Syosset Scholars Syosset High School’s National Honor Society recently inducted 351 new members into the Thalian Chapter during two special ceremonies held in the school’s Harvey P. Karp auditorium, which was filled with proud parents, faculty, school officials and scholars.

NHS adviser Beth Waschitz welcomed the audience as Syosset High School Principal Dr. Giovanni Durante and

NHS President Samantha Landsman each gave accounts about the dedication and hard work that goes into becoming a NHS member, as well as all of the wonderful efforts of NHS members throughout the years to make Syosset High School and the community a better place.

Executive Board members lit the ceremonial candles that represent the four key principles of NHS membership: character,

scholarship, leadership and service. Then, one by one, the new inductees’ names were announced and each stepped up to the stage to receive their certificates prior to taking the NHS pledge.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino today announced that the Town has partnered with Special Olympics New York to host the prestigious Spring Games North of the Special Olympics at Bethpage High School on Saturday, May 19th. The opening ceremony will take place at 9:30 a.m., followed by a full-day of competitive events featuring 600 athletes supported by 300 coaches and hundreds of volunteers. The games represent the culmination of months-long training for an Olympic-style competition by individuals with intellectual disabilities.

“Special Olympics are an opportunity to showcase the talents and achievements of the athletes, while also breaking down social barriers and stereotypes,” said Supervisor Saladino.

“The Town of Oyster Bay is very proud to be a partner with Special Olympics New York and the Bethpage School District in making this important event a reality. Join us in witnessing the joy, courage and determination of these inspirational athletes.”

Every day, they have a different school drop off children at their location to benefit from their organization; they also offer group programs, individual lessons, corporate workshops and a program specifically designed for military members.

Volunteers are the backbone of PalO-Mine, and there are many different ways to get involved. All volunteers must be at least 16 years of age, attend a volunteer orientation (orientations are held monthly), complete a training program and be available to volunteer a minimum of four hours per week. Some ways you may volunteer are: working directly with children and adults in lessons, working with therapy horses and performing barn chores, fundraising, and helping with property enhancement and landscaping.

Hot ‘n Cold ’Tis time for a bit of this and that, a collection of random thoughts and musings collected over time and compiled for your reading pleasure - or displeasure, as the case may be. But seriously, I do hope you’ll indulge this meandering assortment of musings.

How about this weather? After waiting for what has seemed like months for spring to arrive - oh, wait… - it appears the season of growth has finally taken up residence over the shores of Long Island. Some might even go so far as to say time has fast forwarded right into summer; but we can be sure to experience a few more chilly days before it’s safe to put the jackets away for good. ’Til then, best to keep those flip flops on stand-by. There will be plenty of time for bare feet and bathing suits in the months to come.

In the meantime, the trees have begun to explode with blossoms, and everyone is busy sprucing up their gardens - or, in my case, balcony - with the latest annuals.

Year after year, I am struck by

all the pretty perennials at the nursery, and wind up purchasing far too many tulips, daffodils and hyacinths for someone who has nowhere for them to permanently reside. This year, I “scaled back” the floral collection; but still, as we speak, several tulip plants have already bloomed past their expiration and are in desperate need of a home for the offseason.

What can I say? I’m a sucker for spring.

I tend to have the same unhealthy obsession when it comes to indoor decor, as I have amassed quite the array of seasonal knick knacks, wreaths and doormats.

As soon as the months transition, there I am, back up on the step stool, peering into the infamous “Christmas Closet” for signs of the many spring, summer and autumn accents I have accumulated over the last five years. Back in March, I realized that, with the exception of Easter decorations, I am seriously lacking in anything not resembling a bunny, chick or egg.

Were my apartment able to hold one more thing, I’d say it was time

for a small spring shopping spree; but alas, it cannot. Well… maybe just one more thing.

Speaking of decor, my little finned friend, Norton von Spudley - “Spud,” “Norty,” “Baby Betta Extraordinaire” - seems to be flourishing in his bowl on my desk at home, nestled under “his” desk lamp and next to a rather striking likeness of himself in the form of a blown glass ornament. Often, I find him staring intently at the little turquoise fish in the hand-painted ball, as if pleading with it to come out and play. Nearly 18 monthsold, my Norty seems to be enjoying his time as my companion, which he expresses daily by trying to devour my finger as I sprinkle crushed pellets into his bowl. Table manners are not a strong point.

And that’s the way it stands in this second week of May, hovering on the brink of summer while shaking off the winter doldrums that have engrossed us for the last several months - the happy medium, if you will, of weather.

Enjoy it while it lasts. This, too, shall pass.

Lisa Gatti is the CEO & Founder of PalO-Mine Equestrian, Inc., a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations. Through persistence, hard work and a passion to serve others, Lisa opened Pal-O-Mine in 1995 as a 501(C)(3) non-profit.

Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week - and they continue to grow today! This organization sits on eight acres, with a 20-stall barn, handicapped accessible bathrooms, a new 100’ x 120’ indoor arena with state-of- theart footing and a rider hoisting system, and three outdoor riding arenas. They help an unbelievable amount of people, and their work is truly heartwarming.

Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy,

Lifeguards Honored At the April 24th meeting of the Bethpage Union Free School District Board of Education, the board and district administration honored three lifeguards and their instructor, Jeff Hack, for their service.

Thirteen current and former students who have completed their lifeguard certification training

serve as lifeguards for the swimming pool at Bethpage High School as part of the many year-round programs for students and the community. During a recent program, the three lifeguards on duty tested their training skills when a real-life situation unfolded.

Each of those on duty handled themselves so

calmly and professionally that many on site didn’t know a situation had occurred.

For their exemplary service, graduates Miguel Almanzar and Lorenzo Cusumano, together with current senior Monique Souza and Hack, were honored.

Rocking Individuality In observance of Earth Day, students at Kramer Lane Elementary School in the Bethpage Union Free School District created a beautiful rock garden that celebrated their individuality. The project was inspired by Linda Kranz’s book “Only One You,” which teaches simple life lessons that accompany illustrations of the author’s

rock paintings.

Leading up the event, students in Nancy Noskewicz’s art class painted their own rocks to symbolize their unique qualities. The project culminated outdoors on April 23rd, with all students placing their rocks in the new garden. As part of the celebration, fifth-graders also sang songs and recited

poems about individuality.

“We emphasized to the students that individual differences are to be respected and that being unique is what makes the world a wonderful place,” said Kramer Lane Principal Kerri McCarthy. “As the book states, ‘There is only one you in this great big world; make it a better place.’”

Distinguished Artist Concert

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino joined with his colleagues on the Town Board in recognizing Michael Pinzino for his recent efforts.

Michael is a six year-old Tiger Scout with Den 5 of Pack 253 in Oyster Bay who made an impactful decision when his Dad

shared a Facebook post that involved a stop sign that had been vandalized.

Michael located the stop sign and used a spray cleaner to restore the sign to its original condition.

Michael was very proud of the results and has indicated his interest in driving around the neighborhood with his

dad to clean other signs that may also have been vandalized.

Supervisor Saladino and his colleagues on the Oyster Bay Town Board joined in honoring Michael, presenting him with a citation and thanked him for keeping our community clean and beautiful.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently attended the Town of Oyster Bay Distinguished Artist Concert featuring the talents of Pat Farrell and The Cold Spring Harbor Band, A Billy Joel Tribute Band which took place at the Hicksville Public

Library.

Bethpage High School on May 19th. The students decided that messages of inspiration would assist the participating athletes in their goal to complete or win their event.

In addition to these signs, kindergarten and first-grade students colored inspirational ribbons, second-graders wrote messages on

“This has been a wonderful schoolwide effort,” social worker Sarah Glassman said.

Making Her Mark Fork Lane Elementary School third-grade teacher Christina Marconi was selected as Nassau County’s Teacher of the Year in the Applebee’s Above and “Bee”yond Teacher Essay Contest.

Marconi was recognized following nominating student Landon Lutrell’s winning essay about her exceptional dedication to students and commitment to her craft. As a result of the honor, Marconi was

presented with a $500 check from Applebee’s, which will be used to purchase supplies for her class next year, and Lutrell earned an end-of-the-year party at Applebee’s for his class in June.

Learning through Empathy Music students at Robbins Lane Elementary School in Syosset have been studying the music of the Civil Rights Movement to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the death of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. One of the most memorable songs they learned was “We Shall Overcome,” a gospel song that evolved into a prominent anthem for the movement. Students studied the lyrics using a Smithsonian historical recording from 1964. Each

student wrote a special verse of their own for the song, including Jeremy Schlenoff, whose personal lyric read, “We shall all have joy!” Students shared and performed their composition with their classmates.

Students also read the Caldecottwinning “Martin’s Big Words,” a stirring picture book that teaches empathy and the power of being an upstander. As a follow-up exercise, they shared 10 ways to be an upstander

and learned how to “keep their empathy radars up” by sitting with new friends at lunch, celebrating ways in which each person is unique, and using kind, positive words.

Additional audio recordings, books and poems, as well as excerpts from Dr. King’s speeches, were also used as resources for these activities, which were led by Robbins Lane music teacher Dr. Catherine da Silva.

Lupus Fundraiser Adina Rahman, a Bethpage High School sophomore, raised $600 to benefit the Lupus Alliance of Long Island/Queens.

This is the third year Adina has collected money for this worthy organization, garnering a total of $1,600

during that time. Adina said she was motivated to raise money for the alliance because of family members who struggle with the disease.

Patricia D’Accolti, executive director of the alliance, thanked Adina

for her generous donation and explained that the funds will contribute to the alliance’s efforts to promote education and public awareness as well as provide support-based programs for those living with lupus.

Hundreds of attendees from the Long Island medical and corporate community came out to the Garden City Hotel in Garden City on Thursday, April 26th to attend the American Heart Association’s 55th Annual Long Island Heart & Stroke Ball. The Long Island Heart Ball is an annual social event held to recognize outstanding accomplishments of individuals and companies in the area of cardiovascular science and leadership.

This year’s “Heart Rock” themed event was cochaired by Todd Fabricant, CEO, Todd Mitchell Associates and Renee Pope, Executive Director, KPMG, LLP. The 55th Annual Heart Ball honored Kimon Bekelis, MD, Catholic Health Services of Long Island who will receive the Neurological Science Honoree Stroke

Long Island at this world event following a series of FIRST LEGO League Expos that were held at Mineola and Longwood High Schools in early March.

FIRST® LEGO® League Team #92, the “Sea Lions” from Seaford, and Team #5357, “Imagination in a Nutshell” from Jericho, will both be competing at the FIRST LEGO League World Festival in Detroit, April 25th-28th. FIRST LEGO League Team #10425, the “Harborfields Library Purple LEGO Eaters” from Centerport, will represent long Island at the FIRST LEGO League North American Open Championship at LEGOLAND in Carlsbad, California, May 19th21st. FIRST LEGO League Team #15067, the “Robo Falcons” from Jericho, will attend the FIRST LEGO League Razorback Invitational in Fayetteville, Arkansas, May 16th-19th.

Each of these teams earned the opportunity to advance following the FIRST LEGO League SBPLI Long Island Championship at

Longwood High School on March 4th.

FIRST® Tech Challenge Team #5477, “Innovo” from Hewlett; Team #4137, the “Island Bots” from East Setauket; and Team #9421 the “Hydrofluoric Robotics” from Greenlawn; each competed at the FIRST Tech Challenge SuperRegional Championship in Scranton, Pennsylvania, March 16th-18th. These teams earned the chance to compete at that post-season event following the FIRST Tech Challenge SBPLI Long Island Championship at Smithtown High School on February 9th.

A total of 15 FIRST® Robotics Competition teams will represent Long Island at the FIRST World Championships in Detroit, April 25th-28th. Included among them is Team #810, the “Mechanical Bulls” from Smithtown, which won the SBPLI Long Island Regional FIRST Robotics Competition #2 on Saturday, April 14th, along with the event’s coveted Chairman’s Award and the Woodie Flowers

Team #6806, the “Mineola Wild Reds” from Mineola, the region’s only rookie team for 2018, took home the Rookie All-Star Award at Regional #2; while Team #2869, the “Regal Eagles,” earned the Engineering Inspiration Award at Regional #1; both will compete in the Championship.

Further FIRST Robotics Competition teams from the region set to participate in the FIRST World Championship are: Team #533, the “PSIcotics” from Lindenhurst and Team #2638, the “Rebels” from Great Neck, were each finalists in Regional #1; as well as Team #870, “Team R.I.C.E.” from Southold; Team #1468, the “J-Birds” from Hicksville; and Team #3171, the “Hurricanes” from Westhampton Beach, were each finalists

at Regional #2, and all secured Wildcard opportunities. Team #263, the “Sachem Aftershock” from Ronkonkoma; Team #527, the “Red Dragons” from Plainedge, whose member, Nicole Jacobsen, earned the Dean’s List Award; and Team #3950, “RoboGym Robotics” from Glen Head, which earned the Team Spirit Award; were each waitlisted following Regional #2 and will now also attend the Championships.

Team #4458, the “Infernobotix” from Center Moriches, which won the Tech Valley Regional in Troy, New York on March 17th; Team #329, the “Mohawks” from Patchogue-Medford, which was awarded the Engineering Inspiration Award at the Hudson Valley Regional in Suffern, New York on March 25th; and Team #3624, the “ThunderColts” from Huntington Station (Half Hollow Hills), which earned a wildcard spot following the Tech Valley Regional, are all also

competing at the 2018 World Championships.

Nassau Community College has partnered with On the Road Again motorcycle driving school to become the only site in Nassau County to offer Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) Training and License Waiver courses. NCC — an institution with more than 20,000 full-time, part-time, Workforce Development and continuing education students and a 225-acre campus located in the center of Long Island — takes seriously its role as a community resource, offering not only the best in higher education, but also a venue for much needed community services.

“There was no Motorcycle Safety Foundation Training and License Waiver program in Nassau County for over three years.

The New York State Motorcycle Safety Program, which is administered by the DMV, reached out to me to ask that I open a training site in Nassau County,” said Steve Bertoline, owner of On the Road Again. Bertoline added that he was grateful

to Nassau Community College for allowing this important community service to be sited at its beautiful and conveniently located campus.

On the Road Again is a Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) licensed and MSF certified driving school.

It provides motorcycle driver training exclusively. The company’s services include individual training for novice and experienced riders, a DMV Road Test Service, and courses for experienced riders to hone their skills.

Its primary offering is the MSF Basic RiderCourse, which is a training course that provides a license waiver upon successful completion.

On the Road Again was founded in 1993 with two motorcycles and one instructor. It has since grown to a staff of 20 employees, 30 motorcycles and two locations — its original training site in Suffolk County at Suffolk County Community College, and now the new site in Nassau County at NCC.

The school’s talented staff includes experienced professional motorcyclists from a wide variety of specialties. It trained about 1,000 new and experienced riders in 2017, and with the new location hopes to double that number in 2018.

On the Road Again uses curriculum created by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation, which has been in existence since 1974 and is sponsored by major motorcycle manufacturers.

This curriculum is regularly updated and internationally recognized.

To date, 7.5 million riders have been trained using the MSF curriculum.

More than 400,000 students enroll annually at nearly 2,700 sites, with 9,900 certified instructors (“RiderCoaches”) to guide them.

The mission of On the Road Again is to turn out the most educated and skilled riders on the road, thereby improving safety not only for motorcyclists, but also for all road users.

Tip Hotline Nassau County Legislator James D. Kennedy and members of the Nassau County Legislature unanimously approved legislation that requires the Nassau County Police Commissioner to establish a hotline to receive tips regarding illegal drug activity and authorizes the Police Department to offer a standing reward of up to $5,000 for anyone who provides information

that leads to the arrest and conviction of a drug dealer in Nassau County.

An individual may provide tips via text, internet, or telephone, and his her or identity will remain anonymous. The standing reward is funded by asset forfeiture funds held by the Nassau County Police Department.

“Our police work tirelessly to rid this County of the scourge of opioids,”

Legislator Kennedy said.

“This tip hotline will be a great benefit to the police and aid them in their work.”

The Office of the Nassau County Comptroller hosted its 6th annual Comptroller’s Entrepreneurial Challenge (Challenge) on April 25th at the Theodore Roosevelt Executive and Legislative Building with a new theme focusing on Civic Innovation.

The Challenge consisted of student-led teams from public schools across Nassau County creating a fictional organization’s comprehensive business plan and elevator pitch.

More than a dozen schools and 26 teams took part in the event, with an overarching theme of Civic Innovation and two categories: Technology and Social Entrepreneurship.

The program was geared to inspire students to not only create a successful business plan, but also give back and make a positive impact in their communities.

“Our team is working around the clock to bring innovation to Nassau County, and that’s why we updated the Challenge to have two categories this year and provide students with different backgrounds and passions an opportunity to get involved,” Nassau

Disaster Recovery Deadline The U.S. Small Business Administration reminds businesses of all sizes, private nonprofit organizations, homeowners, and renters in New York of the deadline to submit disaster loan applications for damages caused by flooding on January 15th-16th, 2018.

The deadline to submit applications for physical damage is May 29th, 2018.

Low-interest disaster loans are available in Clinton County and the contiguous counties of Essex and Franklin in New

York; and Chittenden and Grand Isle counties in Vermont.

Businesses of any size and nonprofit organizations may borrow up to $2 million to repair or replace damaged or destroyed real estate, machinery and equipment, inventory, and other business assets.

For small businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, small aquaculture businesses and private, nonprofit organizations, the SBA offers Economic Injury Disaster Loans (EIDLs)

to help meet working capital needs caused by the disaster. EIDL assistance is available regardless of whether the business suffered any physical property damage.

Loans up to $200,000 are available to homeowners to repair or replace damaged or destroyed real estate.

Homeowners and renters are eligible for loans up to $40,000 to repair or replace damaged or destroyed personal property.

American Stroke Month During American Stroke Month, May, the American Heart Association/ American Stroke Association encourages Long Island residents to join together to end the leading cause of death in New York.

Despite striking more than 7 million adults in the United States annually and being a leading cause of serious, long-term disability, globally, stroke is largely preventable and treatable.

According to the American Stroke Association, eighty percent of strokes are preventable, but encourages people to act now. Prevention is key.

High blood pressure is the most common controllable cause of stroke. If you have it, you need to check it and keep it under control to help prevent a stroke.

If you’ve had a stroke, you should ask your doctor for

guidance on preventing a second one.

Normal blood pressure is below 120/80 mm Hg. Nearly half of all adults in the U.S. have high blood pressure, according to recent AHA/ASA Hypertension Guidelines, which redefine high blood pressure as 130/80 mm Hg. Eating healthfully, being active and, for some stroke survivors, following an aspirin regimen can help prevent another stroke.

Education is also key when it comes to treating stroke. Immediate medical care is crucial to access lifesaving treatment in many cases. The American Stroke Association’s Together to End Stroke® initiative, sponsored nationally by Medtronic teaches the acronym F.A.S.T. to help people to recognize the most common stroke warning signs and what to do if one occurs:

F - Face Drooping: Does one side of the face droop or is it numb? Ask the person to smile.

A - Arm Weakness: Is one arm weak or numb? Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?

S - Speech Difficulty: Is speech slurred, are they unable to speak, or are they hard to understand?

Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence like, “The sky is blue.” Is the sentence repeated correctly?

T - Time to call 911: If the person shows any of these symptoms, even if the symptoms go away, call 911 and get them to the hospital immediately.

All artwork will be on display until June 11th and for sale, with 30% of the proceeds being donated to the Preservation Society by the artist. *** Horseshoe Crab Program Saturday, June 2nd, at 7 p.m.

Follow one of the presentday Lighthouse Keepers on his rounds. This bottom to top tour takes you from the auxiliary generator and the Light Keepers workshop in the basement of the Keeper’s Quarters to the beacon in the lantern room of the lighthouse tower.

Includes a tour of the Lens Building, which houses the original first order Fresnel Lens, and the Boat House.

Tour takes approximately 2-1/2 hours. The cost is $15 for FILP members; $20 for non-members.

Art Students Unite The students, faculty and staff of Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) came together this month to show their solidarity in the face of tragedy. Fellow artisans joined efforts to create a Peace Garden in the LIHSA courtyard in honor of school shooting victims everywhere.
