Saladino Joins With MiYaD Of Jericho
To Proclaim “Education And Sharing Day” In The Town Of Oyster Bay
Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino joined with Rabbi Chanan Krivisky, of MiYaD of Jericho, to proclaim April 2nd, 2023 “Education and Sharing Day” in the Town of Oyster Bay, in recognition of the 121st birthday of Lubavitcher
Rebbe Menachem Mendel Schneerson who was considered to be one of the most influential Jewish
leaders of the 20th century.
“Rabbi Mendel Schneerson dedicated his life to education and advocated for a greater emphasis of human rights, justice and morality in the education system,” said Supervisor Saladino. “I can’t think of a more fitting way to honor him than to proclaim April 2nd, 2023
‘Education and Sharing
Day’ here in the Town, and encourage classroom instruction to include morality and ethics.”
Supervisor Saladino presented Rabbi Krivisky with this proclamation and thanked him for his incredible efforts and for his spiritual and religious contributions which he provides, every day.
Registration Now Open For Toddler Sports Program
Oyster Bay Town
Councilwoman Vicki Walsh announced that the Toddler Sports Program returns this spring on April 18th. This 6-week program offers sports classes at the Hicksville Athletic Center for children ages 3 and 4.
“The Town’s Toddler Sports Program is a fantastic way to teach your toddler the fundamentals of sports in a fun and social environment,” said Councilwoman Walsh. “This program is sure to be a hit with children and parents alike, as youngsters are given the opportunity to learn the basics of various different sports such as tee-ball,
flag football and more along with children their own age.”
Residents who sign their toddler up for the program must choose one class per week, per child. Classes will take place on: Tuesdays at 1pm or 2pm at the Hicksville Athletic Center; and Thursdays at 1pm or 2pm at the Hicksville Athletic Center.

minutes. The cost of the program is $75 per child who is a Town resident, and $90 per child whose care giver is a Town resident but not the child. The child’s birth certificate and a tax or utility bill will be required to validate age and proof of residency. A guardian must be present during the class. The child MUST be 3 years old by the start of the program.
The Toddler Sports Program is run by the Town’s Parks Department, Recreation Division. For further information, please call (516) 7977945.

Hicksville Music Education Program Receives National Recognition
Hicksville Public Schools has been honored with the Best Communities for Music Education Award from the National Association of Music Merchants Foundation. This is the eighth year Hicksville music educators, administrators,
students and parents have demonstrated outstanding achievement and commitment to providing access to music education and to instilling an appreciation of music as part of the district’s philosophy of offering a well-rounded education for national
recognition.
“We are incredibly proud to be named as one of the Best Communities for Music Education once again,” said District Supervisor of Fine Arts Chad Wyman.
“This recognition from NAMM is a testament of our community’s
commitment to music education and our dedicated music educators who have continued to inspire our talented students to continue learning and sharing music within our district.”
To qualify for the designation, Hicksville
Public Schools answered questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program and community musicmaking programs.
The NAMM
Foundation is a nonprofit organization supported in part by the National Association of Music Merchants. It advances active participation in music making across the lifespan by supporting scientific research, philanthropic giving, and public service programs.

The Charity of the Month for May is LI Music & Entertainment Hall of Fame
The Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame (LIMEHOF) is a 501(c) (3) organization dedicated to the idea that Long Island’s musical heritage is an important resource to be celebrated and preserved for future generations. The organization, which encompasses New York State’s Nassau, Su olk, Queens, and Kings (Brooklyn) Counties, was created as a place of community that inspires and explores Long Island music in all its forms. LIMEHOF, located in Stony Brook, is heavily engrossed in our local communities and o ers Long Islanders many ways to get involved.
As like any non-profit, their volunteers play a large role in their e orts. Each and every person who gives their time as a volunteer is dedicated to help support their mission. If you have a passion for music and would like to volunteer, please visit www. limusichallo ame.org/volunteer and fill out an application form.
Additionally, donations of any size are accepted and appreciated. Your donation will help preserve our rich musical heritage and assist in providing music education programs for children and adults, including scholarships to deserving high school students. Specific donation amounts will allow you to get your name/ information in their Hall of Fame, engraved on either a Quarter Note ($250), Half Note ($500) or Whole Note ($1000).
Scan for more donation information:
The Hall of Fame is now accepting applications for their 2023 Student Scholarship program, where they will award $500 scholarships to graduating students. These scholarships will provide funding for eligible graduating high school students from Nassau, Su olk, Brooklyn, Queens, or Kings (Brooklyn) Counties who have shown an interest in pursuing a career in music.
The deadline for applications is Friday, May 12th. To apply and to read the eligibility requirements, please visit www.limusichallo ame. org/scholarshipsgrants.
LIMEHOF’s deep passion regarding the importance of music prompted them to develop a dynamic multimedia lecture series for schools (pre-school through college) and for libraries. This is designed to celebrate music made by Long Islanders for over a century and has been beloved by many local organizations. If you are interested in learning more, please contact them today at 631.689.5888 or info@limusichallo ame.org.
Be sure to read next week’s article to learn more, including a list of upcoming events!
If your non-profit would like to be featured in this column, please email noellelambert@longislandmediagroup.com for consideration.

To The Friends & Neighbors of The Peninsula Golf Club and Local Civic Associations,
As you may be aware, the Town of Oyster Bay is moving forward with its plan to seize the Peninsula Golf Club (PGC) by eminent domain. This plan, which the Town approved in October 2021, has been the subject of local news reports that are not entirely correct and fail to give a complete picture of the proceedings to date.
Despite the Town’s stated reasons for their action, it is hard to imagine any net bene t to the public in seizing a privately-owned golf course that is open to the general public on a non-discriminatory basis, and that is operated at private expense, to make it a publicly-owned golf course that charges higher fees to guests from our neighboring towns and counties and operates at taxpayers expense. The Town has stated that it is acting to ensure that the property remains a golf course and is not developed into residential housing, but the fact is PGC has not offered or solicited offers to sell the club, nor has PGC made any attempt to disturb the restrictive covenant with Nassau County that has been in place for over 75 years. Instead, PGC has operated the club since 1947 as a public golf course in faithful adherence to the covenant, and it rejected the two unsolicited offers to purchase the club made in 2021, including an informal indication of interest by the Town before the eminent domain proceeding began.
As noted in our counsel’s letter, PGC has offered to address the Town’s concerns by granting a “right of rst refusal” that would give the Town the options to match any serious offer to purchase the course before PGC could conclude any sale to a third party. This solution should be more than sufficient to ensure that the Town’s stated concerns are fully addressed without the time and expense of litigation to both parties.
We appreciate your consideration of these points and ask that you reach out to your local Oyster Bay representatives to stop this unnecessary and costly seizure. The main phone number for Oyster Bay is (516) 624-6350.
Very truly yours,
The Board of Directors of the Peninsula Golf Club

Oyster Bay Town
Councilman Steve Labriola invites local artists and artisans to display and sell their hand-crafted goods at a special day of “Art in the Park.” Applications are now available for the event which will be held on Saturday, May 20th at Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park & Beach in Oyster Bay.
“Art in the Park offers local artists and artisans an amazing opportunity to showcase their best work for the public and gain local notoriety,” said
Councilman Labriola.
“Art in the Park is certain to attract hundreds of families and seniors as the event also features live music, food trucks and activities for kids.”
Participants must be 18 or older, and display and sell only their original pieces. No commercial or mass-produced items are permitted. Artists must supply their own 10x10 canopy and additional items required for their space. Additional details and associated costs are provided on the

The event focuses on hand-crafted goods, including ceramics, watercolors, glass, jewelry, wood, leather, sculpture and more. Hicksville High School Winterguard Team Placed First In Main Championships
Hicksville High School’s WinterGuard team was crowned champion of the Scholastic AA Group at the Mid-Atlantic Indoor Network Championship that was held at the RWJBarnabas Health Arena in Toms River, New Jersey on April 22–23.
WinterGuard is a judged pageantry performance ensemble that uses a combination of dance, movement, and
equipment such as flags, sabers, and rifles.
The Hicksville team placed first in their division that was comprised of 18 other guards from New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. Hicksville Supervisor of Fine Arts Chad Wyman shared, “Our indoor color guard program has grown so much under the leadership of Ms. Smith and her team. This championship
is proof of that. These performers have worked so hard to achieve this and have created something that future groups will look to aspire to.”
The district extends congratulations to the students and Director and Hicksville Elementary music teacher and Alyssa Smith and assistants Carolyn Pinto and Marietta Pirisi.

Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Laura Maier announce a new opportunity for residents interested in helping protect the environment and keep waterways clean. The Town recently joined with local environmental groups to unveil new floating litter trap technology – known as Collec’Thor – at Tappen Marina, and is seeking volunteers to assist in the equipment’s operation this spring and summer.
“These Collec’Thors, which were among the first of their kind to be installed in the United States and the first in New York State, assist in our ongoing commitment to protect our ecosystem and improve water quality by removing debris,” said Supervisor Saladino. “We thank all of the local environmental organizations who assisted the Town in deploying this environmental technology, which collects up to 220 pounds of floating debris in just one cycle.”
The Collec’Thor is a silent, motorized waste collector which attracts and engulfs all solid or liquid waste floating on the water surface. The Collec’Thor project has been a collaborative effort between the Town and the Cornell Cooperative
Extension of Suffolk County (CCE) Marine Program, as well as local environmental groups whose shared mission is to protect waterways. This year, when the Collec’Thor returns to local north shore waterways in April, CCE is seeking assistance from local volunteers looking to get involved in helping their environment.
“This is a great opportunity for high school and college students – as well as adults – to give back to our environment and serve as ‘Citizen Scientists’ in the collection of data,” said Councilwoman Maier. “There are also potential science projects, internships and analysis opportunities, as well as educational field trip opportunities, related to the Collec’Thor and how to protect from marine pollution.”
Specifically, CCE is conducting a study to measure how much debris is gathered by the Collec’Thor and determine what specific trash is found floating in the marina. All volunteers will receive a certificate acknowledging their efforts in making a difference in their community and protecting the environment. The Town currently has two Collec’Thor traps which are installed at Harry Tappen Marina in Glenwood
Landing throughout the spring and summer. Oyster Bay was selected by CCE to receive the floating debris collector through a grant program awarded by the Long Island Sound Futures Fund through the National Fish and Wildlife Fund, and is monitored and operated in partnership with Friends of the Bay, The Waterfront Center, the Oyster Bay/Cold Spring Harbor Protection Committee, and Oyster Bay High School.
Collec’Thors, the latest in marine debris collection technology, have been deemed the most efficient trash skimmers available for marine and coastal usage. They are specifically designed to target solid and liquid waste, including plastic bottles, cigarette filters, butts and packaging, microplastics and hydrocarbons. The technology uses a small pump to draw in surrounding water and skims any floating trash into its receptacle. The mechanism adjusts with the tide and is easily affixed to a floating dock or waterfront location. Anyone interested in volunteer opportunities related to the Collec’Thor should contact CCE Project Manager Amanda Dauman at (631) 727-7850 ext. 322 or email aml357@cornell. edu.
