial support per student than they did before the recession took hold roughly nine years ago. Districts forced to work under tight budgets are increasingly outsourcing the costs of supplies to parents.

When parents fail to provide supplies, teachers are bearing the brunt of the costs to avoid seeing their students go without necessary resources.

An eclipse, a fox and a whale … what’s next? A zebra? These were the words overheard at Robert Moses Field 5 on the afternoon of Monday, August 21st, spoken by a little boy as he incredulously recounted the events of the day. Nearly 30 years his senior, I have to say I shared the sentiment.

What started as a somewhat spontaneous vacation day to spend relaxing on the beach, perhaps catching a glimpse of the highly publicized 70% of a solar eclipse, turned into a relative bucket list of random natural sightings the likes of which couldn’t have been better orchestrated if one tried.

After stealing a look at the crescent of golden light as the sky subtlety darkened around us, we decided it was only slightly as impressive as promised. The reactions from those on the surrounding beach blankets ranged from, Oh wow, that was incredible! to Wait, which end is it eclipsing from?

Labor Day History September of each year a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the U.S. territories.

The first Labor Day festivities included speeches and picnics, and many of the first workers honored were carpenters, machine and factory workers, and other industry workers. Today, the holiday celebrates many blue collar workers, including firefighters,

police officers, bakers, teachers, and pharmacists.

However, Labor Day has transformed into an endof-summer hurrah more so than a holiday to pay homage to workers. Rather than parades, many people flock to the seaside to soak up a few more of the sun’s rays before saying goodbye to the summer.

Records that show Peter J. McGuire, the then

state level, where New York became the first state to introduce a bill recognizing Labor Day. But in February of 1887, Oregon became the first state to pass a law recognizing Labor Day. Following Oregon’s lead, Colorado, Massachusetts, New York, and New Jersey officially recognized Labor Day. More than 100 years after Labor Day was first celebrated, debate remains as to who is responsible for the holiday. Regardless of the holiday’s origins, the way it is celebrated today is vastly different from how it was at its inception.

The first Labor Day was

general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and a cofounder of the American Federation of Labor, was the first person to suggest a day to honor workers.

However, there are other people who feel Matthew Maguire, a machinist, and later the secretary of Local 344 of the International Association of Machinists in Paterson, N.J., proposed the holiday in 1882. Soon after the Central Labor Union in New York adopted a Labor Day proposal and began plans for a demonstration and picnic.

In 1884, the first Monday in September was designated as Labor Day. The Central Labor Union encouraged similar organizations in other cities to follow New York’s example and hold their own holidays for workers on the same date.

By 1885, Labor Day was celebrated in cities across the country. However, it was not yet considered an official, federal holiday, and many people fought to secure legislation. Such legislation began on the

Reducing Risks of Sickness

School-aged kids who catch colds or the flu from their classmates can quickly spread those colds to their family members, who then might spread the colds further when they go to work. Preventing the spread of colds and flu at school is a team effort that requires the assistance of not just parents, but also teachers and students.

Still, parents might be the first line of defense when it comes to preventing the spread of colds and the flu at school.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 38 million school days are lost to the flu each year. Those lost days can affect students who miss lesson plans, but also affect parents, who often must take days off from work to tend to their sick children.

While there’s no way for parents to guarantee their children won’t catch a cold or the flu this school year, they can

take various preventive measures to increase kids’ chances of staying healthy and achieving perfect attendance.

Make sure kids are immunized and that their immunizations are current.

Vaccinations bolster kids’ immune systems. That’s important, as kids’ immune systems are naturally less mature than adults’, making them more vulnerable to germs and viruses. The CDC recommends that adults and children receive their flu vaccinations in October while noting that such vaccinations can be administered as late as January and still prove effective. The CDC also recommends that adults and children receive flu vaccinations each year.

Additional vaccinations may not need to be administered as often, but parents should still ensure kids’ are up-to-date with their shots.

Make sure kids regularly

wash their hands. Kids often catch colds by rubbing their hands that have been exposed to cold virus germs on their noses or eyes. To prevent that, parents can teach kids to wash to their hands thoroughly, including scrubbing the backs of their hands, between their fingers and around their fingernails. Kids should know to wash their hands regularly, but especially after they use the bathroom and before they eat, drink or touch their mouths, noses or eyes.

Keep kids home when they are sick. Parents don’t want their children to miss school, but kids who are suffering from colds or flu should be kept home.

This prevents the spread of colds and flu to classmates and teachers, and time to rest at home may help youngsters recover more quickly.

Teach kids to avoid common germ spots.

Germs can be lurking anywhere, but some spots seem to make more welcome homes for germs than others. Studies have shown that kids were most likely to encounter germs in schools on water fountain spigots and on plastic cafeteria trays.

Teach kids to never put their mouths on fountains and to avoid eating any food that might fall onto their trays in the cafeteria.

School-aged children are susceptible to colds and flu when spending time in the classroom. But parents can reduce their youngsters’ cold and flu risk in various ways.

Getting the Most Out of College Only 60 percent of college freshmen will graduate within 6 years according to the latest report from the National Center for Educational Statistics. That’s pretty scary stuff for collegebound students and their tuition-paying parents especially if loans are part of the financial formula.

Even for those students who make it to graduation, there may be some question as to whether they made the most of their time on campus.

As this Northern Michigan University senior reflects, “There I was, about to graduate with some random degree and feeling like I’d wasted my parents money.”

And from a University of Florida senior: “The problem with college is that you figure it out about the time you’re ready to graduate.”

Team YOLO

New Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Michele M. Johnson honored a group of local caring mothers known as Team YOLO prior to the August 12th Music Under the Stars performance of Jimmy Buffett tribute band “Barometer Soup” at John J. Burns Park in Massapequa. Team YOLO, an acronym for “You Only Live Once,” has competed annually in an obstacle course running event to raise money and awareness for the Morgan Center, a preschool for children with cancer located in the Town of Oyster Bay. Since it was formed four years ago by Dannie Taylor, a mom from Oyster Bay, Team YOLO has raised in excess of $85,000 for the Morgan Center.

“Whenever a local group gets together and champions an important and worthwhile cause, it is deserving of our recognition and admiration,” Supervisor Saladino said.

“The members of Team YOLO are particularly inspirational for all of the work they have done on behalf of children with cancer.”

Members of Team YOLO were recently asked to be guests on the Ellen DeGeneres show held in Los Angeles. “This group

of moms took that once in a lifetime opportunity and decided to further build awareness to the Morgan Center and provide details with how people can support the organization’s incredible work,” Supervisor Saladino said. “These selfless and remarkable women are a tremendous source of pride for all of us in the Town of Oyster Bay.” Since being on the show with Ellen DeGeneres, Team YOLO has used its platform to network with many major sponsors and currently has 65 moms registered to compete in the organization’s next running event slated for October in Hoboken, New Jersey.

Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Michele M. Johnson, herself a mother of three schoolaged children, helped coordinate Team YOLO’s special recognition program. “I was so inspired to see this regular group of local moms who banded together to achieve something extraordinary,” Councilwoman Johnson said. “This sort of spirit and energy is the very fabric of a vibrant community and I want to let this group know they are considered by many to be this Town’s quintessential role models.”

“The Morgan Center operates in our facility and provides preschool age children battling cancer the opportunity to learn and socialize in a safe environment,” Councilwoman Johnson said. “Children undergoing chemotherapy treatment have a suppressed immune system and the Morgan Center allows these children to interact in a setting where all of the parents understand the inherent risks and the importance of a germ free environment and limiting exposures. It is hard not be touched by the uplifting work being done there.”

The Morgan Center is provided free of charge to the children and their families.

Tuition and expenses are completely supported by private donations and fundraising.

“That is why the generosity and kindness of people like Team YOLO should be celebrated,” Supervisor Saladino said.

East Meadow UFSD student Elias Alfau, a dancer at Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA), had a once-ina-lifetime opportunity with the Lar Lubovitch Dance Company. Ginger Thatcher, an esteemed member of the company for nearly 30 years, taught LIHSA students a number of moves and gave them an inside perspective into the world of dance.

The LIHSA Master Class program is part of the school’s ongoing mission to provide students with an inside look at the industries they are pursuing, and to introduce them to mentors within their chosen fields.

The Lar Lubovitch Dance Company was founded nearly 50 years ago by legendary choreographer and award-winning dancer Lar Lubovitch. Since then, the company has premiered more than 100 original works in ballet and musical theater, most notably the Tony Awardwinning Broadway smash Into the Woods. They have performed in all 50 states in such notable venues as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and Avery Fisher Hall, and around the world in more than 30 countries.

Their performances have been broadcast on PBS and the BBC, earning an International Emmy Award.

Ginger Thatcher is currently Associate Choreographer for the company’s new musical, Little Dancer. Formerly a Principal Dancer with the Cleveland Ballet, Ms. Thatcher, has also served as Rehearsal Director for Complexions Dance Company (Australia, Italy). She worked on Broadway for the ballet Swan Lake, as well as the musicals Carousel, Big, A Year with Frog and Toad, and Oklahoma!

She has taught ballet and modern dance at top studios and companies, and is currently teaching at Ballet Academy East and Steps on Broadway in Manhattan.

Bike Locker Lottery Supervisor Anthony J. Santino and Town Clerk Nasrin Ahmad are inviting all commuters to participate in the Town of Hempstead Bike Locker Lottery. Eight free bike lockers are currently up for grabs at the Bellmore Train Station, and lottery winners will be permitted use of one locker for a oneyear period.

“Though the Town of Hempstead has increased local train station parking for town residents by more than 165 percent since 2016, commuters can still experience stressful mornings when looking for parking spots while trying to catch a train to New York City,” stated Supervisor Santino. “However, the eight winners of the bike locker lottery will have guaranteed ‘parking spaces’ for their bicycles, safe from weather and other hazards, just steps

from the tracks at the Bellmore Train Station.”

Each of the bike lockers is 4 feet tall, 6 feet long and 3 ¼ feet wide, all conveniently located on the north side of the tracks at the Bellmore train station. Each locker easily fits a standard bicycle, protecting it from damage, theft and bad weather. The town requires a $40 key deposit, which is refunded at the end of the one-year lease. No sub-leasing is permitted.

“I am proud to partner with Supervisor Santino to offer these bike lockers to eight environmentally conscious residents of the Town of Hempstead,” said Town Clerk Ahmad. “I look forward to revealing the winners of the lottery, which is being administered by my office.”

The lottery drawing will be held on Thursday, September 7th to randomly

select the eight winners.

General Douglas MacArthur High School senior, Erin Cassano, is currently working on her Girl Scout Gold Award and has completed construction of a raised bed garden that will benefit the school, its ABA (Applied Behavioral Analysis) students and the community.

The garden will be sustainable in keeping with the Girl Scout objectives to create a community legacy and a sustainable solution to a problem. As Cassano explains on her website at http://www.erincassano. wordpress.com/goldaward, a sub-irrigation system has been installed that will provide the needed water for the garden once it is planted.

The garden will serve to beautify the school, create a learning environment that will help in teaching students about the life cycle of plants, gardening and the benefits of sustainability and serve as

a model for people in the community to replicate in their home gardens and in other locations. To explain the benefits of raised bed gardening to anyone who is interested in learning about it, Cassano developed and has copyrighted a chart of reasons that is viewable on her website.

As part of her Girl Scout Leadership Journey, Cassano developed a game called “Guess Where I’m Grown” that she’s used in speaking with younger scouts about food systems and where food comes from.

“I’ve helped to create new awareness for sustainable gardening practices among the members of the Environmental Club at MacArthur High School, who were super helpful and generous with their time in the building and installation of this project,” she says.

Cassano’s Girl Scout Gold Award Advisor is Dr. David Friedman, who

with Mr. Matthew Zausin are her Science Research teachers and who offered encouragement and guidance throughout the stages of this project.

“I believe that another long-term sustainable impact of this project will be the ability of the teachers and advisors at my school to continue to expose students, in a hands-on manner, to the concepts of gardening, growing periods, food sources and other science related to agriculture,” Cassano says.

Cassano began her girl scouting experiences in kindergarten as a Daisy.

She will graduate in 2018 from MacArthur High School, and will attend college, but plans to check in on the project after graduation.

“I’m proud of this project and I’ll be certain to come back from time to time to see how the garden is growing,” she says.

Earning a driver’s license is a milestone in a young person’s life. Teenagers typically take to the open road without adults riding shotgun between the ages of 16 and 18, depending on where kids live. Although this can be an exciting time for them, it’s also a time that can change the family dynamic.

Parents may have mixed feelings about their children getting their drivers’ licenses.

Although many parents recognize the convenience of having another licensed driver in the house, it’s understandable if moms and dads are weary about inexperienced children behind the wheel.

Such fears are not unfounded, as vehicular fatalities remain the leading cause of death for many teenagers. In the United States, teens are three times more likely to crash per mile driven than adults, according to data from Allstate. To help reduce the propensity for crashes, injury and death, families can work together

to focus on safe driving tips.

Take a safe-driving course. Any licensed driver can benefit from a safedriving course. Check with the department of motor vehicles to find an approved list of driving courses available. In addition to providing valuable safety tips, enrollment in these courses may entitle people to discounts on auto insurance.

Stay off of the phone.

Texting and making phone calls reduces alertness on the road. That loss of focus, even if only for a few seconds, can result in drivers driving the equivalent of an entire football field without having their eyes on the road. Avoid mobile devices while driving. Pull over to make a call if there is an emergency; otherwise, leave the phone out of reach in a backseat.

Use the headlights. Many cars now feature daytime running lights. For those that don’t, engage the headlights when driving.

Rushing around to make it to class or other appointments can lead to speeding and other dangerous driving habits.

school guidance counselors or guest speakers also may make the rounds, visiting elementary schools directly. Be sure your student attends such information sessions so he or she can get an idea of what to expect during middle school.

Dispel any myths your youngster might have heard about middle school.
