Scholarships Awarded Teachers Federal Credit Union (TFCU), one of the country’s largest credit unions, awarded two $5,000 Nicholas Maletta Memorial Scholarships to SUNY Old Westbury students Jack Benjamin and Magdalena Zielinska. The educational scholarship reflects TFCU’s ongoing efforts to provide support and encouragement to local students within the

communities it serves. Magdalena Zielinska, a junior, is an accounting major. She is a graduate of Lindenhurst High School and lives in Lindenhurst. TFCU also awarded the Nicholas Maletta Memorial Scholarship to Magdalena in 2016 when she was a sophomore at SUNY Old Westbury. Jack Benjamin, a junior, is also majoring

in accounting. He is a graduate of Upper Room Christian School in Dix Hills and lives in Deer Park. Nicholas Maletta, for whom this scholarship is named, began serving on TFCU’s Board of Directors in 1983. In 1991 he was elected Vice Chairman, a position he held until his passing in 2012. In recognition of

his 29 years of selfless volunteer work, the $5,000 Nicholas Maletta Memorial Scholarship Award was established for students who have graduated from a Long Island high school and who are enrolled in SUNY Old Westbury’s School of Business. “The recipients of the two TFCU Nicholas Maletta Memorial Scholarship awards are on the road to

achieving their educational goals. A strong academic foundation is critical for long-term career success. RETURNING TO ROOTS - John Sazaklis, a New York Times bestselling author and former student of Fork Lane Elementary School in the Hicksville Public School District, returned to his alma mater to speak to students about his experiences and thanked teachers for laying the foundation of a sound education. At the April 24th business meeting, the Bethpage Board of Education appointed Nicholas Jantz as the new principal of Bethpage High School, effective July 1st. Jantz replaces current Principal Michael Spence, who will assume the role of assistant superintendent for instruction for the district. Jantz has been the assistant principal at John F. Kennedy Middle School since the fall 2014. Prior to working in Bethpage, he

served as a social studies teacher for 10 years in the East Meadow School District. He has been deeply involved in the entire school program at JFK and the Bethpage school community through his role in supporting students and teachers. While at JFK, he has focused on improving school and community relations and the district’s social and emotional learning. “We are pleased to appoint Nicholas Jantz as the next principal

of Bethpage High School,” said Board of Education President Michael Kelly. “Since arriving in Bethpage, Mr. Jantz has become an important member of our administrative team, and we look forward to his continued success in this next step in his career at Bethpage.” I n c o m i n g Superintendent of Schools David Schneider added, “Mr. Jantz will be a great asset to our high school and district by now providing that ongoing support to all of our high school students, parents and staff.” Jantz holds a Bachelor of Arts in history and secondary education from Saint Peter’s University, a Master of Science in teaching literacy from Touro College, and a school building leader certificate from The College of Saint Rose. 50 YEARS OF SERVICE - Oyster Bay Town Supervisor proudly recognized Chief William Sarnelli for 50 years of service with the Hicksville Fire Department. William Sarnelli was bestowed Honorary Chief status in recognition of his long and distinguished tenure with the Department. Supervisor Saladino is pictured with Councilman Thomas P. Hand and Nassau County Legislator Rose Walker in presenting William Sarnelli with a citation and honoring him for his 50 years of active service to the fire department and to the community, and his continuing contributions in the years ahead.

Osteoporosis ( N A P S ) — Osteoporosis—bone loss— is a serious condition that half of all women and many men can expect to develop at some time in their lives. Fortunately, it can be detected and treated. In fact, women who have a bone density scan have 35 percent fewer hip fractures

than those who do not. The problem is only 23 percent of eligible patients are scanned. The experts at the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) say that if you’re a woman over 65 or a man over 70 or if you’re over 50, postmenopausal and have risk factors for osteoporosis, you should

probably talk to your doctor or other health care provider about getting a bone density test, especially if you’ve never had one. Many doctors are learning more about this testing device at www. hologic.com.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently honored Matthew Russo of Bethpage, who is a civil engineer with the Town of Oyster Bay’s Department of Public Works, and who was recognized as the Town’s “Employee of the Month” for April. The recognition

program is a new initiative designed by Supervisor Saladino to recognize outstanding members of the Town’s workforce who routinely go above and beyond the call of duty in the performance of their jobs. Matthew has established a distinguished record of excellence

working diligently and demonstrating a selfless commitment to the Town’s residents. Supervisor Saladino proudly presented Matthew with a citation and thanked him for going above and beyond to help the Town in its efforts to remediate the Grumman-Navy plume.

Triskaidekaphobia: fear of the number 13 I’ve known many people with an aversion to this perceived “unlucky” number, whether serving as a date of particular significance or - the more common superstition - when it should happen to fall on a Friday, of all days. Personally, I’ve taken special care to note any particularly negative occurrences on these infrequent juxtapositions of day and date, with thankfully few to report. Just another day, as they say. And with that, today - May 2nd - I commemorate the 13th anniversary of my start date here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers. Over one dozen years ago, I began my journey into the world of journalism, straight from college. At the time, thirteen years would have certainly seemed like an eternity to spend in any one establishment. Think about

it - even school, which often seems like an infinite chunk of time, is divided into segments of elementary, junior high and senior high. College, if it follows, is usually segmented into four-year intervals. Thirteen years… well that’s an entirely different level of commitment, is it not? And yet, even in the workforce, time tends to separate into stages. It begins with the formative years of finding your footing in a particular field, still unsure of what the job entails and what your responsibilities will include. Everything is new and exciting as you realize - hey, I’m really doing this! These are followed by the years of transition, when positions may be altered, new projects will come and go, and you begin to discover your particular strengths and weaknesses en route to finding your true passion. Thirteen years in, and I

am still in the process of realizing those aspects of the vast field of journalism which really inspire me. I am open to learn, eager to explore and always looking to improve upon those skills I originally honed all those decades ago. I believe this process is never complete; those who have worked in a particular field for twice as long as I have can surely attest to this fact. Who’s to say that anyone has to stay with one particular venture for a lifetime anyway? The world is constantly evolving, as are we; and the nature of most careers tends to necessitate a versatility that didn’t always exist prior. We all have untapped skills to be utilized, curiosities to indulge and talents to cultivate. So, here’s to 13, a number like any other, if you ask me. May it signify all the experience gained thus far, and the adventures yet to unfold.

It all started with a good book... As I sat down with Lisa Gatti, CEO & Founder of Pal-O-Mine Equestrian, Inc., I had the privilege to learn about what her organization does to help those in need, as well as how it all began. PalO-Mine Equestrian is a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations. Lisa’s mother was a special education teacher and her father worked for a book publishing company. She was greatly influenced by both of their professions. Lisa grew up knowing she loved horses, but she really wanted to become a teacher and work with children in need. Her father would often send her books while she was away at college, and one day she received a book titled Palomino, by Danielle Steel. As she read through the pages, she became inspired by what was written about: a ranch that was formed to help people through equine therapy. From that point on, she was certain that was exactly what she wanted to do with her life. Through persistence, hard work and a passion to serve others, Lisa Gatti opened Pal-O-Mine in 1995 as a 501(C)(3) non-profit. Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week - and they continue to grow today! This organization sits on eight acres, with a 20-stall barn, handicapped accessible bathrooms, a new 100’ x 120’ indoor arena with state-ofthe-art footing and a rider hoisting system, and three outdoor riding arenas. They help an unbelievable amount of people, and their work is truly heartwarming. Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy,

Traumatic Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida, Genetic Disorders and Emotional Disturbances. Every day, they have a different school drop off children at their location to benefit from their organization; they also offer group programs, individual lessons, corporate workshops and a program specifically designed for military members. If you are someone who faces any sort of disability or an emotional or vulnerable problem, please visit their website to learn more about how they can help you - and don’t hesitate to get help! Volunteers are the backbone of PalO-Mine, and there are many different ways to get involved. All volunteers must be at least 16 years of age, attend a volunteer orientation (orientations are held monthly), complete a training program and be available to volunteer a minimum of four hours per week. Some ways you may volunteer are: working directly with children and adults in lessons, working with therapy horses and performing barn chores, fundraising, and helping with property enhancement and landscaping. Pal-O-Mine has two major fundraising events that are coming up in June. One is their 16th annual Day at the Races, which will be on June 8th at the Belmont Race Track. This is held the day before the Belmont Stakes and is a wonderful outing, offering lunch, a premium open bar and door prizes. Their 10th annual Golf Outing, Par Fore the Horse, will be held on June 25th at Southward Ho Country Club in Bay Shore. This will include golfing, brunch, course refreshments, an open bar, a cocktail hour, dinner, gifts and prizes. Both of these events have sponsorship opportunities and are open to the public (tickets must be purchased). Lastly, Pal-O-Mine features a Wish List on their website, which lists items they use every day that you can donate! Naval Sea Cadet Program

Theodore Roosevelt Division, “Cadets might not even have a driver’s license but in training they may be at the helm of a multi-million dollar U.S. Navy warship. The learning and leadership opportunities are quite astounding.” Commander Woodward knows well the inspiration provided by the Naval Sea Cadet program. He served in the U.S. Army, the Department of Defense and as a Federal Agent, but it was his formative years as a teenage Naval Sea Cadet that helped shape his desire for public service. He carries on that torch of inspiration at the Theodore Roosevelt Division, which is among four Sea Cadet divisions in Nassau and Suffolk Counties; others are based in Farmingdale, Northport and West Sayville. Each also has a junior cadet program for ages 11 to 13. At the Coast Guard Station in East Moriches,cadets learn leadership, organization and discipline and are also instilled with the Navy values of honor, courage and commitment. The division’s cadets currently number 27 young men and women, with the command staff consisting of both veteran and civilian leaders. In addition to training on Long Island, cadets are offered advanced training such as aboard naval vessels, at submarine school, military law enforcement training, and there’s even a Navy SEAL challenge. Training is

also integrated into local communities, with cadets serving as Honor Guard formations leading parades or sending off WWII veterans on Honor Flights, or the cadets might serve as sentries for a 5K-run, paint a community building, and more. Added Woodward,“Long Island has a rich maritime heritage, so it’s only natural that the Naval Sea Cadets have a strong presence in our communities.” Naval Sea Cadets attend the monthly weekend drills dressed in standard Navy fatigues, as authorized by the Secretary of the Navy. They are also issued formal uniforms including summer dress-whites topped with the iconic “dixie cup” (white canvas hat with upturned brim). The Naval Sea Cadet Corps was founded by the Naval League of the United States in 1958 at the request of the Department of the Navy. The Theodore Roosevelt Division, a non-profit organization, is named in honor of the 26th president of the United States who was a Long Island resident, Medal of Honor recipient, and had a rich naval history including serving as Assistant Secretary of the Navy. Seventy years ago, the U.S. Navy requested that an organization of young sea cadets be formed to “create a favorable image of the Navy on the part of American youth.” The Theodore Roosevelt Division of the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps follows through with that edict while carrying on Long Island’s rich and enduring maritime heritage. Stamp Out Hunger Island Harvest Food Bank is once again teaming up with the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) and the United States Postal Service (USPS) for the 26th annual Stamp Out Hunger campaign on Saturday, May 12th. As the nation’s largest single-day food drive, postal carriers across the country will collect nonperishable food items donated by generous postal customers. On Long

Island, all food collected will help Island Harvest Food Bank to provide supplemental food support to more than 300,000 Long Islanders who are at risk of hunger and food insecurity. “Participating in Stamp Out Hunger is easy,” says Randi Shubin Dresner, president and CEO of Island Harvest Food Bank. “Simply leave nonperishable food items in a bag next to your mailbox before your

regularly scheduled mail delivery on Saturday, May 12th, and your USPS letter carrier will do the rest.” Nonperishable food items needed include canned goods, cereal, pasta, rice, boxed juices and shelf-stable milk (please, no glass items). All food donated on Long Island will help replenish Island Harvest Food Bank’s network of food pantries, soup kitchens and other emergency feeding

Moving Forward Examples of Zen are everywhere: in flower arranging, creating a Zen garden; meditating; achieving a goal that you worked hard for; watching a glorious sunset...any activity where your body, mind and the environment blend together in unison. To reinforce the Zen concept, I would suggest that you find a basic book on the practice of Zen. There, you will find a series of guiding principles that will aid you on your journey to enlightenment. At this point, some personal examples of Zen might be helpful... Weather permitting, late in the afternoon, I watch the sunset from my deck following a short meditation period. Studying the wooded landscape, I notice the wonders of nature abound; thirsty birds drinking from my bird bath, several squirrels skillfully jumping from tree to tree, sounds of birds calling to one another and the beauty of observing new buds forming on many plants in my Zen garden. After a while, I begin to feel an inward sense of peace. A while ago, I needed to put down slates in my lawn on the side of my house, from the front to the back, a distance of

The Power of Zen approximately 30 feet. Once I purchased the slates, I began to think how they should be placed. After a while, I remembered a Zen principle on life - that the journey through life is never smooth, with many twists and turns. Following that principle, I placed each slate in an uneven pattern, which gave me a nice sense of satisfaction. To help you get started, I would suggest finding a quiet place where you will not be disturbed. If possible, start with a short meditation {refer back to my second column on the subject}, then ponder the following questions: Who am I? Am I living my life to the fullest? What are my important goals in life, and how many have I achieved? How can I become a better person? What gives me the most satisfaction? While my work life pays the bills, how much time have I spent with family and friends? Do I still have time to “smell the roses”? The next step would be to self-examine those factors which might get in the way of achieving the goals listed in the above paragraph. For example, let’s take the first one listed above – Who am I? This takes into

account a broad spectrum, which can spill over to many of the others listed above. My personal example is as follows: Once a year (usually around late September), I drive out to the eastern end of Long Island where the beaches have already been vacated by the summer tourists. I jog for about one mile (on the hard sand), then rest on a sand dune. At that point, I ponder three questions: (1) Where am I now - in my life, my personal goals, my marriage, my job and my comfort zone? (2) Where do I want to be in three, six and 12 months from now? (3) What is my plan to get there? Space limitations in this column prevent me from going into further detail, but it should give you enough “food for thought” to start your journey. The practice of Zen and its road to self-fulfillment takes much practice and dedication. It is a process of discovering your inner self and, in doing so, achieving a more meaningful life. Like the journey through life, expect twists and turns, achievements and disapointments, but always stay on the path. Why not start moving forward now? Peace

By way of background, the study and application of Zen is perhaps the most challenging to write about. Although numerous books and articles abound, there are many folks out there who know nothing about the subject. It is this group who is my main focus in exploring the power of Zen. Further, this article adds on to my second column (written a few weeks ago), The Art and Pleasure of Meditation. Let’s begin with a definition of Zen. Simply put, it is a different way of looking at life. It is not a religion, nor any type of cult. However, through the study of Zen over the years, many people have found that it brings a deeper sense of fulfillment, a greater understanding of yourself and others, and could be a turning point in your life. It’s important to note that I am not a Zen Master – merely someone who started my training while I was serving with the military in the Far East, and my studies have continued to this day. By delving deeper into Zen through reading, and continuing practical usage, the real meaning and application will come to you...but one must be patient.

So, when it came time for the second-grader in Julie Schmidlapp’s class to select a historical American subject for the Kramer Lane Elementary School Living Wax Museum, it was a no-brainer for him. He chose famous astronomer and NASA contributor Carl Sagan.

“I’m very interested in astronomy and enjoy reading books about him,” McCarthy said. The museum culminated a second-grade project at the school that enforced students’ skills in research, writing, history and creativity. Once they had selected their historical figures, the students researched them in the school library and online. “They had to complete an independent report and

On April 12th, Syosset High School hosted author, professor and historian Dr. Marc Aronson. After reading his book “WitchHunt: Mysteries of the Salem Witch Trials,” ninthgrade students gathered for a culminating event and an interactive discussion of the Puritan Society, witch hunts, and the societal effects of silencing and ostracizing minority community members.

A kickoff assembly featured the chorale students singing an adaptation of “Where Is The Love?,” a song by the Black Eyed Peas, accompanied by an interpretive dance performance and sign language students signing the lyrics. In breakout sessions proceeding the assembly, Dr. Aronson demonstrated the contemporary relevance of the witch trials that

occurred in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692, and emphasized the importance of speaking up for what is right. He also discussed how young citizens can have a big impact on society, and the importance of taking an active role and voicing opinions in governmental affairs. The events were coordinated by Sarah Wasser, library media specialist. Dr. Aronson holds a Ph.D. in American History from New York University and is the recipient of numerous awards including the LMP award for editing, the ALAN award for outstanding contributions to the field of adolescent literature, and the Robert F. Forty-five members of the Peers as Leaders and Buddy Club at Harry B. Thompson Middle School in Syosset are strengthening their reach as role models to make a greater impact on their school. The students underwent in-school training by representatives of the Anti-Defamation League through the World of Difference program, to understand and address the challenges faced by students of all backgrounds. During the sessions, held in the middle school library, students conversed, roleplayed and participated in different exercises to gain a greater appreciation for diversity, while making new connections and

identifying similarities in each other that may not have been obvious before. They are now using what they learned to embed acceptance into the culture of the school. This includes encouraging others to speak up and stand up to bullying behavior. “I think this is truly unique and amazing that we are given the time to do this,” said eighthgrader Aanya Bedi, who is embracing her role as an ally to classmates in need of peer support. “I am having a great time learning about everyone. This is great training.” Through Peers as Leaders and the Buddy Club, coadvised by Randi Bloom and Alison deLauzon, many of the students have

already solidified their statures as ambassadors. Members have assisted incoming fifth-graders and newly arriving sixthgraders, helped to promote and coordinate Red Ribbon Week activities and overall, have served as upstanding voices for the silent student minority who may feel alone or in need of friendly encouragement. Last spring, the AntiDefamation League recognized HBT as a No Place for Hate School based on its efforts to promote multiculturalism and thwart bullying. The organization will announce its 2018 No Place for Hate Schools later this spring.
