Syosset High School math teacher John Chae was recently honored by Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) as part of the Distinguished Teacher Recognition Program. He was nominated for the award by former Syosset High School student Laura Weintraub.

Each year, RIT O u t s t a n d i n g Undergraduate Scholar

Award recipients are given the opportunity to nominate high school or community college teachers that have had a profound impact on their academic career. “Mr. Chae has been supportive and helpful in fostering my love for math and sparking a new interest in computing,” Laura stated in her nomination submission. “Mr. Chae’s

ability to push me toward computing has led me to purse a degree in cybersecurity with a focus in software development.”

This is the second year in a row a Syosset High School teacher has been awarded by RIT, with math teacher Mike Cascone receiving the award in 2018.

Free Sunscreen Available at Town Pools and Beaches Town of Oyster Bay Councilman Steve Labriola announced that the Town will place sunscreen dispensers at local pool and beach facilities in advance of the summer season. This are being provided free-of-charge for Town residents.

“Skin cancer is a national health issue, and prolonged exposure to ultraviolet light from the son is the leading preventable cause of skin cancer,” Councilman Labriola said. “Through the introduction of 16 dispensers at various beach and pool locations, the

Town will help residents find a convenient way to help prevent this chronic disease.”

Dispensers will be set up in cooperation with Syosset Hospital/ Plainview HospitalNorthwell Health. In addition to 16 dispensers, the Town will work with the health group to set up an awareness program for residents to help promote a mindfulness of the potential dangers of increased sun exposure.

Ethical Sharing Students in Bethpage High School’s Ethics Club visited Monica Klein’s John F. Kennedy Middle School sixth grade social studies classes to host the fifth annual Ethics Socratic Circle on May 23.

The Ethics Club members spoke to five classes and presented an open-ended question to spark comfortable conversations.

Students listened closely to the

comments of their peers, discussed their own views and held an open dialogue with no right or wrong answers. The visit followed the sixth graders’ recent completion of a philosophy lesson covering Socrates, Plato and Aristotle that was part of an ancient Greece unit.

“It was my hope to promote ethics and academic integrity among all Bethpage students,”

said Mrs. Klein. “I also hope that the sixth graders may become to inspired to join the Ethics Club when they join the high school in a few years.”

Mrs. Klein thanked seniors Soham Maiti and Jessica O’Keefe, juniors Ujala Dar, Liz Freedman, Erica Marciante and Nicole Zacchie and freshman Bernardo Jimenenz for taking the time to engage and educate her classes.

through participation in early American craft activities such as broom making, blacksmithing and pioneer construction.

The group also explored the property’s nature trail systems. The program helps students to develop an appreciation of the

The district thanks the BOCES program coordinators for allowing the Argonauts to take a step back in time with these informative activities.

While speaking with Robyn, she shared a great story about a routine visit with her dental hygienist, Sue. Sue was explaining how arthritis was really becoming a problem in her hands. After a short discussion with Sue, Robyn challenged her to cut out all dairy for a month. After only a few days Sue called Robyn to share she was already having less pain and was now fully committed to making it through the dairy-free month.

Through the month Sue made a few appointments with Robyn and made a few other small changes to her diet. Not long after that first month Sue’s arthritic pains were gone, she lost 30 pounds, reduced her bad cholesterol and her blood pressure normalized. All welcomed benefits but completely unexpected

Kaitlyn Hom, a Syosset High School student, has received a gold medal in the Scholastic Art Award competition for young artists and writers. As a gold medalist, she is in top the 1% of all 340,000 participants and joins a talented group of alumni artists.

Her artwork “Saturated” was selected based on the quality of its technical skill, originality, and the voice or vision it communicated.

It will be displayed in the Parson School of Design and exhibited around the country for the next two years. It will also be recognized through its exhibition on the online

galleries at artandwriting. org on the scholastic website.

The scholastic art award competition was founded in 1923 by Maurice R. Robinson in hopes of highlighting artistic talent in the US and inspiring young artists.

Today, the scholastic art award competition works with the alliance for young artists and writers, never straying from their mission to provide teens with opportunities to exhibit their artwork, receive scholarships, and have their work published. The Alliance also offers programs such as the Art.Write.

Now.Tour, the National Student Poets Program, the Scholastic Awards Summer Workshops and Scholastic Awards Summer Scholarships programs to support young artists.

Kaitlyn’s artwork advanced from the regional level as a gold key winner and was then selected as a first place gold medal winner on the national level. She joins a talented group of past winners, including artists Andy Warhol, Robert Indiana, Kay WalkingStick, and many more.

Third Place At State Comp Bethpage UFSD student Alexander Dupre, a Veterinary Science student at Nassau BOCES Barry Tech, took third place at the New York State SkillsUSA Leadership and Skills Championships, held in Syracuse earlier this spring. He earned the spot for his outstanding performance in the Animal Careers category.

Alexander participated in a series of timed events related to his course of study at Barry Tech, as well as in contests in leadership and professional development.

The state competition is one in a national series of events SkillsUSA sponsors as part of its mission to provide our country with a competitive, skilled workforce.

provide our country with a competitive, skilled workforce. SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry leaders working together to prepare high school and college students to become leaders in the business world.

Collecting Crayons The “Thoughtful Thursday” monthly series continued at the Bethpage Union Free School District’s Central Boulevard Elementary School as students learned about the Crayon Initiative on May 23.

Created by Bryan Ware in 2011, the Crayon Initiative collects donated crayons from restaurants, schools and homes from across the country. Once gathered, the original crayons are

melted, remanufactured and distributed to art programs at children’s hospitals across the United States.

To help with this cause, students at Central Boulevard will be collecting used crayons from June 3-14.

This month’s Thoughtful Thursday focused on decorating collection boxes as well as making signs to promote the schoolwide donation drive.

Patricia Tierney’s second grade class welcomed the help of Bethpage High School students as they created signs. The second graders buddied with the high school students to illustrate designs and text to promote their cause.

Central Boulevard looks forward to collecting donated crayons to help with this thoughtful charity.

Students from Syosset High School, H.B. Thompson and South Woods Middle School competed at the Al Kalfus Long Island Math Fair held at Hofstra University and brought back an impressive 37 medals, including 11 gold, 14 sliver and 12 bronze medals.

Syosset High School junior Lance Lampert won the prestigious Alice Griswold Award for the best Gold Medal paper in Nassau County.

The Al Kalfus Long Island Math Fair is sponsored by the Nassau County Association of Mathematics Supervisors (NCAMS).

Students conducted extensive mathematical research on a topic of their choice, prepared a research paper and presented to judges from academia and local industries.

New Ground is a non-profit organization that helps to break the cycle of homelessness right here in Nassau and Suffolk counties.

This organization began all from the vision of an educator that was committed to providing a safe haven for those living in poverty.

This educator saw that shelters were only providing a short-term fix to a problem that needed a real, lasting solution. After envisioning an organization that provided a holistic suite of support services while empowering participants to help themselves, she founded New Ground in 1991 to do just that.

New Ground, based in Levittown, offers Veterans and families the following main programs to truly help them conquer homelessness: their Long Term Housing Program, their JumpStart Program and their Veterans Program. Their services include Adult Workshops, Career Development, Education Advocacy, Education Assistance, Financial Literacy, Reading All-Stars, Special Memories and Tutoring.

New Ground’s JumpStart Program launched in 2012 to expand these critical services to additional homeless families on their wait-list for the Long Term Housing Program. This Program is open to any homeless families, not just Veterans, and is intended to give families a jump-start on accomplishing their goals. When these families later transition into the Long Term Housing Program, they are well on their way toward realizing the steps needed to secure an independent future.

A primary social worker is assigned to all families in both of these programs once they start with the organization. New Ground social

The New Ground Veterans Program is another very important part to their organization. Homeless Veterans can get placed in reduced cost housing and be provided with intensive social work and education services by New Ground to assist them with achieving goals in the areas of employment, financial literacy, education, career development, parenting, basic life skills, education advocacy and more. In 2016 their services were expanded so they can serve an even greater number of Veteran households. Through collaboration with the Northport VA Center, New Ground began offering their programs to over 400 homeless Veteran households in their Veteran Affairs Supportive Housing Program.

Since opening their doors, New Ground has seen over 80% of the families they have served “graduate” from their programs self sufficient and into permanent stable housing.

New Ground empowers children, parents and Veterans to achieve their goals so that they can secure a brighter future for generations to come!

New Ground is a huge help to the homeless community on Long Island and is there for those in need. Their Long Term Housing Program combines affordable housing with New Ground’s intensive services. Currently this includes a home in Huntington with two homeless Veteran families, a home in Bethpage under renovations and plans to add more housing units. For 3-5 years, New Ground provides all the needed educational, vocational and counseling services to the family members living in this housing, as well as basic needs and general support. Residents also take time with a social worker and put together a plan of how they can reach their goals. All residents pay an affordable rent and although New Ground assists them with various costs and hurdles they may face, they truly get the feeling of being a responsible homeowner.
