he Trophy Presentations at the Town of Oyster Bay Athletic Center in Hicksville were recently held. During the weeklong camp, children competed in intramural basketball games. Among those on hand were Coach Ed Dempsey, Coach Kelly Dempsey, basketball campers and staff. Thanks to all those whose time and effort contributed to the success of this program. A great time was had by all the participants.

On July 29th, Gershow Recycling was honored at The Daniel Brooks Memorial Education Awards for Students with Cancer ceremony for its ongoing involvement with “Can Tabs for Kids,” a program that raises money for the Sunrise Fund at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital in the fight against childhood cancer. Jonathan Abrams, Manager, Gershow Recycling, represented the company at the event, which was held at the Charles Wang Center at Stony Brook University. As part of the Can Tabs for Kids program, local schools, organizations and municipalities bring in aluminum tabs from soft drinks and pet food cans and place them in collection bins. Throughout the year, the bags are taken out of the bins and brought

to Gershow, where the contents are weighed and recycled. Since Can Tabs for Kids has been established, more than $6,500 has been raised. All of the money raised went to the Sunrise Fund at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital, an organization that raises awareness and funds for specific projects to assist local families. According to the American Childhood Cancer Organization, cancer is the secondleading cause of death among children between the ages of 4 and 14; almost 2,000 children will die of cancer this year in the United States. The Daniel Brooks Memorial Education Awards are given each year to students who have graduated from the Pediatric Oncology program at Stony Brook

Children’s Hospital and are pursuing post-high school education or training. The award was established in memory of Daniel Brooks, a Port Jefferson resident who completed treatment for leukemia at Stony Brook University Medical Center. He went on to obtain a degree in Special Education then returned to the medical center, where he played a significant role in the development of the School Intervention and Re-Entry Program, which transitions children with cancer back to the classroom following treatment. Sadly, Mr. Brooks’ life was tragically cut short in a motor vehicle accident. Since its inception in 2003, one hundred six patients have received 287 awards totaling $218,000.

This is 33 By: Jamie Lynn Ryan By the time you read this, I will have celebrated my 33rd birthday, as momentous an occasion as any, if you ask me. Because, really, every year is a milestone in its own right, a small commemoration of our respective lives as they stand at a given moment in time. Sure, nice round numbers generate parties and extensive recognition; but who’s to say that one year is more significant than the last, or the ones yet to come? As I write this, I am still two days away from officially marking the transition from 32 to 33, but in some ways, I feel like it’s already come and gone. Have you ever noticed that, when someone

asks your age, there is usually a subtle point in time when you’ve mentally moved on? Slightly over the halfway point, “I just turned 32” becomes “I’ll be 33,” and the years somehow meld together as one giant expanse of time. What’s the rush? In my case, anytime my age has occasion to be mentioned, it is usually met with incredulous looks and exclamations of, No way! You’re lying… You can’t be older than 25, maybe. Well, that would be nice and all, but no – I’ve been a member of the 30+ club for a few years now, and I’m still not quite certain what makes that fact so unbelievable to outsiders. Of course, so I’m told,

there will come a day – not too far down the line – where I will learn to greatly appreciate this misconception, and savor the countless times I am asked for I.D. (for scratchoff tickets and Rated-R movies, no less), but not today. Today, I am proud to be (almost) 33, and willing to embrace all that comes with this next year, this next milestone. If we’ve learned anything, it’s that we cannot unwind the clock. Time passes, people come and go, and each day is truly a gift. Neither dwelling on the past nor wishing for the future will change the present. And what a “present” it is. Happy “Day” to all, every day. See you on the flip side.

The new officer will be branched to a specific corps in the Army to serve on active duty or in the Army National Guard or Army Reserve. The lieutenant will attend an officer basic

Birch Family Services, a New York City non-profit organization is hosting its 3rd Annual 5K Race at the Hudson River Park on November 7th, at 12 p.m. This event will benefit the 1,500 children and adults with autism and other developmental disabilities that Birch serves daily throughout NYC. The race will start and finish at Pier 64 at West 24th Street and the Hudson River. Registration is available at www. birchfamilyservices.org or at 12 p.m. on the day of the race. The tax-deductible registration fee is $31.50

for all participants. Following the race awards presentation, all runners and supporters are invited to join the after party at Jake’s Saloon, 206 West 23rd Street. Oyster Bay Town Councilman Joseph G. Pinto recently honored the players and coaches of the Massapequa Soccer Club Boys Under 19 Arsenal Team at John J. Burns Park in Massapequa in honor of their victory of the coveted James P. McGuire Cup at the United States Youth Soccer National Championship.

The Massapequa Soccer Club Boys Under 19 Arsenal Team claimed this prestigious title by defeating St. Louis Scott Gallagher Soccer Club from Missouri 3-1 in the championship game. This is the first time since 1959 that a team from New York has won the championship game. Councilman Pinto, on

behalf of the Oyster Bay Town Board commended the 2015 Massapequa Soccer Club Boys Under 19 Arsenal Team for winning the James P. McGuire Cup at the United States Youth Soccer National Championship and bringing tremendous pride to New York State, and, especially, the Massapequa community.

Family Football Night Are you ready for some football? If so, then come to “Family Football Night” at John J. Burns Town Park in Massapequa on Tuesday August 25th, at 7:00 p.m. Football fans are sure to enjoy the event which features a collegiate scrimmage of the LIU Post Pioneers. “This is a great event where football fans are close to the action,” Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor John Venditto said. ”LIU Post has many talented players and it’s very impressive to watch the team’s knowledgeable coaches, led by Head Coach Bryan Collins, work with the players during a scrimmage. It’s a unique perspective that everyday fans don’t get a chance to see on television.” Admission will be free for Town residents, but all attendees are encouraged to bring two cans of food, which will be donated to Island Harvest to benefit the fight against hunger. The event will be preceded

by a youth clinic, which is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. Players and coaches from LIU Post will instruct youth football players on proper and safe tackling techniques. “The student athletes on the LIU Post football team serve as true role models for the many young players in attendance,” Supervisor Venditto said. “Perhaps one day, these youngsters will also be able to further their academics though athletics.” There will also be a barbeque following the scrimmage where youth players will have an opportunity to speak with the LIU players and coaches and receive autographs. “This scrimmage is always a fun night for the players and I know the team is looking forward to coming to John J, Burns Park in Massapequa for this year’s event,” LIU Post Head Coach Bryan Collins said. “This is an important night for our team as we prepare for the season.” Last season, the Pioneers

finished with a record of 8-4 and made their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament in nearly ten years. This year, they are looking to build on that success. “The Town of Oyster Bay is pleased to support the sport of football, which is extremely popular in the Town of Oyster Bay as it is throughout the country,” said Supervisor Venditto. “It’s great to have an outstanding college team like LIU Post playing on one of our fields. The Town of Oyster Bay has been acclaimed for having some of the finest parks in the Nation, and that is further supported by having LIU Post hold a scrimmage at John J. Burns Park. The young athletes who play on our fields are thrilled that they play on the same facilities as those who may someday play professionally.” John J.
