The End. {Part II} Approximately 5 hours later…

Finally, the end was upon us, the grand lighthouse on the hill. Having missed the hours of operation due to our detours en route to Montauk Point, we didn’t have the opportunity to browse the gift shop or climb the tower this time around, although our prior experience with the latter had been, shall we say, less than impressive.

While the Fire Island Lighthouse boasts a circular terrace to walk around the top and enjoy the scenic views below, Montauk has more of a ladder jutting up through a small hole in the ceiling, where, if you’re lucky, you can climb two steps - not even to the top - and poke your head out for a split second. Not exactly a full-service “tour,” to be sure.

Far more exciting are the rocks surrounding the base of the building, providing picturesque views of the Atlantic Ocean as its waves crash along the shoreline.

On any given day, you can find tons of people carefully navigating the giant boulders as they make

their way from one side to another.

Children, pets, senior citizens… all seem drawn to this spot.

From there, we took a drive to several of the private beaches to scope out a nice sunset view.

Navy Beach, Outer Beach… all were dotted with signs indicating the fines due if you dared park without the prestigious East Hampton town beach pass. How strictly was this rule enforced after dusk? We didn’t know; but, as the sun began to reach its golden hour, we decided it was worth the risk. And so, we found a rock wall to perch on overlooking the water, and we waited (one eye on the parking lot at all times, of course).

Once the last rays had dissipated, we headed into town, the town which had been practically closed down during the last of our pilgrimages.

What a difference the summer season makes. Restaurant after restaurant, outdoor patios bustling with music and people enjoying cocktails, stores filled with novelty items and “beachy” merchandise, a summertime

As the clock ticked to approximately 10 p.m., we of course decided we were slightly hungry once again, and in need of just a small snack for the road.

After eventually being seated at one of the aforementioned outdoor patios, we settled in to people watch. Little did we know that the most fascinating spectacle would be surrounding our very own table.

On the one side, a young woman argued vehemently with the manager over her credit card charge, demanding it be reversed immediately. On the other, a family with several children was finishing up their meal, when I heard the unmistakeable commotion of a child getting sick, right in the leftovers bag. His darling siblings gathered ‘round to witness the spectacle, while the parents, seemingly unaffected by this, remained calmly seated at the table, finishing their cocktails.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, was The End of The End for us for that evening. ’Til next time.

Honor Flight Long Island flights. They’re still taking WWII veterans of course!

They also post photos and videos from each flight and let you know when the next flight is scheduled on the website. They try to make it easy to use, particularly the donations pages! Help yourself to the photos. They’re free to download. Copy as many as you’d like for yourself or

friends and family.

The May 6th Honor Flight had 20 WWII veterans and 30 Korean veterans on board. Those photos and videos are available now on the HFLI website. The Reunion for those May 6th veterans, their guardians, friends and family members is being hosted by the American Airpower Museum on Saturday,

August 5th, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The reunion announcement and details for that event were sent to those participants.

The next Honor Flight is scheduled on September 23rd. Eligible veterans will receive the flight information very soon.

They have a waiting list, mostly Korean veterans, but they will certainly

make room for any WWII veterans who want to go.

Don’t be deterred by application fees. Stanford University’s application fee for 2017 was $90, making the school one of the more expensive colleges or universities to apply to. But many schools, including Stanford, waive those fees for certain applicants.

Students should not expect each school to waive their application fees, but they also should not let those fees deter them from applying, especially if they meet or exceed the application requirements.

Choosing where to apply to college is a big decision that can affect the lives of young students for years to come. The college application process can have more immediate impacts as well, as U.S. News reported that the average college application fee was $41 in the spring of 2015, meaning families can expect to spend several hundred dollars just to apply to colleges.

The rising cost of a college education coupled with a competitive job market only serve to emphasize the importance high school students and their families must place on deciding where to apply. The following are a handful of strategies families can employ to make students’ decisions regarding where to apply to college a little easier.

Don’t hesitate from applying to a dream school. The Princeton Review defines dream schools as those colleges or universities where a student’s academic credentials fall in the low end or below the school’s averages for students accepted the year prior. But even students who meet the academic requirements established by their dream schools may be hesitant to apply to such schools because of the cost of tuition. Students whose academic records fall just short of their dream schools’ criteria or whose financial means make attending their dream schools seem impossible should still apply to those schools. Financial aid might be available, and schools might look at more than just academic performance, particularly for students whose grades

According to BusBoss, a school bus routing and tracking company, it’s important for parents to know where registered sex offenders live and ensure kids avoid these homes on the way to the bus stop.

Drive cautiously during school hours. Drivers should exercise extra caution and reduce speeds when schools are opening and closing. There will be many students on the roads between 8 and 9 a.m. and again between 2 and 4 p.m.

NHTSA advises getting to the bus stop at least five minutes before the bus is scheduled to arrive.

Stand at a safe distance.

Children should remain no less than six feet away from the curb or roadway while waiting for the bus to arrive. Parents should routinely remind students not to run and play at the bus stop.

Lobby for safe bus stop locations. District transportation directors are often tasked with choosing school bus stop locations based on local policies and attendance.

Only basic requirements may be addressed, such as distance between stops.

Parents and community members might be able to offer feedback regarding roads with low traffic volume and spots that offer maximum visibility during all seasons.

Minimize street crossings. Parents can drop children off on the side of the road where the bus will stop so the kids do not have to cross roadways unattended.

School buses are safe modes of transportation for children. Statistics from Transport Canada indicate that transportation by school bus is safer than by passenger car. School buses are large and heavy vehicles that protect riders during collisions.

School buses also help keep a greater number of passenger vehicles off of the roads during hightraffic school times.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that each year approximately 450,000 public school buses transport 23.5 million children to and from school and schoolrelated activities around the United States. Although safety is enforced while students are on the bus, it is also vital for students to remain safe before they board. Ensuring a safe bus stop requires diligence.

Safety starts with students and parents.

Students are under the authority of the bus driver while they are on the bus.

But before they board the bus, students typically are not supervised.

Chaperoned bus stops can help deter rowdy actions, particularly at crowded bus stops. Parents can rotate standing watch and keeping tabs on bus stop

Going Above and Beyond Teachers provide many things to their students. In addition to an education, support and guidance, many teachers also feel compelled to enhance their classrooms with supplies they’ve purchased out-ofpocket.

According to a poll of 1,500 teachers conducted by the educational resource Edutopia, 93 percent of teachers feel obligated or somewhat obligated to buy school supplies for their

classrooms with their own money. The Education Market Association says that virtually all teachers wind up paying out of pocket for supplies. The amounts spent annually can be upwards of $1,000 per teacher. In addition, not all of the teachers funding supplies work in low-income districts.

A report published in early 2016 by the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities found that

many states now provide less financial support per student than they did before the recession took hold roughly nine years ago. Districts forced to work under tight budgets are increasingly outsourcing the costs of supplies to parents. When parents fail to provide supplies, teachers are bearing the brunt of the costs to avoid seeing their students go without necessary resources.

Reorganization Meeting On July 5th, the Hicksville Public School District Board of Education held its annual reorganization meeting, during which new board trustees Christopher

Amato and Sunita Manjrekar were welcomed.

Phil Heckler and Brenda Judson were reelected president and vice president, respectively, and Carla Hoene was

appointed secretary.

All board members and Superintendent of Schools Dr. Carl Bonuso were then administered their oaths of office.

CSD Honors Service The Syosset CSD recently honored four silver anniversary staff members (with 25 years of district service) and 17 retirees for the 2016-2017 school year during the annual District Reception held in the Syosset High School auxiliary gymnasium.

A close colleague of each honoree shared kind words regarding their years of outstanding service and dedication to the children of Syosset. Introductions were followed by a certificate presentation by a member of the board of education.

This year’s group of honorees included educators and support personnel, with the largest representation of retirees from Harry B.

Thompson Middle School.

Appropriately, Principal James Kassebaum gave the most tributes and prior to introducing his last retiring staff member joked, “We are clearing out the building.”

Camardi. Dr. Rogers called it a “wonderful metaphor” for the evening, as it met all of the criteria as a tribute, celebration and show of admiration, also noting that every advertising design student who submitted a program for consideration treated the task with professionalism, a characteristic indicative of the staff being honored.

“When you do your work well as an educator, it goes far beyond the four walls of the school,” said Deputy Superintendent and master of ceremonies Adele Bovard. “You have truly impacted generations of this community for good as they have passed through the schoolhouse.

Town Amnesty Program The Town of Oyster Bay has extended its innovative and wildly successful building permit amnesty initiative designed to allow residents to obtain the necessary permits required on building improvements previously done to their homes, without incurring stringent penalties, Oyster Bay Town Councilman Thomas P. Hand announced. The program has been extended through December 31st, 2017.

“The runaway success of this program has been the catalyst behind offering this extension to our residents through the end of the year,” Councilman Hand said. “During the next several months, residents with these existing improvements will be able to simply follow the normal application and inspection procedure. The standard fees will cover

the entire process. All residential homeowners are eligible, including landlords of residential rental properties.”

Councilman Hand went on to note that the amnesty program addresses both public safety concerns and homeowner convenience.

“The Town requires building permits on home improvements because the work needs to done in accordance to standards and codes,” Councilman Hand said.

“These standards ensure that construction on your home meets workmanship and safety requirements. The building permit process is not the time to cut corners.

Quality workmanship that meets legal building codes is a wise investment, creates peace of mind and ultimately saves time and money down the road.

This will be especially

important when a resident needs to sell or refinance their home and they do not have the proper approvals.”

To begin the process for a building permit, residents can call the Town of Oyster Bay’s Department of Planning and Development’s Building Division at 516.624.6200, where you will be directed through the process.

They can also visit the building department at Town Hall North in Oyster Bay (74 Audrey Avenue) or its newly designated location at Town Hall South in Massapequa (977 Hicksville Road). The new location makes it equally convenient for both north and south shore residents.

Going Green at School Eco-conscious lifestyles may have transformed the ways people behave at home or on the job, but many schools have taken a little longer to embrace eco-friendly practices.

But that doesn’t have to continue, as younger generations of students are growing up green and ready to embrace some green strategies in the

classroom.

One of the easiest steps to take is to reduce paper usage. According to Edutopia, a K-12 learning and education resource, the average school uses approximately 250,000 pieces of paper per school year. This estimate is based on an average of 50 reams of paper per teacher at a 100-teacher school.

Instead of relying so heavily on paper, students can take notes on laptops or tablets while teachers can rely on smartboards and notebooks for classroom lessons. When paper must be used, make a concentrated effort to discard it in designated recycling bins in each classroom.

Pink Aid Grant The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Program is the recipient of a grant from the Pink AidLI Chapter.

This grant helps fund the salary of a bilingual social worker who provides counseling, patient navigation and support services at Nassau University Medical Center and the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program to uninsured and underinsured Nassau and Suffolk County patients diagnosed with breast cancer.

The grant also allows the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program to support non-medical emergent needs for uninsured or underinsured Nassau and Suffolk County patients

and their families while undergoing treatment and/or post-operative care for breast cancer.

These services include transportation to and from treatment, wigs and other prosthesis, grocery cards and assistance with household bills.

“Pink Aid is proud to support the important assistance offered by Adelphi’s Breast Cancer Program and the bilingual social work and navigation services they provide. We are so pleased that our funding will allow critical support to reach even more women on Long Island,” says Ali Mitchell, the president of Pink Aid Long Island.
