The Hicksville Water District (HWD) recently started a largescale water project of the District’s southeast portion. The water mains in this area’s date back to the 1950s, and the HWD is determined to get ahead of any potential problems the current system presents by engaging in this infrastructure overhaul. Over the course of the year-long project, residents will benefit from the replacement of approximately 14,000 feet of water mains, 25 fire hydrants and 320 water services from the District’s water main to the curb shut-off valve. “The Hicksville Water District’s foremost responsibility is providing our residents with the highestquality water possible,” said HWD Chairman Nicholas Brigandi. “By staying ahead of our infrastructure needs, we help ensure that we can avoid any potential problems in our distribution systems before they become larger issues. We promise our residents to minimize disturbances and make this process as easy on them and their families as Thepossible.”firstphase of the project was completed in 2017 and included installation of new water main on Lee Ave., London Blvd. (Michigan Drive to Cottage Blvd.) and Michigan Drive. The rest of the project will take place over the course of three phases, all of which will focus on different streets within the area. The locations and approximate times during which replacements will take place are as follows: · Project Phase 1B from August to November, 2022: Cottage Blvd., Auburn Lane and Essex Lane
· Project Phase 1D from June to August, 2023: Linden Blvd. (from Lee Ave. to Michigan Drive) and Farm Lane Work is expected to occur from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, with limited road closures. Residents whose driveways may be affected will be notified before work in their area begins. Traffic may be closed off during certain construction times, but all roads will be reopened outside of work hours. The District contacted residents of the area prior to construction, providing them with a detailed fact sheet about the project and an invitation to a virtual community meeting, which was held on July 27. During the meeting, District officials and H2M Architects + Engineers provided residents with a presentation detailing each step of the project and what it means for their community. Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, members of the Town Board and local restaurant owners today announced an innovative, new shell recycling initiative to strengthen our local marine environment. Under this program, the Town seeks partnerships with local restaurants and other entities to collect oyster and clam shells from dinner plates and kitchen preparation tables. Town aqua-culturists regularly pickup shells from local partners and deliver them to an environmental curing facility. Once ready for deposit into waterways, the shells will be strategically placed at the bottom of local Oyster Bay and Cold Spring harbors.“The shells from your dinner plate provide an excellent source of habitat for young shellfish to grow as they offer protection from predators and weather conditions,” said Supervisor Saladino. “My administration is committed to improving water quality, expanding the shellfish population and bettering our environment. This Oyster and Clam Shell Recycling initiative expands upon our ongoing efforts by recruiting local restauranteurs to recycling their shell-waste and better ourWhileharbor.”this Oyster and Clam Shell Recycling initiative helps the environment, it also helps restauranteurs toward achieving compliance requirements with the New York State Food Donation and Scraps Recycling Law while also reducing waste carting expenses. Local businessowners could also potentially receive a tax incentive, currently under review in New York State.
