The War On Ukraine And The Legacy Of World War II The Museum Of American Armor Will Field An Education Day For Long Island’s High School Students That Connects History To Headlines field tactics, and mock small arms in open woods reminiscent of World War II France.

Lawrence Kadish, president and founder of the museum, said, “There has been a deliberate reduction in class time assigned to teaching history, and World War II in particular. As a result, many students have no context for what the world is seeing in Ukraine and how Putin is repeating Hitler’s playbook almost to the letter. We need to appreciate that today’s headlines were written by history and this program seeks to address that.”

Gloria Sesso, the Armor Museum’s education coordinator and copresident of the Long Island Council for the Social Studies, explained, “This program creates an immersion program for

students that integrates classroom study guides with an extraordinary field experience. As the classroom returns to normal following COVID this program regains the ability to tell the story of World War II, its legacy,

and why the chilling scenes we are seeing in Ukraine are yet another chapter written by that conflict.”

Dr. Libby O’Connell, History Channel Chief Historian Emeritus and Chairperson of the NYC World War I Centennial

Commission, said, “This day-long program has the means to become a statewide model for field trips that place students in a period of time that remains a pivotal moment in world history. Those school districts that participate

Stating that today’s headlines about Russia’s war on Ukraine were written some 80 years ago as a grim legacy of World War II, the Museum of American Armor, the Long Island Living History Association (LILHA) and Nassau County Department of Parks, Recreation & Museums will conduct a joint educational field program that will allow thousands of Long Island high school students to strengthen their understanding of World War II and the shadow it continues to cast nearly a century later.

The event will be held on Friday, May 13th, and preregistration is now open to social studies classes across Long Island.

services to teens and their families at the beginning stages of their alcohol or drug experimentation or abuse. Psychoeducation and skill building is offered through individual, family and group services which aim to prevent the devastating, lifelong effects of addiction.

The opioid epidemic has highlighted that all ages, socio-economic backgrounds, and all communities can be profoundly vulnerable to addiction. YES Community Counseling Center has been providing both addiction treatment and prevention services for the past three decades with the understanding that the needs of each individual is uniquely different and therefore, treatment must also be individualized and utilize a variety of approaches.

YES Community Counseling Center’s addiction treatment services are comprehensive and approaches are based upon the developmental stage and readiness of each individual. Under the supervision of the agency’s Medical Director, specializes in evidence based services which are available for adolescents, young adults, adults and family members, including: •Adolescent Family Program (AFP) •Young Adult groups •Impaired driver evaluations and treatment •Moral Reconation Therapy for those who are legally involved (MRT) •Recovery groups •Trauma focused therapies •Parent and significant other support groups •Educational groups

It is also understood that most often, family members are deeply affected by addiction and require support and well as an understanding the complexities of the disease and how to support a loved one through their recovery.

Early education about addiction is critical along with early interventions that build individual, family and community protective factors to reduce the likelihood of young people resorting to substances to cope with life’s challenges.

In light of marijuana legalization, it is so important that parents learn the detrimental effects of all substances on the developing brain. In addition to prevention services within the local schools and community, YES CCC offers early intervention

To improve operations and maximize the delivery of services, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board approved a departmental consolidation and reorganization plan that aims to achieve cost savings for taxpayers through efficiencies. Under the plan, four town departments are consolidated into two departments, and a new town Department of Sanitation is created along with other operational efficiencies.

“We examined town

operations and best practices with the goal of improving the delivery of services in a cost-conscious manner,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Furthering our commitment to protecting taxpayers, we are moving forward with a departmental consolidation and reorganization plan to bring about greater efficiencies with an eye towards saving money and bettering services for residents.”

In an effort to repave a greater number of streets and

better maintain roadways, the Town Board’s action results in the consolidation of the Highway Department into the Department of Public Works (DPW). The goal of this initiative is to build synergy between the Engineering Division of DPW and the men and women of Highway who perform maintenance. By rolling the Department of Highway into DPW, the Town will not have to hire a new Commissioner for a department that no longer exists, thus providing

for a savings down the line.

Councilman Steve Labriola stated, “The Town Board has been focused on finding savings in every corner of our government.

This departmental consolidation will allow us to achieve efficiencies, save taxpayers money and improve the delivery of services.”

For more than a year, the Town has examined new ways to deal with sanitation, with the goal of creating a more efficient and

streamlined process for both trash and recyclable waste.

Accordingly, a standalone Department of Sanitation was also approved by the Town Board to streamline inter-related sanitation collection operations and recycling collection programs. It replaces the division of sanitation and recycling collection that was currently part of DPW. With an eye toward cost savings and best protecting Mother Earth, this department will have jurisdiction over the

To help residents looking to obtain new passports, Oyster Bay Town Clerk Richard LaMarca announced that his office will offer a special one-stop Passport Weekend on Saturday, April 2nd and Sunday, April 3rd from 9am to 3pm at both Town Hall North in Oyster Bay and Town Hall South in Massapequa.

“Residents looking to apply for a new passport are invited to visit Town Hall during Passport Weekend to receive assistance in preparing their application,” said Town Clerk LaMarca.

“We can help you with organizing your documents, obtaining a photo and submitting the documents for approval.”

Syosset High School Human Ecology Department Holds Registration For Childhood Education Program The Syosset High School Human Ecology Department will once again be accepting registration for their part-time program for preschool aged children.

Any child who is a Syosset resident and four years old is eligible for the program.

The Childhood Education

class uses a multisensory approach to learning.

High school students with prerequisites in developmental psychology, teach age-appropriate curriculum using a thematic approach in eight learning areas.

The program starts in mid-October and runs for

the full year with a break in between following the school calendar. Classes are held on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9:15am-11:15am.
