Rudolph Giuliani will be the recipient of the “Lifetime Achievement” award at the 30th Annual Celebrity Golf Classic hosted by The Marty Lyons Foundation (MLF) on Monday, July 13th at the Old Westbury Country Club in Old Westbury. The Marty Lyons Foundation was created by Marty Lyons, a former NFL defensive lineman for the New York Jets and member of the legendary “New York Sack Exchange,” and a dedicated group of volunteers. The Foundation grants wishes to children between the ages of three and 17 who have terminal or lifethreatening illnesses and is unique in that it considers granting a second wish to a deserving child. Mr. Giuliani has held a number of governmental positions during his career, including United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, and is most remembered

for his leadership and resolve during and after the terrorist attacks that hit New York City on September 11th, 2001. He was named the “Person of the Year” for 2001 by Time magazine and was given an honorary knighthood by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 2002 in recognition of his ability to bring not only New York City together during a time of unspeakable sorrow and terror, but also many people around the world. Upon leaving office in 2002, Mr. Giuliani founded a security consulting business, Giuliani Partners LLC, and in 2005 joined the law firm now known as Bracewell & Giuliani LLP. Mr. Giuliani met Mr. Lyons in the mid-1980s and has been a generous supporter of The Marty Lyons Foundation ever since. “The Mayor has done so much for the people of New York, and so much for me personally. I’m blessed

and honored to call him my friend. I am proud to have the opportunity to present this special award to Mayor Giuliani,” said Mr. Lyons The MLF is not-for-profit charitable, tax-exempt 501(c)3 organization. Scattered Summer Thoughts By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As I write this column, just two days from the summer solstice, I am inspired by several seasonal thoughts… Weather. That great natural occurrence that has the ability to singlehandedly cancel any plans you may have made, no matter how far in advance, with no regard for reservations, ticket purchases, how many people you may have coordinated with… When Mother Nature is compelled to bless us with a torrential thunderstorm, blizzard, blistering heat or any other, more serious, natural disaster, you can say goodbye to your beach day. Society. We seem to enjoy our solitude, even when we are among several thousand of our closest friends in a

stadium or concert arena. As I mentioned in a previous column, I have tickets to about seven upcoming performances over the next several months. In the three shows I have attended so far, it was amazing to look around at the audience and see the great majority on their cell phones, taking “selfies” with friends, surfing Facebook, Instagram… everything but actually listening to the music. Money well spent. Traffic. Long Island is known for its congestion. While summer may bring a bit of respite in the form of school being out of session and some taking their vacation time elsewhere, this is counteracted by those who migrate en masse to the beaches and parks and pools daily, clogging up every major

artery on the Island. Going back to the summer concert scene, if you plan to attend any shows this summer, you had best be prepared to wait, especially as you attempt to exit. Just imagine about 15 lanes merging into two onto Ocean Parkway. I don’t have to – I’ve experienced it more than my fair share already. It’s not pretty. Let’s hope this summer brings its fair share of sunshine (on weekends, preferably, for those of us who work for a living during the week). And if you happen to be in attendance at a concert in the coming weeks, try putting down the phone for a few minutes, focus on the stage and enjoy the moment. Oh, and try to chill getting out of the parking lot. You’re going to be there awhile.

Graduating seniors from Syosset High School were the proud recipients of more than 100 scholarships and awards when the school hosted its 2015 Awards Assembly on June 9th. The Awards Assembly is an annual event that pools scholarships and recognitions both in and out of the district to reward outstanding seniors who have made contributions in numerous fields, including community service. The awards ranged from

academic excellence, such as student performance at Intel, Siemens and ISEF science competitions, to awards in English, literature and music. Community awards were presented by benefactors for local memorial scholarships and representatives from organizations such as the Islamic Center of Long Island, Cosmetic Dentistry of Long Island and the Korean-American Friends of Syosset. Both the Army ROTC and

Naval ROTC organizations gave out scholarships worth $200,000 and $180,000 respectively. Nassau County Legislator Judy Jacobs was also on hand to grant Legislative Awards to students. The evening also provides an opportunity for members of each elementary school’s respective PTA group to connect with current students and recognize their work.

For the past few years, ‘One Town, One Book,’ the well-established, national program that seeks to challenge communities to read the same book and discuss reactions with friends and families has been a summertime fixture in the Town of Oyster Bay. This year, Town Councilwoman Rebecca Alesia excitedly announces that in the coming summer months, participants will celebrate the 150th anniversary of Alice in Wonderland. “For the past few summers, the Town has sponsored One Town, One Book, with two clear goals in mind: to promote literacy, and to create a greater sense of community within our Town,” Councilwoman Alesia said. “In only a few short years, the program has flourished and helped some to forge an enduring relationship with literature that may not have been there before. Town Pools Open

The Town of Oyster Bay’s Community Park Pools and Harry Tappen Pool will officially open for the 2015 summer season on Saturday, June 20th. Town of Oyster Bay Community Park Pools, located at Bethpage, Marjorie R. Post (Massapequa), PlainviewOld Bethpage, and SyossetWoodbury Community Parks, and Harry Tappen Pool will be open daily until Labor Day on Monday, September 7th. Registration is currently underway at Tappen and the Community Park pools. Early registration at the Community Park Pools takes place from 12 noon

until 6 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and weekends from noon until 7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. At Tappen Pool, registration will take place from noon until 5 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and weekends, and from 12 noon until 7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Beginning June 27th, registration will be held during the normal hours of operation at Tappen Pool and at the four Community Park Pools. A copy of the resident’s general tax bill, deed or survey (with section, block and lot number) is required, as well as a driver’s license or

current utility bill. A birth certificate is required for children 16 years of age and younger. Be sure to check the 2015 Summer Guide which was recently mailed to Town of Oyster Bay households. Residents of all ages are invited to participate in either contest. All Town Beaches Open Residents now have an opportunity to enjoy the Town’s beautiful beaches at Tobay, Centre Island, Philip B. Healey at Florence Avenue and Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Beaches every day of the week. Summer is here, and if you’re a beach lover, you’ll be looking forward to spending time enjoying the Town beaches. Residents can visit all Town beaches seven days a week. Beach stickers, which allow entrance to all seven Town of Oyster Bay beaches, will be available to residents for $60. Town

residents who are military veterans or active military members, volunteer firefighters of a department within the Town, auxiliary police and members of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, are offered a reduced rate of $30. Senior citizens 60 and older, who have a Town Senior Citizen Beach I.D. Card, obtainable at the Town Clerk’s Office for a one-time fee of $30 plus a $2 photo fee, will be able to obtain a beach sticker at no charge. Disabled Town residents who are receiving disability insurance benefits under the Social Security Act,

as well as those who have a permanent disability as certified in writing by a physician, can obtain a free beach sticker after first securing an I.D. card at the Town Clerk’s Office for a one-time fee of $30 plus a $2 photo fee. Kindergarteners at A.P. Willits Elementary School learned all about food, flags, geography and culture when they embarked on a virtual sailing trip across the world called “Sailing with Shelby.” “Shelby” is Shelby Allen, a Class of 2012 Syosset High School graduate currently attending college at Chapman University. This past spring, Allen took part in a semester at sea program through the University of Virginia

that sent her to various locations around the globe, including Morocco, China and Japan. During her travels, she corresponded with the kindergarteners in Jill Mulherin and Kate Cervone’s class at A.P. Willits. Allen sent photographs of her at exotic locations holding up an A.P. Willits t-shirt and drafted descriptions of her experiences at each port of call. On June 3rd, Allen returned to Syosset and

Students Sail visited with the A.P. Willits students to present a slide show of her full semester at sea experience. Allen took questions from the students and discussed the various differences between the U.S. and countries overseas. With each port of call, the students referred to a “Sailing with Shelby” map mounted in the hallway at Willits and placed a marker where she had arrived as they tracked her journey.

CONSTRUCTION KICKOFF - The ground breaking ceremony for the construction kick off of the Renovation and Expansion Project for the Syosset Fire Department’s District Station 3 in Syosset was recently held. CHALLENGER SUPPORT - The Town of Oyster Bay recently joined with players from the Challenger Chiefs to play in a special softball game in support of Challenger Baseball at John J. Burns Town Park, located on Merrick Road in Massapequa. Officials from Challenger Baseball asked Town Supervisor John Venditto to assemble a team of Town employees to play in a friendly game against the Challenger Chiefs, who are a team comprised of special needs players 17 years of age and older. The Town of Oyster Bay has created several fields throughout the Town to accommodate the needs of Challenger Baseball teams.

“Have I left things unfinished?” is something you might ask. I could make a very long list if I were just up to the task. There are cobwebs in the corners, multiplying as we speak. Where is the calm serenity at home for which I seek? I picture my house nicely decorated and in my mind “just so.” But to tell the truth, it’s nowhere near; I still have miles to go. My counters and tables are cluttered, I should just put everything away; But some things have no place to go, so in the way they stay.

I empty all the closets in an attempt to make it neat, But then I get real tired and I need to take a seat. All the dust has made me stuffy, and so I find it hard to work. I’ve decided it’s my family’s fault as I slowly go berserk.

They have to clean this with me; after all, they live here too. They say that they will help me, and they swear to me it’s true. They’ll get to it eventually: “Calm down, Mom, you’ll see.” “We’ll get it all straightened out - neat as it can be.” I go get bags and boxes and open all the drawers; As I start to go through each thing, I find it gives me pause. Memories are now unlocked, and my mind just wanders to the past. What happened to my great resolve to purge this house at last? I now feel very tired, and I think I’ll go to bed; But then I see my bed is strewn with piles of clothes instead. What happened to the promises that I swore I’d keep? I’ll get to it tomorrow, but I have piles to move before I sleep!

Hicksville High School’s standout seniors were celebrated at the 31st Annual Senior Scholarships and Awards Ceremony. One hundred and nine students received scholarships, ranging from county-level awards to those funded by various benefactors. The school’s Chairperson for Guidance Services, Efthymia Rafaelides, presented the awards, which were followed by class of 2013 alum Lauren Kruzynski’s

speech reflecting on the graciousness of benefactors. The school’s madrigal singers, under the direction of Michelle Emeric, performed “And So It Goes” by Billy Joel and “America the Beautiful” by Samuel A. Ward/Darmon Meader. Assistant Principal Robin Leak presented department awards to commemorate the successes of the standout seniors, and senior Zafreen Siddiquee’s speech about the class’ appreciation for parents

and teachers followed. The program culminated with Principal Raymond Williams honoring class of 2015 valedictorian Sebastian Niculescu and salutatorian Priya Mishra with certificates and medals, highlights of their many accomplishments and words of high praise. “What these young people represent is obviously our future,” Williams said. “With the brilliance that is here on this stage, our future is indeed a very bright one.”

Golf Outing Raises Funds Supporters of South Nassau Communities Hospital raised a record gross total of $329,000 toward the expansion of the hospital’s Emergency Department at its 31st Annual Golf Outing, held Monday on two courses, breaking all previous fundraising records for this event by more than 16 percent. John D. Cameron, Jr., P.E., founder and managing partner of Cameron Engineering & Associates in Woodbury, NY, was the honoree of the outing, which was held at both the Inwood Country Club and The Seawane Club on Monday, June 15th. Aside from the recordsetting money raised, the outing will also be remembered by Brightwater, NY, resident

This is the second consecutive year that South Nassau’s golf outing has been host to a hole-inone. The money raised by the outing will support South Nassau’s “Emergency Department Expansion Campaign.” The campaign is a five-year, $10 million fundraising initiative to help pay for a $60 million renovation of the Oceanside Emergency Department, serving all residents of the South Shore from Queens to Suffolk. The expansion project will increase the Emergency Department’s square footage from 16,000 to 30,000 square

feet, increasing its overall size by 87% and giving it the necessary room to accommodate a projected 70,000 patient visits each year as well as establishing dedicated areas for behavioral health and pediatric emergencies. The Emergency Department currently sees some 65,000 patients a year but was designed to handle 35,000 annually. “John Cameron has been a long-time friend of South Nassau and his firm has partnered with the hospital on several important projects,” said South Nassau’s president and CEO, Richard J. Murphy. “We are grateful he agreed to be our honoree and help us raise funds for the Emergency Department expansion campaign.” Under Mr. Cameron’s

leadership, Cameron Engineering has grown into being one of the region’s premier engineering and planning firms, having received local, state, and national awards for many of its projects. Cameron Engineering serves the public and private sectors alike in the New York Metropolitan area and beyond and has partnered with South Nassau on many of its major projects including the North Addition, Outpatient Dialysis Center rebuild, and most recently the Long Beach Urgent Care Center. Mr. Cameron (a resident of Rockville Centre, NY) is a licensed professional engineer, marine engineer and a U.S. patent holder. His professional experience includes heavy construction,

government, facility operations, consulting engineering, academia, entrepreneurship and business ownership. Mr. Cameron is also the recipient of many personal awards and has been a frequent contributor to the news media, including television, radio and print. He and his wife reside in Rockville Centre as do their two married children and grandchildren. In addition to the holein-one, the outing also presented awards for the following categories: Men’s Lowest Score – Mike Ricciardi – 72 at The Seawane Club, and Lou D’Agostino – 78 at Inwood Country Club; Women’s Lowest Score – Jennifer Haggerty – 79 at The Seawane Club, and Kathy Masiulis – 89 at Inwood

Country Club; Foursome Lowest Score – Wes Price, Jim Kelley, Steve Puckett, Matt Curtin – 57 at The Seawane Club, and Rick Kuplicki, Dan Kuplicki, Myles Foley, Max Gartman – 74 at Inwood Country Club. The afternoon of golf was followed by an evening of fine dining, camaraderie, and fun at the Seawane Club.
