The event will be held on Friday, April 25th from 7 to 10 p.m. at 230 Elm, with restaurants, bakeries, breweries, and wineries from the East End coming together under one roof to highlight their culinary talents and signature drinks for the community to enjoy.

Musings By: Jamie Lynn Ryan There are moments that stand out in your mind as if they happened yesterday, so crystal clear do they remain years later. Walking around C.W. Post’s campus several weeks ago, I was reminded of the many afternoons spent sitting out on the lawn with my Philosophy class, reading Leaves Of Grass by Walt Whitman. The lush foliage, the warmth of the sun, the cool spring breeze, the words of Long Island’s very own Whitman… those are images that never fade.

There were the countless afternoons spent walking the “Chipmunk Trail,”

through the Arboretum, savoring the peace and tranquility between classes, hoping to spy some sort of wildlife frolicking between the academic buildings – perhaps a black squirrel rooting through someone’s discarded lunch bag, a sight that was spied on numerous occasions. Then there were the many days relaxing in the Honors Lounge, reading, snacking, socializing and, most importantly, forging friendships that are still going strong, ten years later. Oh, and the classes, of course. Can’t forget those.

All kidding aside, there were many classes over the course of my four years at Post

I credit my photography class for introducing me to a whole new outlet for artistic expression, back in the days when digital cameras were still fairly new and handdeveloping our own black and white prints in the darkroom had yet to become obsolete.

Years later, I treasure that portfolio of work.

What better scenery to photograph than the vast expanse of the north shore, what better setting to begin to explore adulthood, and Whitman… and what better place to revisit, all these years later, to see if the memories remain as vibrant today. That they do.

Since its inaugural year in 2011, Taste of Tuckahoe continues to be a popular event with area residents and attendance growing each year. Last year’s celebration drew over 450 people, and this year’s turnout is sure to be even larger with the addition of the VIP

hour, and Chef Christian Mir, proprietor of Stone Creek Inn, an East End favorite for 17 years. Mir honed his culinary skills in restaurants in both France and the U.S., and his restaurant has been hailed as a “culinary tour de force” by Zagat, and a “sit up and take notice experience” by the New York Times.

As in previous years, all proceeds from the Taste of Tuckahoe will benefit the children of Tuckahoe School, and will be used toward enhancing their education.

The Children’s Learning Center has been serving special needs children on Long Island for more than 60 years, with an annual enrollment of 250.

Students with moderate to severe disabilities from the ages 1-21 are served by a devoted faculty consisting of more than 200 educators, clinicians, support staff and administrators.

Each year, approximately 45 preschool students graduate from the center and return to their home districts.

Students receive special education and therapeutic services in a state-of-theart educational setting that includes a smartboard in every classroom, music and art therapy, and numerous exracurriculars including clubs, field trips and special events. Among the activities available to students are Boy and Girl Scouts, chorus, cheerleading, dance team, and a trio of ballet clubs that have performed at

Diane Berger, principal of the Children’s Learning Center at United Cerebral Palsy Association of Nassau County, Inc., (CLC-UCP) was honored by more 350 of Long Island’s most ardent public education supporters recently, as one of 16 honorees to receive the 2014 Nassau BOCES Education Partner Award at the Nassau BOCES Educational Foundation’s annual gala in April. The distinction is bestowed on those individuals or organizations that have made a substantial impact on public education in Nassau County. Berger represented the CLCUCP, which was lauded as one of the most devoted institutions in support of public education on Long Island.

A strategic education partner with school districts since 1967, Nassau BOCES created the awards program to recognize those who share its mission of ensuring a successful, challenging, caring and safe environment that enables students of all ages and abilities to achieve their maximum potential.

These outstanding individuals and organizations have made strides to accomplishing key educational goals embraced by Nassau BOCES, such as ensuring student success.

Giving To Troops In a districtwide effort to show support for the troops, all three of the elementary schools in the Bethpage School District collected items to send overseas.

Students and staff were asked to donate items such as protein bars,

board games, toiletries, iTunes gift cards, linens and letters of thanks, and school supplies for Iraqi and Afghani school children. Hundreds of items were collected and students were given 21st Century Scholars credit to participate in the packing

as part of the “Are You Ready To Pack?” program.

The packing was held at the end of March and run by teachers Maureen Luca, Lorraine Marcis, Christine McGuire and Joanna Sieben.

On April 4th, Holy Trinity High School held their annual Junior Ring Night Ceremony. On this night, four Juniors are awarded scholarships for their senior year by the Office of Institutional Advancement. Members of the Junior class are nominated by the teachers and guidance counselors based on excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership and service.

The four recipients who were awarded scholarships are: • Kristiana McGuffey of Plainview, a gymnast and cheerleader who has been doing volunteer work at Our Lady of Mercy Parish since 5th grade.

One of her major volunteer efforts was as leader on the “Student with a Tender Touch” team which raised money for children to afford surgeries.

Ms. McGuffey does all this and manages to be academically ranked in the top 10% of her class.

At Nassau BOCES Joseph M. Barry Career and Technical Education Center (Barry Tech), the work-based learning program connects students to career related experiences for academic credit.

Opportunities exist for students to apply and reinforce classroom learning through different types of experiential programs.

Barry Tech partners with more than 800 Long Island businesses in a variety of industries, giving students the advantage of careerfield experience. They work under the supervision of

industry specialists who help them develop the skills to compete in the workplace. In addition to providing real-world work experiences, Barry Tech industry partners regularly visit classrooms as mentors to offer their expertise, and invite students to tour their facilities and learn about their businesses.

“Our industry partners are crucial to the success of our students,” says Barry Tech Work Experience Teacher-Coordinator Randi O’Moore, who was recently recognized by the Greater New York Automobile Dealers Association

(GNYADA) as its 2014 Educator of the Year. “They share their experiences in the field, inform our students’ education with their expertise and help them to hone their skills.

They give our students a real-life look at their chosen career fields.”

The work-based learning programs are approved and follow guidelines established by the New York State Education Department and Department of Labor and is supervised by a certified Work Experience TeacherCoordinator.

Advancement Awards ranked #1 in the junior class with a weighted GPA over 100%. Ms. Mazza is a member of the Science

and Math honor societies, Math Fax and Mu Alpha Theta clubs and is part of the school’s Performing Arts program. Over the past two years, she has volunteered with the REACH program at Hofstra

University where she worked one-on-one with an eleven year old autistic girl.

• Katherine Bavaro of Baldwin, who is heavily involved in her parish, St. Christopher’s, and the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America. She maintains a weighted GPA of over 95%, while being involved with the school’s newspaper, Volunteer Club and Students Against Destructive Decisions.

• Kiara Powell of Westbury, who is ranked in the top 5 of her class, while also on the varsity Tennis and Track & Field teams. Ms. Powell also is involved at Holy Trinity as a Shadow Ambassador, School Ambassador and math tutor.

In her community, she is a member of “Jack and Jill of America” through which she visits nursing homes, provides meals for the poor and raises money for breast cancer.

The Adult Career and Continuing Education S e r v i c e s - Vo c a t i o n a l Rehabilitation (ACCESVR) conducted a workshop explaining its vocational rehabilitation and independent living programs as well as how to help eligible individuals with disabilities to obtain employment.

“I am amazed at the turnout Nassau BOCES gets and the details of the event are handled well,” exclaimed Julie Yindra, Director of Services for Students with Disabilities at Hofstra University. She presented a workshop on college planning issues and services for students with disabilities.

Parents learned about services that help students prepare for and obtain a job. One parent stated that when they attend any type of parent support event they feel that they know as much or more than the presenters, but that was not the case with this Expo. It offered a lot of new information.

Parents also commented that the seminar was comprehensive.

There were representatives and speakers not usually at such seminars. Many attendees asked for it to be longer so that they could participate in all workshops.

Plainview-Old Bethpage Board of Education President Ginger Lieberman was honored by more 350 of Long Island’s most ardent public education supporters recently, as one of 16 honorees to receive the 2014 Nassau BOCES Education Partner Award at the Nassau BOCES Educational Foundation’s annual gala earlier this month. The distinction is bestowed on those individuals or organizations that have

made a substantial impact on public education in Nassau County.

A strategic education partner with school districts since 1967, Nassau BOCES created the awards program to recognize those who share its mission of ensuring a successful, challenging, caring and safe environment that enables students of all ages and abilities to achieve their maximum potential. These outstanding individuals and organizations have made strides to

accomplishing key educational goals embraced

by Nassau BOCES, such as ensuring student success.

The Nassau BOCES Educational Foundation is an independent nonprofit organization that raises funds for innovative educational programs that fall outside of the agency’s budget.

“Ginger Lieberman has served Plainview-Old Bethpage with passion, commitment and purpose,” wrote her award nominator.

“There is no aspect of the district that has not been impacted by her care and diligence. She is a passionate advocate for the future of our community and an outstanding leader who truly cares about our children. Our community is a far better place due to the advocacy and unconditional commitment of Ginger Lieberman.”

In Ginger Lieberman’s

30-year tenure in the Plainview-Old Bethpage school district, she has helped the district to make tremendous strides, not only academically, but in social emotional education as well. One need look no further than the Women’s Center, Holocaust Museum and Art Gallery at the high school for evidence of her influence, but there is much more.

Lieberman is a trailblazer in character education, having been a pioneer in bullying prevention. She is the co-creator of the nationally renowned Bully Frog bullying prevention program, featuring the Bully Frog children’s book series, winner of he National Legacy Book Award.

The board president has had a powerful impact on academics in her district as well. She helped to forge a partnership between

Plainview-Old Bethpage Schools, North Shore LIJ and Hofstra University, which gave birth to the district’s Medical Career Academy. The academy engages students in meaningful experiences in all aspects of the health field. Lieberman also spearheaded the transformation of STEM education to STEAM, adding the arts to the popular science technology engineering and math initiative.

Lieberman has served as a positive force for community improvement both in and out of the schools.

While she advocated for the reconfiguration of schools to more appropriately serve the needs of a growing population, she also moved Plainview-Old Bethpage residents into action to clean up a landfill and was instrumental in the

creation of a senior citizens center.
