There are many Memorial Day weekend traditions that people enjoy. Most of them tend to involve barbecues and beaches, bathing suits and sunbathing. Few take the time to truly appreciate the meaning of the holiday itself. I’ve written in the past of attending the annual service which takes place at Calverton National Cemetery, a mere two hours taken out of the weekend to pay respects to those who have come before us and sacrificed so much for this nation. This brought to mind another, perhaps less traditional, “ceremony” which my grandfather and great uncle used to enact each Memorial Day, and then again at Labor Day. Both veterans themselves, they had held on to their service uniforms and, ill-fitting as they were, would dig them out and don bits and pieces of them each year to take part in
the annual “flag raising” in my grandfather’s backyard. For as long as I can remember, there stood a flagpole at one end of the lush green lawn, and from that pole hung Old Glory, proudly waving in the wind, for the entire summer. My grandfather and uncle would unfurl this flag each May and, with a mix of reverence and humor as they paraded in their snug jackets and trousers, would carefully raise it – and then, salute proudly. Come September, this same succession of events would take place in reverse, and the flag would be carefully put away for another season. As a child, I can’t say I truly understood what was going on, nor did I appreciate the significance of the ordeal. Sure, there was a bit of tonguein-cheek humor to go along with the solemnity; but make no mistake; they took it all very seriously. Thankfully, there are

pictures from a few of these ceremonies… along with the memories to last a lifetime. Last summer, as my grandparents’ house stood empty for the first time in 56 years, a “For Sale” sign staked on the front lawn, the family gathered one late spring afternoon to begin the process of going through belongings. The ceremonies of days gone by a distant memory at this point, a somewhat tattered flag still hung from the pole. Inspired, the “children” decided to raise a brand new flag, one last time, in honor of my grandfather, and all the wonderful summers spent in that backyard. As for the old flag, the last one my grandfather had hung, I kept it. And each time I drive by the old house, now filled with a new couple starting their lives, I look to see if the old flagpole still stands. It does, and the flag remains.

their triumphs. The day-long event featured a variety of Olympic-style sports, giving participants a chance to participate in healthy competition, gain a sense of confidence, and enjoy the day with friends and family.
The event was an exhilarating and uplifting experience for both athletes and spectators alike. The Town of Oyster Bay works closely with Special Olympics and helps facilitate their initiatives locally.

student, and Eric, police science and criminal justice student, were honored for their third quarter grades, attendance, work ethic and preparedness. Students of the Quarter

Computer Coding Syosset 3rd Grade Brownie Troop 3450 (Village Elementary School) recently participated in the 3rd Annual Coder Dojo hosted by Thomson Reuters in New York City. As background, CoderDojo NYC is a “volunteer non-profit program that provides
learning experiences for children to explore web, game and app development.” The girls learned introductory computer coding using the Scratch program. Each girl brought their own laptop and with the help of volunteer mentors, created a computer game.
This out of-school learning experience culminated with the girls presenting their games to all the attendees. This was a fabulous and unique opportunity. Thank you to Danielle Rivner for landing this opportunity for our Brownie troop.
Olympians Impress Congratulations to the Science Olympiad teams from Harry B. Thompson and South Woods middle schools and Syosset High School for their success in advancing to state-level competition. All three teams performed well at the 2017 Science Olympiad Regional competition held at Kellenberg Memorial High School, with South Woods and the high school capturing first-place honors. Together at the New York State Science Olympiad Finals, held at East Syracuse-Minoa High School, the three schools combined to win 39 medals.
South Woods and the high school captured sixth- and eighth-place in the state, respectively. South Woods also won first-place overall among small-sized middle schools. This marked the first year that all three Syosset secondary schools sent teams to the state completion and the first year H.B. Thompson advanced. Additionally, South Woods coach Linda Stallow won an Outstanding Coach award. Sean Bostrom, Paul McNamara and Jennifer Mulligan coach the H.B. Thompson team and Mildred Castañeda coaches
the high school team. “These students and their coaches worked very hard and they have made us all very proud,” said Syosset K-12 Science Coordinator Raymond Loverso, who introduced the teams to the community during a brief ceremony held in conjunction with the May board of education meeting, where students received certificates from the Board for their accomplishment. A total of 94 students (64 from Syosset High School) attended the state Science Olympiad on behalf of the district.

Seven Survivors Syosset High School welcomed seven survivors of the Holocaust for a day of reflection and respect for one another on Holocaust Remembrance Day in April. Coordinated by Social Studies Administrative Assistant Thomas Fusco, Library Media Specialist Lynn Ortlieb and teacher Richard Cafiero, Holocaust Remembrance Day brought 10th-graders together to listen to compelling presentations and
testimony from speakers/ survivors Annie Bleiberg, Gloria Gantz, Sam Hersley, Mordechai Miller, Werner Reich, Irving Roth and Mireille Taub. Some of the speakers brought images of the Holocaust to help illustrate this tragic time in world history. Miller even brought a model of a barn, which replicates the real barn he hid in from the Nazis during their occupation of Poland. The event had special meaning to sophomore
Jacob Hersley, a student organizer and grandson of speaker Sam Hersley. Three generations were on hand to listen to the elder Hersley’s account of Auschwitz, as Jacob’s father Mark Hersley was also present. Each speaker emphasized the importance of respecting others, including those of different ethnic and religious backgrounds.

Congratulations to Rachel Doyle of Syosset High School, who is a National PTA Outstanding Interpretation Award winner in the PTA Reflections contest “What’s Your Story?” Rachel’s Reflections photo entry titled “Out Of The Darkness” has earned her the highest honor that a student can receive at the national level, as one of only seven winners in the country recognized in a Reflections category. She will receive a gold medal and certificate, an $800 Young Artist Scholarship,
$200 for the high school PTSA and recognition in the traveling art exhibits and online gallery. Rachel will also receive an expense-paid trip for her and one adult to showcase her winning entry at the National PTA Awards and Reflections Celebration at the National PTA Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada in June. “On behalf of New York State PTA, we are overjoyed by this magnificent achievement,” said NYS PTA President Gracemarie Rozea in a letter sent to Rachel.
Hundreds of thousands of students earned recognition for their participation and talent in the 2017 PTA Reflections contest. This year, Rachel is the only New York artist honored with the Outstanding Interpretation award, with five students from the state earning Awards of Merit in Dance Choreography, Literature, Music Composition (2) and Visual Arts. Reflections also recognizes students in Film Production and Special Artists categories.

MEMORIAL SERVICE - Local legislators recently attended Nassau County Police Department’s Memorial Service for officers that lost their lives in the line of duty. This annual event was held in front of Nassau County Police Headquarters, where the names of those who gave their lives protecting and serving Nassau County’s residents, are listed. Supervisor Saladino thanked Nassau County’s finest for their service and for placing themselves in harm’s way in order to protect the citizens of the county.

LIVE Celebration Long Island Volunteer Enterprise (LIVE) is celebrating 25 years of coordinating corporate volunteerism initiatives with a week-long, islandwide volunteer drive from June 3rd-11th, 2017. Since 1993, corporate volunteers matched to one-day projects through LIVE have completed over 250,000 community service hours for nonprofit agencies benefitting Long Islanders in need. Companies with ongoing LIVE volunteer teams include Deloitte, PwC, IBM, Kravet, Peoples Alliance Federal Credit Union and UL. “LIVE started during a time when corporate volunteerism was very rare,” said Rosemary Mascali, 2017 LIVE Planning Committee Co-Chair and manager at Transit Solutions. “With the assistance of our partners, United Way of Long Island and the Long Island Volunteer Center, I’m happy that LIVE has played its part in increasing corporate volunteerism on Long Island,” she added. More than 7,000 participants helped raise a record $635,000 at four Northwell Health Walks across Long Island, Westchester and Staten Island on Sunday. From the Jones Beach boardwalk in Wantagh to Tanger Outlets in Riverhead, supporters laced up to support women and children’s health initiatives, and cardiac and cancer care. Mr. and Mrs. Met greeted walkers at the Jones Beach 5K while Zumba instructors warmed up the crowd at Midland Beach in Staten Island, part of a festive day with a serious goal: Funds go to several area hospitals, with the Jones Beach walk benefiting Northwell’s Katz Institute for Women’s Health and Cohen Children’s Medical Center in New Hyde Park. “This day is about empowering women and their families and helping them on the path to wellness,” said Stacey E. Donations will be collected through June 9th. It will also save lives. Matthew Gendron is proof. His team, which marched en masse at Jones Beach, was simply happy to see the 19 year-old from Howard Beach, Queens, still standing after he was rushed to Cohen Children’s in septic shock last May. “I was 30 minutes away from dying,” said Mr. Gendron. “I’m walking to say thank you to the doctors who saved my
life and to raise money so other kids can receive the same care and go on to have a happy life.” Mr. Gendron was born with a rare blood disease, known as Auto Immune Lympho Proliferative Syndrome (ALPS), which is defined by a low platelet count. Cohen Children’s previously treated his preexisting condition. But one morning last May, he woke up very ill and was rushed to Cohen, where he passed out in the elevator upon arrival. Medical staff quickly diagnosed Mr. Gendron and he recovered after five weeks of treatment in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. “No matter how bad it got, I knew Matthew was in the best hands and I never once doubted that they would save my son,” said his mother, Holly Gendron. “We are raising money so that other families can receive the support and care my family was given.”
