On August 24th, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. will host its 2nd Annual Riverhead Walk for Alzheimer’s & Clambake, which will be held in beautiful downtown Riverhead. Continental breakfast and registration will start at 9 a.m., with opening ceremonies at 10 a.m. and a ribbon cutting and start of the Walk at 11 a.m. The Walk will begin at Milton L. Burns Park (formerly Grangebel Park) at Peconic Avenue

The Long Island Game Farm recently received a hammock made out of a used fire hose that was created by a retired firefighter for the Game Farm’s gibbons. The gibbons, who are sisters, immediately started enjoying their new hammock once it was installed in their cage. Tom Lambui, a retired fireman and husband of Stacy Lambui, who works in the Game Farm’s Customer Service Department, acquired an old fire hose from Anthony
J. Morabito, Service Representative, Firematic Supply Co. in East Yaphank. Mr. Lambui built the new hammock and presented it to the Game Farm for the gibbons to use. “We are so thankful for Tom’s generous gift,” says Melinda Novak, Vice P r e s i d e n t / C o - O w n e r, Long Island Game Farm. “We recently installed the hammock and the gibbon sisters immediately started enjoying it. It’s really wonderful!” A gibbon is a part of the
ape family, and spends the majority of its time in trees. Gibbons range in color from gray and black to brown. They have extremely long arms which help them balance and settle as they jump from tree to tree. They can jump more than 25 feet and land fairly easily. Summer Prep Work Pays Dividends
As summer comes to a close, many teens find it easy to get caught up in the stress and monotony associated with school. Some find it even easier to give up on the coursework assigned during the summer break. Reading all of the books and doing all of the mathematics packets may seem like the least desirable option during these warm months, but it is undoubtably the most crucial. Summer homework does not bring many students joy. Summer homework does, however have an enormous impact on your grades. Missing this first assignment can be detrimental to your first
quarter average. In an era where college admissions are at an all time high in selectivity, those few points can make or break a person. Something as small as forgetting to turn in that book report freshman year can, in time, prevent you from attaining your dreams. With this in mind, it is an absolute necessity to complete your work! Even if school hasn’t yet started, the choices you make can affect your standing in September. In my school, your summer work accounts for about 20% of your first quarter grade! That means, if you were to get a zero on that work, you could get a maximum of only eighty.
Study hard now, so you won’t have to the night before school starts. Doing a little bit of work each night will undoubtably make your last few days of summer more enjoyable. Even though reading a book or doing some math problems may seem like a terrible time, every moment you spend will be repaid when you get into the college of your dreams. Putting in the extra effort now will result in a positive outcome in the future. On the other hand, slacking during your summers will only haunt you. Take the first step towards a superior grade - do your summer homework!

Rebuilding Together and the American Red Cross have joined forces to help bring nearly 90 homes devastated by Hurricane Sandy back to safe and healthy housing conditions. Thanks to a $2.25 million grant from the American Red Cross to Rebuilding Together, these low-income homeowners can look forward to rebuilding their lives and returning to their communities. Rebuilding Together’s local affiliates and volunteers in New York City, Long Island, Bergen County and Jersey City will be providing free critical home repairs in many of the areas affected by Hurricane Sandy. Most of the homes will require modifications and repairs that may address electrical and plumbing issues, flooring, drywall, appliance replacements, painting, basement and exterior rehabilitation with the goal of ensuring all of the homes are safe, healthy and livable. Those eligible for services include low-income families, senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and veterans. “We greatly appreciate the opportunity to collaborate with the Red Cross in the long term recovery of communities devastated by Hurricane Sandy,” said John L. Formation Flights This Labor Day weekend the American Airpower Museum at Republic Airport will launch an unprecedented formation flight of historic B-25 Mitchell bombers and WW II escort fighters for a tribute flight near the World Trade Center and Statue of Liberty to salute our armed forces serving in the War on Terror. Throughout the upcoming holiday weekend, Friday, August 30th through Monday September 2nd, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., these aircraft will also be on public display at the museum’s Farmingdale facility along with a squadron of other World War II planes, vintage cars and period armor as it hosts its annual Wings, Wheels and Tracks celebration. Flight experiences will also be available in a B-25. Labor Day weekend adult admission at the museum is $15, Senior/ Veteran (with ID) is $10, children between 4 and 12 are $4 and children three and under are free.

A Time To Celebrate By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Birthdays. Some people love them, others despise that annual reminder that, like it or not, time is flying by – with or without you. Personally, I’ve always been a fan – not on the my-birthday-should-be-anational-holiday scale, but definitely as an occasion that I’ve looked forward to each year. It’s a time to celebrate with family and friends, and to show your appreciation to others when their special days come around. Too often, we get so caught up in our daily lives that we forget to acknowledge those who
play such an important role. Sure, those milestones can serve as not-so-subtle reminders that, hey, the clock is ticking – didn’t you have all sorts of things you wanted to accomplish by now?!? Better get to it! But I think those thoughts can creep in at any age, young, old or in between. We set hypothetical deadlines for when things “have” to be done, knowing full well that life rarely works out so perfectly. The best we can do is move forward, making a little progress along the way, pausing to celebrate and appreciate those things
– and people – who matter most. The rest – the gray hairs, the wrinkles, the aches and pains – they’re just normal wear and tear from a life well lived! So the next time a birthday comes along, milestone or not, try to enjoy it. Appreciate those who wish to appreciate you, and remember to pay it forward when their own special occasions come along. It’s nice to be remembered, and better than that – it’s nice to wake up to a brand new day - or year - with lots to look forward to.

It’s back-to-school time for college students. Avoiding the dreaded “freshman 15” weight gain is a challenge to some young students when faced for the first time with a daily array of healthy and not-so-healthy food choices. The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends that college students, and everyone, know their daily calorie needs and try to create a healthy eating plan that incorporates a few basic healthy eating goals. Weight Gain A Growing Problem More than 60% of adults in the US are either overweight or obese and the most significant weight changes occur in the 1829 year old age group. A study by Washington University in St. Louis on college students’ weight gain showed that body weight increased in 70% of the 290 students studied between the beginning of their freshman year and the end of their sophomore year. So what’s a few extra pounds? Obesity can lead to health complications such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Less than 1% of U.S. adults meet the definition for ideal healthy diet and essentially no children meet the goal. To successfully manage weight, the AHA encourages people to learn about healthier food choices and know how many calories to eat daily. The AHA offers a free online BMI/personal

Family Football Night Sports enthusiasts from throughout the Town of Oyster Bay are invited to attend a Family Football Night at John J. Burns Town Park in Massapequa on Wednesday, August 28th, at 7 p.m. Residents will feel like a part of the action during the evening’s planned activities, including a live interactive scrimmage with players from LIU Post.
Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto said the unique event will allow fan to go inside the game and experience football from a different perspective. “Coaches of the LIU Post Pioneers have agreed to wear a microphone during the practice, giving attendees the feeling of being inside the huddle,” said Oyster Bay Town
Supervisor John Venditto. “Attendees will discover some of the complex strategy and nuances that go into an NCAA football program.” Admission will be free for Town residents, but all attendees are encouraged to bring a can of food, which will be donated to Island Harvest to benefit the fight against hunger. The event will be preceded
by a youth clinic featuring players and coaches from LIU Post, as well as a player BBQ, which is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. “The Town of Oyster Bay is pleased to support the sport of football, which is interwoven in the fabric of the Long Island community,” said Supervisor Venditto. “It’s an honor to have an outstanding college team
like LIU Post practicing on one of our fields. I believe it speaks volumes about our outstanding facilities here in the Town, which are considered to be among the finest in the Nation.” Supervisor Venditto said the Family Football Night will provide a memorable night for fans of the sport and provide a rare opportunity to learn the sideline plays from
coaches. “The collegiate players serve as roles models for the Town’s young players, who can, one day, aspire to further their own education through athletics,” Supervisor Venditto said “Best of all, this event celebrates the game of football and advances a worthwhile charitable endeavor at the same time.”
