Insurance Tips And Information

Dropping Collision Coverage

When you lease or finance a car you are required to maintain Collision coverage by the lender. They want to be sure that they’ll receive their money, or the car, even if the car is totaled in an accident. Many a price conscious consumer looks to cancel the Collision coverage as soon as the lease or lien is satisfied. This person should first investigate the value of their car. This can be done by googling, “what is my car worth?” and following the link to a car valuing service.

These days, pre-owned cars are appreciating due to the pandemic. Don’t assume your car is worth

$23,000 a year in savings* from lighting upgrades means more of this for Long Island.

For rebate information, visit PSEGLINY.com/Business.

When the nonprofit Canine Companions requested a free energy assessment, we discovered that installing LED fixtures and other energy efficiency measures could save them nearly $2,000 a month. And with available PSEG Long Island rebates, the installation was affordable. Today, those changes have meant more funds for the mission of providing service dogs to Long Islanders with disabilities. And that means a better Long Island for us all. *Actual

The Charity of the Month for June is America’s VetDogs

www.VetDogs.org/Neighbor

Girl Scout Troop 3249 Visits the Plainview Water District

The Plainview Water District (PWD) recently hosted Girl Scouts of Nassau County Troop 3249 to learn more about the water supply, treatment processes and water conservation.

America’s VetDogs is a non-profit organization, headquartered in Smithtown. They train and provide service and guide dogs for veterans, activeduty military and first responders with disabilities.

This year they placed their 1000th service dog and reduced the waiting time to receive one from 2-3 years to 9-12 months. Long Island resident Nathan Gardner is one of many veterans who have benefited greatly from America’s VetDogs and he’s eager to share his experience in hopes that it inspire others whose lives could be changed with the help of a special canine friend.

Some years ago, Nathan, who comes from a family with a strong military background, got in a car accident. He was left without reliable transportation, which left him frustrated. He was faced with a lot of down time and eventually decided to visit a recruiting o ce in his spare time. “I walked into the Air Force recruitment o ce, because I knew I liked what they could o er me.” He soon joined and became part of the Air Force Security Forces. “I actually ended up loving the job, loving the career. I was very happy with it.”

He served for 5 years, primarily working in nuclear weapons security, where he was required to wear full battle gear. This included a plated vest, all his equipment, two weapons, a bag full of gear and ammunition. “The weight of everything I was carrying ended up taking a toll on me.” He later found out he had a herniated disc, which has worsened since he left the service. Eventually, he developed two herniated discs, sciatic nerve damage and an atrophied calf muscle, which led to ankle problems.

Nathan learned of America’s VetDogs through the Veterans Resource Center at Su olk County Community College. “A lot of the things I was reading in the brochure matched what I was looking for and what I needed,” he said. “I wish I knew about the program sooner.”

Nathan reached out to America’s VetDogs

and was able to be placed with a service dog at no cost. He met and trained with his service dog, Kenzo, in February of 2022.

“It had gotten to the point where I would lock up, fall to the ground and not be able to move,” he explained. “So Kenzo has been trained to get me help. Training with him has been a life-changing experience. He has taught me how to handle myself and my disability appropriately and I really like how my mindset has shifted into a more positive place.”

Nathan has been able to flourish in ways he never could without a service dog. He recently graduated from St. Joseph’s University and will begin pursuing an MBA this fall. He has served as Vice President of the Long Island Campus Chapter of the Student Veterans of America and has new self confidence that he couldn’t imagine having years ago.

“Accomplishing these things means a lot to me in terms of what my future can now look like,” said Gardner, who attended his recent college graduation ceremony with Kenzo, his service dog. “I’m the first person in my family to get an undergraduate degree and I’m pursuing my graduate degree. I’m very proud of that. Getting Kenzo has been one of the best things for me.”

If you would like to learn how to apply for a service dog or volunteer with the organization, please visit www.VetDogs. org/Neighbor or call 631.930.9090.

“The Plainview Water District remains dedicated to engaging with and educating students throughout PlainviewOld Bethpage,” said PWD Commissioner Marc Laykind. “We are always happy to provide tours and educational tools to groups like the Girl Scouts, especially because they are the future of the POB community. Teaching them the importance of water and the impact that their personal consumption habits can have is an incredibly important task.”

Lead by Plainview Water District Commissioners Marc Laykind, Andrew Bader and Michael Chad as well as Superintendent Stephen Moriarty, the girls were taken on a tour of one of the District’s well-

pumping and treatment facilities, at which the scouts had an opportunity to ask questions about their drinking water. In addition, the group participated in a classroom session to discuss the hydrological water cycle, water conservation and how water is treated.

“We enjoy spending time with our local Girl Scout troops and teaching them the important work the District does to help protect our most precious natural resource,” said PWD Commissioner Andrew Bader. “Troop 3249 showed outstanding interest and participation in learning about how water is delivered to their homes. We hope the information they learned during their visit will stay with them and that they will share it with their families.”

After participating in the tour of the facilities, the Girl Scouts were able to earn the Water Wise fun patch.

To earn the patch, girls

must learn about water conservation and how they can improve their consumption practices every day.

“Educating the next generation through tours or local events are some of the most exciting opportunities for us at the Plainview Water District,” said PWD Commissioner Michael Chad. “The scouts and students in the Plainview-Old Bethpage community are always incredibly interested in learning about how things are conducted throughout the Water District.”

For further information, or if you have any questions, please call the District at 516-931-6469, email info@ plainviewwater.org or visit www.plainviewwater.org. Residents can also sign up to receive information by submitting their email address through the District’s homepage or following them on Facebook in order to stay up-to-date with District activities and initiatives.

Floating Litter Traps Return To North Shore Marina To Help Keep Waterways Clean

Oyster Bay Town

Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced that the Town’s Department of Environmental Resources has returned the floating litter trap technology, known as the ‘Collec’Thor,’ to Tappen Marina. Provided to the Town by the Suffolk County Cornell Cooperative Extension last summer through a grant from the Long Island Sound Futures Fund, the Collec’Thor is a silent, motorized waste collector which attracts and engulfs all solid or liquid waste floating on the water surface.

“This innovative technology helps protect our environment and strengthens the ecosystem by removing debris from the water,” said Supervisor Saladino. “I thank all of the local environmental organizations who assisted the Town in implementing this environmental technology, which collects up to 220 pounds of floating debris in just one cycle. Through partnership

with Cornell Cooperative Extension, Friends of the Bay, The Waterfront Center and the Oyster Bay/Cold Spring Harbor Protection Committee, we are continuing to work together to improve the quality of our waterways and protect our environment.”

As the Collec’Thor returned to the waterways this spring, students from Bethpage High School visited to take part in marine debris removal and data collection. The Town continues to look for additional volunteers to help with future gathering and data collection.

“Our environmental ambassadors are a key component to this project being a success. Once debris is collected, volunteers help analyze and track items retrieved. Students who participate in helping with the process earn volunteer hours and certification for their efforts,” said Supervisor Saladino. “We thank the Bethpage School District for their participation and

hope that their field trip inspires them and others to volunteer this summer.”

Collec’Thors are the latest in marine debris collection technology, and have been identified as the most efficient trash skimmers available for marine and coastal usage. They are specifically designed to target solid and liquid waste, including plastic bottles, cigarette filters and packaging, microplastics and hydrocarbons. The technology uses a small pump to draw in surrounding water and skims any floating trash into its receptacle. The mechanism adjusts with the tide and is easily affixed to a floating dock or waterfront location.

For more information on the Collec’Thor and volunteering to assist with future debris collection and tracking, contact the Town’s Department of Environmental Resources at environmental@oysterbayny.gov, (516) 624-5943 or visit oysterbaytown.com/ environmental.

Saladino Celebrates Plainedge Pride Day

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino joined the Plainedge School District for “Plainedge Pride Day,” an annual event held at the Brian Moore Athletic Center. A true family fun day, the event featured an obstacle course, bounce house, face painting, and refreshments for all to enjoy. Plainedge students also had the opportunity to share their talents through an art show, drama club presentation, and robotics demonstration. Supervisor Saladino congratulated students for their various achievements both in and out of the classroom and thanked the Plainedge School District for their continued dedication to student success.

Pinelawn Memorial Park And Arboretum Announces 2023 Event Schedule

Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum, known for its exceptionally beautiful grounds, unique architectural monuments, flowing bronze fountains and world-class arboreta, announces its 2023 event schedule.

Included in the calendar are the park’s many educational outdoor programs that celebrate the importance of various beloved insect species including ladybugs and honey bees, and the vital role they play in the environment.

For the first time, Pinelawn will also host Jazz Under the Stars honoring some of the great jazz musicians who are resting peacefully at Pinelawn, including John Coltrane, Count Basie, Lloyd Trotman, Guy Lombardo and The Royal Canadians.

Pinelawn’s Arboretum, which was awarded Level II status from the International Arboretum Accreditation Program, ArbNet, is comprised of three distinct collections including the Noteworthy

Collection, the Primary Collection and the General Collection. The Noteworthy Collection includes the Arboretum’s highest quality and most historically significant stately and mature specimens, including 10 of its highest priority and valued trees. The Weeping Beech, its oldest tree at over 120 years old, has a crown size spread of 74 feet with its enormous, shapely mound of sweeping, pendulous branches and hanging branchlets.

Pinelawn’s Weeping Beech is considered priceless.

Pinelawn’s Nikko Maple, its rarest, is a species which originated in the high mountains of Japan and its Katsura features heart-shaped leaves which in the Spring, emerge as purple. Pinelawn has multiple large Katsura trees situated in one location, which is rather uncommon.

Pinelawn’s appreciation of history can be seen in the many historical monuments featured within the park, including the Statue of Normandie

and the Garden of Freedom’s Jefferson colonnade, which is inscribed with an excerpt from the Declaration of Independence and its signers in gold leaf. The Garden of Normandie is home to the Statue of Peace, one of the largest bronze statues ever cast in modern times. The refurbished, softly glowing, ton-and-a-half bronze establishes the serene mood of the garden.

Another significant piece on the property is the John Donne Memorial which was the first monument created for Pinelawn by designer, Ismar David in 1965, who then went onto design much of Pinelawn’s park area, helping to create the beauty that Pinelawn is known for today. The Fountain of Peace, which is set within an 11-acre garden, was also designed in part by Ismar David, and resides among eight stately 40-foot tall Georgia Marble columns, discovered in Atlanta by Pinelawn where they adorned the Federal Reserve Bank for decades.

Back again by popular

demand is the 3rd annual Lantern Lighting Celebration, an evening where families can enjoy live music and a fairy-tale atmosphere consisting of string lights and candles. The event features a picnic-like setting where participants can personalize a floating lantern with heartfelt messages to their loved ones and hear their loved one’s name read aloud in a beautiful ceremony as they release their floating lantern within the Rose Garden Fountain.

“Our grounds are magnificent and continue to flourish as a result of our enduring work to preserve, protect, and take great care of the property,” said Justin Locke, President, Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum. “Pinelawn is a haven for those seeking solace in its tranquil beauty. Even if you don't have loved ones laid to rest here, we welcome you to visit and enjoy the magnificence of our grounds."

Hicksville High School Senior Earns Scholar Artist Recognition

Hicksville Public School

District is proud to announce senior Brandon Baade has been selected as a Long Island Scholar Artist for the 2022-2023 school year through the Long Island Arts Alliance.  Each year the Long Island Scholar Artist program recognizes students who excel academically and in the areas of either music,

visual arts, dance, theater or media arts. Brandon is one of 20 selected Scholar Artists from across Long Island and was featured in a recent Newsday issue.

Brandon was named a 2021 and 2022 All-State musician and won the Reflections Award of Merit for Music Composition in 2023. He was also a key member of Hicksville’s

2021 and 2022 marching band championship teams. Brandon was chosen for the NAFME All-Eastern Symphonic Band and will be the sole euphonium representation for New York State. He also received an award of merit for music composition in the New York State PTA Reflections Competition for a euphonium piece.

Through Hicksville’s Tri-M chapter as president, Brandon helped coordinate special performances that toured elementary schools in the district where the band would perform familiar pop songs.

He has also written music for special holiday events and created a brass quintet that performs holiday music for assisted

living facilities.

Brandon is ranked in the top ten of his graduation class. He plans to attend Northwestern University and pursue a dual degree in music education and psychology.

The district congratulates Brandon on this wonderful achievement and wishes him continued success.
