Students Collect Cereal For A Cause Students at Old Country Road School in Hicksville participated in a cereal food drive that ran for four weeks. The school’s student council coordinated the effort and collected 182 boxes of cereal from fellow students. On April 12, to celebrate the cereal drive contributions, members of the fifth grade student council arranged the boxes of cereal to create a giant cereal box domino run in the gym. After the successful fall of the boxes, the student body joined together to sing “Count on Me” by Bruno Mars. The cereal is being donated to local food pantries. Plainview-Old Bethpage Student Siblings Help Others Create Mementos Of Lost Loved Ones
AIDAN TAYLOR A brother and sister at Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District are taking a tragic personal loss and turning it into healing experiences for others experiencing similar grief. Aidan and Zoey Taylor founded Heidi’s Helping Hands in honor of their late mother, who passed away suddenly in 2019. The program provides arts and crafts material for the loved ones of patients at Plainview Hospital to create special keepsakes[GQ1] . The siblings developed Heidi’s Helping Hands after their own experience saying goodbye—which they did by creating mementos of their mother—in her final

days. “I couldn’t just sit with these feelings,” said Aidan, who is a freshman at Plainview-Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy High School. “I proposed the idea to my aunt and sister and it kind of escalated from there. My sister helps a lot with the craft part of it. I do more of the logistics and organizing people. I use my connections to help create fundraisers. As a kid, I may not have a lot of connections, but I try.” Zoey, who is an eighth grader at H.B. Mattlin Middle School, wants to spread awareness of the program. “People should know that there is an opportunity to create a memory of their loved
Town Honors Air Force Vet
Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino along with his colleagues on the Town Board recently honored United States Air Force Veteran Kevin Hertell for his humanitarian efforts in veteran suicide awareness and prevention. Kevin is the founder of the nonprofit Suicide Awareness & Remembrance Flag Corporation (SARFLAG), an organization that memorializes the thousands of veterans who have died by suicide after returning home from duty. “Sadly, more than 100,000 veterans have
taken their own lives since 2001 and it is time this epidemic is recognized. These fallen veterans have no monument, no memorials, no adequate media coverage and little support,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Kevin has designed a flag to honor them that currently flies in 13 states, and now will be on display here in the Town of Oyster Bay aside our POW Flag and Chair.” The flag also honors, unites, and respects their families and builds awareness around removing the stigma
associated with mental health and seeking treatment, serving as a reminder that ‘Not All Wounds are Visible.’ Veterans facing mental health issues should call the Veteran’s Crisis Line at 1-800-273-8255 ext. 1; if you have hearing loss, call TTY: 1-800-799-4889. This hotline offers free and confidential support to all veterans, all service members, National Guard and Reserves, and their family members and friends 24/7, 365 days a year.
one while they are in the hospital,” she said. While Heidi’s Helping Hands is currently only available for patients at Plainview Hospital, the Taylor siblings would like to expand it state and nationwide. “It’s an opportunity everyone should have to connect with your loved one,” Aidan said. “It’s not about the fame; it’s about the feeling and the idea behind it. At its core, we are just trying to help people heal through art.” Aidan and Zoey encourage anyone interested to visit support.northwell.edu/ HeidisHelpingHands and TOWN HONORS AIR FORCE VET - Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino along with donate to Heidi’s Helping his colleagues on the Town Board recently honored United States Air Force Veteran Hands. The Charity of the Month for June is
Little Flower Children and Family Services of New York www.littleflowerny.org
Little Flower has an unwavering commitment to providing quality services for individuals with developmental or intellectual disabilities. For more than 40 years, Little Flower has provided residential services that treat individuals with respect and dignity. They were one of the first voluntary agencies to offer responsive and compassionate alternatives to state run institutions. Each person they serve is assisted in maximizing their potential for selfcare, social, emotional and physical development. The organization’s dedicated team of administrators, direct support professionals and clinicians work together to provide a continuum of care. Services are provided in residences across Queens and Long Island that feel like home. The majority of individuals with developmental or intellectual disabilities served by Little Flower participate in their Family Care program. Family Care providers provide an extended, supportive family to individuals who cannot live independently in the community by welcoming them into their homes and families. They support them as they become productive and active members of their community. All Family Care providers are certified by New York State and are supervised and monitored by Little Flower. Family Care providers are a dedicated group that does so much day in and day out by providing personal, social, emotional and physical care. They help these extraordinary individuals live full lives, whether by assisting with scheduling and attending doctor’s appointments, supporting them in seeking employment or helping them gain new experiences on family vacations or community activities.
Little Flower also provides an on-site residential program, Individual Residential Alternatives (IRA), which consists of smallgroup residences that provide residents with more opportunities for greater independence. On any given day, direct support professionals help empower IRA residents by supporting them as they overcome challenges to reach their best potential. While supporting their basic health and well-being, they assist the residents with rehabilitation, guide them in recreational and group activities such as fishing trips or vacations, and support them in their day-to-day goals and as active members of their community. Little Flower continues to discover extraordinary abilities within their residents, and while those individuals may face a more challenging future than most, the organization is confident that they can still enjoy a full and active life. They truly feel that what they need most is encouragement, understanding and the willingness of others to help them maximize their opportunities for becoming part of the community. You can join Little Flower as a partner to help these remarkable individuals live full and happy lives as a family care provider or direct support professional. To apply, learn more about Little Flower or to make a donation, please visit www.littleflowerny.org.

are then reviewed by the District’s superintendent who is a licensed professional engineer. Any minor issues found during these regular inspections are corrected immediately and recommendations are made for larger capital improvement items, if applicable. “Generally speaking, water towers are typically more efficient to operate as opposed to other systems such as ground storage tanks and booster pumping stations,” said Commissioner
Amanda Field. “In addition, the reliability of this infrastructure provides so much peace of mind for operators, especially in emergency weather events that cause power outages. There is a reason why elevated towers are still in use today.” Each 2.31 feet of height provides 1.0 pound per square inch (PSI) of pressure. These elevated tanks are typically installed at the highest elevation in the system for this specific reason. The tank’s capacity is designed to provide enough volume

While the allowable capacity exceeds a typical max day seasonal pumpage of 10 million gallons per day, the District must be prepared to meet fire demands, extreme weather and ability to supply water in case of equipment failures. to satisfy high peak demand conditions during the summer while also having the ability to meet any demand caused by an emergency such as a fire. “The importance of infrastructure components like an elevated water tank cannot be understated,” said Commissioner Andrew Bader. “By conducting routine inspections and staying on top of needed maintenance, we are able to avoid some of the horror stories you might have heard in other parts of the country where operators have let the towers become a sanitary issue. We take an immense amount of pride in our water tower as it is too important to the overall water system, which is a cornerstone of every society.” The Plainview Water District has 6 well sites that collectively house 12 deep groundwater wells with a total approved capacity of 24.5 million gallons per day. “Like anything else, this critical component must be maintained and thoroughly inspected twice per year to ensure it continues to serve its essential role in the delivery of high-quality water to our residents.” Water towers are a triedand-true method for ensuring that pressure throughout a water distribution system is consistent. Using gravity, the weight of more than one million gallons of water stored more than 100 feet in the air helps to pressurize a significant portion of the District’s nine-square-mile service territory. This system ensures homes continue to receive pressurized water even in the event of an emergency, such as a fire or water main break. Plainview’s water tower is given a thorough inspection by the District’s engineers twice per year. During this inspection, a detailed report of the tank’s condition is produced. The reports

Maintenance And Function Of The Plainview Water Tower Something you can see from pretty much anywhere in the Plainview-Old Bethpage community, the Plainview Water District’s elevated water tower plays an important role, each and every day, in providing high quality water to local residents and businesses. Plainview’s water tower, which stands 143 feet tall atop the highest point in the community, stores more than one million gallons of water and pressurizes much of the water system. Given the critical importance of this piece of infrastructure, the District fulfills a routine maintenance and inspection schedule for the tower so it is always operating at peak performance. “Our water tower is a vital component of the community’s water infrastructure as it provides both water storage and system pressure at a much lower cost than alternative systems,” said Plainview Water District Chairman Marc Laykind.

New Baby Formula Collection Sites After an outpouring of support at the Town’s weekly Baby Formula Collection Drives, Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Steve Labriola announce the opening of daily formula collection sites in Massapequa and Oyster Bay. Residents are invited to drop off unexpired, unused baby formula at Town Hall North (54 Audrey Ave, Oyster Bay) and Town Hall South (977 Hicksville Road, Massapequa) from June 15th to July 15th, Monday through Friday, between the hours of 9:00AM and 4:45PM. All donations will benefit families who are experiencing difficulty in finding formula as the nationwide storage
continues. Supervisor Saladino stated, “We’re proud to partner with local moms to collect unopened baby formula and safely distribute it to local families who can’t find these important products on the shelves at local stores. While the nationwide shortage has been dreadful for families of newborns, we’re very fortunate to have goodhearted community volunteers who stepped up to make a positive difference in the community.” “The nationwide baby formula shortage is causing a crisis for many families throughout Long Island,” said Councilman Steve Labriola. “We all know that
once little ones move onto food, families are often left with extra formula in their pantries. We ask that you open your hearts and cupboards by donating unexpired, unused formula for families facing shortages and empty store shelves.” At the start of the pandemic, Massapequa resident Carmela Shimansky launched a Facebook page ‘One Parent to Another,’ to help mothers in need of baby formula and other childcare necessities. Working with neighbors and friends in the community, Carmela connected with local moms who had items they no longer needed and asked them to pay it forward by
donating them to others. This network has grown to over 7,000 members, and the Town of Oyster Bay is proud to support these efforts. “The goal here is really to help those families who can’t get to the stores, who can’t go from place to place trying to find what they need,” Ms. Shimansky said. “We hope to reach as many people as possible so that they can provide for their families.” For more information on this and other upcoming events helping local families, visit Carmela’s page on Facebook, One Parent to Another, or www. oysterbaytown.com.
Assemblyman Durso Collecting Baby Formula New York State Assemblyman Michael Durso, in coordination with Island Harvest Food Bank, is holding a baby formula collection drive to address the critical supply shortage and support parents in need across Long Island. Assemblyman Durso is asking residents and community organizations to kindly donate unexpired and unopened baby formula. All donated items will be distributed to parents in
critical need throughout Nassau and Suffolk Counties through Island Harvest Food Bank’s emergency operations distribution unit. “According to The Atlantic, 40 percent of formula is out of stock nationwide—a twentyfold increase since the first half of 2021, said Randi Shubin Dresner, President & CEO, Island Harvest Food Bank. “With the help of the Assemblyman Durso, Island Harvest is ready to mobilize to help parents find relief.
All formula collected will be distributed to vulnerable populations in critical need across Long Island through our emergency operations distribution unit.” “With the nationwide baby formula shortage having a real impact on families across Long Island, I ask our neighbors to assist those most in need by donating unexpired, unused formula, “ said Assemblyman Durso. “I believe that we get through difficult times by
uniting together and letting our humanity shine. Your generosity will, once again, help us overcome these challenging times in our nation.” Baby formula donations can be dropped off at Assemblyman Michael Durso’s district office located at 512 Park Boulevard in Massapequa Park. For more information, please call Assemblyman Durso’s office at (516) 541-4598.

All Seven POB Semifinalists In National Merit Scholarship Competition Become Finalists Earlier this year, Plainview-Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy High School (POBJFKHS) in the Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District was extremely proud to learn that seven scholastically talented seniors were recognized as semifinalists in the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Program. Recently, the District became even more
thrilled to learn that all seven of these scholars progressed to finalist standing in the competition. Justin Chan, Justine Choi, Jeremy Grossman, Michael Khalfin, Andre Oganesian, Aidan Shor, and Arnav Surjan have all been recognized as finalists in the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Competition. According to the
National Merit Scholarship Competition, of approximately 1.5 million students who entered the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Program, only about 15,000 were honored to be named finalists. In order to advance in the competition and be considered as a finalist, all semifinalists had to meet high academic standards
among other requirements outlined by the competition. The selection of about 7,500 National Merit Scholarships from this group of 15,000 finalists is now underway. The PlainviewOld Bethpage Central School District wishes its students the best of luck in their efforts to win this prestigious competition.
