Injured teddy bears were lined up at Lee Avenue Elementary School in Hicksville yesterday, with kindergarteners taking on the roles of doctors and nurses to treat the injuries.

Slings were made, cuts tended to, and teddy bear pulses checked. It was all part of a free “Teddy Bear Clinic” orchestrated by

NYU Winthrop Hospital’s Trauma Center to teach young members of the community about injury prevention, treatment, and to educate them on the medical profession.

The children were asked to bring in their favorite teddy bear or other stuffed animal, with NYU Winthrop providing equipment for

the students to dress up as doctors and nurses.

NYU Winthrop trauma nurses assisted students in treating the injured bears, and they were aided

by Adelphi University nursing students. Similar Teddy Bear Clinics will be held at elementary schools in Freeport and North Merrick next week.

“We teach children how to take safety into their own hands such as by wearing bike helmets, seat belts, and stopping at stop signs,” said Ellen Berghorn, RN, who heads NYU Winthrop’s Pediatric Injury Prevention Program. “We also teach students that the medical world is really not so scary, and the children’s handson experience treating injured bears helps bring that to light.”

Added Stephanie Stam, Principal of Lee Avenue School, “It’s so important to impart to young students

knowledge that will help keep them safe outside the classroom and prevent injuries, but if emergency medical situations arise, we also want children to have awareness as to what happens next. It’s wonderful that we are able to bring to children hands-on experience in the medical world.”

According to Safe Kids Worldwide, a non-profit organization, road injuries are the leading cause of preventable deaths and injuries to children in the US, but child safety seats, correctly used, can reduce the risk of death by as much as 71 percent.

Unintentional pedestrian injuries are the fifth leading cause of injury-related deaths for children ages 5 to 19, with teens particularly at risk. Safe Kids Worldwide emphasizes the need for children of all ages to put down phones and take off headphones when crossing the street.

Added NYU Winthrop’s Berghorn, “The majority of trauma injuries are

preventable if children and their parents take basic precautions, stay alert and follow public safety rules.”

NYU Winthrop Hospital’s Trauma Injury Prevention and Outreach Program is dedicated to reducing the number of preventable injuries through research, training and public education. The Hospital works throughout the year with local communities to spread awareness about safety-related issues and advocate for policies to improve the safety of Long Islanders. Supporters, sponsors and spectators from across Long Island united together to bowl at Farmingdale Lanes in Farmingdale to make a difference in the lives of children and adults with special needs, raising money for Adults and Children with Learning and Developmental Disabilities (ACLD).

More than $23,000 has been raised for the ACLD Foundation to further fund the programs and services that the agency provides for over 1,300 individuals with special needs.

This marked the third year for ACLD Foundation’s Bowling for an Enviable Life FUNdraiser. ACLD partners with community members for bowling fun while helping ACLD pursue its mission to provide children and adults with autism, learning and other developmental disabilities with opportunities for pursuing enviable lives, promoting independence and fostering supportive relationships.

“We were sold out for the third consecutive year which means we have reached even more success in creating enviable lives for the people ACLD supports,” said ACLD Executive Director Robert C. Goldsmith. He added, “Our success is not only

measured by the amount of money raised today; it is more importantly measured by seeing the smiles on the faces of the friends and families who came out to have a fun day supporting ACLD.” Scott Fein, Vice President of ACLD Foundation Board of Trustees said, “I was very proud to be involved in this special event. On behalf of my fellow Board members, thank you to all sponsors and participants who made this day a huge success.”

City Chic sewing techniques to create luxurious outfits, and used edgy fabric for a down town look. The class constructed all their garments themselves, and it all began with a sketch.”

The Fashion Design Technology course at Nassau BOCES Barry Tech gives students an overview of the fashion industry, with the emphasis on the creative side of fashion design. Students learn on state-of-the art equipment such as dress forms and industrial sewing machines.

Throughout the course, they compile a professional portfolio to showcase their work, as well as create garments that will be highlighted on the runway during the popular fashion show.

The fashions, designed by the students themselves, included everything from funky day casual to elegant evening wear.

Corbin Garcia, Glen Cove UFSD, modeled his own design on the runway.

He collaborated with his friend, Robert Conti, Wantagh UFSD, to offer what they call “City Chic to Sandy Beaches.”

Future fashion designers had a chance to walk the runway during the Nassau BOCES Barry Tech Annual Fashion Show. Fashion Design Technology students proudly strutted down the catwalk modeling their original and colorful creations.

This year’s theme, “City Chic,” featured first and second-year students showcasing their original designs that can be worn in any metropolitan or urban setting. The classroom was transformed into a beautiful showroom, complete with elegant decorations and a lighted runway. The culinary department cooked up a delicious lunch for the crowd.

“The students created beautiful garments inspired by famous cities around the world,” said Barry Tech Fashion Design Technology Teacher Deanna Costello.

The athletic department at Bethpage High School enjoyed success and achievements from individuals and teams throughout the 2017-2018 academic year as select accomplishments were recently highlighted.

Three individual seniors recently signed national letters of intent to continue their athletic journeys at the college level. Jason Seiter declared his intent to play lacrosse at the University of Delaware after earning All-County honors this past season. A three-sport athlete, he was also named second team All-State and first team AllLong Island in football in addition to All-Conference for basketball. He was selected as this year’s Jay Fiedler Award recipient,

awarded to the top scholarathlete in Nassau County.

Seiter’s teammate Max Groom elected to join the men’s lacrosse program at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. Groom was an All-County honorable mention pick this past year. Additionally, Alex Freedman decided to continue his studies and play golf at the Catholic University of America.

Freedman recently qualified for the Metropolitan Golf Association’s Ike Stroke Play Championship that will take place June 25th26th at the Meadow Brook Club.

Another individual in the spotlight is cross-country and track performer Clayton Santiago. Santiago qualified for all three state

meets this past year by earning spots in the fall’s cross-country meet, the winter indoor competition and the upcoming outdoor race on June 8th in Syracuse. The senior is slated to compete in the 800-meter race. He also holds the Bethpage crosscountry school record in the 5,000-meter and is an All-County for both indoor and outdoor track.

For the third year in a row and ninth time in school history, the women’s marine fitness team were crowned national champions. Led by individual champion, senior Kaitlyn Chua, the John Como and Deb Rutcoached team claimed a margin of victory of 255 points to earn the title.

In anticipation of Alaska and Hawaii becoming states, Heft personally designed and sewed a 50 star flag as part of a H.S. history project. His teacher gave him a B- on his project.

Heft went on to send his flag to his Ohio Congressman, Walter Moeller, for consideration of becoming the new United States National Flag. It is said that President Dwight D. Eisenhower personally called Heft to inform him that he had chosen his flag design over 1,500 other applicants to be the new U.S. Flag!

His flag was officially adopted as the new United States Flag on July 4, 1960!

TRUCK DAY - Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently joined with students and teachers at the Town of Oyster Bay Syosset Pre-School Program’s “Truck Day” at Syosset-Woodbury Community Park. Amidst the pomp and circumstance of a full color guard, Northwell Health’s leadership gathered with veterans and high-ranking military officials to honor members of the military, recognize their sacrifice and hear from former Army Undersecretary Patrick Murphy. The event took place at Aspire One World Trade Center on Thursday, May 24th.

Since the event took place during Fleet Week, Northwell President and CEO Michael Dowling made sure to recognize “all Marines, sailors and Coast Guard service members” who performed naval service, as well as saluting “all of our soldiers and airmen.”

Northwell Health has worked to address the issues facing returning veterans and their families for more than a decade, serving as both a treatment provider for veterans and their families, and as a major employer of veterans that values the skills they bring to their jobs.

Juan Serrano, director of Northwell’s Office of Military and Veterans’ Liaison Services and a fellow veteran of foreign conflict, spoke to the importance of providing tangible commitments to those who serve. “Recently, we celebrated the ten-year anniversary of our Military and Veterans Liaison Services unit. We have so much to commemorate

and to be proud of. With this event, we continue to reaffirm and reinvigorate our dedicated health and employment services to our local heroes and their families. It is vitally important that we renew our vows to serve this community through continued education of our own employees, while spreading community awareness that this population deserves the highest quality of care that we can offer.

“We served, our families served, and it’s a privilege to continue to support our nation’s heroes...not just on Memorial Day, but every day of the year.”

As part of that ongoing pledge, for the eighth consecutive year, Mr. Dowling presented five veterans with checks representing the difference between their military pay and the regular salaries they would have received had they not taken military leave from their jobs at Northwell Health. They were: *Katrina Aronoff, chief radiation therapist at Phelps Hospital who served in the U.S. Coast Guard for five years and holds the rank of third-class petty officer and boat swain mate. *Ming Chan, a security officer at Long Island Jewish Medical Center who served as a mechanic in the U.S. Army for five years. *Davon Gass, a patient

care associate at Lenox Hill Hospital who served as a hospital corpsman in the U.S. Navy for six years. *Kelly Mahafly, an operating room nurse at Glen Cove Hospital who had the same role in the U.S. Army for six years. *Joseph Altidor, a food service worker at North Shore University Hospital who served in the Marine Corps for eight years, including a tour in Kuwait as a sergeant.

The initiative recognizes the financial sacrifice veterans and their families make and helps returning veterans reintegrate to civilian life. Since 2008, 37 employees have received more than $1.6 million through the health system’s supplemental pay benefit.

Mr. Dowling acknowledged the hard work and sacrifices made by our military personnel and their loved ones.

“I don’t think we do enough for veterans,” he said. “And, I don’t think we appreciate their sacrifices enough. They serve as an example to all of us, and that is to show the same level of compassion and teamwork as they do.”

The Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW) is a non-profit behavioral healthcare organization on Long Island. They serve more than 3,000 clients each year among 33 diverse communities throughout Suffolk County at four sites. Two of these sites are based in Ronkonkoma, one is based in Riverhead and the last is based in Yaphank. This Association was formed in 2014 with the merger of three successful organizations in Suffolk County. Those organizations are the Mental Health Association in Suffolk County, Clubhouse of Suffolk and Suffolk County United Veterans.

The Association for Mental Health and Wellness works vigorously to provide a comprehensive range of personcentered recovery and wellness-driven programming for adults who are affected by psychiatric disabilities, trauma and complex health conditions. They run the following programs and services: The NYS-Funded Personalized RecoveryOriented Services, Health Home Care Management Services for Children and Adults, Peer Recovery Oriented Services, Supported Housing for Those Diagnosed with a Mental Illness, Mental Health Helpline, Community Health Education, Support Groups, and Behavioral Health Home and Community Based Services. Giving a Hand Three classes of firstgraders at Kramer Lane Elementary School in the Bethpage Union Free School District acknowledged Earth Day with a project, “Small Hands Can Change the World.”

The young students embraced the annual event by creating cutouts of their hands from old magazine pages and gluing them around a painting of the planet on a poster board. The final project was framed and displayed

in the first-floor hallway of the school.

Lessons from the assignment included how to turn potential trash into pieces of art and an activity related to the three R’s – reduce, reuse and recycle.

Alumni Return As part of the annual PARP program at Village Elementary School in Syosset, Village alumni who are current students at Syosset High School returned to their old elementary school to read to students.

“It is always a highly anticipated activity as both staff and alumni love being reunited,” said Village Principal Jeffrey Kasper.

“The Village staff is always amazed at how their former students have grown into such impressive young adults. The alumni love to see their former teachers

and the collection of photographs shared from their time here. The seniors also enjoy talking about their college acceptances and future plans and take real pleasure in reading to the current Village children, who love to ask about their experiences at Village back in the day.”

This year’s event was made all the more special thanks to the Village PTA, which provided breakfast for the staff and the nearly 40 high schoolers who came back to enjoy some time with their former teachers and future high

school students.

The connection these former students still have to their elementary school and the staff here is wonderful to witness and as one current fifth-grader remarked, “I can’t wait until I’m in high school and can come back to read like my brother did.”

Special thanks to the Village PTA, Village library media specialist Trish Sergi and Syosset High School’s Castle coordinator Tom Rooney for organizing the PARP experience.

Writer Wins Gold Congratulations to Syosset High School junior Caroline Lee for winning a gold medal in the flash fiction category of the 2018 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards national competition, sponsored by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers. Caroline has been recognized for her original short story, “The Perfect Shot.”

National medalists in the competition represent less than 1 percent of the 350,000 submissions for the Scholastic awards

received this year. Since 1923, the competition has honored celebrated authors and artists, including Truman Capote, Lea Dunham, Robert Redford and Andy Warhol.

Caroline, who said she discovered the bug for writing in the fifth grade, enjoys incorporating fantasy into her writing and is working on a collection of short stories, which she hopes to publish next year.

Seven students from Harry B. Thompson Middle School in Syosset qualified to compete in the National History Bee National Finals to be held in Atlanta, Georgia in June. After qualifying by taking an on-line test, the students

advanced to the New York National Finals qualifier in April.

The National History

Bee competition is designed to motivate and reward students for studying history. Students from across the U.S. will compete in June at the National level for the title of National History Bee Champion.

Library Dedicated Syosset School District officials recently joined local government officials, teachers and family members and friends of the late Nassau County Legislator and Presiding Officer Judy Jacobs for a ceremony to dedicate the Baylis Elementary School library as the “Judy Jacobs Library Media Center.”

Nassau County Executive Lauren Curran, Nassau County Legislators Arnold Drucker and Kevan Abrahams and New York State Assemblyman Charles Lavine all provided words of praise honoring Jacobs. Syosset Board of Education President Dr.

Michael Cohen reflected on memorable conversations he had with her over the years. Others shared their experiences with Jacobs as well.

“She really interacted with the kids on such a personal level. She would teach the children all about voting and she would actually hold a pretend election with my class,” said Baylis teacher Linda Pizzarelli. “She truly was an amazing person.”

Baylis Principal Lisa Greiner presided over the dedication and provided some remarks of her own along with members of Jacobs’ family. Third-,

Olympians Take Awards suitable for four seasons in the Northeast. Also winning first place, in the Typography category, the team of Abraham Huang, Helen Lin and Paul Martin designed a new letter to be added to the English alphabet, including the phonetic sound, place in the alphabet and use in a word.

In the Drawing category, the team of Melinda Blumenstock, Michelle Liu, Rika Mizoguchi, Ryun Shim, Helen Zhang and Liana Zhang created an original drawing using materials and techniques of reductive drawing– good for third place. Also winning third place, in

the Illustration category, the team of Wilson Chow, Songyee Kim, Zahrah Nasim, Esha Sharma, Lynnie Yang and Zarin Zaman illustrated an idiom, creating a five-panel painting depicting, “She carries the weight of the world.”

Sponsored by the New York State Art Teacher’s Association, the Olympics of the Visual Arts program provides an opportunity for middle and high school students to participate in individual or group artistic problem-solving.

Historical Marker Unveiled

A historical marker honoring the publisher of Long Island’s first newspaper was unveiled in Sag Harbor on Wednesday, June 6th.

The marker commemorates David Frothingham, who published Frothingham’s Long-Island Herald from 1791 to 1796.

The marker on Main Street is sponsored by the Press Club of Long Island, which collaborated with the Sag Harbor Historical Society on the project. The marker was installed in front of the property where Frothingham published the weekly newspaper.

“This was another proud moment for the Press Club of Long Island,” said Chris R. Vaccaro, President of the Press Club. “We continue to honor places of significance in journalism history on Long Island, and there is no better location

than the first newspaper known to our area.”

Jack Youngs, president of the historical society, said, “To have the first newspaper that was printed on Long Island is what many locals proudly say is ‘A Feather in Our Cap.’ We had a newspaper eight years before Brooklyn.“ David Frothingham married Nancy Pell, a descendent of the prominent Pell family of Westchester. Several years later, Frothingham became entangled in a claim of slander by Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton. The claim, under the terms of the Alien and Sedition Acts, stemmed from an article published in a Brooklyn newspaper, the Argus. Frothingham was found guilty and a fine of $100 was imposed, which a friend of his from Bridgehampton paid.

A bond of $2,500 was set

by the court to make sure he would never publish anything that could be considered libelous in the future. His inability to pay the bond resulted in him becoming a seaman to earn the money. No one knows the real story of his demise, but it is thought that he took ill off the coast of Africa and died.

He was survived by his wife Nancy and daughter, Fanny, who would become Jack Youngs’ great-great grandmother.

In the last three years, PCLI has has arranged the installation of historical markers in Huntington, where Walt Whitman founded The LongIslander; in Hempstead, where Newsday was first published, and Roslyn Harbor, where William Cullen Bryant, the poet and editor of the New York Post, lived.

Celebrating the Class The top two students of the Class of 2018 at each high school in Nassau County were honored at the Nassau County Council of School Superintendents’ annual Celebrating Excellence and The Legacy of Dr. James Tolle Breakfast, held at Crest Hollow Country Club on June 1st. Valedictorians and salutatorians were honored for their exceptional success and accolades throughout their high school careers.

The ceremony was emceed by Class of 2018 Celebrating Excellence Breakfast Committee Co-Chairperson and East Rockaway Union Free School District Superintendent of Schools Lisa Ruiz and featured a motivational speech delivered by

keynote speaker Elizabeth Hashagen, News 12 anchor.

Hashagen spoke about her experiences in broadcast journalism, and about the importance of persistence and using setbacks as a driving force to achieve a dream.

“Sometimes, you have to design your own path, and not be disappointed if that path is littered with a lot of rejection letters,” Hashagen said. “Because all those rejection letters will make you strong enough to handle all the things that life is going to throw at you. You have planted a seed of your future - that’s why you’re here. You are smart, you are strong, you are determined, and that’s why you are at the top of your classes. It isn’t a ‘yes’ world, but just remember, when the world tells you

‘no,’ it’s the universe really pushing you to become who you are meant to be.”

Each high school’s valedictorian and salutatorian was presented with a plaque while the college they plan to attend was announced during their walk up to the stage following Hashagen’s remarks. The program also featured the national anthem performed by the Massapequa High School A Cappella Choir and opening remarks by NCCSS President and Carle Place Union Free School District Superintendent of Schools David Flatley.

The memorable event was designed to celebrate the excellence of the brightest seniors throughout Nassau County’s high schools.

Honor Flight Applications Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Thomas Hand today announced that Honor Flight Long Island is currently accepting World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War veteran applications for a free flight with peers to Washington, D.C. to tour of military memorials.

“Created to honor war veterans and thank them for their sacrifices, Honor Flights fly military veterans to our nation’s capital for a VIP tour which often includes the World War II Memorial, the Korean and Vietnam War memorials, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Marine Corps (Iwo Jima) Memorial,” said Supervisor Saladino.

“Honor Flight is an exceptional organization that provides and amazing service to our veterans, as these trips allow us to honor America’s veterans for their service and

sacrifice, and for all they did to help preserve our freedom and democracy.”

Long Island Honor Flight, a nonprofit group, is part of the national Honor Flight network and organizes, hosts, and pays for the trips, which depart from Long Island MacArthur airport. Flights are scheduled in the spring and the fall, and as part of the day’s itinerary, veterans and ‘guardians’ (volunteers who help make these trips possible) fly in to Baltimore Washington International Airport, where a waiting motor coach takes them on the 50-minute drive to Washington DC and the WWII and Korean Memorials, a visit to Arlington National Cemetery, and visits to the Navy Memorial, the Air Force Memorial, or other area high-points.

“This mission flies our heroes to Washington, D.C. to visit and reflect together at our national memorials,”

said Councilman Hand. “If you or any eligible veteran you know has interest in participating in an Honor Flight, I urge you to take on this wonderful and charitable opportunity.”

Each trip includes about 50 veterans, who are taken for free. They are accompanied by about 50 volunteers, who each pay $400. The volunteers assist those in wheelchairs or who use walkers and provide whatever help is needed along the way.

Honor Flight trips are provided for veterans who have not already visited the memorials in Washington D.C. The First Congregational Church Early Learning Center was recognized by the faculty, staff and students of Long Island Lutheran Middle and High School with a grant from the Lutheran Crusader Fund during a special on-campus service on Wednesday, April 5th.

Provided by an anonymous donor in 1998, a generous $1 million contribution enabled LuHi, located in Brookville, to establish a Crusader Fund.

The focus of the LCF is the creation and enhancement of innovative programs that benefit Christian institutions and support people and organizations in times of significant crisis or need. To date, over

$1,825 has been awarded to over 520 deserving organizations through LCF. The FCC Early Learning Center is a year-round Day Care Center serving children of the surrounding communities, ages 6 weeks to 5 years-old. The students come from homes with single parents and limited income families. The grant received from LCF will be used to create an age appropriate greenspace for toddlers in their care.

The current play space was created for children who are 3, 4 and 5 years-old and is not currently age appropriate for toddlers.

The new greenspace will include new surfacing and age-appropriate

equipment, which will insure the safety and well being of the toddlers, as well as create new learning opportunities for the children.

Locaetd on a 32-acre campus in Brookville, Long Island Lutheran Middle and High School is a Christ-centered, college preparatory school whose mission is to educate its students in body, mind and spirit. Recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as a School of Excellence, LuHi serves over 500 students, grades 6-12.

Students from Nassau BOCES Center for Community Adjustment spent this past year working toward the goal of giving back to the community. As part of their course work, the class attended woodshop at Career Preparatory High School.

Abbey Lane Elementary School students had the unique opportunity to learn circus skills during a week-long residency with Ray Grins and his wife Erin Grins from Cirque Du Jour from May 21st-25th.

Sponsored by the Abbey Lane PTA, the circus kicked off the residency with a performance for all grade levels which was followed by two instructional days for each class during their physical education periods.

Students learned a variety of circus skills such as juggling with colorful scarves and balls, using their hands and arms to do tricks with a devil stick, walking on stilts and concurring balance by spinning plates on a stick. Mr. and Mrs. Grins walked each class through proper techniques and
