Town, Fire And Water Officials Denounce State Housing Plan That Threatens Long Island

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino joined with his partners in Nassau County government, Supervisor Jen DeSena of North Hempstead and Supervisor Don Clavin of Hempstead, as well as Oyster Bay Town Clerk Rich LaMarca and Receiver of Taxes Jeff Pravato, to demand that State lawmakers eliminate the State Housing Plan to flood suburbs and singlefamily home neighbors with thousands of new apartments. This latest proposal by Governor Hochul – seemingly a repeat of last year’s plan to turn suburban neighborhoods into overcrowded urban centers – would result in high density housing flooding every community, as well as spot zoning in which large scale apartment buildings could pop up next to single-family homes.

“We must save our

suburbs from this illconceived plan as it would overcrowd classrooms, greatly increase traffic and cars parked on our streets, strain emergency services and threaten the environment. We join together to protect our most precious resource –our water supply, which is under attack by this latest plan of overdevelopment,” said Supervisor Saladino. “When it comes to the environment, the largest plume in any sole-source aquifer in the United States sits under our land in the Town of Oyster Bay. Over a billion dollars are already needed to clean up the plume, and even more is needed for our water districts to keep ensuring that our drinking water is safe at the tap. Over a billion dollars are also needed to upgrade our sewage and septic systems which are already near capacity, with

many seeping into the ground. Our only landfill in Brookhaven is on the verge of permanent closure, and a garbage crisis looms for the current population as waste will need to be trucked off Long Island and no solution exists. For

these reasons and a host of others, we demand that State lawmakers eliminate the Governor’s Housing Mandate.”

The three Town Supervisors joined local district officials to voice their concerns of how the

Legislator Arnold W. Drucker, New York Blood Center Host Community Blood Drive at Plainview-Old Bethpage Library

Nassau County Legislator Arnold W. Drucker (D – Plainview) invites residents to donate blood at the Plainview-Old Bethpage Library, 999 Old Country Road, Plainview, N.Y. 11803 from 12:30 – 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 15. Each donor will receive a voucher for two free New York Mets tickets as a thank-you for rolling up their sleeves and helping to save lives.

“Blood donors are among our society’s unsung everyday heroes, and they are instrumental in ensuring that anybody who faces a medical emergency can

receive the care that they need to survive and thrive,” Legislator Drucker said. “Whether you are a routine donor, one who hasn’t given in a while or even a firsttime donor, we welcome you to join us at the Plainview-Old Bethpage Library on April 15 to roll up your sleeves and give the gift of life to your community!”

Eligible donors must have an ID with a signature or a photo, weigh at least 110 pounds, have had no tattoos in the last 12 months and be ages 16-75 years of age (16-year-old donors must have parental

consent. Donors over age 76 must bring a doctor’s note.) O-negative and B-negative donors are especially needed in addition to all other blood types.

Visit https://donate. nybc.org/donor/ schedules/drive_ schedule/295638 to schedule a time to donate or call 1-800-933-BLOOD (25663). Appointments are preferred but not required; walk-ins will be taken as capacity permits. For more information, contact Legislator Drucker’s office at 516571-6216 or adrucker@ nassaucountyny.gov

Governor’s urbanization plan would negatively impact the environment, traffic, parking, emergency services, police protection, local utilities and schools. They also asked the public to join them in contacting state officials to demand

that this proposal not move forward.

To help have their voices heard against this proposal, residents can visit www. oysterbaytown.com/sos and sign the petition telling state representatives their opposition to the plan.

Laura Maier invite residents to participate in an Oyster Bay Harbor Cleanup and Marine Education Expo, scheduled for Saturday, April 15th (rain date April 16th) at Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park in Oyster Bay. Co-sponsored by the Friends of the Bay, the day offers volunteers – individuals, families, companies and organizations – an opportunity to give back to the environment by removing litter from the shoreline and below. The Marine Education Expo features environmentalists and marine educators offering information on local wildlife, including encounters with some animal ambassadors, interesting ecosystem restoration projects, solutions to help tackle marine pollution, a marine vessel restoration project and boat yard tour, and family fun activities. $20,000 grant applications will be available to homeowners and small businesses looking to upgrade their septic system to new clean water systems.

“This is a great opportunity to roll up your sleeves, giveback to Mother Earth, and have fun while learning more about our local marine life and environment,” said Supervisor Saladino. “ This year’s cleanup also features an underwater dive to the harbor’s bottom! A group

of local divers will enhance our debris collection efforts by removing trash that has already traveled into the water.”

Volunteers are invited to participate in the cleanup, which will run from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The central meeting place will be Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park launching ramps and waterfront gazebo off of Larrabee Avenue in Oyster Bay. Additional locations for the clean-up include Stehli Beach in Bayville and Centre Island Beach in Bayville. Certificates are available upon request for students seeking to fulfill volunteer requirements. Typically, in year’s past, harbor and beach clean-up events have resulted in 40,000lbs of debris being collected by volunteers and town workers.

Councilwoman Maier stated, “From wildlife encounters to boat restoration and fun activities, this Harbor Cleanup and Marine Education Expo offers a great and free day out for the family. I hope to see you at the Oyster Bay Harbor Cleanup & Marine Education Expo on April 15th.”

Individuals and groups who are interested in registering for this environmental cleanup should visit www.oysterbaytown. com/volunteerform or call the Department of Environmental Resources at (516) 677-5943.

The Value Of Repeat Customers

Small business owners no doubt recognize the value of repeat customers, but few may recognize just how valuable such customers can be to their bottom lines. A study from researchers at Harvard Business School found that a customer’s eighth purchase was an

average of 80 percent higher than his or her first purchase. In addition, a survey from the strategic planning, marketing and sales consultants Altfeld, Inc. found that the probability of selling to an existing customer is between 60 and 70 percent, while that probability shrinks to as

low as 5 percent for new customers. Customer retention strategies like offering superior customer service and seeking input from customers can help small businesses generate more repeat customers, which can greatly improve their chances for long-term success.

The Charity of the Month for April is Rebuilding Together Long Island

www.rebuildingtogether.org

Saladino Announces Paid Internship Opportunities For College Students

Rebuilding Together

Long Island (RTLI) is a nonprofit organization, headquartered in Farmingdale, serving Nassau County and most of Su olk County. As an a liate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together, their mission is repairing homes, revitalizing communities and rebuilding lives.

To accomplish their vision of safe and healthy homes for everyone, they provide free essential home safety repairs and modifications for economicallydisadvantaged homeowners, whether they are older adults, veterans, families or persons with a disability or limited mobility.

Although RTLI’s teams work year round, April is a particularly important month because it is National Rebuilding Month. “Too many Americans su er from the health and economic consequences of living in substandard housing and under served communities,” said Caroline Blakely, President & CEO of Rebuilding Together. “National Rebuilding Month serves as an annual month-long call to service to encourage people to support their neighbors, strengthen their community and ensure everyone is living in safe and healthy homes.”

RTLI together with its 120 sister a liates will all look to surpass last year’s accomplishment of working with over 13,000 volunteers to repair close to 800 homes and over 150 community centers nationwide. As you drive around Long Island, watch for RTLI’s lawn signs. If you see one, you will know their volunteers are hard at work helping someone who needs a helping hand.

Once accepted into the program, each home receives a safety check of every room. Each home has its own challenges. RTLI also listens to the homeowner to determine their priorities. Hazards and unsafe conditions are noted and given to the volunteer crews so they can prepare a materials list and then

get to work. Minor plumbing and electrical repairs may be made, but they may also do weatherization, flooring (if the current floor is a hazard), sheet rock repair and a myriad of other repairs. If someone has limited mobility, a wheelchair ramp may be constructed, grab bars and railings installed, doorways widened where possible to accommodate a wheelchair. Conversions of bathtubs to walk-in showers can also be done and under certain circumstances, a stair glide may be installed. While RTLI cannot always take care of every issue in the home, they will tell you that every home they work on is left safer than is was and the lives of its residents are improved when the project is complete! So how can you help?

•If you know someone who may benefit from their services, have them call the RTLI o ce at 631.777.7894, Monday – Friday, to see if they qualify for the free program.

•Join the RTLI team! Volunteers can sign up at rebuildingtogetherli.org/ volunteer-today. Currently they are looking for individuals who are fluent in Spanish and for an o ce person, particularly if they are familiar with Salesforce. Additionally, if you are handy with tools, the Nassau and Su olk crew teams are always looking for more help.

•Donate at rebuildingtogetherli. org. RTLI relies on the donations of our neighbors, some grants and corporate sponsorships, as they do not receive any government funding.

•RTLI encourages local business to get involved and sponsor a project. The organization can find the right project for your business to sponsor and you can then promote your generosity on social media to show your commitment to improving the health and safety of someone in need locally.

When we work together, we can bring about transformational change quickly in our communities. Stay tuned for next week’s article to learn more.

If your non-profit would like to be featured in this column, please email noellelambert@longislandmediagroup.com for consideration.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced the return of internship opportunities for college students who are looking to gain meaningful work experience through an internship program being offered by the Town for the 2023 summer season.

“Internship give students an advantage over other job seekers when it comes to work readiness, and I am proud that the Town will once again provide that opportunity for our residents,” Supervisor Saladino said. “This internship program provides an invaluable opportunity for students

to receive mentorship and supervision from experienced government professionals.”

This federally-funded program compensates students at a rate of $18 an hour for work completed within various Town departments. Students will work 19.5 hours per week. The program will operate June 1st through August 9th. Funds have been granted to the Town by the Oyster Bay-North HempsteadGlen Cove Workforce Development Board. This internship program offers college students the ability to gain worksite specific knowledge, learn departmental procedures, assist with

Neighbor

general office duties and reports, develop an understanding of worksite specific projects and apply the knowledge gained to benefit the Town of Oyster Bay.

College students interested in internship opportunities must apply by April 17th. Applicants must submit a resume with their application, available at oysterbaytown.com/ internship. Completed applications and resumes should be submitted to personnel@oysterbayny.gov. For more information, please call (516) 797-4583 or email personnel@oysterbay-ny. gov.

A Look Into The Work Of Local Wantagh Artist, Francis Bonnet

Francis Bonnet is a local artist and a graduate from the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), where he earned a degree in Illustration. From a young age, Francis was always drawn to the world of cartoons. Growing up, he recalls a used bookstore around the corner from him, which he visited regularly to buy Peanuts, Garfield and Calvin and Hobbes books with the money he earned from his allowance.

These were some of his favorite comic strips and it was in those moments in which he knew that this was something he wanted to do. He soon began making his very own comics in grade school, which served as a foundation that helped him learn and improve upon since then. During his time at FIT, he developed his skills further in graphic design and painting, which helped his career tremendously.

In 2003, Francis first published

a comic called Crunchy, which ran both online and in print for two years. Afterwards, he began focusing his efforts on Suburban Fairy Tales. This comic series follows fairy tale characters in a modern, suburban Long Island setting. The series has evolved over the years and has since narrowed down its characters to primarily focus on The Three Little Pigs. Today, eight Suburban Fairy Tales books have been published and are available for purchase on Amazon.

The newest book, All’s Fair In Love and Wolves, was published this past September and it introduces a new character, Wolfette, who will become the love interest of one of The Three Little Pigs. The series has also been featured on GoComics, Kidjutsu, Raytoons Cartoon Avenue, Global Comix, Webtoon, and The Funnies.

Francis Bonnet also freelances for a variety of other comic series. He began working for Archie Comics Publications in

February 2015 and provides stories and cover ideas for various Archie Digests. Francis has also contributed to other comic strips such as Rhymes with Orange by Hilary Price and Frank and Ernest by Bob Thaves.

For up-to-date content on Suburban Fairy Tales, visit www.suburbanfairytales.com or follow along on Instagram @suburbanfairytales. To contact Francis directly, email francisbonnet@yahoo.com.
