Benefits Of Volunteering Volunteering is a great way for individuals to strengthen their communities, but it also can be a unique way for individuals to improve their own overall happiness. A 2020 study published in the Journal of Happiness Studies examined 70,000 participants, each of whom received

surveys that asked questions regarding their volunteering habits and mental health.The study found that, when compared to those who did not volunteer, people who had volunteered in the previous 12 months were more satisfied with their lives and gave their overall health higher ratings.

The frequency of giving back to one’s community also may affect just how much volunteering affects mental health.

Study participants who volunteered at least once per month rated their mental health even higher than those who volunteered but did so infrequently.

During the warmer months, water conservation is of the utmost importance and it is so valuable to have the younger generations grasping what it means to cut back on water use and how to do it.”

Each year, the winners of the poster contest are determined after deliberation from the Board of Commissioners on creativity, design, and overall message of water conservation. This year featured both electronic and in-person design submissions, which led the District to collect more than 300 submissions from students, shattering the previous record of 170 in 2017. The District hosted an award ceremony on June 16th to honor the three winners from each grade.

“The Plainview Water District strives to instill the importance of water conservation with our residents through our Preserve Plainview initiative,” said PWD Commissioner Andrew Bader. “This poster contest is an excellent way to educate our young community members on all of the simple, effective ways to make a big impact on saving our aquifers. Every single student who submitted a design should be very proud of themselves for their hard work, creativity, and their dedication to saving water.”

An annual tradition in the District, the poster contest is held in partnership with the Plainview Old Bethpage Central School District for students in grades 1 through 6. This poster contest is designed to be a fun activity that also provides an opportunity for students to learn about the importance of water conservation and our region’s sole-source aquifer.

“The Plainview Water District is extremely proud of the participation with this year’s contest and thanks the Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District for their continued support in this effort,” said PWD Chairman Marc Laykind.

Residents Invited to Bring Chairs, Coolers to Free ‘Music Under the Stars’ Summer Concert Series at TOBAY Beach Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board announced that residents are reminded to bring chairs and coolers to the Summer Concert Series at TOBAY Beach.

In accordance with new CDC guidelines, the concerts will no longer be held in a drive-in fashion and residents can set up seating areas in the lot at TOBAY. The ‘Movies by Moonlight’ series, held at

local parks on Wednesdays this summer, will also be hosted in a traditional manner, inviting residents and families to bring chairs, blankets and coolers to enjoy the show.

The 2021 summer

concert and movie series will feature a wide variety of genres ranging from country to rock, providing free family fun for all music lovers, as well as familyfriendly movie selections.

Admission is open to

Town residents beginning at 7 p.m. on a first-come, first-served basis, and residency will be verified upon admission. Most concerts begin at 8 p.m., and movies begin at dusk.

“Shootout for Soldiers” 24-Hour Charitable Lacrosse Game Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board will host the 7th Annual “Shootout for Soldiers” 24-Hour Lacrosse Benefit Game at the Town of Oyster Bay’s Field of Dreams, located on Old Sunrise Highway in Massapequa. This year’s round-the-clock event begins on the morning of July 22nd at 9am and continues non-stop for 24 hours until July 23rd at 9am. The event benefits veterans and active duty military personnel. The Long Island Air Force Association will conduct a special ceremony on July 22nd at 5:00 pm to honor Vietnam veterans and present them with medals that commemorate their

service in the conflict.

Adding to the spectacle, will be a parachute landing on the field conducted by the “All Veterans Group,” which will deliver the official ball.

Supervisor Saladino stated, “Shootout for Soldiers is a terrific game that provides local lacrosse players a chance to enjoy a sport they love in a unique way while also raising charitable funds to support the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces. Whether you enjoy lacrosse or are just looking for a fun-family event, I invite residents to be a part of the festivities.”

The charitable funds raised at Shootout for Soldiers will benefit the Army Ranger Lead the Way

Fund, the Long Island Air Force Association, Team Red White and Blue and the Joseph J. Theinert Memorial Fund.

The event features 24 continuous 1-hour sessions.

The score is cumulative, resulting in unique scores for a lacrosse game with totals reaching into the hundreds.

Participants include children, adults, seniors, youth, high school, college players and veterans.

Teams that accommodate players with special needs are also scheduled to play.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino joined with Councilman Lou Imbroto, Councilman Tom Hand and Town Clerk Rich LaMarca to celebrate the official start to summer in the Town of Oyster Bay. All Town pools, including S y o s s e t - Wo o d b u r y, Bethpage, Plainview-Old Bethpage, Marjorie Post in Massapequa and the saltwater pool at Tappen Beach are officially open.

“Our Town pools and beaches have become a backyard oasis for residents of all ages, which is why we’ve made many great enhancements over the past few years,” said Supervisor Saladino.

“From sunshades and

umbrellas to new benches and lounge chairs, we have what any family needs to enjoy their staycation right near home.”

The Supervisor added that the Town will once again offer free sunscreen at all pool facilities, as well as at Town beaches, courtesy of Northwell Health. Pool admission is limited to Town residents, however non-resident guests are permitted with a resident. All pools are open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, and until 8 p.m. on Fridays. Special extended hours until 8 p.m. are available one day a week at all facilities.

“We want all our residents to have a fun and enjoyable summer, and we

recognize that continued safety is an important aspect of that,” said Councilman Imbroto. “We will continue our extensive cleaning efforts at all facilities and the following of all CDC and Health Department Guidelines.

Most of all, we want to make sure our residents have fun this summer!”

Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Michele Johnson announced the Town’s S.T.O.P. (Stop Throwing Out Pollutants) and Homeowners Cleanup Days this summer, at the Town’s Solid Waste Disposal Complex. Residents can drop off materials at 101 Bethpage-Sweet Hollow Road in Old Bethpage, on the following dates and times: S.T.O.P. Program – 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Saturday, August 7th Homeowners Cleanup & Paper Shredding – 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“The summer months often bring with them opportunities for homeowners to clean out their homes and yards,” said Councilwoman Johnson. “Residents can bring both hazardous and non-hazardous materials to various programs we offer in the Town, helping to protect our environment and make cleanups more convenient.”

The Town’s S.T.O.P. program accepts various hazardous materials, such as gasoline, most pesticides, paint and batteries.

The Homeowners Cleanup program accepts nonhazardous waste,

including used tires, fence posts, clean broken concrete or yard waste.

Paper shredding services (up to four boxes) are also available during the Homeowners Cleanup to residents only, no businesses.

The Town’s S.T.O.P. and Homeowners programs are open to residents within the Town’s Solid Waste Disposal District.

Proof of residency is required.

Town Partners With Team Boomer To Host Shoe Collection Drive

Oyster Bay Town Councilman Tom Hand and the Town Board recently announced that the Town will partner with Team Boomer of the Boomer Esiason Foundation for Cystic Fibrosis to host a shoe collection drive.

Residents are invited to donate any type of shoe in good condition at one of the following DropOff Locations: Town Hall North (54 Audrey Ave, Oyster Bay), Town Hall South (977 Hicksville Road, Massapequa), the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center (1001 Stewart Ave, Bethpage), and the Hicksville Athletic Center (167 S. Broadway, Hicksville).

“The Boomer Esiason Foundation for Cystic

Fibrosis is responsible for lifesaving work in our community. Not only does the organization fund some of the most talented scientists and researchers, who every day come closer to finding a cure for cystic fibrosis, but they also provide critical resources and services for individuals currently living with Cystic Fibrosis,” said Councilman Hand. “All proceeds from this shoe collection drive will go directly to the foundation as they work toward their mission of heightening awareness, education and quality of life for those affected by cystic fibrosis, while also providing financial support to research aimed at finding a cure.”

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board announce the return of drive-in movies this summer at various Town facilities in July and August. The ‘Movies

by Moonlight’ series is once again limited to residents only on a first-come, firstserved basis.

“Residents and families looking for a fun night need look no further than their backyards this summer at the Town is ready with a

summer to remember,” said Supervisor Saladino. “We’re thrilled to once again enjoy family-friendly films from the comfort of your own vehicles at our local parks and beaches. Join us as these pop-up movie nights and sit back, relax and enjoy the show.”
