Covid-19 And Pets As of late-March 2020, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention did not see any reason to believe that animals, including pets, might be a source of infection for the COVID-19 virus. In addition, at that time the CDC had not received any reports of pets or other animals getting sick with the virus in the United States. While it’s unlikely that pets or other animals would pass the COVID-19 virus to humans, it’s important to note that animals can spread diseases to people, which only emphasizes the importance of practicing healthy habits around pets and other animals. Washing hands after handling or being around animals or their waste, food or supplies is one simple

preventive measure that can safeguard humans from diseases transmitted by pets.

Properly cleaning up after animals is another simple way to reduce the risk of diseases being transmitted by pets. The CDC advises cat owners to scoop cat litter daily and change it at least twice per week. Pregnant women should never clean cat litter. Dog waste should be promptly removed from private and public spaces. When cleaning cages, habitat and pet supplies, do so outside the home to avoid contaminating interior surfaces. When that’s not possible, clean such materials in a laundry room sink or bathtub rather than the kitchen sink.

New York Cancer & Blood Specialists Become the First Community Cancer Center to Initiate and Administer Lu-177 Therapy (Lutathera) in New York State New York Cancer & Blood Specialists (NYCBS) recently announced that it is the first community practice in New York State to administer Lu177 therapy (Lutathera): the first radioactive drug approved for targeted treatment for patients with neuroendocrine tumors (NETs).

NETs form in cells that interact with the nervous system or in glands that produce hormones. These cells, called neuroendocrine cells, can be found throughout the body, but NETs are most often found in the abdomen, especially in the gastrointestinal tract.

Lu-177 therapy provides patients with certain cancerous NETs with a new treatment option which will positively impact healthcare by reducing morbidity and mortality associated with cancers.

Mostly available in academic hospitals, Lu177 therapy provides an accessory treatment option for patients with NETs and can be considered in metastatic neuroendocrine cancers earlier in treatment. This

advancement provides a new alternative for patients who don’t respond to other treatments.

The drug consists of a radioactive isotope, Lu-177, attached to dotatate- a molecule that binds to GEP-NET cells that have a molecule called a somatostatin receptor on their surface. The drug then enters these somatostatin receptor-positive tumor cells, and radiation emitted

by Lu-177 helps to kill the cells.

“Lu-177 therapy is only the cusp of the burgeoning theranostics field where we will be able to bring stateof-the-art personalized therapies to our patients across Long Island and beyond to improve their underlying clinical condition and quality of life,” Tony Abraham, DO, MPA, Director of PET/ CT and Theranostics said. “In addition, we are glad to provide our oncologists and referring gastroenterologists with an additional armament in the therapy options available to them to fight and conquer cancer.”

Most NET patients have tumors that express

somatostatin receptors and NYCBS uses an FDA approved diagnostic imaging method that uses dotatate tagged with a different radioactive element, gallium-68, to locate positive tumors using PET imaging services.

One Night Only Streaming Event of Disney’s The Little Mermaid The community is invited to view a one night only streaming event of Syosset High School’s performance of Disney’s The Little Mermaid on Thursday, July 30th at 7 p.m.

This past spring, restrictions related to COVID-19 necessitated the cancellation of the production of The Little Mermaid after students and staff worked so hard to put together an outstanding performance. The cast, crew and orchestra had the opportunity to perform on what would have been opening night for a

Help This U.S. Soldier Overseas Bring His Two Previously Mistreated Dogs Back to the US There are parts of the world that sadly aren’t a safe place for dogs. So when American soldiers see some that have been abandoned or abused, they can’t help but to want to get involved. When they do, they form a bond with the dog, and can’t bear the thought of leaving them behind when it’s time to head back home.

A soldier has reached out to Guardians of Rescue, asking for help to get his two dogs back to the U.S. from overseas, so they can live out their life with him in peace.

“We understand how important it is that they are able to rescue these dogs for good and make them a permanent part of their family,” explains Robert Misseri, president of Guardians of Rescue, an animal rescue organization. “We absolutely want to help them, and know how to make it happen, but we have to have the financial backing of the public to pull it off.”

Chief Warrant Officer Anderson has been on a mission, serving overseas for his country. Now, his country is being asked to help him with his mission of bringing his two beloved dogs home with him. As he is scheduled to head back to America, the idea of leaving the dogs behind in a foreign country is weighing heavy on his heart. He swore to both dogs that they would never be abandoned and mistreated gain, and he’s

counting on Guardians of Rescue to help ensure it.

The two dogs, Moose and Sergeant Mimi Morale, were found by Anderson.

They were strays that were starving and had been mistreated. He rescued them, gave them the treatment they needed to nurse them back to health, named them, and then fell in love. Sergeant Mimi Morale got her name, because she has a special way of boosting the morale of everyone around, and putting a smile on everyone’s face. The two canine companions have been living in his tent and have become family.

“There’s nothing like the bond you can have with a dog, or with dogs in this case,” explained Chief Warrant Officer Anderson. “I love these dogs like family, and I can’t walk away and leave family behind over here. I will forever be grateful to be able to take them back to the U.S. so they can continue being a part of my family.”

While Guardians of Rescue has helped numerous soldiers be able to bring their adopted dogs back to the US from overseas, it’s a costly process. This July 4th, as we celebrate the nation’s independence, it would be extra special to honor those members who are on the front line securing it. Helping to bring back this soldiers dogs would be the ultimate reward, honoring why they serve in the military, which is

to protect life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

It’s estimated that to bring both dogs back will cost around $9,000. The only way they can ensure that the soldier’s dogs can be brought back is by raising the funds that it will take to do so. Equity First Foundation

Equity First Foundation (EFF) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization located here on Long Island. Rhonda Klch started this foundation with the mission to offer services, resources and programs to consumers and small businesses that are facing financial distress. Although the details of financial markets may not be necessary for everyone, a good understanding of everyday finances is needed to ensure your home, bank account and additional assets are protected as you go about your life.

This nonprofit is guided by a board of experts from the Long Island business community.

They strive to educate the community so people can make financial decisions with knowledge and confidence. EFF provides financial education, literacy and best practices at low or no cost to individuals and groups from primary school through retirement and including life events.

Rhonda Klch, Executive Director of the Equity First Foundation has taken all necessary steps to get out of her comfort zone and attack COVID with her resources. As a women entrepreneur, she used her relationships, social media and community to power through this current pandemic.

Although EFF has switched their programs from in person to virtual, they have been well received. They continue to offer free financial counseling and outreach resources for numerous families on Long Island.

The Equity First Foundation has three different types of programs that they offer: Educational Institution Program This program focuses on k-12, post secondary, and trade schools with student types comprised of all abilities including special needs and developmentally disabled.

It is offered as a workshop / assembly that can last for as short as 45 minutes to as long as a full day or mini series. Each program is uniquely designed to fit the educational facility after a comprehensive needs analysis.

Some sample topics that can be addressed are: career options by salary, understanding

money management, life skills, healthy financial choices, creating a budget, creating a savings account and more.

Community Outreach Program The Community Outreach Program focuses on independent facilities, partnering charities and nonprofits, community centers, libraries, career fairs, guest speakers, events and more for all demographics. These are offered in as short as 45 minutes to as long as a full day or mini series. Some sample topics are: first time home-buyer, understanding student loans, improving your credit, avoiding senior scams, understanding your retirement plan and more.

Corporate Awareness Program This program focuses on a lunch and learn structure for 10 or more employees.

Some sample topics are: paying off debt, understanding your 401K, saving for vacation, your family on a budget and benefits of good credit.
