Adventure is Near Now entering its 48th Season, the Long Island Game Farm - Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo will officially open on Thursday, April 13th.

During the opening weeks, guests will have the opportunity to learn about the forthcoming baby animals, including chicks, ducklings and kid goats, and will be able to pet and hand feed the animals once

they are born.

Though some of the park’s Summer animals (giraffe, camels and lemurs) are still vacationing in Florida until May, the Spring season is always an especially fun and relaxing time for guests to visit, with cooler weather, smaller crowds and lower prices. In celebration of the season opening, the park is offering a reduced

Spring admission price of $14.95+ per child (age 3 to 12), senior (age 62+) or military personnel; and $16.95+ per adult (age 13 to 61). As always, discount coupons will be available online and through the company’s Facebook page.

Springtime Sniffles Less than one week into the new season, and I came down with a cold. Not just any cold, mind you – the epitome of chest colds, complete with congestion, sinus pressure and one of those irritating, incessant sort of tickles in the back of the throat that seem to kick into high gear right around bedtime. All winter, and not a sniffle.

That, I believe, is what they call irony.

So, too, is the fact that those who have been looking forward to spring with such anticipation are already bemoaning the pouring rain we’ve been experiencing over the last week or so. April showers

bring May flowers, do they not? At least that’s how the old saying goes. Of course, some flowers have already blossomed thanks to the unseasonably warm temperatures scattered throughout March and, as such, have gone back to hibernating for the duration.

More irony, indeed.

No worries, there are certainly plenty of flowers to be had over the next several months, along with green grass and flourishing trees and… pollen and sap and weeds and mold spores… There’s nothing like the great outdoors.

Just be sure to stock up on tissues and allergy pills before you venture out.

And maybe an umbrella,

for good measure.

Spring is a perfect representation of life as a whole. It’s filled with much anticipation of better days, often precluded by clouds and unseasonable changes in temperature, or moods, if you will. And still, there are those who would just as soon skip right over it into summer, assuming that sunshine and surf and sand equal happiness; when really, the unknown is never guaranteed to be better than the present.

And that, dear readers, is the essence of it all.

Appreciate today and all the sniffles and sunbursts it may bring; stop and pick a flower, splash in a puddle, enjoy the moment. It’s the only one you’ve got.

In its inaugural year in Syosset, the VEI program has experienced tremendous success, with all four teams (Flip Chip, Alternative Reality Entertainment, Nice Pops and AAA Turbo Tech) receiving accolades. Flip Chip and ARE were two of only 10 teams chosen to participate in the Long Island Regional

Competition held earlier this month at American Portfolios Financial in Holbrook.

VEI students take on the roles of business professionals and create a workplace environment in the classroom. They brainstorm ideas for a product, service or marketable concept, then establish their company by submitting resumes and cover letters to hopefully land an interview for various positions, including the CEO. Flip Chip markets a line of allnatural, environmentally sustainable and tasty potato chips.

According to Flip Chip VEI teacher Matthew Fiasconaro, the team has been reviewing video from the previous competition and making adjustments to their presentation.

They also invited Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tom Rogers and Deputy Superintendent Adele Bovard to sit in on their presentation and provide feedback. Fiasconaro said the intent was for the students to rehearse their presentation in front of district administrators to match the intensity the students expect to face during the national competition.

“The Flip Chip team is really excited with all the attention that they have been receiving lately,” said Fiasconaro.

“Yet they remain focused and driven on the task at hand, which is to win the National Business Plan Competition.”

DUNE DAY - Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently joined with Town Officials, Islanders’ legend Bobby Nystrom and caring Volunteers at the 2017 Dune Stabilization Project at TOBAY Beach. Since 1989, the Dune Stabilization Project has been an initiative to help protect TOBAY Beach. This recent event included many caring volunteers working side by side for a great cause. Planting dune grass goes a long way in stabilizing the construction of dunes as it enhances and protects the beach’s environment.

Harvesting Learning In observance of New York Agricultural Literacy Week, held March 20th24th, second-graders at Parkway and Meadowbrook elementary schools in the East Meadow School District received a visit from Laurie Murdoch, a volunteer with Cornell Cooperative Extension, for a lesson on agriculture.

Murdoch read “The Grapes Grow Sweet” by Lynne Tuft, a story about a young boy named Julian who is old enough to take part in the grape harvest on his family’s farm. The story provides a glimpse of what it’s like to grow up in a vineyard and explains the process of growing grapes.

Following, students

asked questions about harvesting grapes, working in a vineyard and how they can grow fruits and vegetables in their own backyards. In addition, Cornell Cooperative Extension donated a copy of the book to each school’s library for student use.

Inspired by the NCAA tournament, a spirit of competition was in the air in the East Meadow School District when W.T. Clarke Middle School students competed in the school’s March Madness basketball tournament on March

24th.

Thirty-two teams consisting of sixththrough eighth-grade students gathered in the gymnasium to participate in three-on-three tournament-style games, eliminating each other

until one team earned the title of March Madness Champions.

The tournament gave students the chance to hone their basketball skills while demonstrating teamwork, collaboration and sportsmanship.

ACCESS Workshop Members of the community joined East Meadow School District staff and administrators at the Leon J. Campo Salisbury Center on March 21st for the final ACCESS workshop held this year. Project ACCESS (A Community Committed to Educating Students for Success) is a subcommittee of the district’s PTA Curriculum Council that sponsors educational workshops for parents throughout the school year. The most recent workshop, titled “Never Alone,” examined

the effects of addiction and the treatment and self-help programs available within the community.

Sponsored by the East Meadow PTA Council in conjunction with the East Meadow Kiwanis, attendees experienced an evening of knowledge, empowerment and hope as guest speakers from Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous shared their testimonies about addiction and how it affected their relationships and lives. Members of Al-Anon and Nar-Anon spoke about coping

with a friend’s or family member’s addiction. In addition, a representative from the YES Community Counseling Center provided a wealth of information about programs to prevent and treat addiction.

The audience was enlightened by these personal stories and appreciative of the amount of support the East Meadow community provides to help individuals and families in the fight against addiction.

TOWN CITATION PRESENTED - Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph S. Saladino recently presented a Town Citation to Elizar Alden Aspiras of Boy Scout Troop 205 (St. Edward the Confessor Church) in Syosset, who recently achieved the coveted rank of Eagle Scout. A special ceremony was held to honor Elizar’s accomplishments and his many years of hard work to achieve the designation of Eagle Scout.

DISTINGUISHED ARTISTS - Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph S. Saladino recently attended the Town’s 2017 Distinguished Artists Concert, at the Hicksville Public Library. The group “Breakdown” is Long Island’s premiere Tom Petty Tribute band. The audience appreciated the outstanding music that these five Long Island musicians collaborated, known as the ultimate Tom Petty experience.

Second-graders at Parkway Elementary School in the East Meadow School District learned about the importance of being active and maintaining a healthy lifestyle when PlayFit Education founder Dr. Curt Hinson - aka “Dr. Recess” - led an interactive assembly at the school on March 23rd.

According to its website, PlayFit Education specializes in fitness,

health, physical education and playground programs that focus on play, fitness and social-emotional health. The company’s Dr. Recess Assembly and Playground Games Program was created to serve elementary schools throughout the nation.

Dr. Hinson educated the young students about new and exciting ways to learn, grow and develop healthy lifestyles through play.

This play includes grade

level-appropriate games that enhance students’ social-emotional, critical thinking and motor skills.

Following the indoor assembly, the students met Dr. Hinson outside during their recess time to participate in the activities he had taught them. Using dodge balls, hula hoops and cones, they engaged in games such as “Keep Away” and “One Bounce” with their classmates.

C u l m i n a t i n g Meadowbrook Elementary School’s two-week Pick a Reading Partner program, local officials and community leaders joined East Meadow School District professionals on March 24th to read to kindergarten through fifth-grade classes.

Following the school’s PARP theme of “Step Right Up, Read a Book,” student

representatives from each class posed with the guest readers for a picture alongside giant circus curtains and decorative props such as balloons, popcorn and top hats before escorting them to their classroom.

Among those who read grade level-appropriate books to the students were Hempstead Town Clerk Nasrin Ahmad,

Assemblyman Tom McKevitt, Nassau County Legislator Norma Gonzalves, PTA Council President Donna LaScala, district administrators and other influential community members.

After the guests had finished reading, the students asked them about their professional careers and how reading has helped them to succeed.

Five Tips On Moving (NAPSI)—According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 12 percent of Americans move to new homes every year. The next time you’re among them, you may be able to save time, trouble and money when you choose a professional mover—you won’t have to worry about renting equipment, paying hidden costs, handling heavy or bulky items and being responsible if something goes wrong.

Here are five hints to help.

1. Be wary of any “guaranteed” estimates offered over the phone or online. Make sure you show the mover everything that needs to be moved, and get at least three estimates to compare. Avoid any that are too high or too low.

2. Check the company’s ratings with the Better Business Bureau and other consumer websites, and ask family and friends for referrals.

Make sure all agreements are in writing, and get a copy of everything
