Virtual Thyroid Cancer Support Group ThyCa Long Island, a support group for thyroid cancer survivors will be holding a free virtual meeting on the Zoom platform on Sunday, July 11 from 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM. SALADINO, HAND, AND LAMARCA PARTNER WITH NEW YORK BLOOD CENTER - To help hospitals meet the ongoing and pressing need for blood, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, Councilman Tom Hand, and Town Clerk Rich LaMarca partnered with New York Blood Center to host a Blood Collection Drive recently at the Hicksville Athletic Center. The donation drive was held in conjunction with the NY Blood Center, and 44 pints of blood were collected at this Collection Drive.

A single pint of blood can save up to three lives, so donations from this blood drive will potentially save up to 132 lives.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently announced a variety of free weekday senior citizens summer activities offered by the Department of Community and Youth Services (CYS) in community centers and parks throughout the Town.

Book Club, music, bingo, aquatic classes, and tai chi are just some of the activities seniors can enjoy as part of this year’s program, which runs through September 3rd.

“I invite our senior residents to participate in these free activities, where they can enjoy the company of others, make new friends, and stay active and engaged during the dog days of summer,” Supervisor Saladino said. “Our senior summer activities are some of the most popular programs the Town offers, and I expect this year to be no different with the expansive and diverse activities that will be offered!”

Blue Umbrella Experience (BUE) is a local nonprofit organization that offers a variety of interactive and engaging community classes for youth, young adults and individuals through their Above and Beyond Community Class initiative. Their goal is that students will enjoy learning while also connecting with others. The importance of community should never be overlooked, and Blue Umbrella Experience definitely understands that!

The classes that this nonprofit offer either take place at their new location, which is 150 Motor Parkway, Suite 11, Hauppauge, NY 11788 or online! Some classes they offer are: Yoga, Martial Arts, Acting and Improv, Music Appreciation, Art, Digital Design and Technology, World Cultures, History of Walt Disney, Languages and Humanities, Personal Development, Finances and Math for everyday use, Communications, Animals & Nature and Cooking for all abilities and all levels.

“We know we are our best selves when we have that safe space to feel accepted in, to help give us courage to try new things and practice using our voices to comfortably advocate for ourselves. We started our nonprofit Blue Umbrella Experience, Inc last June with the hope of thoughtfully and skillfully helping youth, young adults and individuals of all abilities to grow by learning, connecting and belonging during the pandemic and beyond,” says Executive Director Christine Hawkins. “We honestly could not bear the thought that individuals might otherwise face even more isolation, adversity and less options. We have been blessed with a team of instructors that have professional teaching experience in a Comprehensive

Transition Program and first and foremost, a love of supporting positive growth in their students; and so, through our Above and Beyond Community Class initiative, BUE’s community has grown to an incredible group of over 80 individuals from all over and ranging in age from 14 into their thirties.”

Since September, this nonprofit has had 100% retention and everyday their BUE community continues to expand, while keeping their interactive classes small and personalized for optimum learning.

To nurture the incredibly important sense of belonging, they also make sure they incorporate free lunch meetings, a weekly wrap up community meeting, as well as social events to integrate learning and help students nurture their bonds with each other.

Students and professionals are always welcome to visit their new location to see what its all about! Additionally, if you are looking to get involved with BUE, they welcome professionals that have teaching experience and a lot of heart to reach out and propose classes that they can run that will support skillbuilding and increase quality of life for others. Also, if you would like to volunteer your time to help fulfill their mission, you can! Lastly, donations are always appreciated.

TLCcompanions.com ‘Music Under the Stars’ Summer Concert Series at TOBAY Beach Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board announced that residents are reminded to bring chairs and coolers to the Summer Concert Series at TOBAY Beach.

In accordance with new CDC guidelines, the concerts will no longer be held in a drive-in fashion and residents can set up seating areas in the lot at TOBAY. The ‘Movies by Moonlight’ series, held at

local parks on Wednesdays this summer, will also be hosted in a traditional manner, inviting residents and families to bring chairs, blankets and coolers to enjoy the show.

The 2021 summer

concert and movie series will feature a wide variety of genres ranging from country to rock, providing free family fun for all music lovers, as well as familyfriendly movie selections.

Admission is open to

Town residents beginning at 7 p.m. on a first-come, first-served basis, and residency will be verified upon admission. Most concerts begin at 8 p.m., and movies begin at dusk.

The Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District recently hosted a commencement ceremony for the 2021 graduating class of Plainview-Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy High School at Hofstra University. Saladino: Federal Funds Available To Help Residents With Rent Payments, Utility Arrears & Security Deposits To assist Town of Oyster Bay renters facing economic hardships, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board recently announced the availability of $16 million in Federal funds for those facing housing insecurity as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Although this rental assistance program is being administered by the Long Island Housing Partnership (LIHP), qualifying residents can now register at www. oysterbaytown.com/ rentalassistance.

After registration, the LIHP will contact applicants to

obtain documentation and information necessary to secure these funds.

Supervisor Saladino stated, “These Federal funds were granted to the Town of Oyster Bay to help residents recover from economic hardships created by the pandemic and government shutdowns. This rental assistance program provides critical funding to prevent homelessness and ensure those experiencing financial hardship are able to recover and rebuild their lives while having a stable place to call home.”

The program is designed to assist residents with

current and prospective rent, arrears for utilities and home energy costs, and other expenses related to housing such as rental security deposits.

Assistance under this program could be provided for up to 12 months of payments, with an additional 3 months if necessary to ensure housing stability, and will cover arrears and costs accrued on or after March 13, 2020. Assistance is available on a firstcome, first-served basis until Federal funds have been exhausted. Eligible residents must be able to answer yes to the following

Autism And Children

According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas.

Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function.

Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed four times as often in boys than it is in girls.

Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of

That’s twice as great as the rate in 2004, when the CDC reported one in 125 children were diagnosed with autism.

Congratulations to the H.B. Thompson Class of 2021!

On June 25, H.B. Thompson eighth grade students officially became Syosset High School students during two moving up ceremonies held at the Syosset track and field.

The ceremonies kicked off with a performance of the Star Spangled Banner by the HBT Chamber Winds and the Pledge of Allegiance, after which Assistant Principals Jemal Graham and Christian Harrigan welcomed students, Board of Education members, district administration and an audience of family and friends.

Principal Kevin Bonanno addressed the students and remarked on their accomplishments and the strong character they displayed as HBT students.

“It would have been easy for many of you to forget to be kind with all of the challenges around, but you haven’t. You have treated each other and all of us with kindness and respect throughout your three years and especially this year.”

Principal Bonanno also commended the recipients of the Presidential Award for Educational Excellence, the Presidential Award for

Educational Achievement and the HBT Community Service Awards.

Students then received their certificates from HBT Administrators and Guidance Counselors and teachers.

At the conclusion of the ceremony, certificates in hand and proud smiles illuminating their faces, the newly minted Syosset High School freshmen exited the ceremony while a recorded performance of “Pomp and Circumstance” by the HBT Chamber Orchestra played in the background.

Hazardous Material & Homeowners Cleanup Days Scheduled for July & August Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Michele Johnson announced the Town’s S.T.O.P. (Stop Throwing Out Pollutants) and Homeowners Cleanup Days this summer, at the Town’s Solid Waste Disposal Complex.

Residents can drop off materials at 101 BethpageSweet Hollow Road in Old Bethpage, on the following dates and times: S.T.O.P. Program – 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Saturday, July 10th Saturday, August 7th Homeowners Cleanup & Paper Shredding – 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Saturday, July 17th

Saturday, August 14th “The summer months often bring with them opportunities for homeowners to clean out their homes and yards,” said Councilwoman Johnson. “Residents can bring both hazardous and non-hazardous materials to various programs we offer in the Town, helping to protect our environment and make cleanups more convenient.”

The Town’s S.T.O.P. program accepts various hazardous materials, such as gasoline, most pesticides, paint and batteries. The Homeowners Cleanup program accepts

non-hazardous waste, including used tires, fence posts, clean broken concrete or yard waste.

Paper shredding services (up to four boxes) are also available during the Homeowners Cleanup to residents only, no businesses.

The Town’s S.T.O.P. and Homeowners programs are open to residents within the Town’s Solid Waste Disposal District. Proof of residency is required.

External Diploma Program The External Diploma Program offers adults 21 and over, the opportunity to receive credit for their life experiences, and earn a high school equivalency without the H.B. Benefits Of Volunteering Volunteering is a great way for individuals to strengthen their communities, but it also can be a unique way for individuals to improve their own overall happiness. A 2020 study published in the Journal of Happiness Studies examined 70,000 participants, each of whom received

surveys that asked questions regarding their volunteering habits and mental health.The study found that, when compared to those who did not volunteer, people who had volunteered in the previous 12 months were more satisfied with their lives and gave their overall health higher ratings.

The frequency of giving back to one’s community also may affect just how much volunteering affects mental health.

Study participants who volunteered at least once per month rated their mental health even higher than those who volunteered but did so infrequently.

RIBBON CUTTING CEREMONY - On June 23, 2021, the Adventureland family celebrated the Grand Reopening of Adventureland with a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony. Adventureland opened in 1962 and has been serving Long Island for over 59 years. The park offers both season and day passes that can be purchased online or at the park. This year’s hot NEW ride is the Sports Tower with over 30 additional rides at the park. It is easily located on Route 110 in Farmingdale. WOMAN OF DISTINCTION - Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board recently took the opportunity at a Town Board meeting to recognize Bethpage resident Lauren Fiumara, an exceptional women who was named as one of the Town’s “Women of Distinction” this year, but was unfortunately unable to attend the ceremony the evening it was held. Lauren is a nurse manager at LIJ at Northwell Health where she manages a psych/telemetry/post-op unit that was converted into a COVID Unit in March 2020. Since the onset of the pandemic, Lauren has spearheaded the hospital’s COVID response on the frontlines. Her dedication to the well-being of patients, as well as her staff, has demonstrated her true selfless nature. On top of her courageous actions during the pandemic, Lauren has organized clothing drives among the staff of the hospital, helping patients in need upon their discharge from the hospital. Supervisor Saladino and the Town Board are pleased to have had the opportunity to recognize Lauren Fiumara as a 2021 Woman of Distinction.
