The Dangers Of Dented Cans

Dented cans have long been a source of confusion and concern for shoppers.

They may be discounted and seem like a good deal, but some of those dented cans may not be safe to eat. Damaged cans may be harboring food that contains botulism and other toxins. According to the United States Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Services, if a can of food has a small dent but is otherwise in good shape, the food should be safe to eat. However, deeply dented cans should be discarded. Dented cans of food that are safe will have smooth dents or dents that are not on the seams of the can. A person should avoid sharp dents, dents in the seam and dents where the seam and the can meet.

In addition, if the can is bulging or swollen, it should be avoided. Dents in a seam can let in air and bacteria. Deep dents may have left pinholes, again where bacteria can enter.

This boutique is open to the public MondaySaturday from 11AM-5PM. You can expect to find beautiful items for sale here, such as clothing (some still with tags on them), household goods, and furniture. They only accept very gently used items and everything is cleaned and prepared for sale by a team of dedicated volunteers (the boutique is operated by volunteers only)!

The selfless efforts of their volunteers truly makes the store feel warm and inviting. After rent and utilities are paid, all the rest of the proceeds go directly to the organization, which helps those in need.

In addition to that, the boutique makes many homeless individuals feel loved and cared for by giving them items of clothing free of charge and allowing them to use their bathroom when needed.

Hope House Ministries is a non-profit organization located in Port Jefferson. They provide compassionate, comprehensive and competent care for the poor, the marginal and the wounded among us. This commitment is woven in the Gospel vision that all life is sacred and every human person is unique and has the right to be respected and protected.

They have accomplished much over the 40+ years they have been helping others with minimal financial assistance from federal, state or county agencies. They depend on the generosity of private contributions, fundraising events and corporate donations.

Hope House Ministries services people in both Nassau County and Suffolk County, offering services free of charge.

Together, their staff and volunteers have created an empowering sense of family and community that are the change agents, helping young people grow in self-discipline, critical thinking, problem solving skills and personal responsibility.

There are so many ways that this non-profit can truly help you get your life on a better track. Additionally, there are plenty of ways for people to get involved in helping others through volunteering.

Over the past 40 years, thousands of people have donated their time and talent to help this organization reach those in need.

In 2013, the founder of Hope House Ministries approached long-time supporters of this organization, Barbara and Arti, with an idea of a retail space that could bring in needed funds for Little Portion Frirary, a home which houses 65 young men in recovery of drug and alcohol addiction that is ran by Hope House Ministries. The hope was that the proceeds that would potentially be brought in from a retail space could pay for these young men’s college classes, food, utilities and transportation costs.

Some years later, the perfect location for a store was found and they decided to open up a beautiful boutique there. Since their organization is all about second chances, they called it Hope

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way education is viewed in today’s society. We have a greater appreciation for what it takes to achieve academic success and how all departments have changed their processes to keep children safe.

“When schools closed in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic our schoolhouse was no longer our wheelhouse,” said Hicksville Superintendent of Schools Marianne Litzman.

Buildings within Hicksville Public Schools are participating in activities and lessons to celebrate autism awareness and acceptance.

At Lee Avenue Elementary School, all classroom teachers showed a TEDx Talks video to their students titled, “We Are All Different and That’s Awesome!” After watching the video, classes discussed and wrote down things that make them unique on

puzzle piece cut-outs. The decorated puzzle pieces were hung in classrooms and on a bulletin board in the lobby of Lee Avenue.

Remote students also participated from home.

Teachers at Woodland Elementary School are also involving students in autism awareness activities.

Special education teachers Ms. Dollinger and Ms. Tallon have been virtually reading stories that teach

about autism to general education classes. After the stories, students have the opportunity to ask questions and hold discussions. Ms. Dollinger and Ms. Tallon gave classes puzzle pieces to decorate with messages that promote kindness and embrace differences.

The puzzle pieces were displayed in the shape of a heart for Autism Awareness Month.

Town Honors Environmental Poster Contest Winners

To raise awareness of pollution and its impact on Mother Nature, the Town of Oyster Bay invited 4th and 5th grade students to participate in a poster contest with the theme ‘How Plastic Pollution Harms Our Waterways.’

Appropriately on Earth Day, Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, Councilwoman Michele Johnson, Councilman Lou Imbroto and Town Clerk Rich LaMarca honored the top three winners of the poster contest, which saw over 750 entries.

“This poster contest was a great way to bring more awareness to a critical issue that we are facing in our environment,” Councilwoman Johnson said. “These posters not

only help inform those who view them, but the students involved can now keep their knowledge with them throughout their lives to help make a difference as they grow up.”

The contest was co-sponsored by The Waterfront Center and Friends of the Bay, who also provided prizes to the top three winners. Winners included: -First place: Elisa Wojnicki, 4th grader from Mrs. Ponzini’s class at Charles Campaign School in Bethpage; -Second place: Kalena Burgos, 5th grader from Mrs. Nuccio’s class at John H West Elementary School in the Plainedge School District;

POBJFKHS Recognized Among the Nation’s Top Public High Schools The Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District is proud to announce that PlainviewOld Bethpage John F. Hicksville Students Selected For 7th Senate District Youth Advisory Board

Hicksville High School juniors Roxy Dias, Alina Nodrat and Purnima Sengupta were selected to serve on the 7th Senate District Youth Advisory Board convened by State Senator Anna M. Kaplan.

The goal of the Youth Advisory Board is to ensure youth voices are being heard in the state government. It provides an opportunity for civicminded young people to become more involved in the legislative process.

Each high school within the 7th District has representation on the Youth Advisory Board.

Students will virtually meet as a group with members of State Senator Kaplan’s staff to draft a set of shared priorities and goals. They will then attend virtual quarterly meetings to share ideas and concerns with Kaplan directly.

Each of the Hicksville High School students who were selected have

distinguished themselves for their political interest and activism. Serving on the 7th Senate District Youth Advisory Board is an opportunity for these students who are passionate about government and public service to meet likeminded students, while making a difference in the Hicksville community.

The district congratulates Roxy Dias, Alina Nodrat and Purnima Sengupta on this achievement.

Town Launches First Student & Faculty Saliva-Based COVID Testing Site and identify COVID-19 and any of its 17+ current viral mutations. ProPhase Labs has the capacity to provide test results to individuals within 24 hours from the time when one of its labs receives and accepts a specimen.

Supervisor Saladino stated, “To support school districts with the continuity of academic and athletic activities, we offer this free testing access to

students and faculty. It is my hope that this service ensures that graduations, proms and homecomings can commence in a safe and successful way. By working together, we can and will overcome this disease and bring normalcy back to the everyday lives of our children and families.”

On Tuesday, April 20th, the Oyster Bay Town Board awarded a competitively bid contract to Pro-Phase

Labs so that a greater number of residents have access to accurate and reliable COVID-19 testing, including fast turnaround times. With laboratories in both Garden City, NY and Old Bridge, NJ, ProPhase Labs has the capacity to provide test results to individuals within 24 hours from the time when one of its labs receives and accepts a specimen.

In the coming weeks, the

Town and ProPhase Labs anticipate an expansion of testing access to the general public.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Michele Johnson recently announced a collection drive to support birthday parties for homeless children on Long Island.

Donations collected May 3st through May 31st will support the charitable efforts of Birthday Wishes of Long Island, a notfor-profit organization located in Hicksville.

Through the efforts of volunteers and donations, the organization provides birthday parties to over 1,250 homeless children each year, including gifts, homemade cupcakes, goody bags, activities and

crafts.

“Birthday Wishes of Long Island is a wonderful organization comprised of giving and caring volunteers who help bring smiles to the face of homeless children on Long Island – some of whom have never received a birthday party before,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Help bring normalcy, hope and joy to a homeless girl or boy by donating today to this incredible cause.”

To support these birthday parties for Long Island’s homeless children, the following donations are sought: -New, unwrapped toys for children of all ages

A record number of students in Syosset High School’s Research Program have qualified for the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) after receiving first place designations at regional and state events.

At the Long Island Science and Engineering Fair (LISEF) in March, Maiya Raghu was awarded first place in the Microbiology category, Giselle Rasquinha placed first in Animal Sciences, and Isabella Souza took

first place in Behavioral and Social Sciences.

Also in March, Michael Chu took first place in Computational Biology and Angela Mao won first place in Environmental Sciences in the New York State Science and Engineering

Bolen Appointed as New Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction The Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District is proud to announce the appointment of James Bolen, Ed.D. as the District’s new Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, effective July 1, 2021. Dr. Bolen, who served as an Assistant Principal in the PlainviewOld Bethpage Central School District from 20122015, will be succeeding Mrs. Joanne Mannion, who retired from the District last month.

“We are excited to welcome Dr. Bolen back to our District as the new Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction,” said Dr. Mary O’Meara, Superintendent of the Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District. “He will lead a team of exceptional, instructional leaders, and ensure our students experience meaningful and rich programs delivered by

Prior to his return to POB, Dr. Bolen was a 7-12 building Principal in the Valley Stream North and Cold Spring Harbor School Districts.

Dr. Bolen received his Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Instructional Leadership from St. John’s University.
