Fire Island Lighthouse Events The Fire Island Lighthouse Preservation Society will present the following: Plein Air Art Studio Friday and Saturday, May 25th and 26th Artists from Wet Paints Studio Group will be painting on site in the Lighthouse area.

Last Chance to Pay Oyster Bay Town Receiver of Taxes James J. Stefanich advises Town of Oyster Bay property owners who missed paying their 2017-2018 School taxes by the May 10th deadline, that they can still avoid additional interest and fees beyond the standard 2% late payment penalty.

Late payers should immediately contact the Receiver’s office at 516.624.6400 if they did not receive a second notification with a delinquent tax bill.

Payments postmarked after May 31st cannot be accepted since the

collection warrant will have expired. Those payments must be sent to the Nassau County Treasurer at 1 West Street, Mineola, New York 11501.

Stefanich pointed out, “Failure to pay late taxes before the collection warrant expires will result in a delinquent tax lien proceeding with the possibility of the lien being sold next February.

Continued failure to pay all taxes levied against the property will result in your loss of the property.”

In July, the Nassau County Treasurer will be mailing notices to

all property owners with taxes in arrears.

Receiver Stefanich advises homeowners who fall under those circumstances to contact the Nassau County Treasurer at 5712090 to determine the amount in arrears. They may also visit that office at 1 West Street, Mineola.

Receiver Stefanich noted, “I want to make sure that property taxpayers in Oyster Bay do not jeopardize their home ownership because they were unaware of the consequences of not responding to notices from the Town or County.”

Teacher Recognition Day

Oyster Bay Honoree

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino joined with his colleagues on the Town Board in recognizing Oyster Bay High School Senior Brittany Browner for her recent efforts.

In addition to being a member of the National Honor Society and Science Honor Society, Brittany is a member of Girl Scout Troop 138 in Oyster Bay. As part of the community service component of

earning her Gold Award, the Girl Scout’s highest honor, Brittany designed an incredibly comprehensive self-guided tour pamphlet that features historical highlights in Oyster Bay with ties to our Nation’s 26th President, Theodore Roosevelt.

Brittany’s “Teddy’s Tour” pamphlet includes 13 local historical destinations. On hand to show support for Brittany and recognize her incredible efforts

were her Parents, Michele & Dennis Browner, her brother Eagle Scout Bryce Browner, along with Alex Gallego, President of the Oyster Bay-East Norwich Chamber of Commerce and AMVETS Post 21.

Supervisor Saladino and his colleagues on the Oyster Bay Town Board joined in honoring Brittany, presenting her with a citation and thanking her for her commitment to the community.

Social Worker Honored

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently joined with his colleagues on the Town Board in recognizing Hicksville High School Art Teacher Beth Atkinson and Lee Avenue Elementary School Teacher Phillip Moshoyannis in honor of National Teacher Recognition Day. The Teachers were joined by their colleagues, Hicksville School District Superintendent Dr. Carl Bunoso, Hicksville High School Principal Raymond Williams Lee Avenue Elementary School Principal Stephanie Stam and Hicksville District Social Studies Supervisor.

Beth will be retiring at the end of the school year and began teaching art at Hicksville High School in 1986. She is well respected

by colleagues, students and the community for her caring demeanor and her unique ability to connect with those she teaches.

Beth’s many career recognitions include being named New York State Art Educator of the Year, Long Island Educator of the Year, A Harvard Club of Long Island Educator of Distinction and she has been listed with “Who’s Who Among American Teachers” on eight separate occasions.

She has an incredible legacy of accomplishments in the district and the community.

Phillip, now in his 23rd year as an elementary school Teacher at Lee Avenue Elementary School, has always exemplified the highest ideals of public service, professionalism

and dedication to his job.

Phillip was selected as a Fulbright Teacher for the U.S. Department of State’s Global Classroom Project and is one of only four teachers from New York State and the sole representative from Long Island to be selected for this prestigious national program. He has also served as an officer with the National Guard and helped patrol ground zero following the attacks of September 11, 2001.

Supervisor Saladino and his colleagues on the Oyster Bay Town Board joined in honoring Beth and Phillip, presenting them each with a citation and thanking them for their ongoing commitment and continued dedication to the community.

The 34th Annual Child Abuse & Neglect/Family Violence Volunteer and Professional Recognition Day was held Friday, April 27th, at the Suffolk County William H. Rogers Legislature Building.

Eastern Suffolk BOCES School Social Worker Sue Roeller was the recipient of a Certificate of Appreciation from Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone for her special leadership in school social work and she received a proclamation from the Suffolk County Legislature. Roeller resides

in Bethpage.

Sue Roeller is a strong advocate for the students of Suffolk County. She provides counseling services to students with emotional disabilities, routinely going beyond her typical job responsibilities of providing school-based counseling to offer support to students’ families.

Ms. Roeller works with students and their families on issues within the home that create unsafe situations for the students. She helps develop strategies that

improve family dynamics and prevent abuse. On several occasions, Ms. Roeller has worked with Child Protective Services to help ensure the safety of students and when needed, helped to find the students emergency housing outside of the home.

Ms. Roeller has a calling to help and serve others.

She is always willing to provide support, offer guidance, and volunteer her time for the benefit of a child.

The Art League of Long Island upcoming juried exhibition “It’s all about the…Light!” invites artists from Suffolk, Nassau, Brooklyn, and Queens to submit their works, in any medium, dealing with their interpretation of light. The exhibit will be on display in the Art League of Long Island’s gallery July 7th through August 5th. The deadline to submit applications to exhibit is May 30th, 2018.

The exhibition juror is Karen Levitov, Director and Curator, Paul W. Zuccaire Gallery, Staller Center for the Arts, Stony Brook University How do you interpret light in your work? The arrangement of darks and lights can create an atmosphere making the same scene appear ominous or contemplative, violent or tranquil. Use of color can create radiant light or reflective light.

Your work may explore the correlation of time

and light: the flat light of mid-day, the long shadows of late afternoon, the soft misty morning light, or the mysterious light of evening. Explore how the sources of light affect the subject and its surroundings. Do you strive for the dramatic or theatrical chiaroscuro?

Artificial light, natural light, reflective light all have their own qualities.

Does your abstract work express a quality of light through your use of color, creating harmony or disharmony? Values of color create patterns of lights and darks. It’s all about the light.

About the juror: In Karen Levitov’s four years as Director and Curator of the Paul W. Zuccaire Gallery, she has organized numerous professional solo and group exhibitions of contemporary art, each with exhibition catalogs, and also mounts annual graduate and undergraduate student

shows. Exhibitions include group shows of abstract painting and sculpture, photography by artists of color, experimental new media artists, and solo shows by prominent artists. Levitov has initiated diverse educational programming, including Artist Talks, Salons, Art2Go and the campus-wide Art Crawl. Prior to Levitov’s Stony Brook appointment, she was a curator and senior administrator at The Jewish Museum, New York, where she organized numerous exhibitions, including a solo exhibition of contemporary

artist Kehinde Wiley’s monumental portraits, work by Impressionist painter Camille Pissarro, and an exhibition of modern masterpieces

by Matisse, Picasso and others. Levitov’s books published in conjunction with her exhibitions include New York: Capital of Photography, Camille Pissarro: Impressions of City and Country, and Collecting Matisse and Modern Masters: The Cone Sisters of Baltimore.

and remarked, “Oh yeah, that happens a lot - summer and all.”

No offer of a replacement, no sympathy for the ruined meal, no nothing.

The customer is always right, indeed.

Of course, there are times when the customer seems obliged to seat him/herself, place the order and perhaps even head back into the kitchen to cook it as well, such is the poor quality of service.

On the other end of the spectrum, I’ve been witness to a waitress literally sweeping a plate out from under my friend’s poised fork, determining that she was, in fact, finished. As we sat, incredulous over this turn of events, we didn’t know whether to laugh or demand a refund. After about two hours of nursing our drinks and “contemplating” dessert, more appetizers, perhaps a breakfast course… we decided to take the check.

Oddly enough, the waitress didn’t seem amused.

Fast forward to this past Cinco de Mayo, a “holiday” I have never made a special point to celebrate

aside from perhaps ordering a taco or two at a take-out restaurant.

This year, my friend and I (different friend, same Candid Camera tendencies) decided to wait it out to dine in style at a genuine Mexican establishment on the busiest Saturday night of the year. After about an hour, we were seated. We ordered drinks, appetizers and entrees, all of which arrived in quick succession.

Having already decided what we wanted for dessert, we patiently waited for the waiter to return.

And waited…. And waited…

Each time he passed our table, all attempts to make eye contact and flag him down went unnoticed.

We were, we determined, completely invisible.

Nearly an hour later, a random waitress happened to glance our way. Can we order dessert from you? Certainly. Nearly another 30 minutes elapsed before our own waiter, the one who had seemingly abandoned our table, returned.

Dessert? We looked at each other.

We had now been in this venue for precisely four hours.

Cheers, indeed.

I have had my fair share of dining adventures through the years, most of which have since been reflected upon with a degree of amusement in hindsight. At the time, however, well let’s just say there are moments when our entire eating experience seemed to be part of a rather lengthy segment of Candid Camera.

There was the time, while up in Saratoga Springs one summer years ago, that our meal was interrupted by a rather persistent fly. Upon swatting said flying creature, he began a free-fall into what had been - up to that point - a rather enjoyable pasta entree of my mother’s. As she watched, horrified, the formerly agile winged critter began what appeared to be a slow dog paddle through the sauce. Both my father and I were in complete hysterics by this point. When the waiter stopped by the table to check on whether we were enjoying the meal, my mother pointed to the at this point - motionless fly and replied, “Well, I was enjoying it very much, but…” The waiter, without missing a beat, shrugged

The Thunder of One Hand Clapping

This column completes a trilogy, the first being The Art and Pleasure of Meditation, followed by The Power of Zen. What you are about to read is a rare glimpse into a segment of advanced Zen dynamics. For many years, I’ve heard from Zen Masters on this subject; many Zen followers try to obtain it, with varying degrees of success.

I am certain that, after digesting this story, some readers may be dubious and doubt the validity of the episode. I don’t blame them. How can you possibly hear any sort of noise (much less thunder) using only one hand? One thing is certain. The story you are about to read is true. How do I know? Because I was the one it happened to.

Background: I was in London on an extended two-week business trip. As a frequent visitor to the city, I always preferred to stay in a small English hotel, charming and secluded, with a warm, laid-back atmosphere. Of particular interest to me was their private garden in the rear of the hotel.

Immediately upon entering, you felt very comfortable. It had two small

benches, and the entire area was heavily landscaped with bushes and trees. My favorite routine (after a day at the office) was to have dinner, then quickly retreat into this garden. It took only a few moments before one relaxed and felt very much at ease.

The Episode: Several weeks prior to this visit, I had become fascinated with the idea of engaging in the “thunder of one hand clapping,” and constantly thought of it during meditation.

Nothing much happened until my first night in the hotel garden, which I believed was the perfect setting to attempt it.

Try as I might, for the third night in a row, but nothing happened. On the fourth day, I felt strangely different and could not wait to enter my “private garden” that night.

I once again began the process and, after a while, felt a strange tingling in my left arm. I continued meditating; my whole body began to feel very warm.

I’m not sure of the exact sequence, but I remember raising my right arm and placing it in front of my chest.

The next thing that happened is

difficult to explain, except I heard a very loud rumbling sound in the garden, followed by complete silence. I looked up to see that the sky was completely clear. How could that be?

I felt exhausted, but soon noticed that I was drenched in sweat; both palms of my hands were hot, and a deep red color. Truly, I had to remain seated on the bench for a moment before I had the strength to get up. After that, I went directly to my room and had one of the best night’s sleep I had ever experienced.

Aftermath: I can’t explain what happened that night. Was it my subconscious turning thoughts into action? Was it all my imagination?

If so, why the tingling and strange feelings beforehand, and the deep red color of both palms afterward? {By the way, I have never tried this again.} A final thought... Before forming an opinion, just think of all the mysteries in this world that we know exist, yet cannot explain. Could this be one of them?

In honor of April as Autism Awareness Month, students from the National Junior Honor Society, Social Club, Champions of Choice Club and the Siblings with Special Needs Support Group hung blue ribbons and flyers advertising a Kids

and Coins for Autism fundraiser at John F. Kennedy Middle School in the Bethpage Union Free School District.

As part of the efforts, seventh-grader Kate Clyne donated the blue ribbons and provided autism awareness bracelets for all

students and staff to wear for the month. Additionally, sixth-grader Lauren O’Brien sold handmade bracelets to students and staff during lunch periods, raising more than $1,000 for the cause.

Successful Season Competition at Hofstra University – including team captain Smiti Shah being voted as MVP by the judges and teammate Morgan Heller receiving the Dean’s List Award – the team earned the opportunity to attend the World Championships in

Detroit this April.

At the competition, the team placed first in their division and third in a round robin tournament.

More than 400 teams worldwide competed in the World Championship event.

Senior Summer Activities

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently announced a variety of free weekday senior citizens summer activities offered by the Department of Community and Youth Services (CYS) in community centers throughout the Town.

Yoga, dance instruction, and aquatic classes are just some of the activities seniors can enjoy as part of this year’s program, which runs from July 5th to August 31st.

Internship Opportunities Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino today announced a new opportunity for college students to gain meaningful work experience through a new internship program being offered by the Town for the 2018 summer season. This federally-funded program compensates students at a rate of $15 an hour for work completed within various Town departments.

The program will operate June 7th through August 14th. Funds have been granted to the Town by the Oyster Bay-North

Hempstead-Glen Cove Workforce Development Board.

This new internship program provides an invaluable opportunity for students to receive mentorship and supervision from experienced government professionals.”

Lisa Gatti is the CEO & Founder of PalO-Mine Equestrian, Inc., a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations. Through persistence, hard work and a passion to serve others, Lisa opened Pal-O-Mine in 1995 as a 501(C)(3) non-profit.

Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week - and they continue to grow today! This organization sits on eight acres, with a 20-stall barn, handicapped accessible bathrooms, a new 100’ x 120’ indoor arena with state-of- theart footing and a rider hoisting system, and three outdoor riding arenas. They help an unbelievable amount of people, and their work is truly heartwarming.

Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy, Traumatic Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida, Genetic Disorders and Emotional Disturbances.

Every day, they have a different school

drop off children at their location to benefit from their organization; they also offer group programs, individual lessons, corporate workshops and a program specifically designed for military members.

Volunteers are the backbone of PalO-Mine, and there are many different ways to get involved. Some ways you may volunteer are: working directly with children and adults in lessons, working with therapy horses and performing barn chores, fundraising, and helping with property enhancement and landscaping.

Pal-O-Mine has two major fundraising events that are coming up in June. One is their 16th annual “Day at the Races,” which will be on June 8th at Belmont Racetrack. This is held the day before the Belmont Stakes and is a wonderful outing, offering lunch, a premium open bar and door prizes. Their 10th annual Golf Outing, “Par Fore the Horse,” will be held on June 25th at Southward Ho Country Club in Bay Shore. This will include golfing, brunch, course refreshments, an open bar, cocktail hour, dinner, gifts and prizes. Both of these events have sponsorship opportunities and are open to the public (tickets must be purchased).

Girls on the Run ~ Long Island

EGG-CITING EXPERIENCE - Second-graders at Old Country Road Elementary School in the Hicksville Public School District learned about the life cycle of a chicken while waiting 21 days for eggs to hatch. Following the eggs’ hatching, students learned how to gently hold, feed and care for the chicks. The fun and educational lessons were designed to continue building upon students’ learning of the basics of life sciences.

www.GOTRLongIsland.org Girls on the Run is an empowerment program for girls in third through eighth grade that inspires them to be joyful, healthy and confident, while using a fun, interactive curriculum that creatively integrates running. Meeting twice a week in small teams for the 10-week season, volunteer coaches teach girls life skills through engaging lessons and fun movement activities. At each season’s conclusion, all girls from teams across Long Island meet up for a celebratory 5K running event. Their Spring 5K will take place on June 2nd at Hofstra University. They are in need of volunteer coaches (no running experience is required) who have a desire to make an impact on the lives of young girls.

All training is provided. They also need volunteers to help out at their upcoming 5K in the areas of: registration, hospitality, pre-run fun and course cheer. Team to Debut New Flight Demo The GEICO Skytypers Air Show Team returns for their 15thappearance at their hometown air show at Jones Beach.

The team has prepared a new demonstration that will be performed during Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beachon May 26th27th. The 15thannual event will be hosted at Jones Beach State Park, which is one of the largest events for the NY State Parks Department. The homecoming show will be the sixth stop for the 2018 air show season for the squadron of World War IIera aircraft.

The GEICO Skytypers fly six SNJs powered by 600-horsepower Pratt and

Whitney engines. As WWII training aircraft, the SNJs were designed to perform all the maneuvers of fighter planes from the same era, but at slower speeds.

“The SNJs flown by our team were originally used as training aircraft for WWII pilots,” says Long Island resident and Team Flight Lead Larry Arken.

“We consider it an honor to demonstrate the amazing abilities of these vintage warbirds on behalf of our sponsor, GEICO, while sharing some rarely seen aviation history with air show crowds. Now more than 75 years old, the SNJ2 is a testament to the engineering genius of the Greatest Generation. These

aircraft are a dream to fly.”

A majority of the team’s low-level flying demonstration takes place in front of the crowd. The historic roar of the vintage engines fills the air as the team demonstrates more than 20 different periodspecific tactical maneuvers during its 18-minute performance.

“We are excited to reveal a new routine to our supporters for the 2018 Air Show Season,” said Lead Solo Pilot Steve Salmirs, who choreographed the Skytypers’ new demonstration for the 2018 season. “There is more dynamic maneuvering from the various aircraft, additional interaction

The GEICO-sponsored team is known as the “Skytypers” because of its unique capability of creating giant messages

in the sky when not performing in air shows.

Flying five aircraft in a tight, line-abreast formation, the planes coordinate in typing dot matrix-style messages with environmentally friendly puffs of white smoke.

A computer in the lead aircraft uses a customprogrammed tablet to send commands to the other planes via radio signals.

The result is astonishing individual letters as tall as the Empire State Building generating messages that can be seen from 15 miles away in any direction with 20-25 characters typed in less than two minutes.

Flying demonstrations will begin at 10:00 a.m

on Saturday and Sunday.

The U.S. Navy Blue Angels and Royal Canadian Air Force Snowbirds will coheadline the air show that includes military and world-class civilian acts such as: the F-22 Raptor Demonstration Team, U.S. Army Golden Knights Parachute Team, Matt Chapman, Sean Tucker, and many more!

PCLI Special Honorees The Press Club of Long Island will announce the winners of its annual journalism awards at a dinner at Woodbury Country Club on Thursday, June 7th.

The latest inductees in the Long Island Journalism Hall of Fame and winner of the Robert W. Greene Public Service Award will also be honored at the dinner.

Doors open at 6 p.m. for the cash bar followed by a buffet dinner at 6:45 p.m. and the awards presentation at 7:30 p.m.

“It’s our distinct privilege to honor the very best in journalism on Long Island each year,” said

PCLI president Chris R. Vaccaro. “Congratulations to this year’s winners. We are inspired by the work being done every day by journalists on Long Island.”

The highest individual honor bestowed by the press club is induction to the Long Island Journalism Hall of Fame. This year’s inductees are Harvey Aronson, Brian Donovan and Carol Pack.

Aronson was a writer, editor and writing coach at Newsday for more than 40 years. Today he is a lecturer at Stony Brook University. Donovan was a longtime investigative reporter at Newsday

who has won numerous awards, including two Pulitzer Prizes. Pack is being inducted into the PCLI Contributor’s Wing of the Hall for her work with PCLI and the Society of Professional Journalists.

She is a former PCLI president.

The PCLI board chose Newsday for the largemarket Robert W. Greene Public Service Award for an unprecedented database investigation led by reporter Matt Clark, who analyzed more than 60 million rows of data, including 2.5 million tax bills, to reveal deep and discriminatory flaws in the dramatic overhaul

of Nassau County’s tax assessment system.

This year marks the debut of a small-market Robert W. Greene Public Service Award. The Long Beach Herald was selected for its multi-part series chronicling the city five years after Superstorm Sandy.

The Independent/East Hampton Media Group was named best community weekly newspaper by the PCLI board, while Port Washington Magazine was selected as best magazine.

Master Class Held Tony Award-winning Music Director Ted Sperling visited Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) recently, where he conducted a Master Class for the school’s music and theatre students.

Mr. Sperling - who is about to begin rehearsals as music director for Lincoln Center’s revival of My Fair Lady, opening in March 2018 - won the 2005 Tony and Drama Desk awards for his orchestrations of The Light in the Piazza, for which he was also music director. An original cast

member of the Broadway musical Titanic, Mr. Sperling played bandleader Wallace Hartley. His offBroadway credits as music director include A Man of No Importance, Wise Guys, A New Brain, Saturn Returns,Floyd Collins, Falsettoland, and Romance in Hard Times.

Corporate employees and community members participated in the 12th annual Walk/Run for Friends of Karen at the Long Island Marathon, on May 5th and 6th at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow. This year’s events included a 5K Walk/Run on Saturday, May 5th and 10K, half and full marathons on Sunday.

Hundreds of Friends of Karen supporters are enthusiastic and proud to be part of a team that helps families who turn to the NY tri-state organization for assistance when a child is diagnosed with cancer or another life-threatening illness.

The Walk/Run for Friends of Karen started in 2007 with 25 participants

and was spearheaded

by Evelyn Anderson, a former Friends of Karen mother, who wanted to celebrate her son Luke’s life by running a race in his honor. Luke was diagnosed with leukemia as a toddler and is now sixteen and has participated in the 5K for the past five years.

In the years since its inception, the Walk/Run has grown to include close to 150 participants on the team, corporate sponsors and hundreds of supporters throughout the country. Funds raised from the Walk/Run will directly benefit families who are assisted by Friends of Karen’s Family Support program which helps provide services by a team of dedicated professionals –

social workers, expressive arts therapists, and child life specialists – to ensure that families never have to make this difficult journey alone.

“This outpouring of support for the work we do is heartwarming,” said Nancy Mariano, Regional Director of Friends of Karen. “We are so grateful for all those who support our efforts and share in the joy when we all cross that finish line together – for Luke and the hundreds of other Friends of Karen children and their families we help every day.”
