The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation I FISH NY program, in cooperation with the Nassau County Boy Scouts Theodore Roosevelt Council, will offer a free Freshwater Fishing Clinic on Saturday, June 14th. The clinic will be held at the Schiff Scout Reservation in Wading River, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. “Clinics of this type have received overwhelming responses in the past, demonstrating the intense interest in freshwater fishing on Long Island,” Regional Director Peter A. Scully said. “In these hectic times, fishing is a wonderful family activity that can develop into a hobby that provides a lifetime of fun, relaxation, and opportunity to slow down and rediscover the natural world that sustains us. We encourage people to participate in this exciting event.”

Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray has announced that members of the town’s Creative Writers’ Workshop will be holding a reading of their original works on Wednesday, June 11th from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Merrick Theatre and Center for the Arts. “The senior residents who have participated in the Creative Writers’ Workshop will be sharing their compositions with the community during this presentation,” said Murray. “The life experiences, imaginations and emotions of workshop participants have served to inspire the writers to compile these short stories, poems and memoirs.” The public is invited to attend this free event which will be held at the Merrick Theatre and Center for the Arts, located at 2222 Hewlett Avenue in Merrick. An informal coffee hour will follow the forum. “The Creative Writers’ Workshop has inspired many artistic seniors to fulfill a lifelong ambition to write over the past 26 years,” said Councilwoman Angie

Fourth- and fifth-grade students at Kramer Lane Elementary School in the Bethpage Union Free School District held their annual science fair and presentations for the younger students. As a culmination to their science curriculum, the students utilized the scientific method in small

groups to conduct an experiment of their choice. Projects included what food their dog would most prefer, whether different cans of soda sink or float and the perfect popping time and temperature for popcorn. The fourth- and fifthgraders first presented their completed projects

to the school’s second- and third-graders, and then stood with their projects at the annual fair for parents and guests. Presenting the project to their peers allows students to practice their public speaking skills, and prepares the younger children for what to expect at the higher grades.

Rowing Toward A Championship

This weekend, I am competing in the National Championship for rowing. As the culmination of four years of hard work, this regatta marks the end of my rowing career. Although I started as a very poor athlete, I grew to love the sport. Now, I’m representing St. John the Baptist in the Varsity Quad, along with three of my best friends. I’m also competing in the Varsity Pair. This year proved to be one of the most productive in recent years, as we have six boats competing in this national championship. With so many entries, I believe we have put St. John’s on the map, as a force to be reckoned with

in the realm of high school crew. With any luck, some of our boats can bring home some hardware, as we build a dynasty that will continue for future athletes. When I entered as a freshman, my team was mediocre. Now, as I leave, my team is outstanding. The hard work put in by both the athletes and the coaches, combined with significant involvement from the parents, helped to solidify SJB as a force both on the water and in training. I like to think that I have made a positive difference on this team - and maybe I have - but the opportunity to compete on the highest stage available was earned

by hard work on the part of the entire team. Perhaps our impressive year will lead to advances in the future. With any luck, our bid for a national title ends in a medal. Even if it does not, I can honestly say that my four years as a St. John’s rower have left me a better athlete and a better person. This team has left an imprint on me that will last forever. I will never forget my coaches, my teammates or the memories we’ve formed along the way. I started the season as a substitute, and now I’m on a boat, rowing toward a national championship, with a group of friends I would not trade for the world.

Staff Honored At Luncheon

Village Students Shine On May 15th, Village Elementary School students took to the stage at H.B.T. Middle School to entertain and delight the audience. The evening started with 15 students in the String Ensemble, conducted by Mrs. Carrella, performing Allegro Gustoso and Eleanor Rigby. They were joined by the 43 Senior Orchestra members who performed stellar renditions of Bass in Space, Sourwood Mountain, Sailor’s Song

and Margaritaville. Following the orchestra was a chorus of 86 fourth and fifth graders, led by Mrs. Schwartz, singing their hearts out to Yo Vivo Cantando, When I Close My Eyes and Some Nights. There were many beautiful solo performances woven in among these songs. The evening continued with Mr. Biener conducting the 42 students in the Senior Band as they played Ascension and Scirocco. The concert concluded

with Mr. Biener bringing out 21 more students who make up the Village School Band. They skillfully performed Fanfare and March, Aruba Tuba and Any Way You Want It. The evening ended on a bittersweet note since it was Mr. Biener’s last Village concert. While they will miss him next year, they wish him all the best in his future endeavors.

The Bethpage High School Marine Fitness Team recently traveled to San Diego, where they trained with the Marines and participated in a national competition. The boys team placed first in nationals and the girls team came in second place. They competed

against approximately 20 other teams from across the United States. This is only the second time since the 1960s that the Bethpage team has won nationals, winning for the last time in 1998. Marine Fitness became a national competition in 1966 and was started by a

general who came out of the Marine Corps. Marine Fitness is loosely based on the Marine Corps physical fitness test and due to Bethpage’s close ties to the Marines, the team has attire that bears the Marine logo.

National Champions

The Village PTA recently hosted a spectacular luncheon to thank the entire staff for their hard work and dedication to the school and its students. More than two dozen volunteers treated teachers and administrators alike to a scrumptious Hawaiian Luau. Everyone feasted on

delicious wraps, salads, fruit, and more. There was even a very special station featuring Japanese, Korean, Chinese, and other Asian-themed dishes generously prepared and served by several Village parents. The PTA also took time to honor specific staff members who really made

a difference during the 2013-2014 school year including Mrs. Potvin and Mrs. Pendrick. A world of thanks goes to committee chairs Andrea DiCostanza and Kim Rampanelli for spearheading such a lovely event and to all the volunteers who helped set up, serve, and donate their time.

The Ronald McDonald House of Long Island opened its doors in New Hyde Park in 1986 and offers a “home away from home” for almost 1,000 families each year. In December, eight members of the student

council, chaperoned by their advisers, participated in the Little Hands Baking Program and presented a check to the organization for $1,400 from numerous fundraising efforts, along with toys for the children of the house donated by local families. Most recently, nine faculty members visited the RMDH with boxes of linens and various cleaning supplies from the house

wish list. All the supplies were collected as part of the student council’s Spring Cleaning drive. As always, the generosity of Bethpage families overwhelmed and touched the staff at the house. Congratulations! 2014 JFK staff stayed to cook Long Island Hot Stove dinner for the Meals from Memorial Day Challenge the Heart Program. Sixty Champions residents came home to a • 8u - Long Island lavish barbecue prepared Lightning with love and well wishes. • 9u - Plainedge Red

Devils Black • 10u - Bethpage Eagles Gold • 11u - Bethpage Eagles Gold • 12u - Bellmore Heat • 13u - Nassau County

Saints • 14u - NC Blazers • 15u - HC Hawkeyes • 16u - Southshore Chiefs • 18u - Williston Park Patriots

On July 19th, friends and supporters of the Whaling Museum & Education Center in Cold Spring Harbor will host a Hawaiian Luau overlooking Huntington Harbor. The event, which will be the only major fundraiser for the Museum this year, will feature an authentic Hawaiian buffet with roasted pig and a signature cocktail, live entertainment and breathtaking views of Huntington Harbor. Honorees & Hosts, Jim & Yvette Loughlin will welcome guests to

their residence in hopes of raising considerable funding for the Museum’s unique education and summer camp programs. In addition to normal programming, the Museum will offer several scholarships to summer camp and will work with local agencies to provide an educational museum experience to children that may not otherwise have the opportunity to attend camp in a Museum setting. Also being honored at this event is Pacific Whale Foundation Executive Director, Greg Kaufman.

Mr. Kaufman is worldrenowned as a pioneer in whale research and an advocate in marine ecotourism (www. pacificwhale.org). His support will allow us to continue the Museum’s mission to explore the ever-changing relationship between humans and whales through inquiry-based education and interpretation of artifacts that emphasize the cultural, scientific and environmental significance of Long Island and the Sea. The event, which will run from 7 to 11 p.m. is advance sales only. Tickets can be purchased online at www.cshwhalingmuseum. org/luau or by calling 631.367.3418, ext. 10. The cost per ticket is $140 per person. For more information regarding journal ads, sponsorships or raffle donations, please call Trish Rongo at 631.367.3418.
