Tips for College Applicants Choosing where to apply to college is a big decision that can affect the lives of young students for years to come. The college application process can have more immediate impacts as well, as U.S. News reported that the average college application fee was $41 in the spring of 2015, meaning families can expect to spend several hundred dollars just to apply to colleges.

The rising cost of a college education coupled with a competitive job market only serve to emphasize the importance high school students and their families must place on deciding where to apply.

The following are a handful of strategies families can employ to make students’ decisions regarding where to apply to college a little easier.

Don’t hesitate from applying to a dream school. The Princeton Review defines dream schools as those colleges

or universities where a student’s academic credentials fall in the low end or below the school’s averages for students accepted the year prior. But even students who meet the academic requirements established by their dream schools may be hesitant to apply to such schools because of the cost of tuition. Students whose academic records fall just short of their dream schools’ criteria or whose financial means make attending their dream schools seem impossible should still apply to those schools. Financial aid might be available, and schools might look at more than just academic performance, particularly for students whose grades fall just short of last years’ average accepted applicants.

Don’t be deterred by application fees. Stanford University’s application fee for 2017 was $90, making the school one of the more

expensive colleges or universities to apply to. But many schools, including Stanford, waive those fees for certain applicants.

Students should not expect each school to waive their application fees, but they also should not let those fees deter them from applying, especially if they meet or exceed the application requirements.

Choose the right safety school. Safety schools are those colleges or universities where applicants’ academic credentials make them a near certainty to gain admission. But when choosing safety schools, students should pick schools that they would enjoy attending. Applying to a school simply because you can get in and not because you want to enroll there can make for an unpleasant college experience should you ultimately end up attending that college.

Motivation to be More Active Today’s students arguably have more on their plates than any generation that came before them. But even with their hectic schedules, kids still have free time, which many are not always using in the healthiest ways possible.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly one-third high school students play video games or computer games for three or more hours on an average school day.

Sedentary lifestyles can increase kids’ risk for being overweight or obese, and many parents struggle in their efforts to encourage their school-aged children to get off the couch and embrace physical activities. The following are a handful of strategies concerned parents can employ as they attempt to motivate youngsters to be

more physically active.

Choose the right activity.

Physical activity and organized sports are not one and the same. Kids can still be physically active even if they are not athletic or if they are simply not interested in sports. Find an activity kids can embrace, such as hiking, swimming or even riding bikes, and they will be more likely to get off the couch.

Limit screen time. Kids spend lots of time in front of computer and television screens, which can be detrimental to their overall health. Parents can place restrictions on the amount of time kids are allowed to spend surfing the Internet, playing video games and watching television, encouraging youngsters to spend time enjoying the great outdoors or playing with friends rather than spending it staring at a

screen .

Join in the fun. Parents can set positive examples by being physically active and even exercising with their children. Rather than retiring to the couch after dinner, take nightly walks or bike rides as a family.

This is a great way to get kids off the couch, but also a great way to spend more time together as a family.

Involve kids in your own pursuits. Parents who are weekend warrior athletes can involve their kids in their own activities. Take kids along on weekend jogs, kayaking trips and so on, all the while explaining the important role physical activity plays in living a healthy lifestyle.

Going Above and Beyond Teachers provide many things to their students. In addition to an education, support and guidance, many teachers also feel compelled to enhance their classrooms with supplies they’ve purchased out-of-pocket.

According to a poll of 1,500 teachers conducted by the educational resource Edutopia, 93 percent of teachers feel obligated or somewhat obligated to buy school supplies for their classrooms with their own money. The Education Market Association says

that virtually all teachers wind up paying out of pocket for supplies. The amounts spent annually can be upwards of $1,000 per teacher. In addition, not all of the teachers funding supplies work in low-income districts.

A report published in early 2016 by the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities found that many states now provide less financial support per student than they did before the recession took hold roughly nine years ago. Districts forced

to work under tight budgets are increasingly outsourcing the costs of supplies to parents. When parents fail to provide supplies, teachers are

bearing the brunt of the costs to avoid seeing their students go without necessary resources.

Helping college students “figure it out” sooner rather than later is what the latest edition of the awardingwinning “Been There, Should’ve Done That 995+ Tips for Making the Most of College,” (Front Porch Press) continues to do. The 4th edition again draws from interviews with seasoned collegians across the U.S. According to author, Suzette Tyler, a former academic adviser at Michigan State University, “their ‘expert’ advice is refreshingly insightful and often more encompassing than might be found in an adviser’s office.”

Only 60 percent of college freshmen will graduate within 6 years according to the latest report from the National Center for Educational Statistics. That’s pretty scary stuff for collegebound students and their tuition-paying parents especially if loans are part of the financial formula.

Even for those students who make it to graduation,

Transitioning to Middle School school. The following are a few ways students can handle their transition to middle school.

Participate in a school-based transition program. Middle schools frequently host open houses for elementary school students, who can take tours of the campus.

Parents can take part in these events with their children. If your schedule does not allow you to attend, then schedule a private tour with the middle school principal or a faculty member. Middle school guidance counselors or guest speakers also may make the rounds, visiting elementary schools directly. Be sure your student attends such information sessions so he or she can get an idea of what to expect during middle school.

Dispel any myths your youngster might have heard about middle school.

Youngsters hear lots of things about middle schools, and much of what kids hear might be untrue.

Ask kids what they have heard about the schools

they will be moving on to, and then do your best to dispel any myths.

Find a middle school buddy. Ask an older sibling or invite someone who is currently enrolled in the school to speak with your child and answer any questions he or she may have. Hearing directly from a fellow student may make your child feel more comfortable about what to expect.

Talk about any other fears. Engage in an open dialogue with your son or daughter about any additional fears he or she may have. If students are worried about academics, spend some time over the summer going over the curriculum. If the potential for peer pressure is a cause for concern, reinforce advice on how to react to peer pressure.

Parents and their children can take several steps to make students’ transitions to middle school as smooth as possible.

Art can enrich the lives of people young and old, male and female. The arts can introduce adults and children to different cultures and traditions, while also helping them to develop more fully as human beings.

While some may feel the benefits of the arts cannot be measured, the nonprofit organization Americans for the Arts notes that kids who are involved in the arts are four times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement than kids who are not involved in the arts.

And though mathematics and science may not be the first thing people associate with the arts, kids involved in the arts are four times more likely to participate in math and science fairs than kids who are not involved in the arts.

Parents can do a lot to make art a bigger part of their kids’ lives.

The following are some simple ways parents can bring more art into their

kids’ lives, courtesy of Americans for the Arts.

Join in the fun. Parents can make art more fun for kids by playing music around the house and singing and dancing alongside their youngsters.

In addition, read a book to or with your children and join in when they pursue other artistic endeavors, such as drawing or painting.

Find local events.

Many school districts have slashed their arts budgets in recent years, but parents can still find local arts events for kids in their communities. Peruse the local newspaper and other community-based periodicals for cultural events for kids. Support local theater groups by attending performances with your children and explaining to them that the performers live in the community just like they do.

organizations typically rely on donations and volunteers to support their programs. Parents who want to instill a love of the arts in their children can help local organizations’ fundraising efforts and even volunteer their time if the opportunity presents itself. If possible, take kids along when volunteering so they can get some firsthand experience with the arts.

Encourage kids’ artistic pursuits. Some kids may decide to pursue artistic endeavors on their own, and parents can encourage such pursuits. Celebrate kids’ participation in artsbased activities in school and in the community, recognizing their hard work in the same way you would acknowledge their successes in the classroom and in sports.

A child’s school-aged years are filled with many different lessons and experiences. While in school, kids have the opportunity to broaden their horizons and meet new people.

Many students will attend various schools before moving on to college, and therefore they must learn how to adjust to new schools. While many students attend elementary school together for years, students may not know their classmates once they make it to middle school, which tends to boast larger student bodies than elementary schools. That’s because many middle schools’ student bodies are a combination of several elementary schools.

Making the transition from elementary school to middle school or junior high can spark anxiety in students, but that does not have to be.

Spurring Interest in the Arts

Today, I turn 35, making that dreaded leap into the next age bracket. So long 1834. It’s been fun.

Though age is but a number, it does tend to carry added significance the higher those digits climb. Each year brings with it a sort of reevaluation of life. Where am I at? Where do I want to be?

And, most importantly, how to traverse that at-times tricky road between points A & B. Uneven as it might seem, I do believe we all have a path we are destined to travel. How we choose to navigate it remains somewhat open-ended.

I’ve always felt my generation existed on the cusp of two worlds. A child of the 90’s, my teen years were spent listening to the sounds of *NSync and Britney Spears and watching T.G.I.F. on ABC

Friday nights. The entire grunge movement passed me by, as did many of the cult classic movies of the time.

Twenty years later, I have found a new appreciation for all that came before.

Pop culture aside, I feel my particular age group remains the last of the “old school.”

We were brought up in an age where technology was limited to televisions and radios, Walkmen and cassette tapes. No one had a cell phone until I was well into college, perhaps a beeper if they were lucky. If you wanted to reach a friend, you called their home and most likely were greeted by their parents, who knew you by name. A night out consisted of being dropped off at the local mall or movie theater, then picked up by those same parents and taken

to a local diner. To say things have changed would be an understatement.

Of course, this is the case with each generation, as its members grow and flourish and begin to explore the world on their own. We pick up on elements of those who came before and modify them to fit our constantly evolving view of our surroundings as they, too, evolve on a near daily basis.

The hope, in the end, is that we will never completely let go of those things which shaped us during our most formative years, the core values we were raised with. No matter how life may change, no matter how many age brackets we pass through, we must remain true to ourselves.

Here’s to 35. Here’s to the next chapter, a fresh page in the old book.

Long Island Heart Walk Thousands of Long Islanders are expected to join the American Heart Association’s Long Island Heart Walk on Sunday, September 17th to raise funds to fight heart disease and stroke, America’s No. 1 and No. 5 causes of death.

The annual event begins at 8:30 a.m. at Jones Beach, Field 5 in Wantagh.

The non-competitive, three-mile walk includes teams of employees from local companies, along with friends and family members of all ages.

Federation of Organizations honored volunteers from its Foster Grandparent and Senior Companion programs this past June at Stonebridge Country Club in Smithtown, New York. More than 250 guests attended The Senior Volunteer Recognition Luncheon, held annually to recognize dedicated seniors making a difference in the lives of children with special needs as well as homebound seniors.

During the event, emceed by News 12’s Doug Geed, Federation’s Chief Executive Officer, Barbara Faron, presented Chief Operating Officer Philip Matcovsky as the organization’s “Man of the Year,” for 30 years of outstanding service.

Matcovsky joined Federation in 1987 as a counselor in the homeless outreach program before moving up the ranks to become a supervisor, director and Chief Operating Officer. As COO, Matcovsky has been instrumental in helping Federation and its 500 employees navigate major changes to managed care, while managing day-to-day operations of an agency with a $48 million budget.

He continues to strive for the best possible care for Long Island seniors, as well as individuals who are homeless or living with mental health challenges.

Federation’s Senior

Director of Outreach Services, Tracy Falkner, LMSW, awarded Volunteer of the Year Awards to Foster Grandparent Jeanette Ingenito and Senior Companion Lucy Caracciola for their exemplary care and service.

The agency’s 140 Foster Grandparents currently mentor more than 2,500 children in Suffolk County, while Federation’s Senior Companion Program provides support and assistance to frail homebound seniors.

Senator Phil Boyle (NYS 4th Senate District) and Ed Romaine, Town of Brookhaven Supervisor, served as Guest Speakers at the event, commending Federation’s volunteers for their efforts to enhance the quality of life of Long Island children and seniors.

Other notable attendees included New York State Assemblywoman Kimberly Jean-Pierre (Assembly District 11) and Suffolk County Legislator Tom Cilmi, who represents the Tenth Legislative District of New York. Representatives from Senator John E. Brooks’ office (NYS 8th Senate District) and Tom Croci’s office (NYS 3rd Senate District) were also in attendance.

Balancing Extracurricular Activities since 2007. In their report “Extracurricular Activity in High-Performing School Contexts: Stress Buster, Booster or Buffer?”, Jerusha Conner and Sarah Miles found that 87 percent of kids who would be considered to have packed schedules were perfectly happy unless they were doing more than four hours a day.

The “over-scheduling hypothesis” may be overhyped. This is the concern that too much organized activity participation leads to poor developmental outcomes. This hypothesis also suggests that hectic schedules also undermine family functioning, detract from schoolwork and possibly increase the risk of copycat behaviors and excessive competitiveness.

However, in the study “The Over-Scheduling Hypothesis Revisited: Intensity of Organized Activity Participation During Adolescence and Young Adult Outcomes,” researchers J.L. Mahoney and Andrea Vest determined that, controlling for

demographic factors and baseline adjustment, extracurricular intensity was a significant predictor of positive outcomes and unrelated to indicators of problematic adjustment (e.g., psychological distress, substance use, antisocial behavior) at young adulthood.

Even though extracurricular activities are largely positive - even when schedules are packed - parents need to be aware of the diminishing returns of too many activities. This is something called the “threshold effect.” Benefits from extracurriculars can level off when too many activities are being juggled.

If a child is experiencing anxiety, sleeplessness or depression, or seems overly stressed, it could be time to reduce students’ time spent doing structured activities.

It’s essential that families use the cues given by kids to assess what students can handle. And children should be encouraged to be honest with their parents about their extracurricular activities as well.

Going Green at School Eco-conscious lifestyles may have transformed the ways people behave at home or on the job, but many schools have taken a little longer to embrace eco-friendly practices.

Mike’s show recognizes the good deeds of others and in turn does something special for them. Bryan Blomquist, President of Island Sled

Hockey, has dedicated much of his time to the organization’s enthusiastic young participants, serving as a role model and acting as a mentor.

Under Bryan’s direction, Long Island Sled Hockey fosters, promotes and encourages sportsmanship, teamwork and camaraderie. Long Island Sled Hockey also focuses on the development and nurturing of positive

Sanitation Samaritans

New Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and new Councilman Thomas P. Hand recently honored nine Town employees from the Department of Public Works Division of Sanitation and the Department of Environmental Resources Solid Waste Disposal Complex who went above and beyond the call of

duty to help a Hicksville resident locate his wife’s wallet and cell phone at the Town’s garbage landfill.

The resident accidentally threw them out the items with the morning trash.

Although it was certainly an unpleasant job, the employees understood the importance of the task and did not hesitate in sorting through mounds of garbage in searching for

the lost valuables.

Ultimately, much to the happiness of the resident, the search was successful and the wallet and cell phone were recovered.

Supervisor Saladino and Councilman Hand proudly presented citations to the employees for their good deeds and for serving as important role models to others.

As part of the K-5 Academic Summer Program at Old Country Road Elementary School in the Hicksville Public School District, students participated in Sticks and Stones, an interactive anti-bullying show led by Pint Size Productions, Inc. presenter Lyle Cogen.

The show was based on

the book, “Nobody Knew What To Do” by Becky Ray McCain, and featured Cogen’s presentation of songs, poems and skits that were aligned with its anti-bullying themes.

Students learned about the perspectives of three characters - the bully, the bystander and the bullied child - and were

encouraged to continue being mindful of their actions and attitudes.

By hosting the summer presentation of Sticks and Stones, the district supplemented the character education that students continually take part in during the school year.

New Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino today honored TOBAY Beach Lifeguard John McGovern for an incredible 50 years of dedicated service to the residents of the Town of Oyster Bay. Since joining the Town of Oyster Bay as a Seasonal Lifeguard in 1967, John McGovern’s diligence and attention to detail, as well as his hard work and professionalism, earned him the enduring respect and admiration of his peers.

“John has dedicated the last five decades of his life to protecting the lives of swimmers and beach enthusiasts at TOBAY Beach and we are very proud to celebrate this incredible milestone,” Supervisor Saladino said. “His love for the job and his dedication

to service are typical of the men and women who so ably serve as Town of Oyster Bay Lifeguards.”

As a physical education teacher working in the Massapequa school district, McGovern felt lifeguarding was the perfect summer job.

Initially John provided swim lessons at Florence Avenue Beach in the morning and then travelled to Tobay Beach to work as a lifeguard on the bayside in the afternoon.

By 1975, John was a Senior Lieutenant at the ocean, joined by his wife Donna, who was a staff lifeguard.

Through many years of hard work, and dedication to the beach, John became Assistant Captain in 1990 and was later joined by his son Kim, and his daughter Stacey, who were also ocean guards. As of the

summer of 2013, McGovern became the Captain of the TOBAY Lifeguards. With his leadership, the TOBAY lifeguard corps is second to none and remains the best trained, most loyal, and most dedicated corps on the east coast.

“John established a legacy of excellence that makes him a role model for every lifeguard to follow in his footsteps thereafter,” Supervisor Saladino added. “Every day he watches over the sands and beaches of TOBAY, he exemplifies and upholds the finest traditions associated with ocean lifeguarding. He represents the best of the best and we thank him for his dedicated service to residents of the Town of Oyster Bay.”

Approximately 750 students are enrolled in the 2017 Syosset Central School District Summer School program, which offers a wide variety of enrichment and remedial courses for students to remain active and mentally sharp while demonstrating their creativity, learning some new skills and reinforcing their knowledge in core subject areas.

About 45 staff members have been involved in administering courses to Syosset students from grades K-12. Summer Stock culminates with a performance in August that is open to the community.

This year, the group will present “Willy Wonka Jr.” on August 10th and 11th at the high school, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Band and orchestral classes, as well as the dance class will also culminate with concerts for parents.

Remedial offerings cover basic skills and multisensory reading for elementary students; language and math for middle school students; and English, math, physical education, science and social studies courses for high school students.

Driver’s education is also available.

“Syosset Summer School provides students an experience for enrichment and remediation in a setting that all children can grow from,” said Summer School Principal Chris Meyers. “The courses require students to engage in many aspects of learning while experiencing an enjoyable summer.”

Family Appreciation Day Long Island Game Farm - Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo was founded in 1970 by Stanley and Diane Novak.

Coney Island USA and Professa Adam Rinn Present: Sideshow School.

Coney Island USA’s Sideshow School is the only school of its kind where students can learn the ancient and sometimes deadly secrets of the sideshow. A new crop of thrill seekers will be attending the next session, scheduled for August 22nd-24th at Sideshows by the Seashore.

Now in its 17th year,

Sideshow School has taught dozens of potential circus, sideshow and carnival workers how to walk on glass, eat and breathe fire, swallow swords, and hammer nails into their faces, along with a handful of other of the sideshow’s ‘working acts.’

Students take the class at their own risk and must sign a hold harmless agreement absolving the school and its instructors from any possible injuries

the students might incur.

“In all the years that I’ve taught sideshow school,” Dean and Professa, Adam Rinn declares, “nobody has ever gotten hurt.” Rinn himself was a graduate of the Sideshow School and went on to become a prolific performer who has entertained audiences throughout North America.
