Students handcrafted bracelets and sold the creations for a $1.

Mind, Body and Health relay races for students in fourth- and fifthgraders. The instructors volunteered to be a part of the series thanks to some students that attend the academy.

“We came to talk to the kids about the importance of health and fitness and taking care of their bodies and minds,” said Batista.

“We also wanted to make sure they’re not bullying and are treating each other

kindly, to have a successful and safe school year.”

The goal of the Brown Bag Seminar Series is to introduce students to ideas and information that may inspire them.

“Thank you to the instructors of the Karate Academy of Bethpage for being part of our series and visiting our students,” said Principal Kerri McCarthy.

In preparation for Easter, the Walt Whitman Shops is offering an opportunity for local children to have fun and give back to charity during their annual Easter Egg Hunt. This event will take place on Sunday April 14th at 9am. Tickets are $5 per child and all proceeds will be donated to Birthday Wishes of Long Island. Over 10,000 eggs and toys will be spread out in a section of the mall for kids to find. Also, you can meet the Easter Bunny there as well!

Birthday Wishes relies heavily on donations of toys from generous donors like you to throw a birthday party, they are always looking for more of these donations.

As teens are their fastest growing demographic that they serve, they are always in need of teen gifts. They are currently looking for gifts for children of the ages 14-19. They love to throw birthday parties for the children they serve, which reflects a birthday party that would be thrown for any child anywhere. They serve hot meals from 12-1PM Monday-Friday and they also prepare a take home bag for each of their guests, consisting of two sandwhiches, a drink and a snack. No one ever leaves their soup kitchen hungry.

They serve an average of 110 people daily and they operate solely on donations. Their volunteers are extremely dedicated and hardworking people. If you would like to volunteer with or donate to The Mercy Inn, please feel free to call them at (631) 643-5117 for more information.

English as a new language learners at Hicksville Middle School recently enjoyed an in-school field trip in partnership with the Heckscher Museum of Art in Huntington.

ENL students enjoyed the museum’s presentation

on Latino artists from around the world, then celebrated their individuality and diversity by creating their own stylized self-portraits. This included incorporating unique patterns into their portraits.

Students worked under the direction of museum staff and had a wonderful time channeling their own creativity while following the technique of some of the greatest artists in the world.

New MTA RAIL Act

Long Island Senate Majority delegation announced the ‘MTA RAIL Act’ at the Hicksville LIRR station. The MTA RAIL Act will overhaul the MTA, its operations, and introduce much needed reforms to the way the MTA operates. They announced a five-point platform that includes an independent, forensic audit of the MTA, giving riders a voting voice on the MTA Board.

The five-point platform includes: an independent, comprehensive forensic audit of the MTA’s procurements, improvement to long-term capital planning, providing riders a voting voice on the MTA board, overhauling the way the MTA analyzes itself, and ensuring MTA revenues are more likely to go to New York businesses.

How Do I Top That?

After my last column expressing how much my late friend Brenna meant to me, I received an outpouring, not just from regular readers, but from Brenna’s family and friends, letting me know that the column I wrote about her touched them tremendously. Now, how do I top that?

Have you ever felt that way?

You deliver a tour de force, whatever that may be in your life or career, and now you are left with tackling your next act, only to think, “How do I top that?”

Perhaps we are not meant to compete with our last great feat, but rather to integrate it into the intricate tapestry of who we are, and trust in what comes forth from there.

Generally speaking, with an accomplishment of any kind, comes an unspoken promise of more and better accomplishments to come. Expectations rise and, with it, so does anxiety and selfconsciousness in its most literal term; an acute consciousness of the self. I cannot tell you how many times I have heard people

confess in their most candid moments that they are afraid of being exposed as a fraud, a sham, an imposter in their own life. I hear it from friends all the time.

It all comes down to, “What do I do for my next trick?” I remember a magazine interview that actress Michelle Pfeiffer gave many years back, in which she confessed that every time she stepped onto a new movie set, she was convinced that would be the time she would finally be exposed as a bad actress and she would be fired on the spot.

It’s funny, but these very human feelings can even extend to something as simple as planning your child’s birthday party. How do you top last year’s birthday party? Or will it even be on par with last year’s party? Will the apple pie you made at last year’s family gathering meet everyone’s expectations this year? Maybe you just signed a new client, and you’re wondering if your work will live up to their expectations?

So, how do we defuse this common human ailment of the fear of living up to our own

expectations, and the expectations of others? Self-judgement is born in the mind. Turn down the volume of the mind and turn up the volume of the heart. The gut should always run interference.

Some of what I write may be pure platinum, while other entries are gold, silver or even rust, depending on who you ask.

I’ve certainly gotten a few rusty emails over these months. I’ve also gotten emails of appreciation and gratitude that have touched me deeply. One thing I will always serve up is my truth. That I know I can deliver every time, without exception. Having the courage to say, “This is who I am, and this is how I feel,” is the antidote to, “How do I top that?” syndrome.

The next time you’re about to give your next presentation, create your next piece of art, cook your next meal, plan your next party or draw up your next big plans, if it feels right and it feels real, and it resonates with your heart and your gut, it’s a meaningful and worthy pursuit.

How it will be received by others is anyone’s guess.

Medical Marvels Competition

The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research in Manhasset and Northwell Health’s Center for Workforce Readiness has named Hicksville High School the winner of its seventh annual Medical Marvels Competition. The program was developed to encourage Long Island high school students in ninth and 10th grades to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math.

This year’s Medical Marvels competition posed a hypothetical challenge to all contestants: “You are the principal of a high school in New York State and your school district’s superintendent is extremely worried about vaping at the high school.

The superintendent tasks you with developing and implementing a solution to end this crisis.” This was the problem Dr. Stephanie Piscitelli’s Introduction to

Social Science Research students at Hicksville High School were asked to solve.

This included examining the risks of exposure to nicotine and toxic substances, dependence and abuse, and secondhand exposure associated with e-cigarettes. The team then had to develop an innovative solution, a plan for enhancing awareness and a measure for their work.

Students Sarah Chavez, Roxy Dias, Maeryam Nasari, Bisma Omer and Kaitlyn Verdugo examined this real-world scenario and developed the winning solution to end the problem and improve the health and safety of the student population.

“We are extremely proud of the hard work and creativity of our young researchers in delivering an award-winning solution to this very real problem.

They represent the next

generation of visionaries in science and health research,” said Social Studies and Home and Careers Supervisor Dr. Rose Borda.

Thirty-eight teams submitted proposals in the competition. Each underwent an evaluation and judging process conducted by a panel of scientists, clinicians and health care administrators using the National Institutes of Health grant scoring criteria. Teams presented their completed proposals at the Medical Marvels competition on March 8 at the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research. Along with first-place honors, the Hicksville students won an award of $1,800.

The district congratulates Dr. Piscitelli and her Medical Marvels team for their thoughtful and valuable research!

POB Celebrates Scholars The Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District is proud to announce Audrey Shine as the valedictorian and Avery Girsky as salutatorian for the Class of 2019 at John F. Kennedy High School.

Both outstanding students will address their fellow graduates at the 2019 graduation ceremony.

In addition to their top grade point averages over their high school careers, Audrey and Avery were recently named as Finalists in the 64th Annual National Merit Scholarship Competition.

“Throughout their entire high school career, Audrey and Avery have been exemplary students and citizens,” said Dr. Lorna R. Lewis, District Superintendent of Schools.

“They have exemplified all the educational and character skills we teach, and then some. They have achieved both in and out of the classroom. We are

incredibly proud of their accomplishments and have no doubt that they will continue to thrive in all their future endeavors.”

Valedictorian Audrey Shine recently won the top prize at the 2018 Clean Tech Science Competition at Stony Brook University for her project focused on optimizing the performance of hydrogen fuel cells, which produce electricity with water as its only byproduct. As part of this accomplishment, she traveled to Rome, Italy, to present her project at the Annual World Congress on Climate Change with some of the top scientists in the world. Outside of school, Audrey spends most of her free time studying, learning and preparing for her competitions.

Audrey will graduate with a cumulative grade-point average of 102.46 before moving on to study at Harvard University.

One of salutatorian Avery Girsky’s proudest activities is his participation in our school’s Model United Nations Club (MetMUNC) as chief chair. He enjoys debating current issues in the political climate of the world. Avery also serves as vice president of tutoring for the Science Honor Society and vice president of Mathletes. Outside of school, Avery organized and directed a charity youth basketball tournament and helps raise money for various charities.

Avery will graduate with a grade-point average of 102.30. While undecided as to where he will study following graduation, Avery will be attending a four-year university.

The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent.

Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease.

Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to

be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease.

That news may be especially important

for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

Otherwise, you may waste your time and money planting flowers or vegetables only to have them zapped away by another frosty day.

Amend the soil so that it is the right consistency — just crumbling when lifting it. Soil that is too muddy after spring thaw can harden, making it difficult for plants to flourish later on in the season. Speak with representatives at a local lawn and garden center about which types of amendments you can add to your soil in your particular area, in order to enrich your soil.

Lawn and garden experts at The Home Depot suggest filling in bare patches of lawn now by mixing a few shovelfuls of soil with grass seed. Then apply this patch to the bare areas, water it, and continue to care for the entire area until the spot fills in.

Spend a day in the garage or shed tending to the lawn mower and other gardening equipment. Clean all of your tools and ensure that everything works, repairing parts as needed.

Give outdoor entertaining spaces a good scrubbing, clearing away dirt and grime that may have accumulated over winter months. Use a leaf blower to blow away any leftover leaves.

Check if your front porch, railings or decking need painting and/or staining. Tackle these projects when the weather is cooler

so everything will be ready for those peak spring days.

The American Home Furnishings Alliance says more than 70 percent of American households have outdoor living spaces, and nearly 70 percent of people use these spaces at least once per week in-season. Furthermore, homeowners are increasingly interested in enhancing these spaces to make them more usable and comfortable.

A recent survey from the online home design and remodeling resource Houzz found that more than 4,500 users were planning a landscape update. In addition, 56 percent of homeowners surveyed were making updates to improve their yards for entertaining.
