Equity First Foundation (EFF) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization located here on Long Island. Rhonda Klch started this foundation with the mission to offer services, resources and programs to consumers and small businesses that are facing financial distress. Although the details of financial markets may not be necessary for everyone, a good understanding of everyday finances is needed to ensure your home, bank account and additional assets are protected as you go about your life.

Edward Henry of Strathmore bagels and a few sponsors, to give-away over 300 breakfasts to families in need.

This nonprofit is guided by a board of experts from the Long Island business community. They strive to educate the community so people can make financial decisions with knowledge and confidence. EFF provides financial education, literacy and best practices at low or no cost to individuals and groups from primary school through retirement and including life events.

PPE Equipment Fundraiser: EFF collaborated with several Allstate Insurance offices to raise funds for PPE equipment. Over 2,000 masks were delivered to various hospitals, senior centers, nursing homes and fire districts.

Rhonda Klch, Executive Director of the Equity First Foundation has taken all necessary steps to get out of her comfort zone and attack COVID with her resources. As a women entrepreneur, she used her relationships, social media and community to power through this current pandemic.

In March of 2020, when the pandemic really started to hit hard, Rhonda, along with the assistance of her board members, united to find solutions for the community despite what was going on. Rhonda believed that even though EFF programs may be on hold, that did not mean the people of the community did not still need answers and help. She has worked endless hours for the sake of the families that need assistance and need a voice.

Since the pandemic Rhonda has either spearheaded or collaborated in many projects to help our community out. Here is an example of just a few: The Grab & Go 3,000 Event in Patchogue: Rhonda collaborated with business owner of local restaurant to provide over 3,000 hot meals to families in need.

Grab & Go Breakfast in Rocky Point: EFF collaborated with local bagel store owner,

6 Week Marathon: March 29th was the beginning of a 6 week marathon of assisting front line workers with food. EFF and Rhonda did a Go Fund Me with local bagel store owner, Edward Henry to supply St. Charles, Mather and Stony Brook Hospital food every night.

Rhonda was chosen as Model Citizen of the month from local Magazine editor John Dowling for the efforts and work she has been doing in the community.

Although EFF has switched their programs from in person to virtual, they have been well received. They continue to offer free financial counseling and outreach resources for numerous families on Long Island.

As we continue to see re-openings and normalcy, EFF will be searching for volunteers and interns to assist with multiple projects.

The year 2020 is one few people will soon forget. Life changed dramatically and perhaps forever in 2020, when the outbreak of the novel coronavirus COVID-19 forced billions of people across the globe to make sacrifices in an effort to prevent the spread of the potentially deadly virus.

The sacrifices made in response to COVID-19 are perhaps most noticeable on holidays, when people accustomed to gathering with family and friends were unable to do so, or only able to do so on limited terms.

Despite those restrictions, people continued to celebrate on holidays like Easter and Memorial Day, and the Fourth of July does not figure to be any different. Fourth of July celebrations often take place in the backyard by the grill, and this year marks a perfect opportunity to expand your culinary repertoire.

American Flag Etiquette

The American flag symbolizes many things to many people. While the American flag is proudly displayed in millions of buildings and homes across the United States year-round, it tends to draw special attention each summer, when Americans celebrate their independence on July 4.

The Flag Code formalizes and unifies the standards of respect that must be given to the flag, even containing specific instructions regarding how the flag should not be used. The following are some of the rules that govern how to display the American flag.

Raising And Lowering The Flag According to USFlag. org, the American flag should be raised quickly and lowered slowly and ceremoniously. While the Flag Code suggests the flag should be displayed only between sunrise and sunset, if it is displayed at night, it should be illuminated. The flag should be saluted as it is hoisted, and when lowered that salute should be held until the flag is unsnapped from the halyard or through the final note of music, whichever is the longest.

When displayed indoors, the flag should be displayed to the right of the speaker, staging area or sanctuary. Any additional flags hanging in the room should always hang to the left of the American flag. When flags are grouped for display, the American flag should be in the center and at the highest point of any flag.

The American flag is an enduring symbol of freedom and sacrifice to millions of people across the globe. The flag should always be displayed with the utmost respect and in adherence to the guidelines set forth by the Flag Code.

The History Of America’s Independence Day

Few summertime holidays elicit as much excitement as the Fourth of July, also known as Independence Day in the United States. Each year, family, friends and revelers anticipate the arrival of the holiday so they can enjoy the sun, listen to their favorite summertime tunes, and commemorate the freedoms afforded by the monumental events that led to the holiday’s establishment.

Independence Day became a federal holiday in 1941, but July 4th has stood as the birth of American independence for much longer. July 4th marks a pivotal moment in the American Revolution.

According to PBS, the colonies were forced to pay taxes to England’s King George III despite having no representation in the British Parliament.

“Taxation without representation” became a battle cry and was one of several grievances colonists had with Great Britain.

Conflict between the colonies had been going on for at least a year before the colonies convened a Continental Congress in Philadelphia in June of 1776, says Military.com. On July 2, 1776, the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence from England. Two days later, on July 4, 1776, delegates from the 13 colonies adopted the Declaration of Independence.

The Declaration of Independence is an historic document drafted by Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson was considered the strongest and most eloquent writer of the declaration writing committee charged with putting the colonies’ sentiments into words.

Richard Henry Lee of Virginia was one of the first people to present a resolution for American independence, and his commentary was the impetus for the formal Declaration of Independence. A total of 86 changes were made to Jefferson’s original draft

until the final version was adopted. The signing of the document helped to solidify independence, and eventually lead to the formation of the United States of America.

A total of 56 delegates signed the document.

Although John Hancock’s signature is the largest, it did not hold more weight than the other signatures.

Rather, rumor has it, Hancock signed it so large so that the “fat, old King could read it without his spectacles.” However, the National Archives says it was also customary that, since Hancock was the president of the Continental Congress, he be the first person to sign the document centered below the text.

The Pennsylvania Evening Post was the first newspaper to print the Declaration of Independence on July 6, 1776. The first public readings of the Declaration were held in Philadelphia’s Independence Square on July 8, 1776.

Nassau County’s 2020 July 4th Parade will take place inside Old Bethpage Village Restoration, open to those who pre-purchase one of a limited number of e-tickets online that will reserve a socially distant parking space, enabling families to watch a parade of vintage military vehicles from the collection of the Museum of American Armor.

The gates to Old Bethpage Village Restoration, 1303 Round Swamp Roads, Old Bethpage, will open to advance ticket holders at 9:30 a.m. on July 4th and all cars must be parked by 10:15 a.m.

Various historic vehicles will drive in convoy while masked living historians from the Long Island Living History Association pass in review.

Cars will be admitted only with pre-reservation e-tickets purchased on a first come – first served basis and available for $25 by going on line at www.

OBVRnassau.com.

Families will be required to stay with their vehicles,

masked, and separated from other vehicles by a designated number of feet as directed by park safety personnel.

A Parade Of History The Armor Museum hosts an operational collection of over forty vehicles, many of which will participate in the July 4th parade. Vehicles expected to be in motion include the legendary Sherman tank, the mighty Hellcat, halftracks, armored cars similar to those that liberated the Nazi death camps, Vietnam era combat vehicles, and the M48 Patton tank that would have confronted Soviet armor in the disastrous event the Cold War became an open conflict.

The museum also will present operational replicas of several enemy vehicles as a dramatic reminder of the powerful forces that has faced America in its historic defense of democracy.

The museum’s July 4th program is being

supported by Squad Security, PSEG, Bethpage Federal Credit Union, Polimeni International, SUEZ Environmental, among others.

Limited Number County Parks and Recreation officials remind that only a limited number of tickets will be sold due to parking restrictions inside the park mandated

by COVID-19 protocols.

Due to the pandemic, the Museum of American Armor remains closed, along with other museums across the New York metro area, but will be prepared to open its doors with new exhibits, armor assets and displays, maintaining strict adherence to CDC protocols, when permission is granted by state and county officials.

The museum hosts over forty operational military vehicles and is unique in the New York metro region.

Following his MD, he completed his residency and served as Chief Resident at Southside Hospital. He continued at Southside as Assistant Director of their residency program where he educated residents while maintaining patient care and completing medical procedures.

Working alongside him for the past two years is Adult-Geri Nurse Practitioner, Catrina Grefe, MS, RN-BC, AGNP-C. As a Nurse Practitioner, Catrina manages the patient’s overall care, prescribing medications and treatments, conducting and interpreting

diagnostic tests, and treating both acute and chronic conditions. Catrina assists in performing procedures and educating patients on positive healthpromoting lifestyle choices and disease, injury, and illness prevention. Catrina is excited to be joining NY Health with Dr. Seodat.

“Patients can feel confident with me as their practitioner, and I am eager to deliver high-quality care to patients on the East End,” she said.

The Suffolk County Volunteer Firefighters Burn Center at Stony Brook University Hospital — the only designated burn care facility in Suffolk County, has 10 Safety Tips this July 4th Weekend as families continue to practice social distancing during the coronavirus pandemic.

Many will spend the holiday in their backyards for barbecues, cookouts or build fire pits where there’s a greater risk to sustain a burn injury. To avoid injury, Steven Sandoval, MD, Associate Professor of Surgery and Medical Director of the Suffolk County Volunteer Firefighters Burn Center at Stony Brook University Hospital, says “The best way to do this is to prevent the burn in the first place with safety tips and precautions to eliminate potential dangers.”

Fireworks are safe for viewing only when being used by professionals.

Sparklers are one of the most common ways children become burned this holiday, even with a parent’s

supervision.

Do not have children around any fireworks, firepits, barbecues or hot coals. Teach them not to grab objects or play with items that can be hot.

Go through a lesson where they learn to ask permission.

Limit the use of flammable liquids to start your fire pits and barbecues. Use only approved lighter fluids that are meant for cooking purposes.

No gasoline or kerosene.

Don’t leave hot coals from fire pits and barbecues laying on the ground for people to step in.

When cleaning grills, the use of wire bristle brushes can result in ingestion of sharp bristle pieces requiring surgery.

If you are overly tired, and consumed alcohol, do not use the stovetop, fire pit or a fireplace.

Stay protected from the sun.

Use hats and sunblock, and realize that sunblock needs to be reapplied after swimming or after sweating.

Use the back burners of the

stove to prevent children from reaching up and touching hot pots and pans.

Always use oven mitts or potholders to remove hot items from the stove or microwave. Assume pots, pans and dishware are hot.

“If burned do not go anywhere but a facility that specializes in burn treatment,” says Dr. Sandoval.

As the only designated burn care facility for more than 1.5 million residents of Suffolk County, the Burn Center at Stony Brook University Hospital coordinates burn services throughout the county, and conducts training and research in burn care.

The Burn Center also serves as a resource to neighboring community-based hospitals.

Patients of all ages – from infants through geriatrics – are treated at the Burn Center.

Congratulations To The HBT And SWMS Class Of 2020 On June 15, H.B. Thompson and South Woods Middle School eighth grade students officially became Syosset High School students.

During moving up events unlike any other held in years past, students received their certificates and bid farewell to the middle schools.

In events planned with a focus on safety during the COVID-19 pandemic,

students and families celebrated the culmination of three years spent at the middle school level and looked with excitement towards their future at Syosset High School.

Cars lined up in front of the schools, many decorated with balloons, graduation banners and congratulatory handwritten messages. Building administrators greeted students and presented

them with certificates and awards. Faculty and staff lined the parking lots to applaud, congratulate and bid farewell to their beloved students.

FASNY Urges New Yorkers To Play It Safe This Fourth Of July The Fourth of July may feel a little different this year due to COVID-19.

Smaller barbecues, less parties and limited celebrations filled with displayed fireworks.

Although sparklers and similar items can be bought and sold in much of New York State, the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) urges residents to let professionals handle the fireworks.

FASNY reminds New

Yorkers that although sparklers may look harmless, and almost toy-like, they are incredibly harmful and can cause serious injury and fires. “Fireworks and sparkling devices are extremely dangerous in the hands of nonprofessionals,” said FASNY President Steven Klein. “Although they seem fun, fireworks and sparkling devices can cause serious bodily harm and even death.

Fireworks should only be used by professionals who have undergone proper training.”

The tip of a sparkler burns at a temperature of nearly 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit, which can cause severe 3rd degree burns. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), sparklers cause roughly 25 percent of all fireworks-related emergency room visits, the most of any type

of fireworks device. A 2019 report from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission shows that in 2018, fireworks were involved in an estimated 9,100 injuries.

Between June and July of 2018, emergency rooms treated 5,600 patients for firework related injuries.

Children under the age of 15 accounted for 36 percent of these injuries.

According to the report, forty-four percent of the

emergency departmenttreated injuries were burns, with the most common injury to hands, fingers, and arms.

“Rather than take the risk of getting hurt, FASNY is urging New Yorkers to either attend a fireworks display in their town or county -- while maintaining proper protocols -- or to watch one of the professional shows that will be televised or live-streamed,” said

President Klein.

“On behalf of the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York, and all of the dedicated firefighters who serve the Empire State, we wish everyone a happy, healthy and safe Fourth of July,” said President Klein, “And should there be an emergency or unsafe situation, we urge everyone to call 911. It’s better to be safe than sorry.”
