April’s Charity of the Month is: Operation S.P.L.A.S.H.

Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is a non-profit volunteer ran organization that is committed to improving the quality of life on Long Island Shores. Their mission is to provide a low cost solution to the growing problem of waterfront pollution through public awareness, community action and your participation. S.P.L.A.S.H. stands for Stop Polluting, Littering and Save Harbors.

Products used to wash boat hull sand decks often contain toxic ingredients such as chlorine, phosphates and ammonia.

Degreasers dry the natural oils fish need for their gills to take in oxygen. For boats that are in the water, use cleaning methods that prevent or contain the release of pollutants to surface waters.

Below are a few actions you can take: 1) When possible, remove the boat from the water and perform cleaning where debris can be captured and properly disposed.

2) Use fresh water to clean your boat after every use.

3) Use environmentally friendly cleaning methods and products.

Here are a list of a few alternatives to toxic products: Elbow Grease, Hydogen Peroxide, Baking Soda, Salt, Apple Cider Vinegar, Baby Oil.

They have successfully rescued 2,498,267 pounds of trash from our waters! Also, asside from collecting trash they also have had an amazing impact on the amount of sewage being dumped in our bays. To reduce the flow of trash into our bays, they have collaborated on the funding and installation of more than 4,000 street storm drain inserts in Nassau County.

In honor of Earth Day, an annual event celebrated on April 22nd, which brings awareness about environmental conservation, I chose an eco-friendly non-profit on Long Island that strives to help conserve our island.

Indoor air quality can be a big concern for many families. After all, in a typical six-room home, up to 40 pounds of dust— including dangerous chemicals and other pollutants—is created annually through everyday living. These contaminants are pulled into the HVAC system and recirculated as much as seven times a day. Over time, this leads to built-up contaminants in the ductwork. Since your heating and cooling system is the lungs of your home, you want to keep it clear.

Gazpacho A Healthy Favorite

This gluten-free, dairy-free, nut-free, soy-free and vegan Gazpacho recipe was submitted by Registered Dietician Nutritionist, Lee Cotton, RDN (www. leecottonrdn.com). Lee lives and practices nutritional counseling in Florida, but reads our newspaper online at www.SouthBaysNeighbor.com.

For people with dietary restrictions, eliminating certain foods doesn't have to deprive you of flavor, as this recipe for Gazpacho proves!

What You Will Need 10 ripe tomatoes, chopped 3 English cucumbers, diced 1 large red onion, diced 1 yellow pepper, seeded and chopped 3 red peppers, seeded and chopped 4 tbs red wine vinegar 2 tbs of olive oil 1 clove garlic, minced ½ cup cilantro chopped 2 limes sliced 1 avocado diced

Salt and Pepper to taste Preparation 1.Place tomatoes, onion, bell peppers, Tabasco sauce and garlic in a food processor and process until smooth.

2. Place all of the cucumbers except ½ cup cucumbers into the blender and process until smooth.

3. Add vinegar and oil and quick process until mixed.

4. Place the mixture in a serving bowl, and stir thoroughly.

5. Cover and refrigerate for an hour or until serving time.

6. Remove from refrigerator and uncover.

7. Add salt and pepper to taste.

8. Place gazpacho into serving dishes.

9. Garnish with remaining cucumbers and cilantro and a piece of lime and 1 t. of avocado. Enjoy!

National Geography Bee

Congratulations to Hicksville Middle School’s Eric Zhang, who was named a semifinalist in the 2019 National Geographic GeoBee competition.

He was one of just 100 students to advance to the New York State GeoBee. Eric emerged as the Hicksville Middle School champion in a schoolwide GeoBee held in February.

He and other participating students answered

questions such as: “It takes about 90 days for a drop of water to travel the length of the Mississippi River. The Mississippi River starts in Minnesota and flows 2,340 miles south to its outlet in which state — Louisiana or South Carolina?” (Answer: Louisiana.)

After winning the schoolwide bee, Eric scored in the top 100 on the state qualifying exam, along with semifinalists

from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Department of Defense Dependents Schools and U.S. territories. The New York State finals were held on March 29 and although Eric did not advance to the national competition, finishing in the top 100 shows he really knows his geography!

Great Women In History Women’s historian Antonia Petrash recently visited East Street School in Hicksville to teach students about some of the great accomplishments of famous females in American history in observance of Women’s History Month.

Petrash is an accomplished author of women’s history books, as well as an expert on women’s suffrage. She

conducted an assembly for third, fourth and fifth graders and also stopped by some classrooms. Her vast knowledge of historically important women made for an interesting and innovative presentation.

East Street students learned about Sybil Ludington and her involvement in the American Revolution, as well as Helen Keller’s many accomplishments.

They also enjoyed learning about the WASPs (Women’s Airforce Service Pilots) who tested aircraft and trained other pilots during WWII. March is designated Women’s History Month in Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States to highlight the contributions of women to events in history and contemporary society.

Gian Fanelli has recently opened Jaxson’s Automotive, located in the Walmart Shopping center in Centereach, just east of Leslie’s Pool Supply.

Gian runs Jaxson’s as a general maintenance shop, along with his brother BJ. Gian’s stepfather Mark was who he and BJ got their earlier education in mechanics from, and he was part of the original business plan. Unfortunately, Mark has since been involved in a serious motorcycle accident.

He is okay but is no longer able to work alongside them.

Gian has always stood out

We all know a grand opening is a planned event that is designed to shine a light on yourself, however, in preparation for his grand opening he took things to a higher level. Gian diverted the much needed attention from himself and shifted it to those in need. It was all about Lighthouse Missions, which is an amazing organization that feeds the homeless and less fortunate people living among us.

Since then, Gian has doubled down on his commitment to others by continuing to care for Pastor Jim and the other Lighthouse volunteer’s cars whenever they are in need. He also hosts a continual food, toy and coat drive to help meet the demands of the many who would otherwise go without.

I also learned that around last Christmas, a family was supposed to pick up their car from Jaxson’s but was not able to pay at that moment…

Gian released the car to them at no charge and told them about the great work Lighthouse Missions was doing. He encouraged them to seek some assistance. The family was very grateful and as soon as their rough patch

came to an end they came back and paid their bill. Now we all know a good deed is not done to be boasted about, but sometimes a nice story helps you truly get to know a person!

Gian and BJ both share the desire to dispel the old stereotype of the untrustworthy mechanic or that car repairs always cost a fortune. They do honest work for honest pay.

There isn’t anything fancy over at Jaxson’s, just good mechanics doing good work and building relationships along the way. Pastor Scott Kraniak of Centereach Bible Church met Gian early on as he opened up Jaxson’s.

Pastor Scott, a huge “car

guy” himself, with a love for all things Jeep, has become a regular customer. He and Gian now consider each other friends. The extent of this new friendship was most evident as Pastor Scott recently officiated Gian’s wedding. Gian and his wife Rachel have a beautiful baby girl named Lucy.

The purpose behind these spotlight articles is to learn about the people behind your local businesses (and who doesn’t need to know more about their chosen mechanic?).

After all, this is someone you need to trust not only for a fair price, but for quality work ensuring your safety.

That being said, Jaxson’s is a good choice.

Recognizing Your Life Cycles You may think you know where you will be one year from today. Think again. Wherever you are right now; the people who are around you, the places you frequent, your relationship status, financial status, health status... even the area in which you reside are all outward projections of your inner world and your current stage of development.

In the blink of an eye you could find yourself doing a slow circle turnabout as you wonder, “Whoa!

How did I get here? My world has done a sudden 180.” It’s as if you have taken a quantum leap, but that leap has actually been a long time in the making. It is a result of your personal life cycles.

I know what you are thinking.

“That’s an interesting thought, but a year from now my life will most likely be pretty much the same.” That could be, but let me ask you this... Think about the year you met your spouse, the year you unexpectedly changed career paths or fate might have brought you to a new city (maybe fate brought you to Long Island, NY from someplace else), the

year you found out you were going to be a parent for the first time. I could list a hundred more examples. Who knew as the clock struck 12 midnight on New Year’s Day of that year, that those life changing events would be coming your way.

Life holds so many mysteries for us to unfold; sometimes pleasant and sometimes not so pleasant. What I have come to know is that no matter what you are going through, there are always goodies waiting around a new corner. I can honestly say, I have never gone through a personal trial without something magical coming out of it; a special person, a new opportunity, an important revelation. I have also come to know that life looks most messy before things fall into place. At that point, all you can say is, “Wow!,” and “Thank you.”

We go through cycles of rest, growth and then reaping rewards.

We know we are in a cycle of rest when life seems status quo, the needle doesn’t move very much and we are just going about our business with no significant

ripples. Life seems fairly effortless and predictable in this cycle. It may even seem a bit boring at times, and you long for a little spice.

We know we are in a growth cycle when hard times come, life feels chaotic and overwhelming, we “just can’t seem to catch a break,” and we experience heavy and painful emotions. It is in our growth cycles where we do the most significant work and our soul achieves further expansion.

This expansion prepares us for our next reward cycle. When we pass the tests we are given during our growth cycles, we will then (often, when we least expect it) come into a new reward cycle.

A reward cycle is recognizable to us because this is when we experience the goodies of life.

Someone special comes into our path, doors seem to open up, a dream comes true, and life starts to feel great again.

Suddenly, perspective is achieved. Any discomfort seems worth it, because it delivered us to a place of being able to receive the gift(s) we are now being given.

Students colored and decorated bookmarks that will be displayed and distributed to children at local libraries including the Bethpage Public Library.

The Bethpage Union Free School District’s John F. Kennedy Middle School student council recently donated a check for $1,170.35 to Autism Speaks, thanks to a successful “Penny Wars” fundraiser.

During the school’s annual Spirit Week, held throughout the second week of February, lunch periods competed against each other in a “Penny Wars” competition. It was decided

by the student council that the money raised was to be donated to Autism Speaks prior to World Autism Awareness Day on April 2.

The advocacy organization Autism Speaks sponsors autism research and conducts awareness as well as outreach activities aimed at families, governments and the public.

Students in the seventhperiod lunch group raised the greatest amount of funds,

and were rewarded with a pancake breakfast hosted by staff members on March 15. Student council advisers Julianna LaLuna and Melissa Mackenzie were extremely proud and thankful to all who got involved and generously participated.

“The competition was a perfect way to bring out the best of our students and help raise awareness and funds for Autism Speaks,” said Ms. Mackenzie.

Bye Bye Birdie The Bethpage High School Masquers’ Guild produced three captivating performances of “Bye, Bye Birdie” at the Bethpage Center for Performing Arts from March 28-30.

F a m i l i e s , administration, staff and community members enjoyed each of the three performances directed and choreographed by Ilana Strongin, produced

by Michelle Marino and under the vocal direction of Jessica Sinisi. The play

marked the final district musical for many of the seniors in the cast and crew.

The show is inspired by the popularity of singer Elvis Presley and his draft notice into the U.S. Army in 1957. The musical features rock-and-roll idol Conrad Birdie, played by Joseph Colavolpe, being drafted into the Army and his agent Albert Peterson, portrayed by William Katartzis, creating a farewell performance on

the Ed Sullivan Show.

The farewell performance is hoped to also save Almaelou Records from going under.

“We would like to thank the cast and crews for all of their hard work to make ‘Bye, Bye Birdie’ a success,” said Ms. Strongin. “We could not have done this performance without the help and support of our custodial, administrative and building staff.”
