The Social Brain is a brand new 501(c)(3) non profit in the state of New York. They are on the brink of breaking through as one of the most unique and helpful organizations that serves those suffering from a brain injury. Their mission is to provide brain injury survivors the opportunity to build friendships through socialization and reduced isolation. This organization began in January 2019 when a group of individuals, families and professionals joined together to brainstorm ideas of how they can help brain injury survivors socialize and partake in various hobbies together. Many survivors spend much of their lives in and out of rehab and home feeling isolated, but The Social Brain formed to change that. After hosting various events for survivors such as a day at Sweetbriar Nature Center, a Bowling Event, a Library Day and an afternoon at Four Star Ranch, it was obvious that they were reaching a population in need. Just last month, The Social Brain was granted 501(c)(3) status in the state of New York and they have just started working out of a community center located at 202 Middle Country Road in Middle Island. The Social Brain operates solely on volunteers and their outreach comes not only from word of mouth, but from help through their recent partnerships with local hospitals, school districts, neurology departments, Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead and St. Joseph’s College. Survivors from all over Long Island are welcome to get involved with The Social Brain. On average, each event they host has about 30-40 participates and there is no age restrictions. Recently a 4-week session hosted by The Social Brain and Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead started to help survivors learn social skills, build friendships, find cues from others and interact with peers. The first session was on August 6th and the following 3 sessions will be on August 13th, 20th and 27th. Age groups are broken down from ages 5-7, 8-12, teens and adults. Golden Eagles Earn Placement The Bethpage Union Free School District and community gathered on July 21 for a ceremony to welcome the sixth group of inductees into the Bethpage Athletic Wall of Fame. This year’s class included 1978 graduate Fran Brown along with former coaches Samuel Prioleau, Harry Settino Jr. and Donna Weikman. Fran Brown was a four-sport athlete and represented the Golden Eagles in field hockey, volleyball, basketball and softball. She was part of many league and divisional championships in volleyball, basketball and softball in addition to being captain and the most valuable player of the county champion field hockey team. She went on to play volleyball at Slippery Rock University. Samuel Prioleau was a beloved teacher, mentor

and coach in Bethpage for 35 years. He holds one of the highest winning percentages on Long Island as a baseball coach and led the Golden Eagles to a county championship. Under his guidance, the junior varsity football team achieved many undefeated seasons. As a mentor, he encouraged students to fight for what they believed in and made them believe they could accomplish anything. Harry Settino Jr., had a positive impact on many student athletes during his 23 years in Bethpage. He was a “jack of all trades” by coaching varsity football, varsity baseball, girls varsity track and field and boys varsity bowling. He also went on to officiate basketball and baseball in addition to being a Nassau County lifeguard supervisor. Donna Weikman was

a symbol of excellence for the Bethpage girls bowling program for 43 years with 400 compiled wins, 21 conference championships and two county championships. She began her career in Bethpage in 1969 as a physical education and health teacher in addition to her role as a coach. Donna coached the field hockey team for 17 years that included five division championships, six conference championships and three county championships. She also led the badminton team for 28 years with a total of 312 wins and 11 conference championships. “We are very proud to welcome these four inductees into the Bethpage Athletic Wall of Fame,” said Superintendent of Schools David Schneider. “They are proud Golden Eagles.”

Councilman Anthony D. Macagnone and Supervisor Joseph Saladino today announced that the Town of Oyster Bay is participating in a 2019 Soldier Collection Drive in an effort to gather needed supplies to be sent to the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces serving in the homeland and around the globe. The drive will take place through Monday, September 30th. w“The Town of Oyster Bay is proud to support our hometown heroes by collecting supplies for those stationed around the globe,” said Councilman Macagnone. “Each year, residents and Town employees open their hearts and wallets to purchase much-needed supplies for those protecting the freedoms we hold dear.
