Give The Gift Of Life By Donating Blood

With hospitals facing a nationwide blood shortage, Oyster Bay Town Councilman Steve Labriola invites residents to attend a Blood Collection Drive on Tuesday, June 27th from 1pm to 7pm at the Hicksville Athletic Center, located at 167 S. Broadway in Hicksville.

Councilman Labriola stated, “Blood supplies are critically needed for local hospitals to meet the demand and continue saving lives. Please consider participating in this blood drive to help bolster our blood banks and ensure as many people as possible can be helped. Together, we can give the gift of life though a simple blood donation.”

Appointments are preferred for the Town’s Blood Drive. To qualify as a donor, a person must be between the ages of 17 and 75 years old (16 with parental permission and 76 or older with a doctor’s note), weigh at least 110 pounds and not have

donated blood within the last 56 days. Anyone who received a tattoo within the past 12 months is ineligible to donate. It is recommended that donors eat well (low fat) and drink fluids in the days before the Blood Drive. Additionally, all donors will receive a voucher for a free Blizzard at Dairy Queen.

Councilman Labriola added, “It’s quick, easy, and safe to donate a single pint of blood which can save up to three lives. Donating blood at the Hicksville Athletic Center, is an incredible way for all of us to pitch in and give back, to help ease the burden of our Healthcare Heroes as they continue to provide lifesaving efforts.”

Autism And Children

According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed four times as often in boys than it is in girls. Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of

12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. In such instances, the NAA notes that children lose the words they previously learned. Incidences of autism appear to be on the rise, though the reasons for that remain unclear. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of autism had risen to one in every 59 children by 2018. That’s twice as great as the rate in 2004, when the CDC reported one in 125 children were diagnosed with autism.

At least two $1,000.00 Scholarships will be awarded to students who have had personal experience with homelessness. Students must be a current resident of Nassau or Suffolk County (unless already enrolled in college or trade school elsewhere, with a previous residence in Nassau or Suffolk Counties), and have attended elementary, middle and/or high school in Nassau or Suffolk Counties.

Applicants must enroll in a full-time undergraduate course of study or other licensed vocational program no later than the fall session of 2024.

Complete packages must be received by 12:00 p.m. on Friday, June 15 and must include each of the following:

In the early 2000s, the Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind, founded in 1946, recognized not only the growing need for specialized service dogs that could help wounded service-members, but also that aging veterans could also benefit from a specially trained service dog. America’s VetDogs was then founded as a program of the Guide Dog Foundation and later became an independent 501(c)3 nonprofit. In 2015, first responders with work-related disabilities were added to the individuals served.

Today, the organization supports those they serve with an uncompromised commitment to excellence, from highly empathetic and certified trainers to meticulously constructed curriculum delivered during a two-week, inresidence training program, followed by a lifetime of aftercare support. It costs more than $50,000 to breed, raise, train and place one assistance dog, but services are always provided free to the individuals served.

The dogs they train are taught specialized tasks and skills such as retrieval of dropped items, positional cues to extend their handler’s personal space when in a crowded setting, counterbalance, nightmare interruption, pressing buttons

Options For Community Living, Inc Receives $150,000 Housing For Everyone Grant

Options for Community Living, Inc., a nonprofit organization providing residential programs and support services for vulnerable people on Long Island, has been awarded a $150,000 Housing for Everyone grant from the TD Charitable Foundation, the charitable giving arm of TD Bank, America’s Most Convenient Bank®. Options is one of 37 non-profit organizations selected from more than 450 applicants to receive a Housing for Everyone grant as part of the TD Charitable Foundation’s signature grant initiative that has helped support organizations that are focused on providing affordable housing and affordable housing services since 2005.

In recent years the housing affordability crisis has continued to be a financial burden on families. As individuals and families across the country struggle with inflation and an exponential rise in rental costs, affordable housing providers face increased hardship given the growing demand for affordable rental units and emergency rental assistance.

The grant will support property maintenance, repairs, and renovations to multiple affordable

supportive housing units many of which have been in service for over 20 years.

“Options serves more than 2,000 Long Islanders each year,” said CEO, Yolanda Robano-Gross.

“With an affordable rent and services, our supportive housing programs help formerly homeless, disabled

work or school improving their economic situation. Children perform better in school and have more opportunities, often ending the cycle of homelessness and poverty. Thank you, TD Bank for responding to this significant community need.”

Thousands Gather to Hear World-Renowned Spiritual Master, Sant Rajinder Singh Ji Maharaj’s Message of Peace

Chicago, D.C., and New York are not connected geographically, but during the past few weeks, Sant Rajinder Singh Ji Maharaj connected them spiritually.

When in the States, the spiritual Master and acclaimed author can usually be found at the Science of Spirituality International Meditation Center in Lisle, Illinois, giving talks and teaching meditation on the inner Light and Sound. He also travels throughout the world offering programs on spirituality. From May 19 through May 22, the East Coast was awash with his positive message of peace, unity, and hope. On May 19, he presented talks in the D.C. area highlighting his new Amazon best-selling book, Detox the Mind.

May 20th brought him to Long Island where he gave a series of talks, and in-depth meditation sessions at the Science of Spirituality Meditation Center in Amityville, NY. People came from throughout the country, Canada, and parts of

Europe to hear him talk on human unity, inner wisdom, and the transformational power of meditation. New York saw the Amityville Center overflowing as 2,000 people came to hear and see the spiritual Master. They filled the huge sanctuary, spilling out into an expansive overflow tent on the beautiful flower-filled grounds. Video monitors carried the program into as many nooks and corners as possible.

Saturday evening, he delighted the Indian community by giving a special talk in Hindi. It was also the East Coast book release of Abode of Light, a magnificent translation by Sant Rajinder Singh Ji of the mystical poetry of award-winning poet, Sant Darshan Singh Ji Maharaj. This treasured book was translated into English from the original Urdu so that modern readers and posterity could discover the roadmap to experiencing peace and joy. Among the very special guests at the event included: Inderpal Singh Dhall, president and chairman of the Guru

Gobind Singh Sikh Center in Plainview, NY; Maulana Syed Rehan Naqvi, PhD, resident scholar at the Shah-E-Najaf Islamic Center in Brentwood; and Dilip Chauhan, Deputy Commissioner for International Affairs, New York City. All reflected on the healing power of poetry, while Sant Rajinder Singh Ji’s universal message of love poured out to embrace the entire audience. As SOS is an international organization, all talks were available in English, and Spanish.

On Sunday afternoon the topic of his talk in English was, “Peace through Detoxing the Mind.” Sant Rajinder Singh Ji spoke about the importance of learning to let go of habits and emotions that do not support a healthy lifestyle. He emphasized how meditation can help clear out these ‘toxins’ so we can enjoy a life with less stress, experience a greater sense of joy and purpose, and be able to connect with our inner self. An indepth meditation session followed.

On Monday, May 22, Sant Rajinder Singh Ji Maharaj, head of Science of Spirituality, received a special citation from the city of New York by its mayor, the Honorable Eric Adams, for his commitment to fostering peace and interfaith harmony while inspiring diverse people worldwide on their paths to spiritual growth. Meeting at the historic New York City Hall, Sant Rajinder Singh Ji Maharaj and the Honorable Eric Adams were joined by the spiritual Master’s wife, Respected Mata Rita Ji, son Dr. Kunwarjit Singh Duggal, delegates, and several of the mayor’s senior advisors, including Dilip Chauhan, the Deputy Commissioner for International Affairs, New York City.
