Bike to Work Parade The Long Island alternative transportation advocacy organization, Car-less Long Island, is holding its second annual Long Island “Bike-to-Work Parade” on Saturday, April 29th. Gathering for the parade begins as 9 a.m. at Hofstra University’s North campus. The parade will follow

a 6.5-mile loop beginning and ending at Hofstra University. There will be a route for pedestrians, disabled participants, cyclists with younger children and cyclists who simply would prefer a shorter ride. Participants are encouraged to dress up and adorn their bicycles. There will be a festival with prizes for

the best costumes and bikes at the end of the parade. The festival leads into Hofstra University’s Dutch festival with food and flower vendors, music and rides for small children. “There are many reasons why Long Islanders should support alternative forms of transportation, such as

biking,” says Car-less Long Island founder and chairwoman, Sylvia Silberger. “Clearly it is much more environmentally friendly and bicycle commuters are able to incorporate a healthier active life-style into their daily routine. But also, it reduces vehicular congestion, benefitting

all motorists, and many studies have shown that walk- and bike-ability helps local businesses thrive. There are also many Long Islanders who need alternative forms of transportation because they are unable to drive or own their own cars and we all benefit if everyone as access to the transportation necessary

Making a Difference Bowlers, sponsors and spectators recently came together at Farmingdale Lanes in Farmingdale to make a difference in the lives of children and adults with special needs, raising more than $22,000 to benefit Adults and Children with Learning and Developmental Disabilities, Inc. (ACLD). ACLD Foundation’s second annual Bowling For An Enviable Life FUNdraiser brought people supporting ACLD together, with members of the ACLD family joining ACLD partners and the community for some bowling fun while helping ACLD pursue its mission to provide children and adults

with autism, learning and other developmental disabilities with opportunities for pursuing enviable lives, increasing their independence and fostering supportive relationships within the community. “For the second consecutive year, the people ACLD supports and those who help us pursue our mission enjoyed an incredibly special and rewarding afternoon,” said ACLD Executive Director Robert C. FRATERNAL ORDER - Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph S. Saladino and Oyster Bay Town Councilman Louis B. Imbroto recently attended a meeting hosted by New York State Fraternal Order of Police, Nassau Police Lodge 69. The Fraternal Order of Police is the world’s largest organization of sworn law enforcement officers, with more than 325,000 members. Nearly 400 fire departments across New York State have already signed up for the seventh annual RecruitNY weekend, a major initiative of the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY). On April 29th30th, firehouses across the State will open their doors to the public in an effort to increase membership in the volunteer fire service. Members of the public are invited to visit their local firehouses, where volunteer firefighters will be conducting tours of their facilities, demonstrating firefighting

techniques, and allowing visitors to try on turnout gear. These activities, and more, will give visitors a taste of what it means to be in the fire service, and volunteer firefighters will be on hand to discuss the requirements and rewards of joining. All are welcome and encouraged to attend, including families with children. “Joining the volunteer fire service has been the most rewarding experience of my life, and I know I am not alone in saying that,” said FASNY President Ken Pienkowski. “Hundreds of volunteer fire departments

across New York will be participating in RecruitNY, and we invite all New Yorkers to visit with their local firehouses. Visitors may be surprised to find their very own neighbors and friends already serving in the fire department, and just may be inspired to join them in protecting the community.” The volunteer fire service is an integral part of both life and the economy in New York State. In 2016, FASNY released an economic impact report, which quantifies the value of the volunteer fire service and its associated

tax savings throughout the state. The report concluded that the annual cost of a replacement, all-paid fire service would be $3.87 billion. Furthermore, property taxes in New York State would rise by an estimated average of 26.5%. These figures do not factor in the costs of acquiring the necessary facilities and equipment needed to accommodate a paid fire service. The volunteer fire service, and efforts like RecruitNY, make the State not only safer, but also more affordable. Established in 2011,

RecruitNY RecruitNY is a joint undertaking by the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY), the New York State Association of Fire Chiefs (NYSAFC), Association of Fire Districts of New York State, Volunteer Fire Police Association of the State of New York, and County Fire Coordinators Association of the State of New York. On Saturday morning, April 8th, 75 teams of students from 25 Catholic elementary schools across Long Island met at Holy Trinity High School for the Diocesan STEM Fair. The students, who had all qualified by being one of the stand-out exhibits in their school’s science fair, came to have their projects judged by a panel of teachers, Holy Trinity Honors Science students and some guest judges. The student teams competed in two categories, representing grades 5 and 6 and those representing grades 7 and 8. The exhibits were judged by 13 teams of three judges, each with a teacher, student and guest judge. Exhibits were evaluated based on their concept, the use of the scientific method to make their analysis, and the overall impression made by the way the experiments were displayed and explained. While all of the contestants rising to this level brought great work, the judges scored the experiments and awarded prizes to three winners in each age category. Special recognition went to the following: Level I: Grades 5 & 6 • 1st Place: Grace Sicuranza ~ Our Lady of the Hamptons School, Southampton - How do Plants Drink? - This experiment explored whether water temperature affected the rate that plants absorbed water. • 2nd Place: Abigail Mazzella ~ Trinity Regional School, East Northport - How does a Magnetic Field Affect an Electric Motor? – Using an electric motor she created, the student tested the motor’s operation with increasingly more powerful magnets. • 3rd Place: Andrew Amante and Christian

Murphy ~ St. Aidan School, Williston Park - Weight Matters- If the same force is applied to objects of the same size and shape, does their weight determine how far and how fast they will travel? He was a baker chef at Hofstra University and I always cooked with him.” Her culinary journey started when she baked a cake for her school’s guidance office and, “they suggested that I apply for the Barry Tech culinary program. I’m so happy I did,” says Sophia who will be attending Johnson and Wales in the fall. The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964, by executive order of the President, to recognize and honor some of our nation’s most distinguished graduating high school seniors. Check the Calendar So much of life is spent planning, filling in those square boxes on the calendar with appointments and meetings and lunch dates and movie outings. And yet, very little of that time is spent doing things we truly enjoy. Even certain social engagements seem to take on a sense of obligation, of fitting in “fun” simply so that we can check off “reconnecting with old friends” from the neverending to do list. To do, or not to do, that is the question. Sure, there are plenty of things we “have” to do, even if we sometimes lose sight of why. We have been trained, conditioned, to meet the expectations of a society that sees any type of downtime as a bad thing.

If you’re not doing something 24/7, surely you must be shirking some responsibility or another. But what if we simply choose to kick back and relax, to spend our time “doing” nothing – and just leave it at that, no explanation needed. Is that really such a bad thing? When was the last time you slept in, just because? When did you have an entire day with absolutely nothing planned, and no sense of guilt because of it? Leisure does not equal laziness. I recently had lunch with a friend, and this very topic came up, in the context of taking a step back and truly evaluating what it is we want to do – in life as a whole, over the next several

months, weeks, days… even five minutes. How much time is spent planning; yet, of that, very little - if any - is devoted to these questions. We simply forge on, blind to our desires. It’s funny, when you take a moment, the realization kicks in of how few things we do in our daily lives that truly make us happy. Sure, there will always be obligations of one sort or another; but we can frame those with other tasks that are slightly more fulfilling and productive over the long term. The key is figuring out what those are, sooner rather than later. Then you can pencil them in on the calendar.

Willing Hearts, Helpful Hands Parker Jewish Institute for Health Care and Rehabilitation’s Willing Hearts, Helpful Hands Program connects those caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias with free support services. Services include in-home consultations; family consultations; support groups; education and training programs on how to care for someone with Alzheimer’s disease; respite scholarships, access to volunteer companions, and memory cafes. All services are free and available to caregivers of persons with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias living in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Willing Hearts, Helpful Hands served over 650 Long Island families caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias in 2016. The initiative, which is

funded in part by a multiyear grant from the New York State Department of Health, seeks to serve an additional 500 caregivers in the coming year. “Long Island is home to approximately 50,000 people who are afflicted with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias. Over half of these individuals live with a family member or friend who cares for them,” stated Michael N. Rosenblut, President and CEO of Parker Jewish Institute. “The support services provided by Willing Hearts, Helpful Hands are vital to reducing caregiver stress and burnout, and helping caregivers allow their loved ones to live at home for as long as possible,” Rosenblut added. To help ease the stress associated with being a caregiver, Willing Hearts, Helpful Hands provides respite or temporary relief

so caregivers can take a break. The program offers a scholarship that covers in-home care, adult day services or overnight stays in an assisted living facility or nursing home. Caregivers can receive up to 120 hours or a maximum of $1,800 per calendar year. In addition, caregivers also have access to volunteer companions. Trained volunteers are matched with family caregivers and make weekly visits. They provide a friendly visit; they reminisce, sing songs, play cards and games, and go on walks with their senior. “Through the program’s respite scholarship and volunteer companions, caregivers are able to engage in activities they had previously enjoyed, but had to put on hold due to their caregiving responsibilities. The scholarship has also helped decrease the financial

burden placed on families caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias,” stated Lorraine Breuer, Parker’s Senior Vice President of Research and Grants. In addition to these respite services, caregivers can also take advantage of education and training programs offered by Willing Hearts, Helpful Hands, as well as the various support groups held across Long Island. In addition, the program’s memory cafés give caregivers a break from their stressful routines at home by providing a fun, safe environment to socialize in with their loved ones. They are a big hit with caregivers. “We enjoy coming to these cafés. I feel blessed that I have met so many nice people. It has been great for my husband because he loves music and these events help

bring us together. I have made so many nice friends. It’s like family when we all get together for each café,” said Edna Jackson, a caregiver from North Babylon. A magnificent handcrafted Living Legacy Tree now adorns the LICADD Executive Offices in Westbury. The tree was a brainchild of LICADD staff to honor and memorialize those lost and pay tribute to those dedicated to the field of substance abuse and recovery. Championed by LICADD Board Member, Father Philip Eichner of Kellenberg Memorial High School (KMHS), the tree was designed and created by artisan, Frederick H. Weber of Weber Woods with assistance from the KMHS carpentry department. The striking Living Legacy Tree was crafted using over fifteen varieties of wood from the United States, Africa and South America, including Cherry, White Oak, Padouk and Purpleheart. The result is a mosaic-like pattern and evokes the feeling of many coming together as one - those who have lost their battle and those

who continue the work of recovery and support. The visual message is powerful. The Living Legacy Tree will feature the tribute: “In special recognition of those who have been touched by addiction.” Donors’ names or the name of a loved one, friend or relative, will be engraved and placed on the Tree. LICADD is committed to recognizing every contributor of $1,000 or more on the tree. The generosity of donors to the Legacy Tree will go toward funding both Chemical Dependency Interventions for families in the throes of addiction and the Student Assistance Program (SAP) that provides needed prevention education for students in grades K-12. 100% of the proceeds will go directly to LICADD programming to help those challenged with the ravages of addiction and their families. Donors who have made donations of less than $1,000 are invited to consider increasing

their gift to participate in this special program. Over sixty years ago, LICADD founder, R. Brinkley Smithers, surrounded himself with advocates in the medical and spiritual community as well as generous supporters to begin a national movement towards recovery. NHS Inductees This year, Syosset High School’s National Honor Society inducted 315 new members into the Thalian Chapter during two special ceremonies held in the school’s Harvey P. Karp auditorium, which was filled with proud parents, faculty, school officials and scholars. NHS advisers Jessica Rosenberg and Beth Waschitz welcomed the audience as Syosset High School Principal Dr.

Giovanni Durante and NHS President George Chai each gave accounts about the dedication and hard work that goes into becoming a NHS member, as well as all of the wonderful efforts of NHS members over the years to make Syosset High School and the community a better place. Executive Board members lit the ceremonial candles that represent the four key principles of NHS membership: character,

scholarship, leadership and service. Then, one by one, the new inductees’ names were announced and each stepped up to the stage to receive their certificates prior to taking the NHS pledge. Special thanks to the Syosset High School chamber orchestra, led by Stephanie Merten, for providing the processional, interlude and recessional.

Second in Nation Syosset High School’s Virtual Enterprise International team Flip Chip won second place overall in the country in the National Business Plan Competition finals held at the Microsoft Technology Center in New York City earlier this month. Over 570 teams from across the country competed in this year’s NBPC finals. Flip Chip marketed a line of all-natural, environmentally sustainable and tasty potato chips. Since palm oil is not used in the production of its chips, Flip Chip’s product line offers a healthier alternative to the common potato chip and does not aid in deforestation associated with the palm oil industry. In the VEI program, students take on the roles of business professionals and create

a workplace environment in the classroom. After establishing a company and filling various positions, students develop marketing initiatives to promote their business and participate in various competitions involving other VEI teams from schools throughout the country. Flip Chip also won a gold award for its potato farm themed booth in the Best Booth category and a silver award in the Best E-Commerce Website category at the International Trade Show held at Pier 92 in New York City in conjunction with the NBPC and other competitions sponsored by VEI’s Youth Business Summit. Another Syosset High School VEI team, Nice Pops, also received silver awards in the Best Booth and E-Commerce

Website categories at the trade show. Syosset’s VEI team Alternative Reality Entertainment also won honorable mention in the Youth Business Summit’s National Marketing Competition. Max Cohen of AAA Turbo Tech (another Syosset VEI team) also joined students from other VEI programs around the world to win 2nd place in the Global Business Challenge, yet another event held at Pier 92. “It is so rewarding to see the students have so much success after how hard they have worked,” said VEI teacher and Flip Chip adviser Matthew Fiasconaro. “They would practice over school vacations when school was out and on weekends. I’m glad the students get to see that hard work does pay off.”

Parents at Robbins Lane Elementary School in Syosset recently had an opportunity to participate in several free instructional workshops to learn about Google Docs, a web-based application used by students to create, edit and store documents and spreadsheets online. Led by teacher Melanie

Spiegel, technology specialist Colleen Vereline and Principal Thea Pallos, parents learned to create a Google account and document, navigate through the Google menu bar and practice using some of the special features that differentiate Google Docs from other word processing apps.

Happy Earth Day

As part of East Street Elementary School’s first celebration of Earth Day, students participated in a variety of multifaceted activities designed to teach them about the environment and the importance of protecting the planet. Representatives from Volunteers for Wildlife visited the school with three different birds — a screech owl, kestrel falcon

and red-tailed hawk - to speak to students about the natural habitats, hunting behaviors and unique characteristics of local predatory birds. As precursors to the visit, fourth- and fifth-graders on the school’s Green Team created projects inspired by local flora and fauna and participated in an Earth Day essay contest sponsored by the Humane Society of New York and

Nassau County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. As follow-up projects, the Green Team, under the direction of social worker Susan Simon and teachers Mary Shurley and Justina Ketyer, will be planting flowers and vegetables in the school’s “Seeds of Friendship” garden and teaching younger students about gardening and caring for plants.

JUNIOR KNICKS - Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph S. Saladino and Town Councilman Louis B. Imbroto recently joined with some of the young kids who participated in the Town’s “Try Basketball for Free Program,” which was coordinated with the New York Knicks and New York Liberty, through their Junior Knicks and Junior Liberty programs. The event, which took place at the Town of Oyster Bay’s Hicksville Athletic Center, offers an opportunity to learn the game of basketball in a fun and non-competitive environment alongside Knicks and Liberty staff, players, and alumni.
