Hofstra University has been home to SchoolBusiness Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI)’s Long Island Regional FIRST® Robotics Competition since it first opened the doors to the organization in 2005. The event, which this year takes place March 31st and April 1st at the University’s David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex, is made possible through the funding and support of donors such as Hofstra.

“Hosting the FIRST Robotics Competition has been a very rewarding experience for us,” says Dr. Sina Y. Rabbany, Dean of the DeMatteis School of Engineering and Applied Science. “The skill, energy and ingenuity these young contestants bring to the field of robotics mesh perfectly with what we as educators recognize as the traits necessary to succeed as professionals in our fields.”

Now in its 18th season,

the SBPLI Long Island Regional features teams of high school-aged students from across Long Island, the New York metropolitan area and even around the world competing in a cooperative tournamentstyle robotics competition.

This year, 55 teams of students, including one from Brazil, will demonstrate their skills in science, technology, engineering and mathematics to compete for honors and recognition that reward design excellence, competitive play and sportsmanship.

This high-energy event further emphasizes the importance of highimpact partnerships between students, universities, businesses and communities.

This enables students, regardless of graduation date, to get a first-hand look at the setup of a college campus and the workings of an engineering program.

I’m always looking for signs. Except when I’m not, which makes them all the more poignant and undeniable.

Case in point, the one year anniversary of my grandfather’s passing recently came and went on March 13th, bringing with it the anticipated mix of sadness and reflection that these milestones tend to create.

Back on that day, one year ago, shortly after learning the devastating news, I stared blankly out my sliding glass door at the tree directly in front of my apartment, only to be met

with the gaze of one solitary robin. Sitting. Staring.

I must have stood at that door for a solid half hour, mesmerized by this tiny bird, alone in a barren tree, his eyes fixated on me.

Was it a sign? Was it just a matter of ironic timing?

Who knows… I chose to find solace in the serenity of the moment, comfort in the quiet.

A month later, we discovered a nest of four perfect robin’s eggs at my grandparents’ house, the first of its kind in that backyard, ever. We marveled at how it seemed to literally drop out of the sky at a most opportune moment, manifesting out of thin air,

a precious symbol that life does, in fact, go on.

Fast forward to last week.

I ran quickly to the store for a bunch of roses to bring to the cemetery, knowing that the impending “blizzard” and freezing temperatures would most likely destroy them in a matter of hours.

As I headed back to the car, a sign for birdseed caught my eye. And then, it hit me. Suddenly, I heard chirping. Loud, incessant chirping. I turned around, searching for the source… and there it was, a single, solitary robin, sitting on the top of the pile.

Some signs, you just don’t see coming.

The Coca-Cola Scholars Program Scholarship is an achievement-based award

that honors students for their commitment to making a significant impact on their schools and communities. In order to qualify for the award, Daniel had to undergo a rigorous application process. He was selected

from more than 180,000 students who applied and will be honored at a ceremony this April in Atlanta, where he will meet the other scholarship winners as well.

Research and discovery are at the heart of the Stony Brook ethos and the university’s Cancer Center is a shining example of its commitment to combating the malady. Stony Brook doctors are on the forefront of the next generation in

cancer care. The Cancer Center will relocate next year to the new 254,000 squarefoot Medical and Research Translation facility (MART) which was designed to enable scientists and physicians to work side by side to advance cancer research and imaging diagnostics. It will be home to the new Bahl Center for Metabolomics and Imaging, for instance, Stony Brook researchers are receiving worldwide attention for their pioneering research into the genesis and behavior of cancer cells at the molecular level, which will one day help

detect, treat, and eliminate the disease altogether.

Every spring the Stony Brook Foundation hosts the Stars of Stony Brook Gala to benefit student scholarships and a select academic program. Since its inception in 2000, the event has raised more than $42 million. A portion of the net proceeds from this year’s gala will support the Stony Brook Cancer Center.

This year’s honoree, former Vice President Biden, joins a distinguished roster of scholars, politicians, celebrities and luminaries

Seeking Volunteers North Shore Land Alliance, a local land trust, is seeking high school students, retirees, educators, nature enthusiasts, youth groups and community-minded businesses to help protect and steward the beautiful areas in our communities.

These areas safeguard our air and water supplies, provide wildlife habitat and create places for people of all ages to play, learn and connect with nature.

The Land Alliance is

very fortunate to work with more than 200 volunteers who contribute 1,000 hours of community service annually.

That time, valued at approximately $30,000, provides support for land conservation projects and educational programs.

Volunteers assist with a variety of efforts including trail restoration, invasive species management and plant and wildlife monitoring, just to name a few. They also assist with community outreach,

various Land Alliance publications and on their website. In essence, the Land Alliance cannot do their job without the important contributions of volunteers.

The Land Alliance is excited about their most recent purchase of the Humes Japanese Stroll Garden in Mill Neck, where volunteers will be integral to the re-opening of the garden. As a North Shore Land Alliance volunteer, you can learn new things and meet new

acquisitions and conservation easements, and provided stewardship services for valuable natural areas. As part of its mission, the Land Alliance has secured $265 million in public and private funding for local land and water protection.

The Land Alliance is recognized nationally as one of only 350 land trusts accredited by the Land Trust Alliance out of more than 1,700 land trusts nationwide.

Mrs. Denis-Paolucci took a few minutes to recognize the individual accomplishments of the students, which ranged from a variety of awards to prestigious performances. Rose recently won the opportunity to perform her original choreography at the Stage the Change Conference. “Something so little as dancing on a stage could spark a fire in someone and cause a chain reaction to begin,” Rose said. “And that is exactly what leadership is. Guidance, direction, motivation and influence are all actions that leaders take to invoke inspiration to others. These are all actions that each inductee has taken and will continue to take for as long as they live because of the opportunities that LIHSA has given us.”

Sydney spoke about the academic component of the LIHSA dance program.

All of the honorees excelled in both their Anatomy and Kinesiology courses and their Dance History courses for which they received college credit from LIU Post.

Another milestone was celebrated at Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) when its first cohort of students was inducted into the National Honor Society for Dance Arts (NHSDA) in February.

The seven students from throughout Long Island were recognized not only for their skill on the dance floor but also for their academic achievements and leadership.

The inductees were Tara Durkin (Massapequa UFSD), Jason Fauser (Northport-East Northport UFSD), Alexandra Ferrugia (Massapequa UFSD), Madison McGrath (Massapequa UFSD), Rose Ozimkowski (NorthportEast Northport UFSD), Aliyah Petrone (Massapequa UFSD), Jared Stern (Levittown UFSD) and Sydney Weltman (Bellmore-Merrick CHSD).

“These are high-achieving students with evolving artistry and a genuine interest in so many areas of the arts,” said LIHSA’s lead dance teacher Dina DenisPaolucci, who spearheaded the efforts to achieve this national recognition for her students. “I’m really proud of all of you,” she told the students. “This is a huge accomplishment for our program.”

The students were directly involved in the development of the LIHSA chapter of the NHSDA and helped plan their own induction ceremony. They also elected chapter officers – President Jared Stern, Vice

fundraising events, office work and membership mailings. Local educators and naturalists share their expertise with the Land Alliance community by leading their guided the Walks in Woods and helping to educate more than 3,400 school children through their Long Island Water Education Program.
