Learn to Skate Town of Oyster Bay residents looking to cool off from the summer heat are invited to “Learn to Skate” by registering for skating lessons at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center, located at Bethpage Community Park. All throughout the year, skating classes for residents are offered at the Ice Skating Center. This summer is a great chance for newcomers interested in learning how to ice skate or for veteran skaters looking to strengthen their abilities. Beginning June 13th, registration for Series 6 (July 5th through August 22nd) will be available at the rink, online (www.TheRinx.com) or by phone at 516.797.4126. The “Learn to Skate” program offers group skating lessons to beginners through advanced levels. Skaters are paired based on age and skill, ranging from

pre-school and basic skills through advanced levels. “Learn to Skate” Series 6 is a seven week program and all classes are 30 minutes in length. For residents, the fee is $135 for the session. For non-residents the fee is $175. The “Learn to Skate” schedule is: Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Tuesdays & Thursdays 10:00 a.m. to Noon, Saturdays from 11:50 a.m. to 12:50 p.m. and Sundays from 12:15 p.m. to 12:45 p.m. Registration costs include admission into the session for which you are registered on the day of the lesson, membership in the United States Figure Skating (USFS) Basic Skills Program, USFS record book for new members, and stickers and USFS Badges upon mastering of each level. There will also be an evaluation on week seven with a recommendation for the

next series. There will be no refunds or makeups and skate rental is not included in price. Helmets, gloves or mittens and warm layers are recommended for all skaters. The Rinx Skating School is staffed with experienced and qualified professionals, governed by U.S. Figure Skating, USA Hockey and Professional Skaters Association. These professionals teach skaters the fundamentals of ice skating but most importantly, place a major emphasis on having fun. The Town is happy to continue offering such outstanding programs that are enjoyable for skaters of all ages. Volunteers Needed Volunteers are needed for the annual Good Shepherd Hospice/ Bob Sweeney Camp H.O.P.E., a two day bereavement camp for children who have lost a loved one and their surviving caregivers. The camp program, sponsored jointly by Catholic Health Services’ Good Shepherd Hospice and the Robert L. Sweeney Foundation, will be held on July 17th and 18th on the grounds of Camp Alvernia in Centerport. Children who have suffered the loss of an

immediate family member are accompanied to the camp by a surviving parent or caregiver and all are offered the opportunity to identify, explore and share their grief experiences with other grieving families in a variety of activities. Camp H.O.P.E. is staffed by the professional bereavement staff of Good Shepherd Hospice, as well as volunteers from both hospice and the community. Additional volunteers, who will be specially trained by the Good Shepherd Hospice

bereavement staff, are needed to support the families at this year’s camp. Each child in attendance is assigned a volunteer “pal” who will lend individualized guidance and support throughout the two day program. The Girl Scouts of Nassau County (GSNC) will spend its final week in its longtime facility located at 110 Ring Road in Garden City, while preparing to undergo extensive renovations. The move, scheduled for the first week of July, will provide the GSNC corporate offices, Cookie Cupboard and Girl Scout Shop with a shortterm home in Hicksville. “This transition into our new temporary office in Hicksville would not be possible without the

understanding and support we have received from everyone who is part of the Girl Scouts of Nassau County,” stated Donna Ceravolo, Executive Director, Girl Scouts of Nassau County. “We have been in our current headquarters for more than 50 years, and we are so excited for the muchneeded renovations that will help us better serve the 23,000 Girl Scouts members.” The planned renovations will be executed by design

The headquarters will receive much-needed structural updates including a new roof, windows and insulation which will provide overall cost savings on utilities, security and technology system renovations. The changes to the first floor will also add much needed space for meetings and programs. Troop leaders, Girl Scouts, parents and volunteers can visit the leased property at 325 Duffy Avenue in Hicksville beginning mid-July 2016.

Golf Classic Set Island Harvest Food Bank will host its 20thAnnual Golf Classic, presented by Petro Home Services, at one of the region’s foremost golf courses, The Creek Club, in Locust Valley, on Thursday, August 4th. The hugely popular fundraising event will honor Robert “Bob” McMeekin,

president and CEO of Interbrand LLC, for his dedication in supporting Island Harvest Food Bank, and numerous other causes that address children in need, the environment, the United States Armed Forces, and first responders. The Classic will begin at 10 a.m. with brunch and

registration, be followed by an 11 a.m. shotgun start, and conclude with its Dinner on the Sound awards’ celebration at 6 p.m. Golf registration, which includes the Dinner on the Sound, is $800 per individual golfer, and $3200 for a foursome. For those wishing to attend just the Dinner

ART SHOWCASE - The Plainview-Old Bethpage School District’s H.B Mattlin Middle School recently held its Art 9 Show to celebrate the creative artwork crafted by eight grade students. The school established its own art advanced placement program for students who have demonstrated progressive artistic abilities. The students in this program have created a variety of work ranging from still-life drawings to medium-sized sculptures. Swimming into Summer Let me begin by extending a fin of appreciation to all those fans who have written in after what I like to call “The Great Snail Debacle.” There were a few condolences on the untimely passing of Squeegee; but, mostly, readers seemed to side with me in my quest to rid my tank of this unwanted aquatic vacuum. Kudos to you all for seeing things my way! On another note, following the intruder’s departure, my Human was horrified to notice that my fins seemed unusually frayed and damaged. Was it stress? Was it the deteriorating water quality due to this creature’s special “cookies”

and the residue they left behind? Or, was it my refusal to be “scooped” out of my underwater oasis into my old bowl for temporary maintenance and cleaning? This last option seems most likely, as I fight my Human every time I see her coming with that cup. I know it only means one thing – bath time. At any rate, when I caught a glimpse of my reflection in the glass, I was truly horrified at the state of my once-luxurious aqua fins. I sulked for days, burrowing into the gravel and hiding behind my plant at the first sign of visitors, not wanting anyone to see me in such a decimated state. But, several weeks later, they seem to be slowly

shaping up and rejuvenating themselves. Hopefully, I’ll be runway ready in another month or so. Speaking of, August 16th will mark my year and a half birthday with my Human. Rumor has it this is also her birthday, so I suppose I’ll have to share my cupcake this time. I guess it’s only fair, seeing as she’s provided such exceptional food and shelter all these months, even including me in the family’s holiday celebrations and such. I hope I get a festive party hat again! ‘Til then, this is Buddy, thanking readers once again for their continuous love and support. Your letters keep me swimming happily - until I find something else to grumble about, of course.

Poster Winners Announced received certificates, trophies and citations from Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano, Nassau County Legislator Rose Marie Walker and Nassau County Legislator Laura Schaefer. Bethpage Water District Superintendent also gave remarks to congratulate the students on their award-winning posters. “It was challenging to choose only nine out of the 200 students in the Bethpage School District who submitted entries to this year’s poster contest,” said Board of Commissioners Treasurer John R. Sullivan. “We were ecstatic that students, teachers and members of the community have taken an interest in learning about our most important resource.” The Bethpage Water District annual poster contest is intended to encourage students to learn more about their water supply and the power they have to influence it, today, and in the future. In addition to conducting this year’s contest, Superintendent Michael Boufis also led a water-cycle lesson for fourth grade students in each elementary school. The winning posters will be on display throughout the summer at the Bethpage Public Library in the children’s section. “Educating our youth about the water supply is crucial to better serving our community,” said Board of Commissioners Secretary John F.

Bethpage Water District Superintendent Michael Boufis recently visited Bethpage School District elementary schools, Charles Campagne Elementary School, Central Boulevard Elementary School and Kramer Lane Elementary School, to teach students facts about their drinking water. He conducted a presentation that included the molecular make-up of water, the water cycle and water quality. “You are never too young to begin learning

about your water supply,” said Bethpage Water District Superintendent Michael Boufis. “It is our responsibility to help the youth understand where their water comes from so they know how to maintain it and become committed safeguarding it for the future. The health and safety of our drinking water will be in their hands someday soon.” The students learned about groundwater systems, filtration, water quality concerns and the Bethpage Water District’s

role in protecting and providing water to the Bethpage community on a daily basis. Superintendent Boufis introduced the new technologies that are removing any contamination from the water supply and allowed students to touch and observe carbon and airstripping tower media used in the water filtration processes. Students were also given a chance to interact with fossils and samples from Long Island’s aquifers - the source of Long Island’s water supply.

Math Olympiads Two Math Olympiad teams from the PlainviewOld Bethpage School District’s H.B. Mattlin Middle School recently competed in the 10th annual Nassau County Mathematics Tournament at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Old Westbury. More than 275 students from throughout Long Island took part in the tournament, participating in a series

of math-focused activities including individual- and team-based competitions. H.B. Mattlin Middle School student Andre Oganesian was declared the winner of the individual competition. In addition, Andre and his teammates, Cooper Davis, Rachel Gordon and Michael Khalfen, earned second place out of 55 other teams competing in the event for the team competition.

Plainview students Ella Soccoli, Daniel Shemetov, Jeremy Grossman, Ryan Farrell and Brendan Rodriguez were also recognized for their success at the event. All students were chosen to participate in the competition because of their high Math Olympiad contest scores throughout the year.

The Bethpage Water District Board of Commissioners William J. Ellinger, John R. Sullivan and John F. Coumatos recently presented awards to local fourth grade students who finished in first, second and third place in the District’s annual w a t e r- c o n s e r v a t i o n poster contest, “No Bethpage Without Water.” The students’ accomplishment was based on posters they submitted to the District answering the question, “when do I use water the most and why is it important to conserve water?” The nine students honored at the award ceremony were chosen from more than 200 fourth grade participants from the Bethpage School District. “We were incredibly proud to see so many local students participate in this year’s water conservation poster contest,” said Board of Commissioners Chairman William J. Ellinger. “An interest in the community’s water supply is essential to its future protection. Badminton & Volleyball Residents are invited to take part in the Town of Oyster Bay’s Summer Adult Co-Ed Badminton and Adult Co-Ed Volleyball Programs. Both programs are open to players who are 18 and older and will be held at the Town of Oyster Bay Hicksville Athletic Center. The badminton program begins on Sunday, July 10th and will be held on Thursdays and Sundays from 8:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. and Fridays from 9 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. The volleyball program starts on Monday, July 11th and will be held on Mondays and Tuesdays from 9:00

Common Car Seat Mistakes Parents Should Avoid (NAPSI)—Parents of young children need to be better educated in order to avoid making potentially dangerous safety mistakes when they are on the go. The Problem Automobile crashes remain a leading cause of death for children and it’s important that parents consistently and correctly use the appropriate car seat to keep their child passengers safe. Thompson (HBT) Middle School in Syosset came away with multiple awards at the Nassau County Mathematics Teachers Association Tournament held in May, including the first-place overall team award. Huang, David Wang and Caroline Zhu won the overall tournament, which consisted of 55 teams from throughout the county who came to SUNY Old Westbury to demonstrate their knowledge of mathematics. Each participating team was asked to answer questions covering different areas of advanced mathematics. David and Amanda also won

second- and won thirdplace honors, respectively. A second HBT team, comprised of students Michael D’Amato, Lexi Langman, Shreya Motagnahlli, Spencer Rubin and Lauren Steiner also competed. Teachers Carina Lynam and Alyce Poch coach the HBT Math Olympiad teams.

Syosset High School’s Templar Wright and Maxwell Herman were recently honored at the Roger Rees Awards for Excellence in Student Performance, held at the Beacon School in Manhattan in May. Templar received one of two full scholarships awarded by the American Musical Theatre Academy (AMTA) for her portrayal of Éponine in the school’s recent production of “Les Misérables.” Maxwell was named a finalist in the Roger Ress Awards Best Actor category for his role as Jean Valjean in the same production. Through the AMTA scholarship, Templar will train in New York

City and London at the ATMA’s musical theatre one-year preparatory program beginning in September. T h e Rogers Rees showcase, hosted by Tim Federle (co-writer of “Tuck Everlasting”), featured 35 students who had played leading roles in 26 high school productions held throughout the five boroughs of New York City, Long Island and Westchester. This was the first time that Syosset High School participated in the awards competition, which honors the late, beloved Olivier and Tony awardwinning actor Roger Rees. Templar and Max

When It’s Time To Not Drive (NAPSI)—Staying on the road to safety may be harder for many elderly drivers than they realize. The Danger According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, senior citizens account for only 9 percent of the population but almost 14 percent of fatal traffic accidents. As people age, their driving patterns change. Retirement, different schedules and new activities affect when and where they drive. Although most older adults drive safely because they have a lot of experience behind

the wheel, when they are involved in crashes, they may be hurt more seriously than younger drivers. Many see driving as an important part of staying independent, and people 70 and older tend to keep their licenses longer and drive more miles than in the past. What To Do Elderly drivers and the people who care for them should have a trusted doctor check their eyes and reflexes to determine whether they should be driving anymore. If it seems a driver you care about should be off the road, listen to his or

her concerns and feelings on the subject. Explore the possibilities. Are there solutions that could keep him or her driving safely longer, such as getting new glasses or only driving during the day? Try to arrange for alternative transportation so he doesn’t feel trapped at home. If she sells her car, remind her of the money she’ll save on insurance and maintenance—which can be used for buses and taxis. Having this talk may not be easy but you could save a life.

Matthew Cimino and Rujuta Desai are the Hicksville High School Class of 2016’s valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively. The two standouts boast remarkable lists of wellrounded accolades, and both have displayed a relentless commitment to success throughout their four years of high school. Cimino has participated in several community service endeavors, including those through student government, jazz band and Modern Music Masters. He is a third-degree black belt in karate, and helps teach younger students at Kempo Martial Arts. Cimino hopes to one day create his own rides as an engineer/imaginer at Walt Disney World, and will be majoring in civil or mechanical engineering at Stony Brook University in the fall. Desai’s GPA was 102.81 and she, like Cimino, routinely selected the most rigorous college preparatory program available at the high school. She scored a perfect 800 on the math section of the SAT the first time she took it. She has been an active member of the Key Club and Science Olympiad team since her freshman year, won gold at a math fair in high school, and won

Journalists Honored Congratulations to the staff of Syosset High School student newspaper The Pulse, which received a record 10 awards at the recent Long Island Press High School Journalism Awards. The competition recognizes excellence in student journalism among 124 school districts in both Nassau and Suffolk counties. Overall, six Syosset High School students were presented with awards. Sophomore Sarah Wang won five awards, three for her article “Master of None Brilliantly Discusses Social Issues in a Digitalized Society.” Juhi Thomas,

also a sophomore, won first place in the School Column category. Sophomore Elle Park and junior Jacob Gordon, writers of The Pulse Online, nearly swept the Online Editorial category with second- and third-place entries. Senior Max Salit, editor-in-chief for The Pulse Online, received an impressive third-place award for Overall Best Online News Site in only the third year of the paper’s web format. Finally, in addition to an earlier award in School Arts Review, sophomore Brooke Lewitas received recognition in one of the most prestigious

categories of the evening. Lewitas’ article, “Life as a Transgendered Student,” was awarded honorable mention in the category that highlights the four best stories out of more than 2,000 submissions. Summer Hockey School The Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center is currently offering registration for the Town’s Summer Hockey School program, developed by The Rinx Hockey School at the Town’s Ice Skating Center, located at 1001 Stewart Avenue in Bethpage. Hockey enthusiasts can sign up for any number of weekly sessions from one week to all eight weeks of the program. For 22 years, The Rinx has provided quality Hockey Camps and Clinics. We are pleased to offer the residents of the Town of Oyster Bay that same quality Hockey experience with all the FUN that comes from playing this great sport. The program will begin on June 27th through August 19th, will include a full day of on-ice and office training run by trained hockey professionals.

Throughout the week, participants will receive 15 to 20 hours of on-ice training and 6 to 8 hours of off-ice training. The program will be broken down into two levels, intermediate and advanced. The intermediate skills program is from 8:00 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. for ages 5 through 12. The intermediate program will include 15 hours of onice training per week and over 8 hours of training per week off the rink. The advanced session is from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is geared for travel players ages 6 through 14. The advanced session includes 20 hours of on-ice training and 6 hours of training per week off the ice. Both skill programs focus on shooting, passing, agility drills and field sports. There will be a recreational swim session and lunch is included every day.

The Summer Hockey School sessions will be challenging, but will result in newly developed skills for our young hockey players. Each class will be filled with useful tips and techniques to fully develop each student’s hockey playing abilities. The Rinx Summer Hockey School not only offers a fun way to spend the summer, but the perfect opportunity to fine tune hockey skills. Town of Oyster Bay residents receive a 10% discount on any of the training weeks. Early arrival and late pick up will also be available. Celebrating the Staff Hicksville Public School District’s 2016 retirees were celebrated with commemorative plaques at a special ceremony prior to the board of education’s June meeting. The ceremony, which was held at Hicksville High School and featured

principals speaking about each of the 10 retirees, also acknowledged the commitment of six staff members who have completed 25 years of service in the district. Each of these silver anniversary honorees received a silver plate award.

At the board of education meeting that followed, members of the district earning tenure in 2016 received district pins, and were celebrated with their family and friends in attendance.

As a culminating schoolwide community service activity, students and staff at Central Boulevard Elementary School in the Bethpage Union Free School District held a donation drive to benefit Birthday Wishes of Long Island.

The drive yielded boxes of supplies including wrapping paper, banners, board games, party hats and table clothes. The fundraiser was coordinated as part of the Thoughtful Thursday program which reinforces the school’s message of CBS: Character
