The Time of the Season struggles, it is how we choose to deal with, and hopefully, to overcome these issues that is the most important.

Redirecting our focus constantly, from wallowing in the negativity of why did this happen? to being proactive in setting a plan for what would I like to happen? going forward.

No use dwelling on the past; we need to be present in order to look to the future with anything resembling a clear perspective.

They say hindsight is 20/20; but is it truly? I would argue that, even upon reflecting on past events, I do not have an unequivocal assessment of how things might have turned out differently; or even, if they should have. No, I am a firm believer that all things happen for a reason, even if that reason is not immediately - or ever - apparent. Some things are simply not meant to be

understood beyond a shadow of a doubt. Life is nothing if not filled with unexpected twists and turns, and a touch of the unknown.

I recently came across a quote which said, in part, that it is not truly the unknown which we fear; but rather, what we think we know of the unknown. What an interesting concept, this notion that most of our apprehensions are selfmade and, if we would only take care to take a step back and let things play out a bit, perhaps we would be pleasantly surprised as to the outcome.

Spring is traditionally seen as a time of growth and progress, naturally and otherwise. The seeds must be planted and cultivated, in hopes of a fruitful season.

Whether things blossom as we wish, well, that remains to be seen. As with most things, only time will tell.

Friends of Karen

Friends of Karen is a nonprofit organization that supports critically-ill children and their families.

This year, they are celebrating their 40th anniversary; four decades of bringing help, hope and support to over 15,000 children and their families in the tri-state area. I had the pleasure of meeting with some of their staff members to grasp a better understanding of all they have done and all they continue to do for those in need.

In 1978, Friends of Karen began with one family, one child, Karen MacInnes; and one inspired woman, Sheila Petersen, who wanted to sustain her close friends through the devastating illness of their daughter. Today, Friends of Karen serves hundreds of families by providing emotional, financial and advocacy support to children with life-threatening illnesses, and to their families in order to help keep them stable, functioning and able to cope, at no cost.

To apply for help, a parent or guardian of the ill child must call the organization and speak to a member of their Family Support Team. It is apparent to me that Friends of Karen wants whomever is going through a tough and unimaginable critical illness to know that they are not alone and that help is available for them.

Friends of Karen often hosts or participates in many events within their community. On Saturday, May 5th and Sunday, May 6th, they are hosting a team in the Long Island Marathon at

Eisenhower Park in East Meadow.

Saturday will be a 5K and Sunday will be a 10K. They are looking for people to join their Friends of Karen team and to cross the finish line knowing they’re making a difference in the lives of many. If you are interested in participating in either or both of these races with colleagues, as a family or individually, you can sign up today! Additionally, if you are interested in volunteering your time preparing for the event - handing out t-shirts, making sure every participant has what he or she needs, etc.; or at the event - taking photos for promotional purposes, you can do so. Are you someone who prefers to donate? If yes, you can do so by donating a gift card today. And just like that, spring has arrived, with its bursts of warm sunshine coaxing the flower blossoms from beneath the winter-hardened soil. The Easter Bunny has already come and gone, and plans are well underway for summer vacations and the tantalizing temptation of beach season.

Seems we were only just beginning to put together our Christmas shopping lists not so long ago, doesn’t it?

It’s funny, how this concept of time seems to work its way into nearly every conversation in one respect or another the lack of it, its tendency to pass by too quickly… seldom have I heard the argument that there is simply too much time to know what to do with.

Moving Forward Strategy and Tactics As a professor of management in a large business school, I have taught hundreds of students the principles of strategy and tactics.

As a start, with a bewildering array of freshman faces, the climate soon changed with nods of satisfaction. Further, when I then explained how most of these principles could be easily converted to enrich their daily lives, that rang a bell to all of them.

What gave me the biggest satisfaction was that the majority of students who took this course found great success in applying these principles to their own situations.

Options for Community Living, Inc. has been awarded two contracts under the New York State Supportive Housing Program (NYSSHP) through the NYS Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance. These NYSSHP awards – together totaling $230,640 – will enable Options to assist vulnerable Long Island families and single adults residing in the agency’s supportive housing programs.

“The NYSSHP awards provide much needed financial support for Options’ case managers who work directly with residents in our housing programs, which continue to grow,” stated Yolanda Robano-Gross, executive director, Options for Community Living.

“Supportive housing allows people to live with dignity in the community.

It is the most humane and cost-effective solution to ending homelessness and creating stability for vulnerable people on Long Island.”

Options’ residents pay an affordable rent and case managers make regular home visits to monitor health and safety and teach skills, such as cooking, budgeting and much more so that the residents can live independently. More than 600 Long Islanders reside in Options’ over 150 supportive housing sites in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.

Housing Grants Awarded

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino announces the launch of Car Show Long Island, a new premiere experience, kicking off on Saturday, April 28th from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at TOBAY Beach with its 2018 Spring Dust Off. Hundreds of automobiles, trucks, military vehicles, and emergency service vehicles will be on display for spectators to enjoy. A live concert performed by That 70s Band will take place during the day, followed by a trophy presentation.

Supervisor Saladino stated, “Whether you’re a proud classic car owner or you want to see the best cars in the region, the Car Show Long Island is sure to please! A classic event in the making, this premiere Car Show will be the first of many presented by the Town of Oyster Bay.” This family-fun event is a perfect way to spend the day, all with the beautiful

backdrop of Tobay Beach.

Spectators can check out cool cars and enjoy a live concert performed by “That 70’s Band” – New York’s 70’s Disco, Dance and Funk group. Enthusiasts and spectators can also grab a bite to eat at the bayside restaurant Mango Bay Latin Kitchen & Cantina or grab something to eat-onthe-go from one of the food tents.

Trophies will be awarded to the best-of-the-best, and children will have a say when deeming which rides are their favorites in the Kids’ Choice Award.

The Batmobile and several other Hollywood vehicles -designed by the famous George Barris - created for major motion pictures and television will be on display thanks to the Autoseum Automotive Teaching Museum of Garden City.

Car Show Long Island

Syosset High School senior Wanlin Li continues to represent Syosset well. Wanlin was recently praised by the College Board for her superior score on last May’s AP Computer Science A Exam.

She not only received a top score of 5 but also was one of only 112 students in the world to earn every point possible, receiving the maximum score on every portion of the exam.

More than 60,519 students around the world took the AP Computer Science A Exam last year.

to be proud of, once again Wanlin will represent the United States at the European Girl’s Mathematical Olympiad this April in Italy. Last year, she also represented the U.S. on a fourmember European Girl’s Mathematical Olympiad team in Switzerland.

Along with taking top honors last year, Wanlin and her three teammates were each awarded a gold medal for their individual performances on this challenging mathematics exam.

As a sophomore Wanlin

tied for the fourth-highest score in the country, qualifying her for the United States of America Junior Mathematical Olympiad exam. She was one of just 50 students nationwide invited to the Mathematical Olympiad Summer Program. She is also a past runner-up at the New York State Mathematics League competition.

Along with computer programming, Wanlin said she enjoys the thinking required in math and the ability to solve different problems.

Co-Ed Badminton, CoEd Volleyball and CoEd Basketball will all be taking place at the Town of Oyster Bay Hicksville Athletic beginning the second week in April.

“These fun and recreational programs are open to residents age 18 and older,” Councilman Imbroto said. “They are a great way to kick-start a healthy and active spring.

These programs not only offer residents health benefits, but also provide a social opportunity for making new friends.”

The Co-Ed Volleyball program starts on Monday, April 9th and will be held on Mondays from 9:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., Wednesdays from 9:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 8:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.

A Competitive Volleyball Hour is available to registered Spring 2018 players on Mondays from 10:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.

Savor these beautiful (and edible) flowers C Cooking with edible flowers is a trend that has endured for centuries. According to Fleurs Gourmandes, the first recorded history of edible flowers occurred in 140 BC. Use of calendula in salads dates back to the ancient Greeks and Romans.

Victorian-era candied flowers and flowerencrusted sweets took edible flowers to new heights. Today, nothing may make a meal seem more gourmet than the inclusion of flower petals in the recipe.

Of course, before delving into the expanded world of cooking using edible blooms, some notes of caution should first be mentioned. Avoid flowers that may have been sprayed with fungicides, herbicides or insecticides. To verify safety, only use edible flowers grown specifically for this purpose, not flowers picked from

roadsides or from landscapes. Secondly, remember that not all flowers are edible.

Some can be poisonous or cause severe gastrointestinal upset when consumed.

That means all flowers should be carefully researched prior to experimenting with them in the kitchen.

To begin growing — and eating — edible flowers, refer to this list of varieties deemed safe and be careful to double-check against allergies and any interactions with medications prior to use.

Allium: These are blossoms from the allium family, which include garlic, chives and leeks. These flowers can be used to add flavor to foods.

Marigolds are just one of the many flowers that can be consumed.

Uncooked, calendula can have spicy notes that add variety to salads and garnishes.

eenagers are busier than ever before. But even the busiest teens need places to unwind and relax with friends. Many parents aspire to create that type of environment in their homes but don’t know where to begin.

Parents who want to keep teens nearby can create hangout spaces at home that make it easy for teens to feel comfortable with their friends. These “teen caves” can be private but permit supervision when necessary. With a few modifications, it’s possible to transform a room in a home into a teen-friendly hangout space.

Data from the National Center for Education Statistics notes that parental involvement correlates to higher grade point averages. Research from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says certain parenting styles, including those that set rules and monitor teens in supportive ways, develop kids who are more likely to wear seat belts while driving, while such support also lowers crash risk. Involved parents also may reduce the chances of teen drug use and promiscuous behavior.

Personal touches turn a house into a home. Hanging pictures, whether they’re personal photographs or artwork, can really change the character of a room.

Unfortunately, some people may not know the proper ways to display pictures on a wall. Design maven Martha Stewart advises that the first step is to gather all of the pictures that are in consideration for hanging. This will enable a person to see what is available and edit their selection based on the space available, theme or color scheme. Having the artwork there enables a person to move it around like a puzzle until the placement feels just right.

Next, plan on hanging artwork at 57 inches on center, according to the renovation experts at Apartment Therapy. “On center” means the middle of the photograph or painting will always be at 57,” as this measurement represents the average human eye height. This height is regularly used as a standard in many galleries and museums.

When the goal is to hang multiple pictures, treat the entire grouping as

a single unit. This means creating the layout and finding the center of the middle piece of the grouping.

To make picture grouping easier, use paper templates with arrows to indicate whether the artwork will be hung horizontally or vertically. These templates can then be easily taped to the wall and rearranged until the grouping is ideal.

There are no hard and fast rules concerning frames, meaning they do not all have to match. But placing framed artwork side by side can give a person a feel for whether the images and the frames work together in the space.

Some people like to use frames of similar colors and sizes. Others want the eclectic mix-and-match appeal. It’s ultimately up to the homeowner.

Measuring is key to hanging a picture correctly on the wall. Take into consideration the type of attachment, whether it’s D-rings, sawtooth hangers, wire or other fasteners on the back.

Measure from the top of the frame to the hanger. Measure the wall to achieve

the 57” on center location, and then calculate where this falls within the height of the artwork and frame top.

Adjust accordingly and mark. Then measure the distance from the frame top to the hanger location on the wall.

Be sure to take the weight of the picture into consideration when selecting hanging hardware. More than 140 leadership volunteers united on Thursday, March 8th, at the American Cancer Society’s annual Evening of Hope at The Fox Hollow in Woodbury to celebrate the organization’s local impact, recognize volunteers and present the distinguished Heart and Soul award.

Highlight of the evening was the presentation of The Heart and Soul Award, a prestigious honor recognizing an individual(s) who encompasses the mission of the American Cancer Society through volunteerism, participation in multiple events and initiatives and goes beyond expectations in a volunteer role to benefit cancer patients and families on Long Island.

Staying active is a nobrainer when it comes to improving how you look and feel, yet according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, only 56.1% percent of New York State adults are getting the recommended amount of aerobic physical activity. This month the American Heart Association, the world’s leading voluntary organization dedicated to building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke, is challenging everyone to get moving.

Move More Month is part of the association’s Healthy For Good™ movement,

which inspires people everywhere to make lasting changes in their health and their lives, one small step at a time.

“The human body was designed to move,” said Eduardo Sanchez, M.D., M.P.H., FAAFP, American Heart Association’s chief medical officer for prevention. “Your body thanks you for moving by relieving anxiety, depression and even anger, and rewards you by making your brain and heart stronger.”

Not only can moving more help improve selfconfidence, energy levels and sleep quality, those who are physically active

and at a healthy weight live about seven years longer than those who are not active and are obese.

People are encouraged to share how they’re moving more in April by using the hashtags #HealthyForGood and #MoveWithHeart on social media.

According to the American Heart Association, just 150 minutes a week of activity that gets your heart pumping and leaves you a little breathless can provide major health benefits. The American Heart Association’s Healthy For Good movement encourages everyone to get moving with the following

tips: Work it… at Work – Whether you work in an office, at home or behind the wheel, chances are you spend a lot of time sitting.

Not enough time to move?

Try moving more while you perform routine tasks.

Start by taking one weekly meeting to go by walking while you meet. Other options include taking the stairs more often, parking farther out or taking stretch breaks throughout the day.

Play with Fido – Most pet owners will tell you that having a pet can relieve stress and boost overall happiness. But did you know that people

who walk their dogs are more likely to get the recommended amount of physical activity than those who don’t. According to one study, dog-walkers got an average of 30 minutes more exercise a day than non-walkers.

Make it a Family Affair – You don’t need to break the bank to move more with your kids. There are numerous tips to keep your family active on the cheap. And if the weather is bad or outdoor activities are out of the question, try dancing, playing or cleaning indoors. Want to get out? Go for a walk around the mall or check out recreation centers in

your neighborhood.

Bust a Move Anywhere – The American Heart Association recommends adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate activity every week. That can be accomplished by taking small activity breaks, setting reasonable expectations and finding a move more buddy.

No matter what you do, it’s important to stay motivated by making every move count and celebrate your accomplishments.

Education Partner Honorees On Wednesday, April 11th, Nassau BOCES will honor 15 people and organizations that have had a profound effect on public education in Nassau County. The Nassau BOCES Education Partner Awards program pays tribute to outstanding community and business leaders, civil servants, government officials, nonprofit executives and volunteers, organizations, school administrators and staff, students, teachers and Nassau BOCES employees.

During the past 12 years, more than 100 individuals have been honored with the Nassau BOCES Education Partner Award, which recognizes those who have made a substantial impact on public education in

Nassau County. A strategic education partner with local school districts since 1967, Nassau BOCES created the award to pay tribute to those who share its commitment to enabling students of all ages and abilities to achieve their maximum potential.

This year’s honorees will receive their awards at the 12th Annual Education Partner Awards Gala on Wednesday, April 11th.

The gala is sponsored by the Nassau BOCES Educational Foundation, an independent, community-based organization devoted to enhancing educational opportunities for students who take part in Nassau BOCES schools, services or programs. The Foundation supports initiatives that

are beyond the scope of the agency’s budget.

“It gives us great pleasure to congratulate our 2018 Education Partner honorees,” Nassau BOCES Board President Eric Schultz said on behalf of the agency. “They are all extraordinary, sharing our commitment to creating safe and caring educational environments where all students can achieve their greatest potential. We are grateful for your support of our students and programs.”

The Eldercare Locator, a public service of the Administration on Aging, an agency of the U.S. Administration for Community Living is a nationwide service that connects older adults and their caregivers with

information on aging services.

Callers to the Eldercare Locator receive information about federal, state and local services such as transportation, inhome supportive services, and health and wellness programs.
