The Charity of the Month for June is: New Ground www.newground.org

income. Tina juggled work, school and raising two boys along with many other life responsibilities during her years with New Ground.

She attended an Associate Degree program part time and finished in three years.

She then immediately started a Bachelor Degree program, which she completed in three years.

Following each accomplishment, she secured better paying employment and used her extra earnings to reach her financial goals.

Upon completing the New Ground program and moving into a market rent apartment, she continued her education plan. This May she graduated with her Master Degree in Social Work and this summer she will become a homeowner!

Tina stated, “I feel awesome, I feel accomplished. It has been a long journey. I’m just happy and overwhelmed. I love working with people and there is a big need for people to care for other people now. It’s what New Ground did for me, helping me to get where I am. Now it’s my turn to help someone else.”

As you can see, New Ground is a huge help to the homeless community on Long Island and is there for those in need. They are currently in need of volunteers to help out in various areas of their organization. If you have a background in Education and wish to help tutor individuals out of their Levittown Main Office, the opportunity is available. You can also get involved with one of their Event Committees to help coordinate one of their upcoming special events, or with their Program Committee, which meets quarterly to review overall programs and services.

New Ground is a non-profit organization that helps break the cycle of homelessness right here in Nassau and Suffolk counties by dealing with it’s underlying causes, rather than merely treating symptoms. New Ground empowers children, parents and Veterans to achieve their goals so that they can secure a brighter future for generations to come!

This organization provides a portfolio of programming delivered by professionals, so that a set of services is customized in a unique way for each Veteran and family they serve. This way they can solve all of the underlying causes of their situation at the same time. They truly believe that this is how you break the cycle of homelessness!

Since opening their doors in 1991, New Ground has seen over 80% of the families they have served “graduate” from their programs self sufficient and in permanent stable housing.

This week I would like to share yet another success story. Please note: The name of the individual mentioned in this story has been changed for confidentiality purposes.

A Long Island resident, Tina, found New Ground when she was facing eviction from her apartment and had nowhere to go with her two young sons. She had fallen behind on rent because of a significant decrease in her paycheck and she did not have the means to pay off this debt or to afford a new apartment. She moved into the Long Term Housing Program with New Ground, where she paid an affordable rent based on her income and began to receive all the intensive social work and education services necessary to help her turn things around.

While in the program, Tina paid off significant debts on her credit report, increased her score by over 200 points, created a savings and secured better paying stable employment.

However, her real focus was education. She agreed with New Ground that the way out of her cycle of poverty was a higher degree to ensure greater

Collection Drive for L.I.’s Homeless Children

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Steve Labriola today announced a collection drive to support birthday parties for homeless children on Long Island.

Donations will be collected through August 1st and will support the charitable efforts of Birthday Wishes of Long Island, a notfor-profit organization located in Hicksville.

Through the efforts of volunteers and donations, the organization provided birthday parties to 1,288 homeless children in 2018, including gifts, homemade cupcakes, goody bags, activities and crafts.

“Birthday Wishes of Long Island is a wonderful

organization comprised of giving and caring volunteers who help bring smiles to the face of homeless children on Long Island – some of whom have never received a birthday party before,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Help bring normalcy, hope and joy to a homeless girl or boy by donating today to this incredible cause.”

Medical Marvels The five Hicksville High School students who took the top prize at the seventh annual Medical Marvels Competition were recognized at the April 16 Board of Education meeting.

They were presented with certificates from Superintendent of Schools Marianne Litzman and members of the Board of Education.

Roxy Dias, Maeryam Nasari, Bisma Omer and Kaitlyn Verdugo were tasked with examining the real-world problem of vaping in high schools and developing a solution to end the problem and improve the health and safety of the student population.

The program, which is run by the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research in Manhasset

and Northwell Health’s Center for Workforce Readiness, was developed to encourage Long Island high school students in ninth and 10th grades to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math. The team competed against 38 other school districts and took home a prize of $1,800.

A Senior Showdown

As the school year winds down and seniors begin final exams, look toward graduation and prepare for their postsecondary careers, the administration and staff at Hicksville High School are making their final moments memorable. On Friday, June 7, the school hosted a Senior Field Day on the athletic field.

The day consisted of a series of fun, relay-style challenges, similar in many ways to the field day events enjoyed by elementary students.

Seniors had a wonderful time and developed camaraderie with their teammates during these spirited games.

Dozens of PSEG Long Island employees, including Linda Zhang of Bethpage, recently participated in the Marie Kondo Challenge to celebrate the Lunar New Year. Led by the company’s volunteer group, ASPIRE— Asians & Pacific Islanders Reaching for Excellence, employees were challenged to clean out unneeded and unwanted items and clothing from their homes.

The Lunar New Year spring cleaning is a tradition in some Asian cultures that symbolizes a fresh start to a prosperous new year.

As a result of the challenge, two vanloads of clothing were donated

to LI Coalition for the Homeless.

“This was a wonderful way to embrace the diversity of our employees, while supporting the community we serve,” said Zhang, PSEG Long Island’s ASPIRE president who organized the ativity. “Not only did our participants have fun doing their spring cleaning, but we were able to help those in our community meet some basic needs. All in all, it was a wonderful event that helped many people.”

Class Of 2019 Valedictorians And Salutatorians The Nassau County Council of School Superintendents honored 115 seniors from 55 public high schools for their outstanding academic achievements at its annual Celebrating Excellence Breakfast on June 7 at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury.

High school valedictorians, salutatorians and honor student designees were joined at the breakfast by their superintendents, principals and family members.

Celebrating Excellence Breakfast Committee Co-Chairperson and East Rockaway Union Free School District Superintendent of Schools Lisa Ruiz said it was an opportunity to recognize Long Island’s brightest young men and women who will soon be off to some of the nation’s most prestigious colleges.

Dr. Michael Nagler,

president of NCCSS and superintendent of the Mineola School District, acknowledged the top students for their hard work and tenacity, and reminded them to remain lifelong learners and to always be good listeners.

“Seek first to understand, then be understood,” he told the seniors.

The keynote speaker was Michael Braun, a 2013 graduate of Elmont Memorial High School, who was the 2018-19 student representative on the SUNY Board of Trustees. Braun noted that about 3.6 million students will graduate high school in the United States this year, making the roughly 72,000 valedictorians and salutatorians part of an elite group. He said that sometimes dreams change and success may come in ways they never envisioned, but it’s important for them

NASTARs are chosen for their innovation, their ability to seamlessly integrate technology to the curriculum, and

for their exemplary technology leadership.

Ms. Rochford was selected as Bethpage’s NASTAR Award recipient for her creative and innovative use of technology to support teaching and learning in her classroom.

Ms. Rochford has expanded the walls of her classroom with her use of technology in projects such as establishing pen pals with students outside of the district. She continues to remain open to learning and adding

new tools of technology to support students.

Ms. Rochford has also supported the district’s initiative of using Twitter to promote and showcase the great lessons taking place in her classroom and around the community.

“I am so honored, humbled and lucky to be a part of such a wonderful school family and community,” said Ms. Rochford. “I am grateful for the support from the district, school and first grade team.”

A Feeding Collaboration First and fourth grade students at the Bethpage Union Free School District’s Central Boulevard Elementary School worked together in the building’s STEM lab to create bird feeders for the surrounding environment.

During the week of June 10, first grade classes studied bird feeders and their importance, then

were joined by fourth grade classes to create homemade bird feeders from several household and purchased products.

Under the instruction of STEM teacher Mara Karfinkel, the students used milk cartons, food containers, donut boxes, tape and tree branches to manufacture feeders.

The design for each feeder was illustrated by a

first grade student. Fourth graders helped in bringing the sketches to life, using the materials offered in the STEM lab to construct functional bird feeders to bring home.

“Thank you to the fourth graders for coming to assist the first grade classes in creating their bird feeders,” said Ms. Karfinkel.

Pennies Pile Up For Patients The Bethpage Union Free School District’s Charles Campagne Elementary School students and staff members raised a total of $8,010.14 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society through the Pennies for Patients campaign. The district as a whole has raised more than $15,000 for the society this year.

LLS campaign manager Kerianne Stein visited Charles Campagne on May 14 to deliver the fundraising

news to the students and thank them for their efforts.

This served as a follow up to her initial presentation on Feb. 28, which focused on students being “superheroes” with the start of the campaign.

Pennies for Patients is a science-based, service learning program that allows students to work together as a class, grade and building to reach goals of fundraising. LLS connects schools with local blood

cancer patients in addition to providing tangible life skills to participants and allowing students to see the impact they are making in the lives of others.

“Congratulations to Charles Campagne and the entire district for this extraordinary fundraising effort,” said Superintendent of Schools David Schneider.

“Incredible job by our students, staff and PTA to support a great cause.”
