Meet Guy. He’s a local business owner, former rock bassist, and current fan of LEDs. It didn’t hurt that he got $5,900 in rebates to replace his store’s old lighting with energy-efficient fixtures.* He says his store and his guitars look great in the new LED glow. And, with the monthly energy cost savings, he couldn’t be happier. How can we help your small business save?

Plainview Water District Congratulates Local Students As Finalists In Annual Water Conservation Poster Contest

The Plainview Water District (PWD), as part of its Preserve Plainview initiative, is proud to announce the winners of this year’s water conservation poster contest. The PWD, in partnership with the Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District, launches this program every spring for students in the community grades one through six. This poster contest serves as an exciting educational activity to help teach students about the importance of water conservation, while letting them express their own creativity.

“The Plainview Water District thanks all of the students and their teachers for participating and submitting their amazing artwork to our 2023 poster contest,” said PWD Commissioner Laykind. “Every participant puts forth an incredible amount of effort and creativity into their posters, which makes determining a handful of winners so challenging. The District looks forward to continuing this long-standing tradition with the school district as our youth are an incredibly important part in the conservation of our community’s most precious natural resource.”

The winners for this year’s water conservation poster contest are as follows:

“It is always an honor to get to work with the POB students and to see the time and originality they put into their entries,” said PWD Commissioner Andrew Bader. “Each year, the students amaze us with their submissions and knowledge on water conservation. The goal of this contest is to continue to educate young members of the community on the ways they can help us Preserve Plainview, so that they can bring these lessons with them into adulthood.”

The winners of the water conservation poster contest are selected after deliberation from the PWD’s Board of Commissioners on categories including creativity, design, and overall message. This year, the District collected submissions from students and the finalists were recognized at an award ceremony, which the PWD held on June 21, 2023 at its headquarters.

“It was a wonderful experience to take part in the District’s annual poster contest and to see the unique designs

and hard work that goes into the submissions,” said PWD Commissioner Michael Chad. “Every student that participated should be incredibly proud of their work. We hope the knowledge they acquired through this effort will help their parents, friends and other community members to be more mindful of their water usage and will lead to them initiating new conservation measures around their home this summer.”

Legislator Drucker Congratulates Syosset Boy Scouts Troop 170’s Newest Eagle Scouts

Nassau County Legislator Arnold W. Drucker (D –Plainview) honored Ian Louie and Connor Chan – Syosset Boy Scout Troop 170’s newest Eagle Scouts

– during a recent Court of Honor ceremony held at Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church in Syosset. During the ceremony, Legislator Drucker presented Nassau

County Legislature Citations to Ian and Connor in recognition of the accomplishments and community service that earned them the highest

rank in Scouting.

“By dedicating themselves to community service, these impressive young men have already done a great deal to strengthen the

fabric of their community,” Legislator Drucker said. “The leadership skills they have gained during their journey to the pinnacle of Scouting will certainly

serve them well in the years ahead, and I wish Ian and Connor tremendous success as they continue to pursue their dreams.”

Hurricane Season Is Here, But The Plainview Water District Is Prepared

In the event of a difficult hurricane season and other extreme weather, The Plainview Water District (PWD) is prepared despite any potential flooding or widespread power outages. The District is well equipped to continue to provide residents with the highest quality water possible, regardless of the weather. In the past, when our region has experienced significant storms—such as Irene, Sandy and Isaias—water never stopped flowing to Plainview-Old Bethpage (POB) residents.

“Every year, the District works diligently to take precautionary measures to plan for both short-term and long-term weather related situations,” said PWD Commissioner Marc Laykind. “These plans ensure that our supply and distribution system operations can handle any severe weather

event. We have planned accordingly and made the necessary investments in both infrastructure and manpower to keep water flowing twenty-four seven.”

All water pumps and treatment facilities rely heavily on electricity in order to operate. If a power outage does occur, the PWD has its own emergency generator facilities on standby at all of its plant sites to automatically take over supplying electricity. The generator equipment is maintained year-round and tested frequently to ensure it is always ready when needed. In addition, all members of the PWD are trained and prepared to use the equipment and handle many different emergency situations like hurricanes and tropical storms.

“Part of all of the PWD’s continued infrastructure and improvement

projects are designed to provide back-up power to our facilities,” said PWD

Commissioner Andrew Bader. “Ensuring that our facilities are self-

sufficient and can remain operational is due to all of the hard work of our teams and professional engineers who design these systems.”

The District is also a member of New York’s statewide Water/ Wastewater Agency Response Network (NYWARN) of utilities that encourages and supports emergency preparedness across the state, as well as disaster response and mutual aid for public and private water and wastewater utilities. As a member of NYWARN, neighboring water suppliers from across the state provide emergency assistance when necessary. The PWD is proud to help assist its neighboring water systems in case of an emergency.

“Any weather-related matters such as power outages can be extremely stressful situations to

deal with,” said PWD Commissioner Michael Chad. “We want our residents to be fully aware that all District facilities and staff are prepared to act immediately should our facilities lose power or be impacted in any other way by a severe storm. The Plainview-Old Bethpage community can be sure that the District will continue to provide high-quality water, no matter the circumstances surrounding the weather.”

For further information, or if you have any questions, please call the District at 516931-6469 email info@ plainviewwater.org or visit www.plainviewwater.org. Residents can also sign up to receive information by submitting their email address through the District’s homepage or following them on Facebook in order to stay up-to-date with District activities and initiatives.

Over A Dozen Restaurants Now Recycling Shells – More Urged To Join Environmental Efforts

Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board announced that the Town’s shell recycling program, which is completing its inaugural year, has been a tremendous success through partnerships with local restaurants and food vendors. To date, over a dozen local restaurants participate in the program, and more are welcome to join.

“Through is innovative program, the Town seeks partnerships with local restaurants and other entities to collect oyster and clam shells from dinner plates and kitchen preparation tables,” explained Supervisor Saladino. “Town aquaculturists regularly pickup shells from local partners and deliver them to an environmental curing facility. In just our first year, we’ve collected more than 20,000 pounds of oyster and clam shells,

diverted that waste from landfills, and saved restaurants in their carting expenses. Once ready for deposit into waterways, the shells are strategically placed at the bottom of local Oyster Bay and Cold Spring harbors, helping to strengthen our local marine environment.”

Shellfish are essential mollusks in the local marine environment as they filter water through their feeding mechanisms. A single adult oyster can filter up to 50 gallons of seawater per day, making shellfish Mother Nature’s most valuable marine cleansers. Studies indicate that by expanding shellfish populations in local harbors we can improve water quality for generations to come. While this program helps the environment, it also helps restauranteurs toward achieving compliance requirements with the New York State Food Donation

and Scraps Recycling Law while also reducing waste carting expenses.

Councilwoman Vicki Walsh added, “The Town’s Shell Recycling partner program brings the entire community together to help restore shellfish populations in Oyster Bay and Cold Spring Harbors by providing habitat for shellfish and other marine species, improve water quality, and restoring local food supply. It’s a win-win for the community and our environment and we invite more restaurants to join us today.”

To participate in this initiative or obtain additional information, restaurants should visit www.oysterbaytown. com/shellrecycling, or contact the Town of Oyster Bay Department of Environmental Resources at (516) 677-5943 or via email at environmental@ oysterbay-ny.gov.

Long Islanders Vote TOBAY To The Top Of Bethpage

Federal Credit Union’s “Best Of LI” Rankings

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board proudly announce that TOBAY Beach has been named the best beach on Long Island.

TOBAY received the most votes from Long Islanders to achieve first place in Bethpage Federal Credit Union’s “Best of LI” contest.

“The votes are in, and our beautiful TOBAY Beach has won Best of Long Island’s Award for Best Beach on Long Island! While it’s no surprise to the thousands who enjoy TOBAY every summer, the facility was recognized for its pristine shoreline, family-friendly spray park and playgrounds, and top-notch restaurants, concessions and marina.

A special thanks to the amazing Town of Oyster Bay Workforce –especially our lifeguards on duty protecting our swimmers – for making this achievement possible,” Supervisor Saladino said.

Located just 4 miles east of historic Jones Beach on Ocean Parkway, TOBAY Beach is the Town of Oyster Bay’s premier south shore summer destination. Once the backdrop for a Marilyn Monroe photoshoot, residents may choose to either enjoy the soothing sounds of the waves on the Atlantic Ocean beachside or bask in the calmer waters of the Great South Bay on the north side. This location features two restaurants with waterfront dining and entertainment options as well as several

Town Partners With U.S. Marine Corps To Install Wheelchair Lift

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently joined with the United States Marine Corps to install a wheelchair lift for disabled veterans to more easily access the Marines Corp League Sunrise Detachment on New York Avenue in Massapequa. The Saladino administration was awarded $9,500.00 in Federal funding for the project, providing the lift at zero cost to the Town of Oyster Bay and Marine Corps League. The lift was built entirely by veterans, as the manufacturer for the project, Bruno, is a Made in America Veteran-Founded Company and the installing contractor, Patriot Mobility, is a Veteran-Founded Veteran Operated Local Company.
