One Of Those Days By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Did you ever have one of those days when... well, let’s just leave it at that. We’ve all surely had them, whatever it is they entail, which usually leads to unnecessary levels of irritation and aggravation. And, more often than not, we are quick to blame others for the series of events which unfolds. Seems only fair. Maybe there is something to that old “got up on the wrong side of the bed” excuse; perhaps our days are destined to

progress precisely how our respective moods dictate. If this is true, then we may as well just crawl back under the covers and call it a day, no? No sense even trying to give it a go and turn things around. Or so many would have you believe… The thing is, if you want to walk around being miserable, go for it. But is it really necessary to “spread the joy” as it were and ensure that everyone you come in contact with is similarly infected with your dark pessimism? Does misery truly love company that much? I think not.

Why the rant on this particular occasion? Just timely observations is all – as one black cloud-carrying individual after another passes through, it is all one can do to stay focused on the task at hand. And that is – to live each and every day to the fullest, to do at least one thing exclusively for yourself and to refuse to let others drag you down into the abyss alongside them. The words are simple enough…now to put them into practice so that “one of those days” doesn’t become every day.

Salmon (NAPSA)-Salmon is good tasting and good for you-rich in omega3s and a good source of protein-says Keith Harris, the Whole Foods Market Port Buyer. For tips and recipes, go t owww. wholefoodsmarket.com.

I have made a decision! I’m proud to say that I will be a member of the Villanova University Class of 2018! After years of hard work, my efforts have finally paid off. It has always been my dream to get into a college that would make me happy, and Villanova certainly does that. As one of the top business schools in the country, Villanova is a great selection for my major, Marketing. Even though some people may not have heard of it, my college has a stunning campus located just a few miles outside of Philadelphia. I would not have been able to get into this

prestigious university without pushing myself through high school. Even though my Grade Point Average was not the greatest during my four years at St. John’s, I had one of the highest ACT scores in the grade. Despite being below the top 10%, I believe my scores were high enough to keep me in the competition for ‘Nova. In addition, my extracurricular activities are what really swayed the admissions officers’ decisions. Now that I’ve gotten into my dream school, I look forward to helping my younger brother do the same. After going through the entire process, I feel as

though I am well versed in the art of the application. Although I may not be the smartest, I realize that one’s grades do not define him/her. There is more to the applicant than a number. Holistically, any student can contribute to an outstanding freshman class. With that being said, if anyone has any questions about my decision, or the application process, feel free to e-mail me. I would love to help, as well as share my knowledge of the college admissions process. As I glide through my last two weeks of high school, I am looking forward to the next four years at Villanova.

Tyler Cianciulli of Islip is a Senior at St. John the Baptist High School. Please feel free to share your feedback with him at: tylercianciulli@gmail.com

A Day At The Races The 6th Annual A Day At The Races will be held on Saturday, June 21st, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Belmont Racetrack. This premiere social event helps fund the MDA Summer Camp program. The local MDA Summer Camp is July 19th through 25th in Center Moriches, NY and provides children age 6-17, from Long Island, the Boroughs and Westchester areas, who are living with neuromuscular disease a one-week sleepover camp where they can make memories that will last a lifetime. The cost to send just one kid to camp is over $800. MDA picks up the tab for all of our campers, and receives no government funding. MDA Summer Camp can take place thanks to the generous donations provided through generous donors and great programs like A

Day At The Races. Thank you to the Committee Members, EastEnd Marketing/ Valero, ERA Top Service Realty and the National Association of Letter Carriers. Also, thank you to sponsors, 7-Eleven, Capital One Bank, Hand Rolled Bagels and Ridgewood Bank. Every sponsor receives admission to the event, which includes a buffet lunch and awards ceremony. If you would like to participate, you can purchase a sponsorship, journal ad, tickets or donate to the camp or silent auction. You can go on www2.mda.org/ DayattheRaces2014 or call 516.358.1012 to get involved. Attendees will also receive an invitation to MDA Summer Camp VIP Day. MDA is a nonprofit health agency working

to defeat Muscular Dystrophy and related diseases through programs of worldwide research, comprehensive services and far-reaching professional and public health education. MDA also supports more than 250 research projects around the world and sponsors more than 200 hospital-affiliated clinics. Local MDA clinics include Montefiore Medical Center, SUNY Downstate Medical Center, NYU Langone Medical Center, NYU Hospital for Joint Disease, St. Charles Hospital and Rehabilitation Center, Columbia University Medical Center, Weil Medical College of Cornell University and White Plains Hospital. For more information about this event please contact Edward Russo at 516.358.1012 or erusso@ mdausa.org.

Men Who Cook The Kiwanis Club of Wantagh is pleased to announce The 13th Annual Men Who Cook Fundraiser and Dinner is set for Saturday evening, May 31st, at 7 p.m. at Temple B’nai Torah, located at 2900 Jerusalem Avenue in Wantagh, with a “Las Vegas” theme. Cost to attend is $30 per person. The evening, a club and community favorite, features meals prepared by Kiwanis club members, community leaders and members of the local business community. This year, the dinner will be accompanied by Vegasstyle gaming, complete with craps, blackjack, roulette and poker tables, slots and a prize wheel. The most successful gamers will win prizes, and a “door prize” will be raffled off for those who attend but who do not wish to gamble. All participants are encouraged to “dress to impress” this year.

Of course, due to the nature of the evening, this year’s event will not be suitable for children. All proceeds are for high school scholarships, Camp Kiwanis and other charitable activities. The $30 admission to the event includes dinner and $50 in chips. For more information, tickets or sponsorhip opportunites contact event Chairman Neal Friedman at 516.785.9557 or Club President Heidi Felix at 516.448.6688 or heidibfelix13@gmail. com. The Kiwanis Club of Wantagh is a part of Kiwanis International, a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world one child, one community at a time. Kiwanis and its family of clubs - nearly 600,000 members strong - annually raise more than $100 million and dedicate more than 18 million volunteer hours to

strengthen communities and serve children. Members of every age attend regular meetings, experience fellowship, raise funds for various causes and participate in service projects that help their communities. The Kiwanis Club of Wantagh, which meets at the Thom Thom Restaurant on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of each month, does many things in your community. Please visit Kiwanis International at www.kiwanis.org or check out our FaceBook page to find out more and to get involved.

By: Milicent Tycko, Stony Brook In wonder and bewilderment The much-sketched owl sits plumply on His roughened bough affirming with alacrity The space abounds with busy flocks Of birds who whirl about in puzzlement Flashing as they dart the Yellow-bright of underwing Or in a duller raiment singing wondrous songs In stasis the scene seems embroidered With thin blue-bodied dragon flies Weaving in their flight a knotted path Of shadowy blue amongst the lilac leaves of Placid green that hang in simple shapes Beneath the waving willow stems That we two also lie beneath thankful for our Canopied protection as we take delight In dancing movements of the pale green leaves And willow stems that shield us so that We may lie upon this grass together And forever in a timeless Breughel scene
