a supporting narrative describing the nominee’s on-going veterans related activities, and all nominees must be Town residents.

PSEG Long Island Reminds You To Call 811 Before You Dig A free call to 811 in the service area automatically connects the caller to the local New York one-call center, which collects information about digging projects. The one-call center then provides the information to the utility companies, which send representatives to mark the locations of nearby underground lines with flags, paint or both. Once lines have been properly marked and confirmation from all of the utility owners is received, projects may proceed as long as caution is used around the marked areas.

Here’s important information to consider: · Calling 811 before digging reduces the chances of damaging an underground line to less than 1%. · Underground gas and electric lines are everywhere, even on private properties. These facilities can be easily damaged if dug into, with the potential to cause serious injuries.

Digging into these lines can also disrupt vital utility services, resulting in costly delays, expensive repairs and environmental or property damage.

Whether the job is a major home improvement project or something as simple as a fence or mailbox post, a call to 811 must be placed beforehand to determine where it’s safe to dig.

Call 811 at least two business days before the commencement of each job to have underground pipes, wires and equipment located.

Every digging project, even a small project like planting a tree or building a deck, requires a call to 811. It’s the law. The call is free and the mark-out service is free. The call must be made whether the job is being performed by a professional or a doit-yourselfer. Striking an underground electrical line can cause serious injury and outages, and result in repair costs and fines.

“Spring’s warmer temperatures make it a perfect time for starting improvements to our homes and businesses.

Calling 811 ahead of time helps protect underground utility lines and, more importantly, the safety of anyone digging,” said Michael Sullivan, PSEG Long Island’s vice president of Transmission and Distribution Operations.

“We are glad to see that our customers are getting the message.

Last year there were more than 240,000 mark-out requests in our service area, and so far this year, there have been more than 48,000 requests to 811.”

According to Common Ground Alliance, a member-driven association of nearly 1,800 individuals and 250 member companies in every facet of the underground utility industry, 40% of active diggers in North America do not call 811 because they think their project is too shallow to require it. All digging projects require a call to 811.

First Annual DFQ 22 Mile Duathlon To Be Held May 21 On May 21, 2022 Project9line will host the First Annual DFQ 22 Mile Duathlon at Veterans Memorial Park in Calverton, New York. This first of its kind duathlon will consist of a 9 mile run, followed by a 9 mile ruck and concluding with a 4 mile run. Anyone is able to participate, whether or not you have served our country.

For veterans, the transition to civilian life can be extremely difficult, as they tend to go from structure and routine to a lifestyle that is much less rigid. Additionally, the camaraderie they once had may be quickly depleted once they find themselves going through life as a regular civilian. The unfortunate truth is that around 20 veterans a day commit suicide.

The 9 mile run is dedicated to those members of the armed services that we’ve

lost in combat. The 9 mile ruck is to remember those lost to suicide. The final 4 mile run is dedicated to each runner, so they can celebrate their achievements and reflect on some things they have not quit on.

As a non-profit organization, Project9line supports veterans by providing avenues for them to communicate their experiences and express themselves through the arts and activities. This 22 Mile Duathlon is a way for them to show that they will never quit supporting the troops and our veterans, and it will start at precisely 7:12am to honor a veteran who committed suicide on July 12, 2011.

If you are looking to participate, you can register online up until May 20, 2022 for $150. If you want to participate, but need the funds to do so, there is a fundraising option that

you can choose online when registering, which allows you to register for $0, however you will need to fundraise a minimum of $450 by May 21, 2022. Each participant will receive a race medal, long sleeve shirt and a windbreaker. The first male and first female to finish the duathlon will also receive a DFQ Championship Belt.

Additionally, there will be a “Veteran Service Organization Village” at the event, consisting of various booths occupied by organizations that help veterans. Safety First With DIY Electrical Work

H

ome improvement projects can help homeowners transform their homes. Such projects are costly, but many homeowners save money by doing some, if not all, of the work themselves.

The Electrical Safety Foundation International, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting electrical safety, recommends that homeowners leave electrical work to the professionals. Licensed electricians are well-trained, whereas homeowners may not be skilled enough to avoid accidents or injuries, which can prove fatal when working with electricity.

Homeowners who take the do-it-yourself route with electrical work should consider these safety tips, courtesy of the ESFI, before beginning a home electrical project.

• Learn your home electrical system. Home electrical systems may include power lines, electric meters, service panels, subpanels, wiring, and more. These systems are complex, and homeowners who intend to do some DIY electrical work should familiarize themselves with their home electrical systems prior to beginning any work. The ESFI notes that knowledge of their home electrical systems can help homeowners more safely navigate them and make maintenance easier.

• Honestly assess your skills. An honest assessment of skills is absolutely necessary prior to working on an electrical system. According to the National Safety Council, injuries relating to electrical incidents typically fall into one of four categories: electrical shock, electrocution, falls, and burns.

Each of these injuries is significant.

For example, electric shock, which occurs when electrical current passes over or through a person’s body, involves burns, abnormal heart rhythm and unconsciousness. Given the potential for serious injury, the ESFI urges homeowners to make an honest assessment of their skills before they begin working on their home’s electrical systems. Little or no experience working with electrical systems should be considered a significant hurdle to any DIY project.

• Turn the power off. It’s essential that the power to the circuit that will be worked on be turned off prior to starting any work. This can be accomplished by switching off the circuit breaker in the main service panel.

Similarly, when working on appliances or lamps, make sure the products are unplugged prior to working on them.

• Do not touch plumbing or gas pipes when doing electrical work.

The experts at the Indiana Electric Cooperative note that the risk for electrocution is significant when water comes in contact with electricity. It’s imperative that homeowners do not touch plumbing and gas pipes when performing a DIY electrical project. Professionals know how to work around such pipes while minimizing their risk for electric shock or worse, and homeowners must familiarize themselves with the techniques professionals rely on to stay safe if they intend to begin DIY electrical projects.

Homeowners are best served by leaving electrical work to the professionals. However, those who insist on doing such work themselves should do their homework and get to know their systems and safety protocols prior to beginning a project.

Armed Forces Appreciation Day Celebration On May 20th Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board recently announced that veterans and active United States military personnel are invited to the Town of Oyster Bay’s Armed Forces Appreciation Day Celebration slated for Friday, May 20th from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Syosset-Woodbury Community Park, located at 7800 Jericho Turnpike in Woodbury. This free event, open to all Town of Oyster Bay residents currently or formerly active, will include a BBQ and entertainment by the singing group American Bombshells.

Currently teaching seventh grade science, Mrs. Hachadoorian has also held many roles at H.B. Thompson Middle School, including advisor of the HBT Craft Club, and being an active member of district-wide professional development and decisionmaking committees. Town Honors Plainview-Old Bethpage Senior For Diving Championship Win

Supervisor Joseph Saladino and members of the Oyster Bay Town Board honored Plainview-Old Bethpage JFK High School Senior Greg Meder for his incredible accomplishment of winning the Nassau County Boys Diving Championship with a score of 529.05.

“Greg’s County Championship required nerves of steel and an exceptional final dive to win the title and, like every champion athlete,

he performed at his best when it was needed most,” said Saladino. “We congratulate Greg on this athletic achievement and wish him good luck in the Nationals.”

Recently, Greg placed 3rd at the AAU Red White & Blue Qualifiers in Rochester. This qualified him to compete in the Nationals in the 1 Meter Diving which will take place in May. “This is also an amazing story of improvement and

perseverance, as Greg tirelessly worked at his craft and made steady improvements from his freshman year,” added Councilman Lou Imbroto.

“He finished 3rd in the County last year before taking the top spot this season. With Nationals on the horizon, this young man embodies the New York spirit of ‘Excelsior’ as he continues his path ‘ever upward.’”

SALADINO RECOGNIZES HICKSVILLE SANITATION EMPLOYEE - Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino (center) recently recognized Sanitation employee of over 30 years Mike Delewin (right), of Hicksville, for his off-duty good deed of returning a lost wallet to its owner. While shopping in Home Depot, Mike found the wallet that had been inadvertently dropped by a patron in the parking lot. After several attempts to contact the owner by the phone, Mike drove to the individual’s home to personally deliver it. He safely returned the wallet to the woman, who was incredibly thankful, as she still had not even realized it was missing.

Bike Safety Poster Contest For Fifth Graders

Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Vicki Walsh today announced the launch of a new poster contest open to 5th grade students in the Town of Oyster Bay. The theme of the poster contest is bike safety.

“Many residents have shared their concerns about bike safety here in the Town of Oyster Bay with us, as drivers and youngsters alike are often unsure of safe biking practices,” Supervisor Saladino said. “We launched this poster contest to begin increasing awareness of bike safety guidelines in our community, especially as we celebrate National Bike Month this May and spend more time in the outdoors as summer approaches.”

To enter the contest,

students must digitally design or draw a picture that illustrates safe bike riding. The poster must also include simple language about New York State Guidelines for bike safety, which are available online at https://tinyurl. com/bikesafeny. The top three winning posters will be unveiled to the public during an official meeting of the Oyster Bay Town Board, showcased in winners’ hometowns, and featured in a town-wide newsletter. All entries will be displayed in a “Digital Art Exhibit” on the Town of Oyster Bay’s website.

“I encourage all 5th Graders in the Town to participate in this program, as it offers an opportunity to not only become more educated on the serious issue of bike safety, but to also learn more about town government and

be recognized in their hometowns,” said Councilwoman Walsh.

“The entries in our last poster contest were extremely creative and informative, and I look forward to seeing this year’s designs.”

Submissions should be made on 18” x 24” size poster paper and emailed to postercontest@ oysterbay-ny.gov.

In their submission email, students are asked to please attach a highresolution photo of their poster as a PDF, JPEG, OR PNG file, as well as a completed entry form, which is available online at oysterbaytown.com/ bikesafety. The submission deadline is Tuesday, May 31, 2022 at 11:59 PM, and winners will be announced during a meeting of the Oyster Bay Town Board on Tuesday, June 14, 2022.

Four POBJFKHS Art Students Have Work Displayed in State Exhibit Four student artists from Plainview-Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy High School have had their artwork featured in the 2022 New York State Art Teachers Association (NYSATA) Legislative Exhibit.

Students Erin Donovan, Sophie Heichman, Gabriella Plevretes and Kayla Fischer had their pieces selected to be exhibited alongside artwork from students across the state. Kayla and Gabriella worked under art teacher Linda Curran, while Sophie and Erin worked under teacher Kelly Verdi, who also serves as co-chair of NYSATA Region 9 (Nassau County).

“We pride ourselves here at POBJFKHS on providing opportunities

for our art students to become involved in local, state, and national art exhibitions and contests,” said POBJFKHS Assistant Principal Diana Beltrani.

“We are always excited to hear when students have been selected to exhibit work! Congratulations to the students in this year’s NYSATA Legislative Art Exhibit. Your creativity and hard work inspire us and make us #POBProud!”

The Legislative Exhibit, normally held in the Legislative Office Building in Albany each spring, is the largest public display of student artwork in a public building in the country.

Syosset Students Win Scholastic Art And Writing Awards Thirty-three Syosset high school and middle school students won an overall 102 Regional Awards plus a total of 6 National Awards in the 2022 Scholastic Arts and Writing Awards Competition.

Students were awarded Gold Keys, Silver Keys and Honorable Mentions for their art and writing pieces submitted in 28 categories.

Three Syosset students were honored at the National level.

South Woods eighth grader Julian Sant won a National Silver Medal in Writing for his submission in the Personal Essay & Memoir category.

Syosset High School junior Sabrina Guo was awarded a National Gold Medal in Writing for one of her submissions in the same category. Syosset High School senior Jennifer Zhao won a total of three National Silver Medals in Art; two in the Painting category and

one in Art Portfolio. Jennifer was also one of five regional recipients of a National American Visions Gold Medal for her submission in Expanded Projects. The American Visions Medal is the highest regional honor awarded in the competition.

At the regional level, 14 Syosset students won Gold Key Awards, 18 students won Silver Key Awards, and 18 students won Honorable Mention Awards. Many of Syosset’s students received numerous individual awards over multiple categories, with several students earning awards in both art and writing categories.

Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk www.eoc-suffolk.com The Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk (EOC of Suffolk) is a Patchoguebased non-profit organization that promotes selfsufficiency among low-income families and individuals by revitalizing communities, broadening the minds of children and assisting families in need.

As a HUD-approved housing counseling agency, EOC of Suffolk offers a comprehensive array of housing services. Its “Mortgage Default and Foreclosure Prevention Counseling” program provides mortgage counseling for homeowners island-wide who are having difficulty maintaining their mortgage.

Many households across the country and across Long Island confront the risk of foreclosure. Last month, foreclosure filings nationwide reached the highest level since the pandemic began in March 2020. More than 30 thousand properties across the U.S. faced foreclosure, a 181 percent jump from March 2021 and a 29 percent increase from February.

It was recently reported that about 14,500 Long Island homeowners were at least three months behind on paying their mortgages. The risk of foreclosure has increased when a statewide foreclosure moratorium expired in January.

EOC of Suffolk also offers “Comprehensive Housing Counseling” that helps individuals and families achieve their dream of homeownership. The program provides one-to-one homeownership counseling and group counseling, as well as budget and credit counseling.

Finally, the organization also helps current and prospective homeowners through an online, eight-hour “Homebuyer Education Course.” The course helps enrollees determine if homeownership is right for them, how to shop for a home and how to maintain a home. Those completing the course receive a certificate that positions homebuyers to fulfill education requirements for down payment assistance programs. The certificate can also be presented to lenders. The course operates on a convenient and flexible timetable allowing participants to complete it on their own schedule.

Town Collects And Delivers Over 300lbs Of Pet Food & Supplies

Town Supervisor Saladino, Councilman Steve Labriola and Councilwoman Laura Maier proudly partnered with Long Island Cares for their Annual Legislative Pet Food Drive, which took place over several weeks and

ran through April 15th. The drive focused on collecting food for our residents’ pets through Baxter’s Pet Pantry, which supplies free pet food and supplies to pet-owning families in need. Town officials recognized residents for their

generosity in donating over 300lbs of pet food and supplies, which will in turn keep pets at home with their loved ones, well-fed, and out of shelters.

New ‘Art In The Park’ Initiative Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Michele Johnson invites local artists to participate in the Town’s new ‘Art in the Park’ program, which invites artists and artisans to display and sell their hand-crafted goods.

Applications are now available for the event which will be held on Saturday, May 21st at Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park & Beach in Oyster Bay. “We are calling on all local artists and artisans to fill out an application today to take part in this great opportunity

to showcase their items,” said Councilwoman Johnson. “The free event on May 21st will also feature live music, food trucks and activities for kids, making it a fun day for the whole family.”

Participants must be 18 or older, and display and sell only their original pieces.

No commercial or massproduced items are permitted.

Artists must supply their own 10x10 canopy and additional items required for their space. Additional details and associated costs are provided

on the application, available on the Town’s website.

Art in the Park is run by the Town’s Department of Community & Youth Services, Cultural and Performing Arts Division. The program focuses on hand-crafted goods, including ceramics, watercolors, glass, jewelry, wood, leather, sculpture and more. Clothing Donations Needed For Long Island Children Ethical Friends of Children, a program helping needy families on Long Island, seeks clothing (tops, bottoms, pjs, sweaters and socks) in certain sizes. Specific sizes are: GIRLS: 3-4, 4-5 and 9-10 and BOYS: 7-8 and 9-10.

Ethical Friends of Children is an outreach program of

the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island., established in 1985. “We assist more than 2,500 children and their families each year by providing them clothing for children from newborn to size 12 as well as infant furniture at no cost,” says Pat Spencer of Port Washington. The “store” –

staffed entirely by volunteers – lets families pick out the things they need, at no cost to them.
