he Hicksville School District hosted 125 elementary school students in the Summer Academic Program, held at Dutch Lane Elementary School. In its first year, the program focused on math, reading and narrative-writing skills for students who need extra support in foundational skills. The five-week program, which was held five days a week each morning, was designed to help students become better prepared for September.

Waiting Out The Storm By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

As I sit here at home waiting for the floodwaters to recede from the latest torrential downpour to douse Long Island, I am reminded of how we are all truly at the mercy of Mother Nature. If Hurricane Sandy taught us anything, it was that no amount of preparation can adequately hold its own against the wrath of the elements.

In this, we are all equal.

those who will try.

Try to drive through three feet of water, try to navigate over icy roads, try to convince themselves of some way to rise above those circumstances clearly beyond their control.

If the past several years have taught us anything, it is that these efforts are futile.

Stay home. Accept the fact that, sometimes, it is better to wait out the storm than to drive (literally) into it.

The same can be said for life as a whole. As

much as we all have this desperate need to control everything, we can’t. Simple as that. Sometimes, we need to accept fate and wait out the figurative “storm” until calmer winds prevail. In these situations, patience is truly a virtue, an enviable trait known only to some.

And with that, I see rays of sun peeking through the clouds…

Let’s hope I don’t meet too many obstacles on the road ahead.

Island Trees Public Library Continued From 3

The Syosset School District held its annual Summer Stock showcase on August 7th-8th as 28 students ranging from elementary to high school dazzled the audience with an ensemble of Disney songs.

Titled “Disney Delights,” the Summer Stock performance featured Ariel, Peter Pan, Dumbo, Elsa and an appearance from the genius himself: Walt Disney. Narrated throughout the show with introductions to each song from cast members, the audience heard classics, such as “Under the Sea,” as

well as the new raging hit made famous by Syosset High School Alum Idina Menzel, “Let It Go.” Syosset’s Summer Stock program is designed for students with an interest in theater to continue enhancing their acting skills by staying active during the summer. Directed by Dina Bloomfield with assistance from Maria Cammarano, Summer Stock is also an opportunity to give firsttime performers a chance to steal the spotlight.

“What’s nice about summer stock is that it gives kids some structure

and gives them one extra thing to do over the summer,” said Chris Meyers, Syosset’s summer school principal. “Some of these kids have never acted before, but because this elective is available, they commit to this and it gives them something to do.

They often get to take a lead role in the performance.”

The student performers made also made a special appearance at the August 11th meeting of the Syosset Board of Education to deliver some highlights from the show.

Assemblyman Joseph Saladino honored his District Office summer interns.

Assemblyman Saladino said, “Their hard work and dedication surely did not go unnoticed. They all have a very bright future and I look forward to seeing them at the top of

their aspiring fields.”

At the lunch, he thanked and recognized interns Samantha Zimits of Massapequa Park, Michael Carboni of West Islip, and John Carroll of Massapequa Park.

Additionally, Assemblyman Saladino honored Saint Anthony’s High School

graduate Michael Carboni who recently earned the rank of Eagle Scout.

Michael Carboni’s Eagle Scout project included restoring a fishing pier in Babylon Village that was destroyed by Superstorm Sandy.

During an assembly with the Singing Bus Driver, Joe Guida, the students took a proverbial trip on a school bus and learned about basic bus safety. Guida also engaged the students’ imaginations while they accompanied him in the singing of such original songs as “The Dinosaur Walk,” the “Macaroni and Cheese” song and the “Circle Dance.”

The Veterinary Technology program at SBI Campus – Melville has applied for AVMA CVTEA accreditation, but cannot guarantee accreditation will be gained. Until the program is accredited, graduates of the program are not eligible to take the Veterinary Technician National Examination (VTNE), nor apply to the New York State Education Department, for licensure as a Veterinary Technician. This licensure is required to practice as a Veterinary Technician in the state of New York, which is typically required for employment.
