My Secret Life With all the fuss over this new film, “The Secret Life of Pets,” I thought it only appropriate to provide my own account of this socalled hidden existence we all allegedly cultivate when our humans are away. First off, (spoiler alert) I have never taken to the sewers or made my way to Brooklyn looking for adventure. No, my exploration is confined to the four corners of my aquatic kingdom, where I examine every leaf of my plant and inspect each piece of gravel daily; you know, just to see if anything has changed overnight. While my human feeds me twice a day, I must say the time between meals could be a bit closer. What she does for all those hours in between, I’ll never know. I’ve often thought

I would like to tag along, but the pet store told her I might be susceptible to something called “motion sickness” in the car. Since I can’t go along, I do my best to entertain her whenever she enters the room, in the hope that she might linger just a bit longer. I perform my tricks for her, everything from diving for flakes the moment she drops them in the tank to giving little “love pecks” on her finger when she even so much as touches the water. Sometimes it works, and she’ll stay and have her cereal while perched on the counter next to me; but most times, it’s just some nonsense about “running late” and “see you later Buddy.” The only quality time my human and I have is when she’s busy cooking.

Then, I have a front row seat to all the pretty preparation. Honestly, my life is fairly dull and repetitive, not exactly the stuff of fine cinema. Well, except for that one time with Squeegee the Snail – but I digress. Mostly, it’s a lot of laps and fanning my fins to see if they’ve grown back sufficiently (still a work in progress, but coming along nicely). Too bad I couldn’t tag along for the movie. Maybe I’ll catch it on TV when it comes around. Hope my human still has that portable bowl for me to travel in. I do miss sitting on the coffee table watching the ball game… and sitting on the dining room table watching everyone eat… Boy, I do a lot of watching, don’t I? Maybe they should make a movie about that.

For the third consecutive year, the Town of Oyster Bay will host the “Shootout for Soldiers” 24-Hour Lacrosse Game Benefit at the Town of Oyster Bay’s Field of Dreams, located on Old Sunrise Highway in Massapequa. This year’s round-the-clock event will begin on the morning of July 21st, at 9 a.m. and continue non-stop for 24 hours until July 22nd at 9 a.m. The event is held annually for the benefit of American Military personnel. Bowling Fundraiser a Success More than 300 bowlers and spectators packed Farmingdale Lanes in Farmingdale to raise more than $18,000 to benefit Adults and Children with Learning and Developmental Disabilities (ACLD). ACLD’s Bowling for an Enviable Life FUNdraiser brought individuals supported by ACLD together with members of the ACLD family, ACLD partners and members of the community to strike up some fun while helping ACLD pursue its mission of providing opportunities for children and adults with autism, learning and developmental disabilities to pursue enviable lives,

increase independence and foster supportive relationships within the community. “At its heart, ACLD is nothing without its people, whether they are the people we support or the people who help us pursue our mission,” said Robert C. Goldsmith, Executive Director of ACLD. “Having the chance to bring all of our people together made this an incredibly special afternoon, and we are grateful to all the bowlers and sponsors who made this event a striking success.” Nearly 300 bowlers participated in the April 17th event, and several dozen spectators came to

The event raises money for organizations that support United States Veterans as well as those currently in the U.S. Armed Forces. The beneficiaries of this year’s event include the Semper Fi Fund, the Ranger Lead the Way Fund, the Gary Sinise Foundation and the Joseph J. Theinert Memorial Fund. Last year, about $115,000 was raised in support of organizations that benefit veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces, bringing the total raised for the first two years of the event to about $200,000. The event is broken down into 24 continuous 1-hour sessions. Registered players and teams will be given jerseys and placed on either the Stars team or the Stripes team and matched against a team of similar ability. The score is cumulative resulting in unique scores

for a lacrosse game with totals reaching into the hundreds. During the first two years, the outcome of the games was not decided until the very end. Last year, the Stars defended their title with a victory of 282-274. In the first event, the Stars defeated the Stripes 214-210. Participants will include boys and girls, men and women, seniors, youth, high school and college players with each group taking the field for one hour. Teams that accommodate players with special needs are also scheduled to play. Among the highlighted matchups is a contest of teams of U.S. veterans beginning at 6 p.m. At 7 p.m., players from the Plainedge community will take the field in a session that honors fallen NYPD Detective Brian Moore. A matchup between the NYPD and the FDNY is scheduled to begin at 10 p.m. In total, 96 teams

Seventh and eighth grade students from PlainviewOld Bethpage School District’s Plainview-Old Bethpage Middle School were recently selected as winners of the Walt Whitman Birthplace Associations’ Thirteenth Annual Student Poetry Contest. Among the winners from Plainview-Old Bethpage Middle School were Gregory Kies, who

was selected as the Grand Champion for grades seven and eight, and Lauren Park, who was selected as the winner for grade eight. In addition, Gregor Reinbold’s eighth grade class won for its class anthology of poetry. For the content, the students were challenged to submit original poems based on Walt Whitman’s work entitled, A Child Went Forth. Students attended

an awards ceremony at the Walter Whitman House to celebrate their recognition with their teacher Gregor Reinbold. Participating in the prestigious poetry competition is one of the many ways the PlainviewOld Bethpage School District encourages students explore their creativity and to enjoy literature.

Guidance Dept Recognized The PlainviewOld Bethpage School District’s John F. Kennedy High School guidance department and Guidance Counselor Jason Miller were recently presented with the Nassau Counselors’ Association’s Exemplary Practice Award for their Sophomore College Tour. The field trip, which provided approximately 50

sophomore students an opportunity to visit several schools in the Boston area, was recognized for being innovative and easily adaptable for other schools to use within their own programs. The annual trip introduced the students to such colleges as Northeastern University, Boston College and Harvard University. The students

toured the campuses, met with admissions officers and participated in various academic and extracurricular activities during their stay. This innovative approach has helped bring awareness to the college search and application process to prepare high school sophomores for continuing their education after high school.

EXCELLENCE IN POETRY - Plainview-Old Bethpage Middle School students were recently recognized for their winning poetry submissions to the Walt Whitman Birthplace Association’s Thirteenth Annual Student Poetry contest. Teacher Gregor Reinbold and English Language arts (ELA) Chairperson Jeff Yagaloff joined students Greg Kies, Ryan Norris and Lauren Park at the award ceremony.

Paying Tribute and staff wore rainbow colors. Principal Ronelle Hershkowitz used the ceremony as a teachable moment, focusing on tolerance and acceptance. During the ceremony, Parkway students congregated around its

acclaimed Peace Pole and listened to Principal Hershkowitz emphasize the importance of inclusion and celebrating differences. Students concluded the ceremony by singing a song about peace.

GUIDANCE DEPT RECOGNIZED - Plainview-Old Bethpage School District Guidance Director Laurie Lynn and John F. Kennedy High School Guidance Counselor Jason Miller recently received Nassau Counselors’ Association’s Exemplary Practice Award. The entire high school guidance department was commended for their creative idea to take high school sophomores on a college tour.

The Bethpage Water District urges local residents to conserve water during the summer’s high temperatures and dry weather. Reducing water usage during the peak hours of 2 p.m. through 6 p.m., as well as following the odd-even regulations for lawn sprinkling, could make a significant impact to the water conservation efforts. “As the summer heat quickly approaches, we are asking that residents be conscious of their PAYING TRIBUTE - Students at Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District’s water use,” said Bethpage Parkway Elementary School wear rainbow to honor the victims of the Orlando, Florida Water Commissioner attacks. On Saturday, August 6th at 12 noon, The Museum of American Armor at Old Bethpage Village Restoration, 1303 Round Swamp Road in Old Bethpage, will honor America’s citizen soldiers who have served in the nation’s armor divisions by operating in the field a Cold War M48 Patton tank, a WW II Sherman tank, a Pacific theater Stuart tank, as well as half tracks and other tracked military vehicles. The program is made possible, in part,

through the support of PSEG. Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano is inviting the public as well as all veterans, families and friends to this unique event and looks forward to welcoming the families of veterans who served and many who were trained to either operate or maintain armored vehicles, trucks and other Army and Marine vehicles. Commencement Ceremony The Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District (POB) recently held its commencement ceremony for John F. Kennedy High School(JFK) School’s Class of 2016 at Long Island UniversityC.W. Post’s Tilles Center. More than 375 students gathered in graduation gowns and decorated caps to celebrate the completion of their high school careers. “We are unbelievably proud of the Class of 2016 and anxiously anticipate seeing all they accomplish in the years to come,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Lorna Lewis. “This year’s class should be commended for their dedication to their studies and their commitment to community service, athletics, the arts and all of the extracurricular programs available within our District. Congratulations to all of our graduating students.”

During the ceremony, Superintendent Dr. Lewis, Principal James Murray and Board of Education Trustee Emily Schulman addressed the graduating class with words of wisdom. JFK High School’s Class of 2016 valedictorian Michael Crawbuck, salutatorian Anna Vaynrub, senior class president Jamie Simon and schoolwide student government president Jason Kimmel reminisced and discussed the futures awaiting their fellow classmates during their speeches. The ceremony began with a performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner” by the senior choir. The choir was then joined by senior members from the school’s American Sign Language program for accompaniment, and the students signed along with the choir for one musical selection titled, “A Parting Blessing.” During the ceremony,

graduates and guests were treated to a violin performance by graduate Gyu Ri Lee. Gyu has received numerous accolades for her musical talent throughout her high school career, including earning recognition as concertmaster for the NAfME (National Association for Music Education) All-National Honors Orchestra, the Division 5 All-County Orchestra and the POBJFK High School Orchestra. She was the 2016 recipient of POB’s National School Orchestra Award, is an alumnus of the Mannes School of Music PreCollege Division in NYC, and has performed in Carnegie Hall as a winner of four international competitions. At the conclusion of the ceremony, students traditionally switched the position of their tassels and tossed their decorated caps into the air in celebration.

United Veterans Beacon House will host its 4th Annual Veterans Salute Gala on Thursday, October 27th, at Carlyle on the Green at Bethpage State Park; cocktail reception will begin at 6:30 p.m. This event brings together community leaders, elected officials, professionals and philanthropists to network while raising critical funds to help United Veterans Beacon House assist homeless veterans, veteran families and Long Islanders in crisis. spring, over 125 volunteer sales associates from offices across Long Island and Queens formed teams that spread across Beacon House’s housing sites and performed intensive house cleanups at seven sites for Coldwell Banker Annual Volunteer Day. Many of Coldwell Banker’s affiliated sales associates continue their relationship with the residence by providing holiday gifts and home cooked meals. This project is being followed by the commitment with an island-wide Hometown Heroes Linen Drive to collect 700 sets of new linens and bedding for homeless veterans living in Beacon House’s 34 sites.
