Students at Fork Lane Elementary School in Hicksville were treated to a special literary/ theatrical performance presented by school staff and parents. Developed and organized by Library Media Specialist Christine Janda, the school’s Books Alive assembly has become an annual tradition to entertain youngsters while recreating some famous fables and books on stage.

This year, Fork Lane teachers presented “Anansi and the Talking Melon,” about a spider who tricks other animals into thinking a melon can talk; ”Listen, Buddy,” a silly tale about a bunny who just can’t seem to listen; and “The Legend of Rock, Paper, Scissors,” the story behind the famous game that brings the elements and objects of the title to life. Parents also put on a special performance of their own of “I Know an Old Teacher,” about

a seemingly ordinary teacher with an unusual appetite for class pets.

In addition to memorizing their lines and acclimating themselves to their characters, parents

and teachers created many of the costumes and props that helped to make the show a memorable one.

Students also did their part by creating colorful posters that

New Ground is a non-profit organization that helps to break the cycle of homelessness right here in Nassau and Suffolk counties.

This organization began all from the vision of an educator that was committed to providing a safe haven for those living in poverty. This educator saw that shelters were only providing a short-term fix to a problem that needed a real, lasting solution.

After envisioning an organization that provided a holistic suite of support services while empowering participants to help themselves, she founded New Ground in 1991 to do just that.

You can also get involved with one of their Event Committees to help coordinate one of their upcoming special events, or with their Program Committee, which meets quarterly to review overall programs and services.

Since opening their doors, New Ground has seen over 80% of the families they have served “graduate” from their programs self sufficient and into permanent stable housing. Hicksville High School’s J-Birds robotics team and their coach Catherine Temps were honored for their outstanding accomplishments at the May board of education meeting.

The J-Birds placed 16th in their division out of 68 robots at the FIRST World Championship in Detroit held in April. The team qualified for the world championship when they, along with their two alliance partners, Great Neck South High School and Tappan Zee High School, placed first at the School-Business Partnership of Long Island Inc. Long Island Regional FIRST competition at Hofstra University.

During the board meeting, members of the J-Birds provided a demonstration to highlight the functions of their robot which they mastered in preparation of this year’s game, “Destination: Deep Space.” They also discussed

the challenges they faced throughout the design process and how they overcame them.

Superintendent of Schools Marianne Litzman commended the team on their success. She also extended her gratitude to

coach Temps, chaperone Mr. O’Connell, the students’ parents for all of the hours they spent bringing the students to school over a period of months and the mentors that helped the students build a winning robot.

High School Robotics Team

Syosset High School students Sabrina Eager and Michael Wang are recipients of the 2019 National Merit $2500 Scholarship award. They will each receive a $2,500 scholarship in recognition of their academic and personal achievements.

They were selected from a pool of more than 15,000 Finalists nationwide in the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Approximately 1.6 million students enter the competition annually.

This year, 31 Syosset

High School students were named Commended Students, 10 were named Semifinalists and 9 were named Finalists. Students initially qualify for the competition by scoring among the highest in the state on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Less than one percent of the nation’s high school seniors were named Semifinalists on a staterepresentational basis.

The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic

competition that began in 1955. Students are judged on academic achievement, standardized test scores, contributions in school and community activities and potential for success in rigorous college studies.

Students are also required to submit an essay and a recommendation from a high school official.

Approximately 7,600 Finalists will earn the “Merit Scholar” title in 2019 and receive a total of over $31 million in college scholarships.

Boxing Out Bullies Hicksville Middle School students recently enjoyed a fun assembly on the serious topic of bullying. They learned about the behaviors that denote bullying and were provided with valuable tools and insight to empower them to stand up against bullying behavior.

Appropriately named Box Out Bullying, the program uses interactive theater to capture the attention of the students.

Presenters combined engaging multimedia

visuals, colorful costumes and evidence-based bullying prevention techniques to get their message across. A big box (named BOB, short for Box Out Bullying) graced the Hicksville Middle School auditorium stage, filled with many of these visual surprises.

Presenters also reinforced several important rules for students to follow, such as including others in their activities whenever possible and speaking with

an adult in school and at home whenever they feel as though they are being bullied. Students were also encouraged to participate on stage and in the audience. A considerable portion of the program was dedicated to cyberbullying and appropriate social media conduct, with multiple role-playing skits that demonstrated how words and actions can be hurtful to others, even when this is not the intent.

Self-Defense Instructional Program stated, “The Town of Oyster Bay is proud to offer residents an opportunity to learn self-defense, including different styles of kicks and wrist grabs, which helps one escape holds in an unexpected situation. Be proactive, join the program and help develop increased mental and physical health.”

Self-Defense Instruction Program Classes are offered on Mondays, beginning July 8th at 6pm and on Thursdays, beginning July

11th a 3pm. Both Monday and Thursday classes will take place at the Hicksville Athletic Center, located at 167 Broadway in Hicksville. The fee for one 10-week session is $60 for residents and $70 for nonresidents.

Mad About Magnets Second graders at Woodland Elementary School in Hicksville recently welcomed Mad Science of Long Island to conduct its “Magnetic Magic” cultural arts workshop that taught them all about the phenomenon produced by the motion of an electric

charge and the resulting attraction of objects.

Under the direction of the Mad Scientist, students investigated the power and daily uses of magnets and learned about polarity, how to visualize magnetic fields, and how to magnetize ordinary metals while holding

They also discovered how a compass works and tested a powerful electromagnet.

There were plenty of oohs and aahs during this fun, hands-on experience that drew Woodland youngsters into the world of magnetism.

Persistence Pays Off Lee Avenue Elementary School in Hicksville recently hosted a unique character education assembly that not only inspired young students to do their best and never quit, but also had them listening, laughing and later on, yo-yoing.

The NED Show (Never give up, Encourage others and Do your best) centers around the

adventures of a lovable character, NED, and his encounters with “Captain Courage” and the “Not Yet Yeti,” the latter of whom emphasizes that any accomplishment is attainable and simply hasn’t been achieved yet.

NED’s narrator/presenter also demonstrated some interesting tricks using a yo-yo, further showing students that persistence

pays off, and that no matter how difficult it may seem to master the yo-yo, everyone can do it! This mindset resonated with the young audience members, who were asked to pay it forward by cheering on others whenever a little encouragement is needed.

Every NED assembly is free to the host school and is funded through sales of “pay it forward” NED

Lee Avenue families were invited to pay it forward by purchasing NED yoyos of their own to help their children practice persistence and, in the process, raise proceeds to send the NED Show to the next school.

Student’s Literary Work Honored at the PTA Reflections Art Gallery at the New York PTA Convention in Tarrytown in November.

This year’s theme for the PTA Reflections initiative was “Heroes Around Me.” The National PTA Reflections Program welcomes students of all grades and abilities to explore and be involved in the arts. Students reflect on a theme and create original works of art based on the theme. In addition to Literature, the program

recognizes student works in the categories of Dance Choreography, Film Production, Music Composition, Photography and the Visual Arts.

Hicksville Middle School student Pratiksha Malayil is congratulated by English teachers June DiBello and Sara Smith for receiving the New York State PTA Award of Merit in the 2019 National PTA Reflections program.

For over 25 years, Smithtown’s Lauren Sklarin has been advocating for Long Island businesses and individuals, most currently as the director of community relations for Orchard Estate of Woodbury, a Benchmarkassisted living and memory care community under construction in Woodbury, N.Y. Today, Orchard Estate is announcing that her advocacy work and achievements have earned her the Long Island Power Woman award.

Recently at Leonard’s Palazzo in Great Neck, Sklarin was recognized as a change-maker, rainmaker, innovator and being a voice to impact change.

Drawing on the experience of caring for both of her grandmothers, she is passionate about helping Long Island seniors and their families through the aging process. She frequently educates the public about dementia and enjoys helping people obtain the best quality care to meet their needs.

“Lauren’s positivity and immense energy around helping seniors in our community is a rare quality and something

that everyone is benefiting from,” says Doug Cormack, executive director of Orchard Estate. “She makes Orchard Estate and the communities we serve a much better place, and I can think of no one else, female or male, who is more worthy of this award.”

Sklarin is also passionate about helping children learn the skills they need to succeed in life. She has spent the last 15 years teaching presentation skills to children in South Huntington, N.Y. As a licensed soccer coach, she has spent 10 years coaching children in the HBC Soccer Club and Smithtown Kickers Soccer Club. She has also coached basketball to children

through Half Hollow Hills FURY. With two children in the Smithtown School District, Sklarin spent three years as vice president and secretary of the PTA of Accompsett Middle School where she led many successful fundraisers.

Prior to joining Orchard Estate, Sklarin served as director of community relations for Home Instead Senior Care for Central Suffolk County. Before that, she served in account management roles for a number of public relations agencies, including Publicis and Edelman.

She graduated from SUNY New Paltz with a bachelor’s degree in journalism.

The Long Island Power Woman awards recognize successful business, community, cultural, political, civic and religious female leaders.

The idea is to bring women together to support and learn from one another so they can achieve their goals. The annual event gathers Long Island’s highpowered businesswomen together to celebrate their achievements and create powerful allies in the workplace and community.
