Moriches Field Brewing Company received $18,750 to revitalize an empty downtown space.
(Cheers to that.)
Revitalization grants are just one of the ways we help businesses on Long Island and in the Rockaways. For Moriches Field Brewing Company, a grant from our economic development program was a perfect fit to help them renovate a previously vacant property. A discount through our Vacant Space Revival Program saved them more than $4,000 on their electric bills, and rebates for upgrading to LED lighting are keeping them saving month after month.
Helping revitalize our Island, one business at a time, is something we’re proud to be part of and something definitely worth celebrating.

Interesting Facts About Memorial Day
Interesting facts about Memorial Each year on the last Monday of May, Americans celebrate Memorial Day. Memorial Day is a federal holiday that honors and mourns American military personnel who died while performing their duties in service to the United States Armed Forces.
Memorial Day has a rich history and one that’s worth revisiting as the nation prepares to honor the sacrifices made by its military personnel over the centuries.
• Freed slaves played a role in the establishment of Memorial Day. The American Civil War is the deadliest military conflict in American history, as the Union and the Confederacy each suffered more than 800,000 casualties by the time the war ended in 1865. According to History.com, as the war drew to a close, hundreds of Union soldiers who were being held as prisoners of war died and were buried in a mass grave in a Confederate prison camp in South Carolina. After the Confederate surrender, more than 1,000 now-freed slaves honored those recently deceased Union soldiers during a ceremony where they sang hymns and distributed flowers. The ceremony was dedicated to the fallen soldiers and served as a precursor to what is now celebrated as Memorial Day.
• Confederate soldiers were honored, too. Confederate losses during the Civil War outnumbered Union losses, and those losses were not forgotten by Southerners who survived the war. History.com notes that, in 1866, the Georgiabased Ladies Memorial Association, one of many similar organizations to arise in the aftermath of the war, pushed for a day to honor fallen Confederate soldiers. In fact, these efforts are believed to have
influenced General John A. Logan. In 1868, General Logan, a Civil War veteran who was then serving as commander-in-chief of a group of Union veterans, ordered the decoration of Union graves with flowers on May 30. The day would ultimately be known as “Memorial Day.”
• It took a long time for Memorial Day to become a federal holiday. Despite tracing its origins to the immediate aftermath of the Civil War, Memorial Day did not become an official federal holiday until 1971, more than a century after the war ended. This is the same year the holiday was officially designated as taking place on the last Monday in May. The designation has periodically drawn the ire of veterans and military supporters who suggest it is now more widely seen as the unofficial beginning of summer and not a day in which the sacrifices of fallen U.S. soldiers are honored to the extent that they should be.
• Debate exists about which town has the longest history of celebrating Memorial Day. A handful of towns claim to be the first celebrants of Memorial Day. That debate figures to continue in perpetuity, but History.com notes that Waterloo, New York, was officially recognized by U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson as the birthplace of Memorial Day in 1966. Doylestown, Pennsylvania, and Rochester, Wisconsin, are some other towns that claim to have celebrated Memorial Day since the mid-1860s.
Memorial Day has a rich history that highlights the importance of honoring the men and women who have given their lives while in service of the United States military.

Supporting Local Businesses
Consumers who want to support local businesses should know that positive product reviews can be a great and effective way to do just that. According to Business2Community. com, 88 percent of consumers trust online reviews as much as personal recommendations. In addition, customers are likely to spend 31 percent
more on a business with “excellent” reviews, while 72 percent of consumers say that positive reviews make them trust local businesses more. The 2018 ReviewTrackers Online Reviews Stats report found that star ratings affect consumer behavior, as 80 percent of consumers say they trust 4-, 4.5- and 5-star ratings
the most. The good news for consumers is that product reviews need not be long to be effective. ReviewTrackers notes that the average review is now roughly the size of a tweet and has gotten 65 percent shorter since 2010. That means it’s simple, quick and effective to support local businesses via online reviews of their products.
The Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame
(LIMEHOF) is a 501(c) (3) organization dedicated to the idea that Long Island’s musical heritage is an important resource to be celebrated and preserved for future generations. The organization was created as a place of community that inspires and explores Long Island music in all its forms. They have proudly inducted over 120 music artists and related professionals who are recognized at their beautiful new Stony Brook location.
Music Education plays a significant role in the lives of many. In addition to granting thousands of dollars in music scholarships to individuals each year, LIMEOF also awards selected Music Educators with their ‘Educator of Note’ award annually, allowing those who go above and beyond for their students to be honored with a grant that can be used within the school or district that they work(ed) in.
To nominate an individual for the Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame’s ‘Educator of Note’ award, please contact Tom Needham at education@limusichallo ame.org. This year’s nominations must be submitted by September 30th.
Donate: Donations of any size are accepted and appreciated. Your donation will help preserve our rich musical heritage and assist in providing music education programs for children and adults, including scholarships to deserving high school students. Attend Their Upcoming Benefit Concert: On Sunday, July 23rd at 7:30PM, a concert featuring Pat Benetar, Neil Giraldo and Taylor Dayne will be held at the Catholic Health Amphitheater at Bald Hill. This show will benefit the Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame, so everyone who buys a ticket will help support their mission. “We are thrilled that two of our Inductees, Pat Benatar and Taylor Dayne, are performing at this very exciting benefit concert for the Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame,” said Ernie Canadeo, LIMEHOF Chairman. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for all Long Islander’s to enjoy a terrific concert in a wonderful venue and support the Hall of Fame’s mission of keeping Long Island’s music heritage alive.”

Wellbridge Welcomes Oakley The Therapy Dog As Newest Team Member
Wellbridge, a Calvertonbased addiction treatment center, doubled the amount of patients it saw over the last year. Their personalized approach to care addresses the needs of patients entering treatment for the first time, as well as those who have been through rehabilitation previously and are seeking a more sustainable path to longterm recovery. Substance Use Disorder is a chronic, treatable illness and the Wellbridge approach examines the causes of a patient’s substance use and treats the whole person.
Struggling with substance use can be a lonely experience for patients, who are typically away from their friends and families.
That is why, in addition to a variety of evidence-
based treatments, established research, patient experience, quality metrics, and outcomes, Wellbridge employs the services of one four-legged, furry volunteer.
Oakley, a two year old English Labrador Retriever, is a certified therapy dog that has been the newest addition to the team. After completing an extensive training program that included time at assisted living facilities, hospitals and nursing homes, Oakley began her rounds at Wellbridge.
Each Saturday, Oakley and her owner, Wellbridge’s Krystal Keillor, spend hours working with groups of patients. Over the course of several 45 minute sessions, Oakley works her way around a circle of
Portledge School Student Brody Ort Recognized For Volunteerism
Nassau County Legislator
Joshua Lafazan (DWoodbury) presented a Nassau County Legislature
Citation to Portledge School student Brody
Ort in recognition of his volunteerism on Sunday, April 30 at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center.
For the past 10 years, Brody has volunteered with the Long Island Rough Riders Sled Hockey
team. The team gives differently abled juvenile and adolescent athletes the opportunity to develop skills and confidence to dominate on the ice. Brody, a high school hockey player has assisted players skate and develop their skills in sled hockey. He has also worked with the organization President Frank Martin to help raise funds to pay for the team’s ice time and
travel arrangements.
“His simple act of kindness has connected athletes with different abilities and skills to support each other on and off the ice,” Legislator Lafazan said. “I am proud to recognize Brody for his unwavering commitment and dedication to the Rough Riders organization and its players.”

seated patients, greeting each of them, often receiving belly rubs in return.
Keillor, who is a Certified Recovery Peer Advocate at Wellbridge, relies on her canine sidekick to be there as she provides supportive services and a recovery plan for patients. The comfort that Oakley provides is palpable for staff and patients.
“The patient response has been nothing short of incredible,” said Keillor. “Patients have stated that they come to the group with anxiety, stress, and depression. When they leave a group, they feel the complete opposite expressing calmness, serenity, gratitude, hopefulness, happiness.”
When not working in a group setting, Oakley is at Keillor’s
side, supplementing therapeutic visits with her soothing presence. This is particularly important during the difficult detoxification portion of patients’ stay. Withdrawal from any substance can be painful and debilitating. Moreover, many patients are missing their own pets at home while in treatment, and Oakley serves as an able stand-in.
In spite of her youth, Oakley brings advanced experience in treatment. She has been in longterm care facilities since being eight months old, previously serving at a separate treatment center in Connecticut. When she’s not working, Oakley lives with Keillor and the rest of their family in Wading River, NY.
Bike Safety Poster Contest For
Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Laura Maier announced the return of the Town’s Bike Safety Poster Contest, held throughout National Bicycle Safety Month. The poster contest is open to all 5th grade students in the Town of Oyster Bay.
“Nothing is more important than the safety of our children, and many residents have shared their concerns about bicycle safety as drivers and youngsters alike are often unsure of safe biking practices,” Supervisor Saladino said. “This poster contest was launched to begin increasing awareness of bike safety guidelines in our community, especially as we celebrate National Bike Month
Fifth Graders
this May and spend more time in the outdoors as summer approaches.”
To enter the contest, students must digitally design or draw a picture that illustrates safe bike riding. The poster should include simple language about New York State Guidelines for bike safety, which are available online at https://tinyurl. com/bikesafeny. The top three winning posters will be unveiled to the public during an official meeting of the Oyster Bay Town Board, and featured in a town-wide newsletter. Entries will also be displayed in a “Digital Art Exhibit” on the Town of Oyster Bay’s website.
“This program not only helps fifth graders become more educated on the serious issue of bike safety, it also
helps them learn more about Town government and be recognized in their hometowns,” said Councilwoman Maier. “Last year’s contest entries were extremely creative and informative, and I look forward to seeing this year’s designs. We encourage all fifth graders to participate!”
Submissions should be made on 18” x 24” size poster paper and emailed to postercontest@ oysterbay-ny.gov. In their submission email, students are asked to please attach a highresolution photo of their poster as a PDF, JPEG, OR PNG file, as well as a completed entry form, which is available online at oysterbaytown. com/bikesafety. The submission deadline is Wednesday, May 31, 2023.

Syosset Senior Sabrina Guo Recognized As U.S. Presidential Scholar
Syosset Senior Sabrina Guo is being recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as a 2023 U.S. Presidential Scholar. Sabrina is one of only 161 expected high school graduates nationwide selected for this high honor.
Application to become a Presidential Scholar is by invitation only by the U.S. Department of Education’s Commission on Presidential Scholars, and candidates are selected based on their superior academic and artistic achievements, leadership
qualities, strong character, and involvement in the community.
“Sabrina’s dedication to both her academic studies and our community is unmatched. She is truly deserving of this distinguished recognition,” said Dr. Thomas Rogers, Syosset Superintendent of Schools. “We are so inspired by her work ethic and honored to have her as a member of our student body. We can’t wait to see all she will accomplish as she moves on to her next chapter.”
The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964 by Executive Order of the President to recognize excellence in education and to honor some of the nation’s most distinguished graduating high school seniors. Roughly 5,000 students nationwide apply, but only 161 are named presidential scholars. The Presidential Scholars Class of 2023 will be recognized for their outstanding achievement this summer with an online recognition program.
Three Syosset High School Students Qualify For National Math Olympics
Syosset High School students Maximus Lu (12), Katherine Li (11), and Grace Lu (9) qualified to participate in the Mathematical Association of America’s (MAA) USA Mathematical Olympiad (USAMO).
The USAMO is a six question, two-day, 9-hour essay/proof examination for qualifying students who excelled on the previous round of MAA exams, the AMC 10/12 and the American Invitational Mathematics Exam (AIME). Only 558 students
across the United States qualified to take this exam. A high score on this exam will qualify these students to attend the summer Mathematical Olympiad Program (MOP) at Carnegie Mellon University. The MOP program is a three week intensive camp that prepares students for the International Mathematical Olympiad. Maximus, Katherine, and Grace were among eighteen Syosset High School students to qualify to take the American Invitational Mathematics
Exam (AIME). To qualify to take the AIME, students must score in the top 5% of all students tested on the American Math Contest 12 or top 2.5% on the American Math Contest 10.
The MAA’s American Mathematics Competitions program is a series of exams and curriculum that helps America’s educators identify and foster a love of mathematics in their students by building problem-solving and analytical skills in middle and high school students.
