These scholarships are provided with funding support by The Joel Foundation

Located on LIHSA’s Syosset Campus, the Summer Arts Academy, which runs in partnership with Hofstra University’s Continuing Education, offers aspiring youngsters (grades 7-12) a one-of-a-kind opportunity to develop their skills as musicians and performers. The program takes place from June 26-July 21, 2023, 9 a.m.-3 p.m., weekdays. Students must provide their own transportation. Interested students must submit an audition video.

Local Teens Cycle To Support Pediatric Cancer Research

Shout out to the more than 90 Syosset High School and middle school Gold Ribbon Riders teens who raised hundreds

of thousands of dollars this season to support pediatric cancer research/ Memorial Sloan Kettering. These students recently

participated in a recent Cycle for Survival event at Equinox-Woodbury.

Cycle for Survival is “the movement to beat rare

cancers” where all the funds raised “support pioneering research and lifesaving clinical trials at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.” The team thanks all of their generous donors.

As background, the Syosset-based Gold Ribbon Riders were

founded in 2018 by Jamie and Jonathan Weiss

“to support pediatric cancer research in honor of their daughter, a neuroblastoma survivor who was diagnosed at 10 months old. Their mission is to unite their friends, neighbors, family members, and community

behind a mission dedicated to supporting children who are battling cancer. They launched the Teen Initiative in 2020 to empower young adults to fundraise in ways that are relevant to them and inspire others to join the cause.”

Both were recently recognized as Finalists in the prestigious Regeneron Science Talent Competition, which included a $25,000 prize for each of them. Winners in the competition typically spend weeks in university laboratories and work closely with adult faculty to develop complex and meaningful projects. Emily and Kevin were selected from 300 semifinalist scholars and a total applicant pool of nearly 2,000. Finalists are considered to be among America’s brightest students in science and math and represent some the area’s most outstanding schools.

Long Island (RTLI) is a nonprofit organization, headquartered in Farmingdale, serving Nassau County and most of Su olk County. As an a liate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together, their mission is repairing homes, revitalizing communities and rebuilding lives.

To accomplish their vision of safe and healthy homes for everyone, they provide free essential home safety repairs and modifications for economicallydisadvantaged homeowners, whether they are older adults, veterans, families or persons with a disability or limited mobility.

The beneficiaries of RTLI’s work, lowincome homeowners struggling to get by, are so appreciative of the repairs and modifications that this organization does to keep them safe and improve their quality of life. “I was desperate,” said a widow of a Navy veteran who welcomed RTLI’s helping hand. “Now I have so much less stress and a more comfortable and safer house.”

Another recent client said, “Thank you for treating my home like it was yours. You all showed professionalism, caring and impeccable workmanship. You made my home more livable and safer. You are doing a beautiful thing and should be very proud.” These words lift the spirits of the hardworking RTLI volunteers.

Their small o ce in Farmingdale has only one employee, so their volunteers are really a significant part of what they do. “Our volunteers are the heart and soul of our organization,” said Stella Hendrickson, President of RTLI. “Almost all are retired. They give their time, their talents, their expertise and their hearts

to those who need a helping hand.”

The volunteer teams work tirelessly to help our neighbors, traveling throughout Long Island, using their own cars and tools. They come from all walks of life and professions, from teachers to principals, business owners, social workers, administrative assistants, accountants and truck drivers. The list goes on and on, but they all have one thing in common; their commitment to do the right thing, give back, lend a hand and be there for someone in need.

Here are ways you can get involved:

•If you know someone who may benefit from their services, have them call the RTLI o ce at 631.777.7894, Monday – Friday, to see if they qualify for the free program.

•Join the RTLI team! Volunteers can sign up at rebuildingtogetherli.org/ volunteer-today. Currently they are looking for individuals who are fluent in Spanish and for an o ce person, particularly if they are familiar with Salesforce. Additionally, if you are handy with tools, the Nassau and Su olk crew teams are always looking for more help.

•Donate at rebuildingtogetherli. org. RTLI relies on the donations of our neighbors, some grants and corporate sponsorships, as they do not receive any government funding.

•RTLI encourages local business to get involved and sponsor a project. The organization can find the right project for your business to sponsor and you can then promote your generosity on social media to show your commitment to improving the health and safety of someone in need locally.

When we work together, we can bring about transformational change quickly in our communities.

Steve Labriola announce that new Pickleball Courts are coming soon to parks throughout the Town of Oyster Bay. Due to popular demand, the Town is constructing new Pickleball Courts at John Burns Park in Massapequa, Field of Dreams and Anchor Park in Massapequa, Allen Park in Farmingdale, SyossetWoodbury Community Park, Plainview-Old Bethpage Community Park, and Centre Island Beach in Bayville. Courts are anticipated to open to the public in September 2023.

“Pickleball is a fun

sport for all ages that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping pong. It’s become incredibly popular in our Town, with seniors and families playing daily at our existing courts in Massapequa and Bethpage,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Due to this popular demand, I’m proud to announce that the Town of Oyster Bay is building new Pickleball courts for all residents to enjoy.”

Pickleball is played with a wooden paddle and lightweight plastic ball and can include two, three, or four players. The dimensions and layout closely resemble a badminton court,

which is considerably smaller than a tennis court. Rules of the game are somewhat similar to tennis. These new Pickleball courts come in addition to existing Town courts located at H. Garrick Williams Park in Massapequa and behind the Bethpage Library in Bethpage.

“Pickleball is a very fun, social and healthy activity for the whole family and these new courts will be a welcome addition to the community. So, grab your sneakers and paddle, and get ready to play one of the world’s fastest growing sports at a new court near you!” added Councilman Labriola.

Known to millions as “MJF,” the Town also proclaimed “Maxwell Jacob Friedman Day” in the Town of Oyster Bay in

honor of the Champ, who, despite his international success, is exceedingly proud of his hometown roots in the Town of Oyster Bay and has given back through numerous charitable endeavors.

Supervisor Saladino stated, “We are proud to recognize All Elite Wrestling Champion Maxwell Jacob Friedman for his charitable efforts to combat anti-Semitism and end Jew hate around the world. A Plainview-

Old Bethpage JFK High School graduate, MJF has demonstrated unwavering determination, skill and showmanship in becoming the AEW Champion, where his prowess in the ring and his undeniable charisma have made him a professional wrestling icon and one of the biggest box office draws in the sport. have demonstrated exceptional skill on their instruments and have been dedicated members of the Hicksville High School band program for several years. Hicksville Supervisor of Fine Arts Chad Wyman points out, “This selection is a testament to their hard work and dedication to their craft and love of music. Both Samantha and Brandon will be going to college majoring in Music next year,

so this honor is what I can only imagine will be one of many.”

The district is incredibly proud of Brandon and Samantha and wishes them the best of luck as they represent Hicksville High School and our community at the annual conference of the National Association for Music Education in Rochester, New York in April.

. Our Oyster Bay Memorial Day parade will start marching at 10:30 a.m. (“staging assembly” starts at 10:00 a.m.) - and starting our procession from along South Street and march into our town center. We make a right turn on East Main Street and march to Ships Point Lane and make a left turn towards the bay. Our “VETERAN” parade participants break-away from the parade group and proceed to the water-front area where our veterans will hold a brief Memorial Ceremony with our theme for this remembrance: “For all of those – who were lost at sea”.

after a brief “break” –and we march into town – onto Audrey Avenue and up to our Oyster Bay Town Hall West area where our Memorial Day Remembrance Ceremony will take place – led from the “GAZEBO” … starting at about 11:15 a.m. Bob Selby will be the host and lead the remembrance ceremony from the gazebo. Featured as part of our ceremony, we’re honored to have our Oyster Bay High School Band – led by Mr. Matthew Sisia –providing patriotic tunes for our holiday.

Former Hicksville Water District Superintendent Richard Woodwell Dies At 93

Woodwell Served As Superintendent For 15 Years

The Hicksville Water District (HWD) is saddened to announce that former District Superintendent Richard Woodwell has passed away at age 93. Affectionately called “Woody” by those at the District, Woodwell served as HWD Superintendent from 1983 to 1998, capping off more than 50 years of service to the Hicksville community. A Syosset resident, he is survived by his son, Justin.

“Woody’s passing weighs heavily on the hearts of his family, friends and those of us

here at the Hicksville Water District,” said HWD Chairman William Schuckmann. “I had the honor of working for Woody for many years and succeeding him as Superintendent following his retirement in 1998. He was a great leader, person and friend who truly put everything he had into ensuring that our community received the high-quality water service it deserves.”

Woodwell was the definition of a “ladderclimber” at the HWD. He started out as a laborer in 1947, a time in which the Hicksville community

was undergoing massive expansion. He would eventually become a meter reader, then water serviceman, then water plant operator before finally becoming Superintendent. His passion for service was not exclusive to the Hicksville community, as he also served his country during the Korean War and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. To TOBAY Beach On April 30th Hundreds Of Vehicles To Participate, Trophy Presentation, Free Concert & Free Admission For Spectators

Long Island’s largest and most premier car show experience returns to TOBAY Beach on Sunday, April 30th, from 11am to 4pm. “Car Show Long Island” features hundreds of automobiles, trucks, military vehicles, and emergency service vehicles. A live concert performed by That 70’s Band will take place during the day, followed by trophy presentations. The event is free for spectators.

Supervisor Saladino stated, “Whether you’re a proud classic car owner or you want to see the latest and greatest automobiles in the world, Car Show Long Island is the place to be! With a diverse range of vehicles showcased, car enthusiasts will have the opportunity to admire and interact with some of

the most impressive cars around. This free familyfun event is a perfect way to spend the day, all with the beautiful backdrop of TOBAY Beach. Spectators can check out cool cars, vendors, exhibits and enjoy live music while surrounded by Long Island’s best classic, muscle, antique and exotic cars.”

Car Show Long Island’s 2023 TOBAY Beach Spring Classic features some of the hottest and most classic cars in the tri-state region. While enjoying live music performed by That 70’s Band and great eats from the Food Truck Corral presented by Eagle Chevy Performance, thousands of spectators are expected throughout the day to get up close and personal with Long Island’s best classic, muscle, antique and exotic cars. will be awarded in each class, and children will have a say when deeming which rides are their favorites in the Kids’ Choice Award.
