Oyster Bay Happenings can now visit either Town Hall North or South, and those seeking certain approvals can walk out of Town Hall the very same day with their approved permit. This is a win-win for residents seeking to improve their home and get contractors to work right away.” Under the SameDay-Permit program, residents can receive permits for a number of projects, including fencing, swimming pools, air conditioning units, permanent generators, plumbing, and solar panel systems, to name a few. Applications that are found to require a variance will be given the necessary paperwork from the Planning and Development

A Funny Thing Happened A funny thing happened on my last trip to the beach; rather, several amusingly bizarre things that left my friend and I shaking our heads in bewilderment and wondering if we were, in fact, part of some sort of candid camera exposé. On this particular afternoon, we literally sailed along the Robert Moses Causeway, over all three bridges, and were parked in less than 30 minutes - a record-breaking feat, to be sure, and a far improvement over the recent painstakingly slow bumper-to-bumper expeditions we have had to contend with. Amazed at this fortunate turn of events, we began to unload the car and make our way to the sand, when we noticed the deafening silence. Usually, the beach is filled with the sounds of children laughing and playing, radios blasting a cacophony of musical notes, the waves crashing against the shoreline… but on this particular afternoon, there was only silence. It was as if we had entered a parallel universe, a bubble of tranquility. Once we settled in, I noticed the enormous number of seagulls who seemed to be hovering nearby, taking off and landing a bit too close
for comfort. Just as I was thinking this one particular winged creature appeared to be launching its flight awfully low to the ground, my friend burst into laughter as he barely cleared her head. “He literally just hit me in the head!” she exclaimed. “I just felt his feet running across my hair!” From Candid Camera to Alfred Hitchcock, in a matter of minutes. After an hour or so of baking in the hot sun, we decided to embark on our regular trek toward the Lighthouse in search of seashells, and of course that picture perfect shot of the waves crashing onto the shore. This time, I decided to make it my mission to collect several dozen oyster shells in order to create a heart-shaped work of art in the sand. About one hour, and several ocean wipeouts of my masterpiece later, we decided to head back. Now generally, after a lengthy absence, it is perfectly normal to find our blanket surrounded by new neighbors, or perhaps none, as the beach tends to begin to empty in the late afternoon sun. This time, we were greeted by a man, sitting in a single chair, surrounded by about a half dozen assorted beach bags,

coolers and folding chairs - and an umbrella… one giant umbrella, staked right at the edge of my blanket, engulfing our entire area in complete shadow. I contemplated asking him to join us; then settled on politely asking him to move, as I hadn’t come to the beach to share his umbrella. He stared at me blankly, expressionless. Then, without a word, he slowly, deliberately got up and moved his umbrella - about half an inch. Completely bewildered, my friend and I exchanged a look. Was he serious? Were we the only people who understood the concept of personal boundaries? An entire field of sand, and here we were fighting over one square foot of space. Flabbergasted, we decided to gather our things and move slightly up the beach, to a completely empty expanse devoid of rogue umbrellas, seagulls and any other potential pitfalls. As we settled into this new spot, we were startled by the sound of people squealing and turned to see our old area now engulfed by the high tide. And there, in the middle of the surf, sat our old friend and his umbrella.

New Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board this week announced the opening of a new Planning and Development Satellite Office in Town Hall South to assist residents with building permit applications. The Supervisor further announced a new SameDay-Permit program available at both locations for a variety of projects. Supervisor Joseph Saladino stated, “On day one, Commissioner Maccarone and I set out to revamp the Planning and Development Department to better assist the residents of our town. By: Gail Apple Gardner Feel like writing a poem about nothing I really have nothing to say didn’t go out of the house at all really, a very boring day Didn’t mind doing nothing usually looking for something to do nothing out of the ordinary happened not depressed or even feeling blue Just writing a poem about nothing testing out words that just come to mind writing a poem, with nothing to say is pretty easy, so I find So like I said, nothing going on here my head is empty of anything deep I guess I’m writing a poem about nothing because I just can’t fall asleep So nothing new, exciting or alarming nothing happy, funny or sad just writing a poem about nothing that turned out to be not so bad.

Eco-conscious lifestyles may have transformed the ways people behave at home or on the job, but many schools have taken a little longer to embrace ecofriendly practices. But that doesn’t have to continue, as younger generations of students are growing up green and ready to embrace some green strategies in the classroom. One of the easiest steps to take is to reduce paper usage. According to Edutopia, a K-12 learning and education resource, the average school uses approximately 250,000 pieces of paper per school year. This estimate is based on an average of 50 reams of paper per teacher at a 100-teacher school. Instead of relying so heavily on paper, students can take notes on laptops or tablets while teachers can rely on smartboards and notebooks for classroom lessons. When paper must be used, make a concentrated effort to discard it in designated recycling bins in each classroom.

Athletes Honored Syosset Central School District Director of Athletics, Physical Education and Recreation Drew Cronin highlighted the successes of spring athletes and athletic teams at last month’s board of education meeting. Individual honorees were the varsity girls golf state qualifiers Malini Rudra and Sarah Sung; varsity boys lacrosse AllAmerican player Daniel Ochs; varsity boys All-
State tennis players Eli Grossman and Preet Rajpal; and varsity track state qualifiers Jonathan DiSiena, Jonathan Louie, Scott Mansouri, Michael Stanco and Peter Zimbalist. Teams honored were the varsity and junior varsity girls lacrosse team, each of which won the Sportsmanship Award; and the varsity boys tennis team, which won the Long Island and County Championship –the latter
for the third consecutive year while amassing a 52-0 record in that time while also winning the Team GPA Award this season. Prior to the meeting, each team present was congratulated by the board of education. During the meeting, athletes were called to the stage for recognition by the community members in attendance.
Performing for Local Seniors As in prior years, the string ensemble from Village Elementary School in Syosset performed for residents of The Arbors Assisted Living in Jericho prior to the end of the school year. Students opened with the national anthem and continued with a variety of patriotic songs,
show tunes and classical arrangements. Many of the residents who are military veterans showed their appreciation for the patriotic selections. “It’s miraculous, the way these youngsters play,” said one Arbors resident. Following the concert, students mingled, chatted and played games
with the residents and visited the facility’s koi pond. “It was a wonderful, multigenerational experience for everyone,” said Village string teacher Linda Carrella, who directed the performance and promised the students would return again next year to perform.

These outstanding scholars were elected for the prestigious honor based on their superior academic achievement, dedicated community service and the enthusiastic endorsement of their teachers. The inductees are Audio Production student Angeline LaMonica, Police Science and Criminal Justice student Eric Henehan, Computer Game Design and Programming student Ryan Morano, and Physical Therapy Aide students Samantha Zizzo and Veronica Scruggs.
“These students have honed their talents and followed their passions to earn this honorable induction,” said Gene Silverman, Executive Director of Nassau BOCES Department of Regional Schools and Instructional Programs. “They are the future of our society and economy; they are our hope for a better world.” Membership in the NTHS is the nation’s highest award for excellence in career and technical education. These students have consistently distinguished themselves by exemplifying exceptional qualities, such as honesty, leadership, responsibility and good character, and by serving
as models of the NTHS vision, “success favors the prepared mind.” Recognized by business, industry and education as the paragon of student achievement and leadership, the NTHS helps top students find success in today’s highly competitive workplace by encouraging scholastic achievement and cultivating a desire for personal excellence. NTHS members are awarded personal letters of recommendation for employment, college admission and scholarships, and have their diplomas and training certificates stamped with the official NTHS seal.
New Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently hosted “Shootout for Soldiers” a 24-Hour Lacrosse Game Benefit at the Town of Oyster Bay’s Field of Dreams. The Shootout for Soldiers is an annual 24 hour lacrosse event that benefits veterans and active duty military personnel. Supervisor Saladino stated, “Shootout for Soldiers is a terrific game that provides local lacrosse players a chance to enjoy a sport
they love in a unique way while also raising funds to benefit the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces.” The charitable funds raised at Shootout for Soldiers will benefit the Semper Fi Fund, the Ranger Lead the Way Fund, the Gary Sinise Foundation and the Joseph J. Theinert Memorial Fund. This year, approximately $127,000 was raised in support of organizations that benefit our troops. In addition,
the Long Island Air Force Association conducted a special ceremony to honor Vietnam veterans and present them with medals that commemorate their service in the conflict. Supervisor Saladino was joined by members of the All Veterans Group, a group of active and retired military members, who use parachute demonstrations and skydiving to promote patriotism and veteran issues.

ROCKIN’ THE PARADISE - Several local legislators recently attended the “Music Under the Stars” performance of Rockin’ The Paradise, a Styx tribute band, held at John J. Burns Town Park. Supervisor Joe Saladino thanked the entertainers for a wonderful performance.

Awards were presented at the end of the competition, which was attended by students, parents and educators as well as media. Following the awards, teams attended a reception sponsored by Stony Brook University and later toured the University’s engineering labs. According to Dr. Loren Skeist, President of Spellman High Voltage Electronics, which was Lead Sponsor of this year’s competition, “Spellman was honored to be able to sponsor this year’s Clean Tech Competition which challenged teams of high school students to develop innovative solutions that reduce waste streams and carbon emissions of buildings, along with the occurrence of ‘sick building syndrome.’” Before the competition, students visited Spellman High Voltage Electonics to see how science and technology are part of the product research, development and production process. “The projects that the teams presented demonstrated their ingenuity, creativity and knowledge of science and were truly inspiring. The enthusiasm and comradery was very present, with all of the students interacting and demonstrating their projects for each other. To be competitive, our nation needs more students like these young competitors to gain interest in science and technology,” said Dr. Ray Ann Havasy, Director of The Center for Science Teaching & Learning. This is the sixth year that CSTL has managed the competition. This year’s entries included 742 students from 330 teams from 26 different countries. Teams of high school students from across the nation and around the world recently showcased their awardwinning projects and solutions at the 2017 Spellman High Voltage Electronics Clean Tech Competition. The theme of the competition, held for the first time this year on Long Island and at Stony Brook University, was “Creating a Greener Future.” The nine finalist teams that traveled to Long Island presented their STEM-based solutions and projects for mitigating environmental challenges. The winners of the competition were selected after several rounds of judging. Winners of the competition received monetary awards totaling $30,000. Plainview-Old Bethpage JFK High School Team “Super Silk” won First Place and $10,000. Team members Mses. Alyssa Iryami’s and Audrey Shine’s project was titled: Utilization of Bombyx mori in the Production of Polymeric Graphene Enhanced Supersilk. The students fed graphene to silkworms and demonstrated that the naturally produced silk was strengthened. They proved that the stronger naturally made silk could be used in many ways including making water filters. “We were honored to be selected to be in the top 10 and win first place. It was an amazing day, just learning what all these young people have innovated,” said Iryami of team Super Silk. “Meeting people from the Philippines and Singapore has been amazing. It has been such a journey and a long year since September and we cannot believe we came this far,” added Shine of team Super Silk. The First Place team will have the opportunity to continue its relationship with a professional mentor, who will advise and assist the team in furthering its work and education. The winning team will also work with the United States Patent Office to get their idea into the real world. A Second Place award of $7,000 was presented to team “Philippine Science High School-Main Campus” in

King Kullen and its full-service natural food marketplace, Wild by Nature, recently helped raise funds to benefit three organizations providing services to children with disabilities. The annual “Brighter Future for Children with Disabilities” campaign encouraged customers to donate at the check-out counter, with King Kullen rounding the amount raised to $9,000 to be
divided equally among The Viscardi Center and the Nassau County and Suffolk County Chapters of AHRC. King Kullen CoPresidents Brian C. Cullen and J. Pipeline Program
Twenty high achieving public school students who are interested in pursuing a career in health care, visited the Nassau University Medical Center along with their coordinator. The minority high school students are part of the Hofstra/Northwell School of Medicine Medical
Scholars Pipeline Program, a special program for those exploring careers in medicine. The students were introduced to the various health careers in NUMC, A. Holly Patterson Extended Care Facility and the five LI Federally Qualified Health Centers by Kent Kessler, director of HR for
NuHealth/NUMC. During the afternoon, the students also had an opportunity to meet Dr. Zeltser and find out about the cardiology program at NUMC and to hear about the physicians’ experiences while in medical school and during their residencies and fellowships.
