On Monday, June 20th, 2016 the American Heart Association will be hosting its 28th Annual Golf Classic-A Joel Hamroff Memorial Tribute at the Meadow Brook Club in Jericho. Event Co-Chairs Steven Yanofsky, Parts Authority, Inc. and Harry Armon, ARCAP Partners, LLC along with the corporate and community leadership of Long Island will be participating to increase awareness of the importance of physical activity. Readers have been writing in lately, inquiring as to my whereabouts, my wellbeing, my latest exploits…

So I’m here, as requested, to fill you all in on my comings and goings – well, as much as one can come and go in the confines of a one-gallon aquarium, but you know…

The latest bit of exciting news – potentially, anyway – is my Human’s impending purchase of a friend for me!

Yes, that’s right, Buddy the Betta will soon be accompanied by the likes of a small, colorful (but not too colorful), aquatic snail.

I’m thinking purple, to

complement my gorgeous aqua fins.

The best part is that, in addition to having a companion for those ohso-long days when my Human leaves me to my own devices, my new little friend can also serve as a portable vacuum cleaner of sorts. With my larger residence, the maintenance can be a bit much, and I do like immaculate living quarters.

I’ve even picked out a name – “Squeegee.” Oh what fun we will have together, so long as he keeps those long tentacles off my delicate fins, of course... and away from my food… and off of my favorite bedtime leaf… and, well, we’ll see how it

goes. This could be shortlived.

Other than that, life in the bowl is pretty much status quo. I’m going on 15 months old, still as vibrant and beautiful (and humble) as ever, and my Human has graduated to feeding me twice a day – small portions, but still, I’ll take what I can get. It’s a good life – especially when Grammy comes to visit and makes kissy-faces at me.

‘Til next time, this is Buddy, anxiously awaiting the arrival of my new googly-eyed roommate.

Several students from Charles Campagne Elementary School in the Bethpage School District shared their written works with the Board of Education at its April meeting.

After learning about components of a personal narrative and ways to

Beach Sticker Sale Beach stickers will be on sale daily, beginning on May 14th, at Tobay Beach, John J. Burns Town Park in Massapequa and Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park and Beach in Oyster Bay from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. and from 1 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. Please note that stickers are NOT available at Town Hall.

In order to purchase a beach sticker, residents must bring their driver’s license and vehicle registration and must be in the vehicle they will use to drive to the beach since stickers are placed on the vehicle at the time of purchase. Only residents may purchase beach stickers for Town of Oyster Bay Beaches. Seasonal stickers are $60, which pay for themselves following three visits.

The sticker is acceptable at all Town of Oyster Bay beaches, so residents with beach stickers will have the opportunity to really enjoy the wonderful beaches in the Town of Oyster Bay all summer long.

Tobay, Centre Island, Philip B. Healey at Florence Avenue and Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Beaches will open for weekends only beginning Saturday, May 28th.

All Town of Oyster Bay beaches will open seven days a week beginning on Saturday, June 25th.

The beaches will remain open through Labor Day, Monday, September 5th.

In an 11page essay, the students carefully detailed the device they envisioned, the design process, the medical breakthroughs that would be needed to make their vision a reality and weighed the consequences - positive and negative - of implementation. Kennedy (POBJFK) High School students Philip Danziger, Samantha Frucht and Grace Smith recently placed second in the national competition, after being named regional finalists at the Toshiba ‘Exploravision’ competition. The students, under the leadership of Coach MaryLou O’Donnell, were the first to be named national finalists in POBJFK High School’s history.

Teams from across the United States and Canada submit their ideas in the hopes of being recognized as one of the 24 regional finalists in the last round.

The Festival also includes musicianship classes, individual master classes, chamber music performance classes and a conducting program – an overview of conducting and rehearsal techniques, score study, musical

“He had a unique ability to connect with people and felt a tremendous sense of duty as a police officer to stand up for those in need.”

Plainedge School District Superintendent Edward A. Salina, Jr., Ed.D said he was honored that his District’s athletic center will be named in Detective Moore’s honor.

“Brian will always be one of Plainedge’s own and we can think of nothing more fitting than to have the district’s athletic center forever bear his name,” Dr. Salina said. “He played ball and attended school on the very grounds where this building is situated.

The entire Plainedge community has been personally touched

by Detective Moore and what he represented. This building will stand as a permanent testament to his legacy of dedicated service.”

Detective Moore paid the ultimate price serving and protecting others.

More than 30,000 police

officers from around the country came to Plainedge to attend services and pay their respects to the fallen officer.

“This memorial statue and building dedication, in the community where he grew up and lived, will stand as a permanent tribute to a young man who touched the lives of many,” Supervisor Venditto said.

“It will also serve to honor the memories of those who made the ultimate sacrifice while defending this nation and protecting its citizenry.”

Parking around Plainedge Park will be limited on the date of the ceremony, so shuttle buses will be continuously operated to and from Plainedge High School, located at 241 Wyngate Dr, North Massapequa, beginning at 11:00 a.m. All attendees are welcome to park at the high school and take the convenient shuttle to Plainedge Park.

Brian cared about the people he served and his community.

“This ceremony is the community’s way of showing how much was cared about him,” Supervisor Venditto said.

“Brian will forever be a true American hero.”

Gathering for Graduates

A joint SADD club venture between Bethpage High School and John F. Kennedy Middle School, a special drive was held to send items to four soldiers overseas who graduated from the district.

For two weeks, items such as books, clothing, food and toiletries were collected at each of the schools and St. Joseph’s Hospital donated medical supplies to send as well.

Students at Lee Avenue Elementary School in the Hicksville Public School District received a special visit from the JLine Dance Crew, and learned the importance of antibullying while being treated to energetic song-and-dance performances.

JLine Dance Crew,

a New York City-based team of dancers who perform while delivering inspirational messages, spoke to the students about being tolerant of other people’s differences while embracing their own. The messages were played in between three dance numbers, and the

performers shared their own experiences with bullying at the conclusion of the program.

The dance team’s visit supplemented Lee Avenue’s ongoing character education by teaching students about the importance of respect in a fun way.

Entrepreneurship Seventh grade students at Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District’s H.B. Mattlin Middle School recently began a business simulation to learn the basics of entrepreneurship, business and finance.

This real-world projectbased learning program created and organized by family and consumer sciences teacher Susan Epstein, offers students the opportunity to learn how

to start and operate their own business.

Working in teams of five, students start, fund and run their own company in the Mason Jar Cookie Mix industry. All decisions the companies make are entirely student-driven.

The students decide everything from what to name their company to how many products to make and how much to charge for them.

The program culminates with the Gourmet Cookie Mix Sales Bazaar, where students sell their products to actual customers other students, staff and community members. All proceeds will be donated to the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life event in Plainview, NY. Students will compete to raise the most funds for the cause.

New York City Police Department Detective 1st Grade Brian Moore, who died in the line of duty on May 4th, 2015 while serving the residents of New York City, will have a special dedication ceremony held in his memory at the Town of Oyster Bay’s Plainedge Park on Saturday, May 21st at 1:00 p.m. The event will include a statue unveiling and building dedication.

“Detective Moore grew up in North Massapequa and proudly called the Plainedge community his home,” Supervisor Venditto said. “The Town of Oyster Bay stands united with the Plainedge community, the Plainedge School District, New York City and the family, friends and neighbors of Brian in remembering this remarkable young man.”

The son of NYPD Police Officer, Brian served with distinction during his career as an officer with the New York City Police Department and made over 150 arrests. He quickly earned the respect of fellow police officers with his tireless dedication to his profession and his inherent ability to root out crime and perform his duties at the highest level.

Stamping Out Hunger Island Harvest Food Bank and the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) are again joining forces for the 24th-annual Stamp Out Hunger campaign on Saturday, May 14th as part of the nation’s largest single-day food drive. Postal carriers throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties will collect nonperishable food items left by caring Long Islanders who want to be part of the solution in ending hunger in our communities. All food collected will benefit Island Harvest in providing supplemental food support to the more than 316,000 Long Islanders at risk of going hungry every day.

Participation in the Stamp Out Hunger food drive is simple.

Residents are asked to leave nonperishable food items such as canned goods, pasta, rice, boxed juices and shelf-stable milk (please, no glass items) next to their mailboxes before regularly scheduled mail delivery on Saturday, May 14th, 2016. The postal

carriers will do the rest.

Food donated will help replenish food supplies at Long Island’s food pantries, soup kitchens and other feeding programs served by Island Harvest.

“The longstanding partnership we have forged with the NALC, the United States Postal Service, and our corporate partners is making a difference in providing much-needed food to the scores of men, women and children who often don’t know when their next meal will be,” said Randi Shubin Dresner, president and CEO of Island Harvest.

“I’m confident that, as in years past, generous Long Islanders will answer the call and leave food donations next to their mailboxes on Saturday, May 14. Every donation, no matter how small, helps Island Harvest serve our neighbors struggling with hunger.”

“The National Association of Letter Carriers is proud to partner with the United States Postal Service and many other local

organizations in helping Island Harvest address the critical issue of hunger on Long Island,” said Walter Barton, president, NALC Branch 6000. “As letter carriers we often see the need for food assistance firsthand during the course of our everyday duties.

Stamp Out Hunger is our way to give back to the community and help ease the burden for the thousands of our Long Island neighbors who may be struggling with hunger.”

Last year, generous Long Islanders donated 346,000 pounds of food to the Stamp Out Hunger collection event, translating into 288,333 meals to assist food-insecure residents in Nassau and Suffolk.

This year’s sponsoring partners of the NALC Stamp Out Hunger collection include Stop & Shop, and the United States Postal Service.

Fitness Check Students, faculty, and administrators from Touro College School of Health Sciences (SHS) welcomed members of the community to its third annual Spring Forward into Health free health fair at the School’s Bay Shore campus. Guests participated in a wide range of health awareness activities provided by the School’s Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Undergraduate Science, and Physician Assistant departments.

The afternoon kicked off with CarFIT, an educational program sponsored by AAA, AARP, the Association of Occupational Therapists and Touro’s Occupational Therapy Department that offers older adults the

opportunity to check how well their personal vehicles fit them to ensure safety and comfort.

The School’s Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Physician Assistant departments provided balance and fallprevention screenings and fitness classes.

Nutrition experts from the Undergraduate Science program and the Cornell Cooperative Extension demonstrated average fat and sugar consumption.

Also on hand were knowledgeable volunteers from L.I. Blood Services, the American Heart Association, and New Wave water filtration systems. Representatives from the U.S. Army

discussed Touro’s militaryfriendly health sciences curriculum.

Jill Zucker, Director of Student Affairs, said the Health Fair has grown larger every year. While many guests enjoy the music, dancing, raffles, and healthy refreshments, Zucker pointed out the fundamental objective of the health fair. “Big or small, the one constant has been that our students get hands-on, educational, and meaningful experience with our community while providing them with health services in a casual, enjoyable setting.”
