Used by all of the classes for education purposes, the garden is located on the kindergarten playground, first established last year. Students maintain it during the summer as part of the 21st Century Scholar Program. The garden includes flowered plants and vegetables, as well as a sensory section.

Kindergartners at A.P. Willits and Baylis elementary schools in Syosset added an engineering component to their recent studies of animal the life cycles, showing great care and craftsmanship in designing and building “Super Coops” for baby chicks.

Leading up to this part of the project, students placed chick eggs in an incubator and anxiously awaited their hatch.

Each student learned basic design and building concepts and followed a plan in creating their chick Super Coops. Along the way they thought about what chicks needed to survive, then collected various materials to place in their coops.

Once the chicks were born, they were welcomed into their happy, habitable and highly creative new homes.

Under this new program, spearheaded and organized by Town Councilmembers Rebecca M. Alesia and Anthony D. Macagnone, residents will be able to drop off unwanted cardboard to be recycled on Saturday mornings, beginning June 4th.

“This new program will not only generate less solid waste for the Town, but recycling cardboard also reduces the demand for new paper, thereby saving trees and decreasing the amount of pollution generated in new paper production,” Councilwoman Alesia

Students in all grade levels from Pasadena Elementary School in the Plainview-Old Bethpage School District finished out a week-long celebration of spirit with their annual field day.

Students competed on teams, wearing their school colors, in a number of relay races and activities to foster school spirit, teamwork and fun.

Activities featured at this year’s event included a scooter relay, run-for-fun activity, “any which way” race, tug of strength, potato and spoon relay, football relay, “big ball partner roll” event and a “looney lax scoop” relay.

The students competed in front of a cheering section of fellow classmates, faculty, staff, friends and family members.

Showing their Spirit Field Day is part of the school’s annual “Spirit Week,” during which the students take part in different themed days and activities to raise school spirit. The week’s themes included a visit from the Harlem Wizards, a mismatch day, pajama day and a vote to name the school’s pet turtles.

great stuff for a great cause.

This past Memorial Day weekend, the Navy’s Blue Angels returned to the Island for their annual turn as one of the Jones Beach Air Show’s featured attractions. Even though it’s just a short drive down Ocean Parkway, my family and I have never managed to get out there to witness the spectacle up close and in person. Too much traffic, too many people, too much of a hassle…

This year, though, I realized that the planes would be practicing right around the corner at Republic Airport during the week leading up to the show.

And so, on Friday afternoon, a friend and I made a point of taking a ride down to the Airport Plaza shopping center to see if we could catch a glimpse. A glimpse? Try witnessing all six of the planes whizzing overhead and whoknows-what speed, close enough so that we could read the numbers on them! What a sight!

If only I had my camera, I thought.

Well, after that close call, I decided to make it my mission to get a shot of them flying to or from the air show over the weekend, since I knew they would cross over my house on their flight down to the beach. Saturday afternoon, as I heard them approach, I ran out with my camera – only to catch the cloud of dust they had left in their wake.

Okay, I thought, I’ll just wait here on the deck – listening to the simulcast on the radio – until I hear them wrapping up their routine. Then, all I have to do is aim my camera for the sky and I can’t miss them!

Easier said than done.

I saw them coming, all right.

The problem was it’s a little hard to frame something moving at hundreds of miles an hour in your camera lens before it’s passed you by. I managed to snap one shot as they approached, which, after the camera’s natural delay, resulted in a rather fuzzy shot of the planes whizzing right out of the frame.

There’s always tomorrow, I thought.

The next morning, I drove

down to the local town beach and waited, poised for the approach.

Sure enough, I saw the HC-130 slowly making its way south, a sure sign that the six Blue Angels were not far behind. And then… out of the clouds they came – all six, flying in perfect formation.

And again, I was only able to get just one shot before I lost track of the formation.

I followed their flight into the distance, where I was actually able to view most of the theatrics which followed, albeit from a great distance. I imagine it was much better up close, but hey – not a bad seat on my beach either!

I must have stood there for a solid 30 minutes, watching the back and forth, up and down, looping motion of the jets, until at last, they began their return trip to Republic.

This time, I got it. One...two… three shots as they came closer and closer – still a little blurred, but sharp against the clear blue sky. Finally!

As they flew off into the distance, I heard one bystander mumble, “There they go – our tax dollars at work.”

But she was smiling.

Under this new drop-off program, the following can be recycled: corrugated and paperboard, also known as boxboard. Both types of cardboard are

acceptable.

Common types of corrugated boxes are those used for moving and shipping, appliances, electronics, office paper, etc.

Paperboard is commonly used for cereal and other food boxes,

shoe boxes, soda and beverage cartons, tissue boxes, department store gift boxes, etc.

“The Town of Oyster Bay is committed to providing high quality, environmentally sound

Vying for the Team Congratulations to Syosset High School sophomore Wanlin Li, who tied for the fourth highest score in the country on the United States of America Junior Mathematical Olympiad exam. As a result, Wanlin is one of just 50 students nationwide to be invited to the Mathematical Olympiad Summer Program (MOSP) with a chance to qualify for the U.S. Math Olympiad Team and participate in the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO).

The MOSP is a monthlong intensive summer program designed

to prepare students for possible participation in the IMO. Full days of classes and problem sets provide students with thorough preparation in several important areas of mathematics traditionally emphasized at the IMO. At the end of camp, the top 12 performers will be tapped for the U.S. Math Olympic Team to compete against the most talented high school students from over 100 nations. This year, the IMO will be held in Hong Kong, July 6th-16th.

Wanlin was among only 230 students in the U.S. and Canada to be chosen to take the

USAJMO exam, the second consecutive year she has been asked to participate in this prestigious exam, which qualified her for the MOSP. Additionally, Wanlin recently finished in second place at the New York State Mathematics League competition in Penfield, New York. She also won a silver medal at the Long Island Math Fair, held at Hofstra University earlier this spring. Her math coaches are Kim Dwyer and Erin O’Rourke. Nancy Levin is her current math teacher.
