Math-A-Thon Fundraiser
F
or the fifth year in a row, students at Pasadena Elementary School in the Plainview-Old Bethpage School District held a Math-a-Thon to raise vital funds for the children at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Participating students completed activities in a Common Core Learning Standards for Mathematics workbook in exchange for donations. The Math-a-Thon fostered mathematics education while teaching students a lesson in giving back to those in need.

Shark Tournament Star Island Yacht Club has announced that it will hold its 29th Annual Shark Tournament on June 18th20th. This annual Father’s Day event has become a Montauk tradition and a major happening, with over 100 boats participating annually, drawing thousands of spectators. Cash prizes will be awarded for the heaviest shark in the tournament and the heaviest shark for each day. The top three prizes will also be awarded for the heaviest mako, heaviest blue shark and heaviest shark of another species. In addition to this outstanding competition, all sportsmen can contribute to the study of the shark by tagging and releasing sharks that do not meet strict weight requirements. In 2014, more than
$485,000 in cash, prizes, and trophies were paid out. Over the course of two days, 117 boats and 702 anglers brought in 33 fish, including ten Makos, 14 Threshers and nine Blue Sharks. The heaviest shark was a 377-pound Thresher landed by Ed Groppe aboard Captain David Walters’ “The Reel Deal.” Of the sharks that were weighed in, more than 750 pounds of edible shark meat was donated to the Long Island Council of Churches’ food pantry to help feed those in need. The entry fee is $1,250 per boat. For sports fishermen who would like to get in on the competition but do not own a boat, the Star Island Yacht Club Charter Boat fishing fleet is available for hire for either one day or both days of the tournament. Each of Star Island’s boats can accommodate up to six
anglers. Star Island wishes to advise all prospective participants that, as per Environmental Conservation Law 130338, New York State law now requires that all shark tournament participants use non-stainless steel non-offset circle hooks exclusively. Dockage is available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Transient rates for the tournament are $5.50 per foot for up to 59 feet, $6.00 per foot for 60 feet and up. Utilities are $30 for 30-amp and single-cord 50-amp service and $50 for two-cord 50-amp service. In addition, Star Island now has high-speed fuel pumps. Tickets Anyone? By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Summer concert season is upon us! I have to admit, I went a little ticket crazy this time around. The instant the Jones Beach schedule was posted, I eagerly scanned it for shows I wanted to see, and then scoured the internet for any special pre-sales, Groupons, etc. that I could find. The problem – well, a temporary inconvenience, as the case may be – is that some summer tours seem to be announced earlier each year and, while there are plenty eager to attend, few people are willing, or able, to commit to such expenses in the middle of Christmas shopping. Me, I ignore such … what’s the word … logic? Rather, I
am of the philosophy that, if you want to do something badly enough, why should you wait for tickets to be sold out and appear on resale sites for triple the price? Spontaneity is key – just press that “purchase” button and worry about minor details like cost and finding a concert companion later! Of course, needless to say, after realizing that I had accumulated tickets to about seven or eight shows over these next several months, I began to panic. Slightly. Trying to remember who likes what types of music, the corresponding dates, times, locations, the cost factor … it’s a bit like being an event planner, desperately trying to fill each slot appropriately. The ultimate
goal, of course, is to not find myself solo the day of the show, contemplating a.) going by myself, b.) attempting to resell the tickets, or c.) worst of all, losing the money laid out and not going at all. A truly lose/lose situation. By the time you read this, I will have attended concert number one (guest confirmed, tickets paid in full), with numbers two and three to follow shortly in the coming week. A bit of overkill, I know. But that’s what summer is all about – enjoying the great outdoors with family and friends, taking in some music, film, culture … whatever the case may be. This is what we look forward to all year. Let’s not forget to savor it now that it’s arrived.

More than 400 attendees from the Long Island medical and corporate community came out to the American Museum of Armor in Bethpage on Friday, May 8th, to attend the American Heart Association’s 52nd Annual Long Island Heart Ball. The Long Island Heart Ball is an annual social event held to recognize outstanding accomplishments of individuals and companies in the area of cardiovascular science and leadership. This year’s event was chaired by Allan H. Cohen, Esq., Managing Partner, Long Island, Nixon Peabody LLP. The 52nd Annual Heart Ball honored Scott L. New Pole Dedicated Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District’s (POB) Parkway Elementary School recently dedicated its new “Peace Pole” to veterans and first responders in honor of Memorial Day. The entire school dressed in patriotic wear to honor and personally thank their local veterans and hometown heroes. The eight-foot, square resin pole stands in front of the school and reads “May Peace Prevail on Earth” in various languages including English,
Spanish, Hebrew, Chinese, Korean, Italian, Greek and Urdu. Students read the inscription in the many languages represented during the ceremony. Veterans of the Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 5942 in Plainview, NY, Veteran Joseph Varrone, POB Parkway Elementary School’s Principal Ronelle Hershkowitz, Nassau County Legislator Judy Jacobs, New York State Assemblyman Charles Lavine, POB Board of Education members Ginger Lieberman and
Seth Greenberg, POB Assistant Superintendent Jill Gierasch and representatives from the POB Volunteer Fire Department and Nassau County Police from the 2nd Precinct were all in attendance. Several of those guests addressed the students as speakers. The Peace Pole was purchased by Parkway Elementary School as a symbol for the school’s commitment to teaching students to honor and thank members of the armed forces.

Assemblyman Lavine is one of the few NY State Assemblyman who are not supporting the Bill. Syosset High School was the site of an interactive and powerful program on May 28th designed to discourage kids from making poor decisions behind the wheel. Titled “Arrive Alive,” the traveling awareness tour is run by UNITE, a health and wellness nonprofit organization aimed at encouraging safety and healthy choices. The
organization was brought onto the high school’s campus by the Syosset PTA, which runs similar programs in the district throughout the year. The Arrive Alive Tour featured simulated and interactive exercises that encourage students to realize the dangers involved when driving either impaired or distracted. Students got
behind the wheel of a truck wearing virtual-reality goggles and simulated either driving drunk or texting while driving. Students learned that any distractions could make a difference and ultimately lead to tragedy. Prior to the outdoor exercise, students were shown an eye-opening video in the auditorium.

With Zeus retiring, sixthgraders in Monica Klein’s social studies classes at John F. Kennedy Middle School in the Bethpage School District decided which god; goddess or hero would become the new ruler of Olympus. For the seventh
consecutive year, each student dressed the part of their chosen god and gave a speech that highlighted why they deserved to be the new ruler of Olympus. This unique activity reinforces the curriculum on ancient Greek history, as well creating persuasive

Scholarship Recipients The Long Island-based credit union NEFCU has awarded 82 students from high schools across Long Island each with a $500 voucher to use toward their college education, as part of its annual Making a Difference Scholarship program. In total, NEFCU granted $41,000 to graduating seniors from local high schools across Long Island. The individual winners will be announced

Students at Old Country Road Elementary School in the Hicksville Public School District participated in STEM Day, which promoted problem solving, language production, collaboration and teambuilding through science, technology, engineering and math-related activities. The STEM activities were aligned with critical thinking skills students are learning. One activity
tasked students with using gum drops and toothpicks to build a sturdy dome which would be strengthtested. In another activity, students used aluminum foil to build a boat that would be able to support the weight of multiple pennies. Students also participated in an activity that tasked them with solving a math problem created on the floor as a giant puzzle, while iPads
were used by students to research future STEMrelated careers and athome experiments. STEM Day reinforced the importance of developing science, technology, engineering and mathrelated skills, and encouraged students to begin considering careers in those fields.

Ninety-five students at Hicksville Middle School in the Hicksville Public School District were inducted into the National Junior Honor Society at a candlelit ceremony. Students earned the honor and privilege of being named to the prestigious group based on their academic prowess
and commitment to service and leadership. Interim Superintendent of Schools Dr. Carl Bonuso commended the students for all of their hard work, and also encouraged them to continue their displays of excellence. Principal Mara Jorisch administered the pledge of the Verisage Chapter, and NJHS

Seven student members of the Plainview-Old Bethpage School District’s John F. Kennedy High School Varsity Track team recently broke division records for their performances this season. In the Distance Medley Relay, students Troy
Benson, Josh Wicker, Alex Hilbert and Sam Iryami beat the previous record by 25 seconds. In the Sprint Medley Relay, Troy Benson, Tom Lee, Brandon Park and Kyle Sansaricq beat the previous record by five seconds with their time of 45.5 seconds.
Finally, in addition to being a part of the recordbeating groups, sophomore student Troy Benson beat the individual record for the 300 meter sprint by .5 seconds with his time of 40.7 seconds.
Italian Bingo Members of the Plainview-Old Bethpage School District’s John F. Kennedy High School Italian Honor Society recently visited the local Atria Senior Living Center for a round of Italian Bingo. Known as Tombola, students taught the seniors
how to say “ambo,” “terno,” “quaderno,” “quinto” and finally “tombola” when they were able to cover a certain amount of numbers on their boards. Students helped seniors learn the Italian numbers so they knew which numbers to mark when they were called out by one of the

Student Elected As Officers
Officers during the State SkillsUSA Leadership and Skills Championships, held in Syracuse last month. These three students will represent New York State at the National Leadership and Skills Conference in Louisville, KY this June. Jack Shea, a Barry Tech plumbing student from the Lynbrook UFSD, was elected Area VI Vice President; Michenka Juin, a Barry Tech nurse assisting student form the Baldwin UFSD, was named State Historian; and Leeann Turrisi, a Barry Tech veterinary science
New York State. As National Officers, these three students will attend a number of training sessions that will prepare them to serve as members of the National Officer Team at the June conference. Following the nationals, Jack Shea and Michenka Juin will have additional training opportunities including summer sessions and attendance at the September Washington Leadership Conference. The national competition is the culmination of a series of events that

SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry leaders working together to prepare high school and college students to become leaders in the business world. The program helps establish industry standards for jobskill training and instills a respect for community service in its participants.
